Welcome to the 14th annual Joe Cheves Junior Invitational. We are pleased
to invite a strong field to the 2016 event. Mimosa Hills Golf Club and Burke
County are honored to host the tournament, and we’re so glad you’re here.
Mimosa Hills is celebrating its 87th anniversary, and it is a guarantee that
competitors and spectators will enjoy this 1929 Donald Ross-designed course.
The course is challenging, yet tightly layed out and easily walkable. This year’s
field boasts 114 championship-caliber golfers (39 Girls / 75 Boys) who have
accepted their invitations, and are in town to compete for the Joe Cheves trophy.
If you have fans who could not be here this weekend to watch you compete,
please remind them to go to www.joecheves.com to follow LIVE Scoring as the
tournament unfolds.

uring his 70 years as a PGA professional, Life Member Joe
Cheves spent 30 years at Mimosa Hills as head professional, and
an additional 27 more years as its Pro Emeritus. No one loved
Mimosa Hills more. Wherever he went, he let everyone know what
a special course and what a great club Morganton had in Mimosa
Hills. Joe Cheves and Mimosa Hills were made for each other.
Cheves owns outstanding credentials of worldly, national,
state and hometown proportions. After turning pro in 1938, he
enjoyed a remarkable career as a PGA golf professional.
August 25, 1999 was a record-setting day for Cheves. In a
friendly foursome at Mimosa Hills in Morganton, N.C., Cheves set
a confirmed world record. He toured the 6,250-yard Mimosa layout in 64 strokes (8-under par), which calculated to 17 shots under
his age of 81. (One year earlier, Cheves had tied the world record.)
On April 6, 2006, Cheves again went 17 under his age with a twounder 70 at age 87. He first shot his age in 1982, when he was
64, and then bettered his age over a thousand times in his golf
career.
The world records aside, Cheves' list of accolades are many. A
club pro for over 60 years, he took his game national on several
occasions.
In 1978, at age 60, he finished tied for first in the oldest
major championship in professional senior golf, the Senior PGA
Championship. He shot 73-72-71-70 at the Magnolia Course at
Disney World, tying Joe Jimenez and Manuel de la Torre. Jimenez
won the ensuing playoff with a birdie on the first hole.
Cheves played in two U.S. Opens (1953, 56), two PGA Championships (1962, 64), 10 PGA Seniors
Championships (1969, 71, 74, 75, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81,84), and three U.S. Senior Opens (1980, 81, 84). He was
a marshal at the 1951 Ryder Cup Matches in Pinehurst.
Throughout his playing career in the Carolinas PGA Section, he was one of the area's most consistent
players. In 1959, he finished runnerup in the Carolinas Open, losing in a playoff to the late P.J. Boatwright.
Cheves was playing captain for the Carolinas PGA Team at the 1961 Carolinas Cup Matches, played at
Mimosa Hills.
Cheves, a World War II veteran, got even better with age. He was a four-time winner of the Carolinas
PGA Seniors (1972, 75, 76, 83) and a three-time runnerup (1971, 73, 74). In 1979, Cheves captured the Ben
Hogan Staff Tournament in Texas. He won the 1993 CPGA Senior Open at Mid Pines at age 75.
In May 2006, Cheves was paired in the final group with Arnold Palmer in the inaugural Shoot Your Age
Championship in Florida. Cheves and Palmer tied for second in the CBS televised event at three-under their
age.
There was more than playing ability that separated Cheves from the rest of the field. As a member of the
service organization, which is the PGA, he was a consultant, teacher, diplomat, businessman, friend, and
partner, reaching legendary status in all categories.
A former CPGA Board of Director member and Vice-President, Cheves was the 1964 Carolinas Section
Golf Professional of the Year. He has membership in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, the Carolinas
Golf Hall of Fame, the Carolinas PGA Hall of Fame, and the Burke County (NC) Sports Hall of Fame.
During his years as a club professional at Bennettsville CC in South Carolina, Twin Valley CC in
Wadesboro, NC and Mimosa Hills in Morganton, his trademarks were always his passion for the game of
golf, his love to teach and his friendly manner. He derived a deep satisfaction from seeing other people
improve their golf game, especially junior players. To everyone who knew him, even his grandchildren and
great grandchildren, he was simply PRO.
The majority of Cheves' career was spent at Mimosa Hills. He was pro there from 1951-81. Even after
retiring, Cheves spent most of the rest of his days at his beloved Mimosa Hills.
A native of Cheraw, SC, Cheves called North Carolina home for 61 years. He was married to the former
Martha Crawford of Wadesboro, and they had two children — Carolyn & Carter, three grandchildren and two
great grandchildren. He was born May 23, 1918.
Joe Cheves passed away, at age 89, on July 31st, 2007. At Mimosa Hills, he will forever be remembered
for his dedicated service, as well as his generosity, gentle spirit and friendship.
The Joe Cheves Junior Invitational @ Mimosa Hills and the Joe Cheves Memorial Scholarship will play
a small part in keeping his memory and legacy alive for future generations of junior golfers.
Golf is the game of a lifetime, and for Joe Cheves, it was the game of his life. He was a PRO at it.

