Boat Description/Cost: The 29er is a high performance
skiff, whose design borrows strongly from its sister, the
49er. The 29er hull is constructed from hi-tech composite

balanced Mylar sails, self-tacking jib supported by a
composite-tipped mast for the ultimate in gust response
and acceleration.
Add the asymmetric spinnaker, crew trapeze and you
have dynamic downwind performance. Other design features include a mainsail cuff to increase sail efficiency,
ram vang, safety foot/grab and an enclosed transom.
The 29er provides exciting competitive racing for either youth or mixed adult and youth crew combinations between

Boat Description/Cost:
The 49er and 49erFX
is a 4.9m long double handed Skiff suitable for people
17-50 years old. Australian designed and a strictly
controlled one-design class, the 49er has been the
Olympic class skiff since 2000 and attracts sailors
wanting a real challenge, as well as close and
affordable skiff racing. The FX is a reduced rig 49er
and will debut at the Rio Olympics as the female skiff
class. The speeds of the 49er and the FX are very
comparable and the two fleets often race as one. The
FX can also be sailed by a mixed crew. Both fleets are growing quickly in WA. Cost: from $2,000 for a complete
second-hand boat up to $28,000 for a brand new complete boat.
Clubs where Sailed:
The Cruising Yacht Club of WA, Mounts Bay Sailing Club, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht
Club
General Information:
Perfect for combined crew weight of 150kg – 170kg for the 49er and around 125kg –
145kg for the FX. True one-design meaning that the oldest, cheapest boat is identical to the newest. Olympic
status means that the second-hand market is active and good quality, cheap boats are for sale regularly. Great
fun to sail, cheap, relatively easy maintenance.
The Cruising Yacht Club races at 2pm on Saturdays. Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club Sunday mornings. Mounts
Bay Sailing Club race at 2pm on Sundays. All Clubs hold numerous training events and welcome new people.

late teens and early twenties but the class is attractive
to all ages and skill levels. Many of the sailors are over 30, some sailing with their ch ildren to give them a taste of
the on-water action and great social scene. The boat cost ranges from $500 to $14,000. Most Cherubs have a
carbon “Mathews” hull and many boats over 5 years old have been successful at the championships.

Boat Description/Cost: The Diamond, a 9 metre keelboat originating in
England in 1960 became popular for national and international racing. The
main requirements were low cost and high performance. To meet these
demands, an easily driven, light displacement design was promoted.
Diamonds are a one design, open keel boat class and have a mainsail,
genoa and spinnaker. Genoas are generally on a furling forestay and the
spinnaker is launched via a shute. The total crew compliment consists of 4
— 2 crew on trapeze and with the helmsman and trimmer swinging from
hiking straps. Diamonds constantly prove to be almost unbeatable in 25 plus
knots of breeze and are not for the faint hearted.
Events: Currently sailed socially however there is provision for participation
within mixed fleets at certain clubs.
Clubs where sailed: Geographe Bay Yacht Club
General Information: The Association is looking for younger members to revive and continue the prom otion of
this once highly popular boat in WA.

modern boat where the hull is as open as possible,
thereby leaving the helmsman completely free to
move around and trim the boat to any wind and water
conditions. When hiking, the large sides allow the
sailor to set-up comfortably with his/ her feet in the
straps with out placing any unnecessary stress on
the body. The totally open and sloping cockpit
means that there is absolutely no water in the boat either during sailing or just after a capsize. A relatively hard
chine design was chosen for the bottom shape of the hull. Used by numerous modern boat architects, this design
offers an excellent compromise between performance and stability. When reaching or broad -reaching, the boat
accelerates quickly to planning speed. When close-reaching, the boat sets on it chine and has excellent
performance up wine.
Cost: $3,999 (inc beach dolly).

Mr Pete Coop

Secretary:

Boat Description/Cost: The Sabre was designed as a need for a
single-handed dinghy that was easy, light and simple to build.
Performance suits the average sailor rather than the super athletic
skipper and at an affordable price. It has the attraction of excellent
handling performance in 20 knots and lumpy seas, a comfortable
cockpit and close class racing, suitable for both male and female
sailors.
The Sabre fits neatly into the position between junior and family
sailing dinghies and the high performance international classes.
For the keen do-it-yourself type, the Sabre is easily amateur built by
the simple stitch plywood and fibreglass tape method. It is estimated
that most amateurs can complete a Sabre in 40 man-hours. Low
maintenance all fibreglass/foam sandwich or plywood/fibreglass
composite boats are available to varying degrees of completion from
licensed builders. Moulds are constructed under National Association
control and there are number professional builders in Victoria and South Australia.
Sabres are maintained as a strict one-design class supported by strong, active State Associations with sufficient
flexibility to move with the times and technological development without detriment to earlier boats.
Events: Summer club racing, state championships – various dates and locations.
Clubs where sailed: Perth Dinghy Sailing Club, East Fremantle Yacht Club, Walpole Yacht Club, Maylands
Yacht Club and The Cruising Yacht Club
General Information: The Western Australian Association was formed in 2009. Over 1,800 boats have been
built since its inception, making the Sabre one of the largest single -handed classes in Australia with 36 clubs in
Victoria and strong fleets in South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and New South Wales.
