The good news is that this will allow us, your delegates, to bring back some of the technical programs presented at the Convention to you. I will be announcing the topic for our first meeting via email upon my return from the event. We hope to have a much better program for you this year. In January the Society will be bringing several technical programs to Charlotte. Included are a Plumbing Design Workshop (Intermediate level), a Plumbing and Piping REVIT Workshop and possibly a Medical Gas or a Green Plumbing Design Workshop. These will be held the second or third week in January and will give you a chance at obtaining several CEU or PDH contact hours. We are looking forward to these programs and will have more for information you in the next couple of months I am still looking at some form of sponsorship program for our meetings so that we may bring them to you for free. I have several interested parties, and I hope to be able to fill the meeting calendar with them. Some of those fittings really help in conserving space and getting the pipe risers in place; and I intend to use them on an upcoming 4 story project if at all possible. As I write this article, the 2014 ASPE Convention and 50th anniversary celebration is now history. The following two paragraphs are from Nick Cantu and his observations while at the convention. The first paragraph concerns the design aspect of our profession, and the second paragraph is from the key note speaker for the convention. There was a significant increase at this expo over previous ones, in focus on prevention or management of legionella. One rising technology by a subsidiary of Kohler called Rada that caught my eye was a family of water management systems at the faucet, shower valve, and mixing valve level. This is a digital technology that works together wirelessly with faucets and mixing valves to “allow the user to operate, communicate and exchange information with the mixing valve to deliver a range of inputs including duty flushing, thermal disinfections, temperature logging, routine water usage information and valve programming.” The target market for this is the CONTINUED on PAGE 5B CONTINUED from PAGE 1B President Charlotte Pipe & Foundry GF Piping McGuire Mfg. With the continuing emphasis on managing legionella, I predict an increasing demand for this type of technology, especially in high risk facilities such as healthcare and schools. The second memorable event was the key note address by former Chicago Bears defensive tackle Dan Hampton. He played for the Bears during their glory days from 1979 through about 1991 and was part of the 1985 super bowl winning team. He spoke for nearly an hour and delivered many humorous anecdotes about other players and coaches. His own story is amazing in itself as he fell out of a tree at age seven breaking both legs, some other bones, and was told by the doctors he would never be able to run again. He started his high school career playing in the marching band. He had a particularly humorous tale regarding “The Frigg” Perry who went to Clemson and still lives in the area. He also had a very emotional account of the great running back Walter Peyton who died at an early age some years ago. Humor and stories aside, his main point was that the Chicago Bears had a successful team because every member of the team was striving for the same goal and not for their own individual goals. This did not happen by accident. A great lesson that can be applied to any endeavor a person is involved in. Have you ever sized and specified a grease interceptor? Is it confusing trying to figure out what goes into the interceptor and what does not? Most of the sizing programs I have seen only calculate the pot washing sink, and then use a small on the floor grease interceptor about the size of a couple of suitcases stacked on each other. Well, come out to our next meeting on Tuesday October 7, where Hans Haas, or a rep from Rockford, will be presenting a session on how to size grease interceptors for whole kitchens; not just the pot sink.