Sarah Thomas will be singing the
National Anthem, Saturday morning,
August 27, during opening ceremonies of
the 2016 JCJI. Sarah graduated from
Northwestern University with undergraduate
degrees in classical music and creative
writing, and recently received a Masters
degree in Creative Writing from The New
School in New York. She resides in
Manhattan, where she continues to train
her voice for a career in opera.
Gene Spainhour, a pilot from Hickory, NC will be doing a flyover down the 1st Fairway at the end of the
opening ceremonies, to kick off the tournament. Weather-permitting, Gene has graciously done a flyover for
most of the Joe Cheves Junior events.
Mimosa Hills History — 87 Years
D
onald Ross, the famed Scottish-born golf
course architect, created Mimosa Hills in
1929, taking painstaking advantage of
Morganton’s natural beauty and phenomenal
panoramic mountain views. A restoration was
completed in 2003 of the entire course by Kris
Spence, preserving the integrity of Ross’ design,
while keeping an eye on the future of the game.
Called one of the best-kept secrets in the
Carolinas, Mimosa is an old-style layout that is
second to none in golf hole charisma. You’ll
love its playability and scenic views of the Blue
Ridge, Table Rock and the South Mountains.
Mimosa Hills was, and is, the home course to
numerous golf celebrities and outstanding players.
The late, great Joe Cheves was the golf pro
at Mimosa Hills for 30 years (1951-81). He was
inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of
Fame in 2004. In 1978 he tied for first at the
1978 Senior PGA Champioship. He shot a score
of 64 in 1999 at the age of 81 to give him the
world record for shooting the most strokes
under someone’s age. In May 2006, he paired
with Arnold Palmer in the final pairing of the
inaugural Shoot Your Age Championship,
where he finished second. His dedication to golf
and love for the game was an inspiration to
everyone.
Billy Joe Patton’s stirring appearance at the
1954 Masters brought him national recognition.
He finished one shot behind eventual champion
Ben Hogan and Sam Snead, who decided the ’54
Masters in a playoff. Patton played in 13 Masters
and was low amateur four times. He finished in
the Top 13 at four Masters. He was also low amateur at the US Open in 1954 & 1956. Patton was
a five-time Walker Cup player and the Walker
Cup Captain in 1969. He won three North &
South Amateur titles and was twice Southern
Amateur champion. He received the USGA’s
prestigious Bob Jones Trophy in 1982.
There’s also the late Dale Morey, an outstanding amateur player, who was a Mimosa
member and former club president. Morey was
a three time Walker Cup player, a three-time
Southern Amateur champion, and the 1953 U.S.
Amateur runner-up to Gene Littler. Morey won
the 1974 and 1977 United States Senior
Amateur Championships.
Norma Stamey-Shook was the runner-up
in the 1955 North Carolina Women’s Amateur
Championship. She was a very talented amateur
golfer and eventually played on the LPGA Tour
in the early 1960’s.
Morganton native Dana Rader got her start
at Mimosa. She is a renowned golf instructor at
Ballantyne Golf Resort in Charlotte. She is
annually considered one of the Top 100 instructors nationally. She’s currently the President of
the LPGA Teaching & Development division.

