Snow Vehicles
Snow vehicles – a motor vehicle designed and equipped to be
driven exclusively on snow or ice – as defined by the Public Land
Administration Regulation (PLAR). www.qp.alberta.ca
Trail access may be amended, modified or closed by an officer in response to fires, fire
hazard, flooding, wildlife or other environmental and safety concerns. Please ensure you
have the recent information on the area you are travelling to before you arrive and obey all
posted signs and notices.
Department of
Transportation Roads
No trail symbols will be used to identify
roads in the PLUZ.
Only vehicles that are registered as
on-highway vehicles and have
valid insurance may operate on these
roads.
Industrial/Commercial roads
held under a Licence of Occupation
(LOC) or Departmental Licence of
Occupation (DLO) under the Public
Lands Act
No trail symbols will be used to identify
roads in the PLUZ. LOC/DLO roads
fall under the jurisdiction of the Traffic
Safety Act and vehicles that operate
on the LOC/DLO must be licensed and
registered as “on-highway vehicles.”
All vehicles that are licensed, insured and
registered as an on-highway vehicle are
permitted on these roads. Certain LOCs
have conditions restricting public access
for safety or wildlife reasons.
Temporary resource roads
(usually in place less than two years)
No trails symbols will be used to identify
roads in the PLUZ. Even though these
roads are built to lower standard than
primary or secondary highways they still
require on-road licence and registration
for vehicles to operate.
Public access may be permitted.
Up-to-date information on these roads
will be provided on the PLUZ web page as
well as at kiosks throughout the area.
Closed Roads
No trails symbols will be used to identify
roads in the PLUZ. These are roads that
are not open to the public for use.
Roads are closed for public use because
of public safety or fish and wildlife
concerns.
Shared Roads
These roads will be designated by the
Shared Use Road sign.
Obey the posted speed limits and
respect all users.
Some of the industrial/commercial/
temporary roads in the McLean
PLUZ were built on existing motorized
recreational access trails. The Elbow
Valley trail currently is the only Shared
Use road in the McLean PLUZ. As a
condition of the approval to use the
recreationalaccess trail for industrial use,
OHV and snow vehicle traffic is allowed.
The trail has been upgraded to allow for
the industrial traffic and a disposition
under the Public Lands Act has been
issued, but the road is to be treated as a
recreation trail.

Sharing the Land
Kananaskis Country is a 4200 km2 mosaic of
places designated as parks or public land
managed for multi-use. Here recreation, industry
and conservation coexist. The aim of Public Land
Use Zones (PLUZs) is to help facilitate this
goal by managing recreation within specific
landscapes. A PLUZ determines where
recreational activities can occur and under what
conditions.
There are four Public Land Use Zones in
Kananaskis Country: McLean Creek Off-Highway
Vehicle PLUZ, Sibbald Snow Vehicle and Cataract
Snow Vehicle PLUZs, and the Kananaskis Country
PLUZ. A motorized access chart is provided to
help you choose the appropriate activity for your
destination. Non-motorized activities are
permitted within all Public Land Use Zones.

Visitors to Kananaskis Country are strongly encouraged to use the amenities and facilities provided by Alberta
Environment and Parks (AEP) in Provincial Recreation Areas (PRA).
These areas have been engineered to reduce the risk of environmental impact to fish and wildlife habitat,
vegetation, soil and water integrity that is caused by intensive use.

Motorized use is limited to the designated trails shown on the map on the other side of the brochure. See
Designated Trails and Roads for more information.

Wheeled or tracked vehicles are not allowed on beds or shores of watercourses, wetlands or waterbodies.
Visitors who do not follow the rules could be fined or charged under provincial
legislation.
•
Do not wash your vehicle in a watercourse, wetland or waterbody.

Slow down. Adjust your speed of travel according to trail conditions to ensure the safety of all users.
•
Be courteous to other users and respect the limitations of their activities.
•
When meeting equestrian users, pull off to the side of the trail, shut off your engine, and remove your
helmet. Wait until the horse(s) and rider(s) have passed before restarting your engine.
•
When meeting hikers and mountain bikers, slow down and be courteous while passing.
•
When meeting dog sleds, pull off to the side of the trail and let the dog team pass.
•
If you encounter a locked gate, do not proceed beyond it. Access may be prohibited for reasons relating to
wildlife and other natural resource management, topography, private property, or human health and safety.
Travel is permitted beyond cattle guards and wire gates on the designated trail system. In lieu of posted
instructions, please leave the gate (open or closed) as you found it.

dangerous to life or property or detrimental to the management of or use of any road, trail or route within that
zone.
Best Practices For Random Camping
• Harmful materials such as sediment or pollution ( e.g. fuels, oils, greases, industrial or household chemicals or
refuse) may not be deposited into any water or onto ice of any watercourse or water body.
To reduce the impact of camping outside of campgrounds, ensure your site remains in a clean and tidy
condition.
• You may only cross streams at bridges or lawful crossings. Crossing a stream anywhere other than a bridge or
established ford is not permitted.
• Pack out all garbage.
• When required, fire bans and travel restrictions will be implemented.
• Camp at least 30 metres (100 feet) from water.
• Do not cut or remove live trees or vegetation.

Alberta Environment and Parks is leading the
restoration and reconstruction of priority
backcountry trails on public lands impacted by the
2013 flood. The Backcountry Trail Flood
Rehabilitation (BTFR) Program aims to restore
trails for both motorized and non-motorized users.
For your safety and the safety of trail workers,
please be aware of construction projects on trails
and avoid temporary closure areas. Closures will
be posted at trailheads and on the BTFR Program
Web Map. Trails that have been rerouted will have
signage posted at the start and end of the reroute
indicating changes.

Avoiding Wildlife Encounters
• Set up camp sites in open areas away from game trails, berry bushes, clover
patches, streams and lakeshores.
• Make noise to warn wildlife of your approach when walking or horseback
riding near water bodies and dense shrubbery.
• If you see a bear or see or smell an animal carcass, leave the area
immediately.