Faulkner won the 1951 British Open, while Weetman
won the British PGA title. Both players remained in
North Carolina following the 1951 Ryder Cup at
Pinehurst, where both competed for the GB&I squad.

A
fter finishing 36-holes of play, deadlocked at 146
(2-over), US Junior Qualifiers Kandy Carland (7274) of Etowah, NC and Blythe Worley (71-75) of
Greenville, NC settled the issue in a playoff for top honors at the First Annual Joe Cheves Junior Invitational @
Mimosa Hills. In the sudden-death playoff, Carland sank
a 10 foot birdie putt on the first extra hole (#18) to defeat
Worley, the reigning North Carolina Junior Champion.
Two-time CGA North Carolina Junior Champion
Barden Berry of Kinston, NC won the Inaugural Joe
Cheves Junior Invitational @ Mimosa Hills. Berry toured
the 1929 Donald Ross designed course in five-under for
the 36-hole event, shooting 71-68. Berry’s grandparents
were members of Mimosa Hills back in the 1960’s.
Finishing second was 2003 Carolinas Junior Player of the
Year Vince Hatfield (70-71) of Greenwood, SC.

blistering final round back-nine 31 (5-under) propelled Blair Lamb to victory in the second annual
Joe Cheves Junior Invitational. Down by five with nine
holes to play, Lamb, from Flat Rock, NC, birdied #11,
#12, #13, #14 and #18 to overtake runnerup Corrine Carr
of Pinehurst, NC. Carr held a two-shot lead playing #18,
but her double-bogey combined with Lamb's birdie gave
the future Furman Paladin the victory. Lamb, a 2004
U.S. Junior Qualifier, shot 73-68=141, while Carr the
2004 North & South Junior Champion fired 71-71=142.
Jayson Judy of Gibsonville, NC captured the 2004
Joe Cheves Junior Invitational. Judy bested a strong
field of 56 players, firing rounds of 73-71=144 over
the challenging par-72, 6,650 yard Donald Ross
designed Mimosa layout, which is celebrating its 75th
anniversary. Finishing a shot back were Robert Wilhelm
of Franklin, NC (72-73), Preston Yates of WinstonSalem, NC (72-73) and Joe Kastelic of Newton, NC (72-73).

aylor Barrett of York, SC began the final round of
the third annual Joe Cheves Junior Invitational
with a four-shot lead. With the help of a blistering
final round back-nine 33 (3-under), Barrett claimed
the championship trophy by a tournament record six
shots. Her two-day total (73-71) was even par 144 over
the demanding, old-style 5,575-yard Mimosa layout.
Faith Hardison, a freshman from Jamesville, NC took the
runnerup spot firing rounds of 77-73=150.
On the strength of a first round 5-under 67, Daniel
Meggs of Charlotte held on to capture the third Joe Cheves
Junior. Meggs' first round included birdieing his first four
holes and five of the first seven. In the final round Meggs had
to hold off a hard-charging Niklas Peterson, also from
Charlotte. With nine holes to play, Meggs had a four-shot
cushion and he pushed the lead to six after birdies at 10 and
11. A Meggs double-bogey at the par-4 15th combined with
a Peterson birdie shrunk the lead to three shots with three
holes to play. Meggs finished 4-4-4 for 74, while Peterson
went 4-3-3 for 72, giving Meggs a one-shot victory.

fter opening the 2006 Joe Cheves Junior Invitational
with a two-under par 70, Alex Rankin cruised to a
four-shot victory in the fourth annual event at Mimosa
Hills. The 2006 U.S Junior qualifier, posted 76 in the
final round to finish at two-over par for the tournament.
A trio of players finished second at 150. Each shot the
identical 18 hole score each day. Jordan Ridge of
Pinehurst, Courtney Gunter of Matthews and Chapel
Hill’s Michelle Ahn each posted 76-74.
Jacob Burger of Orangeburg, SC came across the
border to capture the fourth annual Joe Cheves Junior.
Burger, who earlier in the summer captured the South
Carolina Junior Championship and was the CGA Carolinas
Junior runnerup, set a new tournament scoring record in the
process, firing 70-68 for a six-under 138 total. Charlotte’s
Stefan Brewer (68-71) and McCuen Elmore (69-70) of
Cheraw, SC shared runner-up honors. Brewer displayed the
kind of integrity and honesty that makes golf a great test of
character. After opening with 68, he shot 71 in the final round,
which momentarily tied Burger for the championship. Brewer
called a penalty on himself in the scorer’s tent, which resulted
in a one-shot penalty added to his score.

A
ustin Ernst wrapped up a torrid summer of golf when
she cruised to an easy eight-shot victory at the fifth Joe
Cheves Junior. The South Carolina Junior Match Play
champion and her state’s top ranked player shot 70-71 for a
three-under par total of 141. Ernst, a sophomore at Seneca
High School was a 2007 U.S. Junior qualifier this summer.
Bahama’s Meghan Moore, the No. 1 ranked player in North
Carolina, finished second with 78-71=149. Behind eight
shots to begin the day, Moore started her final round birdiebirdie-eagle and was five-under on the round after eight
holes. She got within three shots of Ernst, but a doublebogey on the par three 9th hole derailed any chance to catch
the unflappable Ernst.
Tuscola High School senior Drew Page was as hot as
the temperature at Mimosa Hills in winning the Joe
Cheves Junior. Page, an Oklahoma State University com-
mitment, fired 68-67, setting a new tournament scoring
record at nine-under par. Steady all weekend, Page was
never seriously challenged. Page produced 11 birdies and
one eagle, to just four bogies on the Mimosa Hills layout.
Corbin Mills of Easley, SC and high school frosh Billy
Herring of Lillington finished second. Mills shot 74-65,
while Herring fired 71-68. Mills, a Clemson commitment
for the fall of 2009, set a new 18-hole scoring record at the
event with his 65.

achery Munroe, a U.S. Junior qualifier and Providence
High School sophomore, played a bogey-free final round in
winning the 2008 Joe Cheves Junior. He overtook 1st-round
leader Crawford Reeves, a Clemson commitment and U.S.
Amateur qualifier. Reeves opened with 67, holding the lead by
one over Lundy, and two over Munroe. In the final round, he
pushed the lead to two over Munroe and three over Lundy after
birdies on two of the first three holes. However, Reeves had a
disasterous triple bogey on the par 4, 410-yard fourth hole to open
up the tournament. Munroe and Lundy seized the opportunity and
began a birdie fest. At the turn, Munroe held a one-shot lead. He
proceeded to birdie 10, 11 and 12. Lundy kept pace with birdies on
11 and 12. Both players birdied the par 5 14th and they parred in
from there, with Munroe ahead by two. In the final round, the two
players combined for 13 birdies and no bogies. Munroe went 3232, while Lundy went 34-33.
Texas commitment Haley Stephens shot a tournamentrecord 66 in the final round of the sixth Joe Cheves Junior to win
by two shots over Austin Ernst, the defending champion. Ernst,
the first round leader with 71, began her final round doublebogey, bogey, allowing Stephens (75) back into the tournament.
Stephens took the momentum and shot lights out, carving out
34-32 over the Mimosa layout. She secured the win with birdies
on 17 and 18. Ernst recovered and played three-under over the
final 16 holes to finish second (71-72).

fter finishing fourth in 2007, and third in 2008, Kaitlyn
Rohrback of Crofton, Md. finally made it to the top of
the leaderboard at the Joe Cheves Junior Invitational.
Rohrback, a University of Tennessee commitment, shot 7174=145 to take a one-shot victory over high school freshman
McKenzie Talbert of North Augusta, S.C. (71-75=146).
Albemarle’s Sarah Almond took third with 75-72=147.
North Carolina Junior Champion Andrew Knox, of
Cary, NC, fired a career-low, jaw-dropping 63 in the final
round of the seventh annual Joe Cheves Junior to capture a
six-shot victory. After opening with an even-par 72, and
finding himself three shots back of the lead, Knox went 3132 over his final 18 holes. His round included seven birdies,
seven pars, two eagles, and two bogies. Knox is committed to
play collegiately at UNC-Greensboro next season. High
school freshman Adam Ball of Richmond, Va. took runnerup
honors with 69-72=141. Ball is the Virginia Junior Champion.

hen Sunday’s final round started, seven girls were
within four shots of one another. Everyone was
chasing first round leader Kendall Martindale, who opened
with a first round 68. Spectators were anticipating a thrilling
down-to-wire finish. Martindale, however, would have none
of it, as she produced a record-setting performance enroute
to a six-shot victory. Martindale extinguished any suspense
early in the final round. The No. 1 ranked junior player in
Tennessee reeled off four birdies (1, 5, 6, 7) to distance
herself from the rest of the field, firing a final round 67 to
end up winning by six over U.S. Junior runnerup Katelyn
Dambaugh and ECU commitment Katie Kirk.
Explosive opening rounds of 65 by Will Long and 66 by
Cody Proveaux forewarned of a two-man shootout on the final
day. That scenario didn’t materialize on Sunday, as both
players went over-par, allowing a slew of players back in the
hunt. When regulation play ended, three players had edged
lose from the pack to tie for the lead at 139 (5-under) —
Wilson Day, Raleigh (71-68), Taylor Zoller, North Charleston,
SC (72-67) and Caleb Sturgeon, Laurens, S.C. (70-69). The
ensuing playoff lasted just one hole. Day made a routine
fairway-to-green par, while Zoller and Sturgeon found bunker
difficulty at Mimosa’s 18th hole.

011 participants had to battle unforgiving winds
left behind by Hurricane Irene during the 36 holes
they played at the Donald Ross-designed Mimosa
Hills Country Club in Morganton, N.C.
Taylor Coalson fired rounds of 67-70 for a 7under total and claimed the championship title.
Coalson got his score to 10 under for the tournament
through his 33rd hole, and he held a four-shot lead
over Austin Langdale at that point; however, Coalson
proceeded to double-bogey No. 16 and bogeyed
No. 17, while Langdale, who was in the group
ahead of Coalson, parred in. Coalson came to
the final hole knowing he had to make par for
the victory, and succeeded. Coming in at a close
second place (6-under 137) was Langdale. Tied
for third place at 4-under par were Miller Capps,
Drew Johnson and Tanner Owen.
In the girls division, the excitement went on to
extra holes with first-place finishers McKenzie
Talbert and Kelli Murphy. They started by replaying
the 18th – Talbert barely missed an 18-footer there,
while Murphy also left her 12-foot putt hanging on
the lip. At the next hole, the par-4 fourth, both girls
made pars to push the sudden death match to another

avis Bateman outlasted Ben Schlottman with
a birdie on the first playoff hole to capture the
Boys Championship, while Ashlan Ramsey
claimed the Girls Championship by a resounding
six strokes over Eunice Yi and Louise Oxner.
Following Saturday’s opening round, Davis
Bateman of Charlotte, NC and Ben Schlottman of
Advance, NC were tied for the lead in the Boys
Championship with rounds of six under par 66.
Throughout Sunday’s final round, the two traded
places atop the leaderboard; however, William
Rainey of Charlotte, North Carolina created quite
a buzz around Mimosa Hills early in the final
round. After an opening round one under par 71,
he surged toward the top of the leaderboard with
an opening nine of 30. However, a costly bogey on
the par four 16th would leave him with a round
of 66 and a share of third place with William
Gordon of Davidson, North Carolina at seven
under par 137.
Approaching the final green, Bateman held a
one stroke advantage over Schlottman, who hit his
approach shot to fifteen feet at the final green.
Having already secured his par, Bateman could
only stand and watch as Schlottman converted his
birdie putt to force a playoff. The two returned to
the eighteenth hole for a sudden death playoff,
hole. Finally on No. 5, Talbert had to hit her second
shot from Bermuda rough and maneuver around a
tree, but still managed to knock it on the green and
give herself a downhill 20-foot-putt for birdie, while
Murphy had a downhill 15-foot-putt for birdie.
Talbert ran her putt 4-footer past and then lipped out,
and Murphy made her 3-footer for the win. Katelyn
Dambaugh, the runner-up at the 2010 U.S. Girls’
Junior, finished third at 4 under.
Fun facts about Talbert and Murphy: Earlier in the
summer Murphy defeated Talbert, 3 and 2, in the
semifinals of the Carolinas Junior Girls
Championship. Talbert headed to Ireland a few
weeks after the 2011 JCJI as a captain's pick for the
Junior Solheim Cup.
Talbert has played in three Joe Cheves Junior, finishing
as the runner-up in 2009 to Kaitlyn Rohrback
(Tennessee) by one shot (71-75). She finished eighth
in 2010 (72-76).

After Schlottman missed his birdie attempt, the
stage was set for Bateman, who courageously
rolled in his putt for a hard earned victory.
Competing in his fourth and final Joe Cheves
Junior Invitational, Bateman will play collegiate
golf at UNC-CH.
Ashlan Ramsey of Milledgeville, Georgia and
Louise Oxner of Greenville, South Carolina began
the final round of the Girls Championship tied for
the lead after opening rounds of three under par 69.
After beginning her final round with a pair of
birdies on the first two holes, Ramsey extended her
lead to four shots at the turn. Her lone bogey in the
final round came on the difficult par 3 13th, but
her six birdies helped lead her to a round of five
under par 67 and an eventual six shot victory over
Oxner and Eunice Yi of Evans, Georgia. Ramsey,
the third ranked player in the country, will play
collegiate golf at Clemson University. Her victory
at the JCJI adds to her already impressive resume,
which includes victories at the Junior Heritage
and Georgia Junior PGA Championship, and a
Runner-Up finish at the 2012 United States
Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship.
Rounding out the top five were Sydney
Legacy of Lexington, South Carolina at 143 and
Katelyn Dambaugh of Goose Creek, South
Carolina one shot back at 144.

Honorary Starters for the 2016 Joe Cheves Junior Invitational
Mitchell McGlamery, Combat Engineer
North Carolina Army National Guard
Mitchell McGlamery grew up in Morganton, NC,
beginning his junior golf career at Mimosa Hills, under the
guidance of former Head Professional Dan Dobson and the
late Joe Cheves. During his junior career, he played in five
Joe Cheves Junior Invitationals, winning the 2008 Joe
Cheves Memorial Scholarship, and ending his JCJI tenure
that year with a 4th place finish. Mitchell took his golf game
to the collegiate level at USC-Aiken, before pursuing a brief
professional career on several mini tours in the southeast.
On September 5, 2013, Mitchell enlisted in the North
Carolina Army National Guard, completing Basic Combat
Training and Combat Engineer School at Ft Leonardwood,
Missouri. Upon Graduation, he was assigned to Alpha
Company, 236th Brigade Engineer Battalion as a Combat
Engineer Dismount. Mitchell currently resides in Charlotte,
NC, where he is a senior at UNC-Charlotte, majoring in
Criminal Justice.
In celebration and appreciation of our armed forces,
Mitchell will also be tending the flag on the 18th hole during
Sunday’s final round, along with Roy Walters, former Air
Force Staff Sergeant.
Honorary Junior Starter, Harper Best
Harper Best is a 4-year-old future star. The daughter of
Thomas and Hallie Best, her grandfather is former Mimosa
Hills President, Jim Best. Harper and Jim come out to the club
every Wednesday for a fun day playing Golf, the Game of a
Lifetime. She is currently a dancer, and aspires to be an
Olympic gymnast.
Harper is an honorary junior starter, hitting a ball in the
opening ceremonies of the 2016 Joe Cheves Junior in honor
and memory of her Mimi, Mikki Thomas Baker,
Mikki was a Joe Cheves Junior family member, and loyal
volunteer since the inaugural event. She died on July 25, 2016
following a 13-year battle with brain tumors.

The Joe Cheves Junior Invitational @ Mimosa Hills has become one of the most
anticipated junior golf tournaments in the Carolinas. Since its establishment in 2003, each
year the JCJI has added a unique and innovative touch to make it the special tournament
that it has become — Scholarship Program, Honorary Starters, Golfweek/Titleist event,
AJGA Performance-Based event, Live Scoring, personal player introductions, milkshakes,
traditional Scottish bagpipes, etc.
In 2011 Carter conceptualized a new campaign for the Joe Cheves Junior, to benefit
the local community in an area that is vitally important. However, at that time, he was
already too ill with cancer to implement it. The family of the Joe Cheves Junior, and
many of our volunteers and supporters, have been personally touched by cancer. Last
year we introduced a program called Feathers Fighting Cancer. Cancer is a disease that
will directly affect one of two men, and one of three women during their lifetime.
Our corporate sponsors are Richard Breeden and the John Thomas Family.
They have pledged to partner $5 for every eagle, and $1 for every birdie, recorded in
the tournament. In addition, we will have a donation location at the 18th green for
voluntary player and guest participation. There, players, families or guests can participate
by making a fixed donation, or by challenging their favorite player (25¢, 50¢, etc for
each birdie and eagle from that player). Participation will be strictly voluntary, and can
be anonymous. The money raised will help the local community in the fight against cancer,
going to the Cancer Center at Carolinas Healthcare System Blue Ridge.
The 2015 field tallied 686 birdies and 31 eagles. That’s a lot of feathers flying at
Mimosa Hills.

irst round leader, Ryan Stachler of Alpharetta, GA fired a final round three-under-par 69 to capture
the boys championship, and Reona Hirai fired a record-breaking eight under par 64 to win by
a single stroke.
Following Saturday’s opening round, Stachler held the lead by a single stroke over Blake Fiest. On
a day marked by record setting scores, Thomas Eldridge of Raleigh, NC made some noise early in the
final round by firing an impressive seven-under, the low boys round of the tournament, to post the clubhouse lead at six-under. Playing in the final group, Stachler began his day at even par through six holes
and saw his lead quickly evaporate. Not to be rattled, Stachler went on to birdie holes #7,9, 12 and 14
to jump back into the lead. Standing on the 17th tee, he had a one-shot advantage over Benjamin Griffin
of Chapel Hill, NC. Griffin birdie 17 to take a share of the lead, but bogeyed the eighteenth to fall one
shot short. Stachler parred his last two holes to capture the title.
After round one Reona Hirai, a Furman University commit, was trailing by two shots behind future
star Madison Moosa, three years her junior. She was one shot behind two other young participants,
Emilia Migliaccio (class of 2017) and Jennifer Chang (2018). Playing in her final Joe Cheves Junior,
Hirai put on a show for the crowd under a perfect cloudless day. She put together a record-setting 64
round with perfect balance, shooting sub-par 32 on both nines. Her score not only won her the 2013 title,
but she set a course record, as well.
2014 Results
I
n a weekend full of record-setting performances, Coleman Self of Greenwood, SC, likely set the
record that will stand the longest at the Joe Cheves Junior Invitational at Mimosa Hills Golf Club.
Self, whose previous low round was 65, carded a 10-under par final round of 62 on Sunday climbing
out of a four-stroke deficit to start the day, and running away with a four-stroke victory.
Self (67-62—129; 15-under) shattered the 36-hole event record by four shots, and his Sunday score
established a new single-round record at the event, going one shot lower than the previous record of 63
which had been tied Saturday by overnight leader Mark Lawrence of Richmond, Va.
Self also came within one shot of the course’s tournament record of 61, which was set in an eGolf
professional event earlier this summer. The 2015 Clemson recruit did not bogey a hole all weekend in
his second tournament appearance. On Sunday, he played in the final group and birdied Nos. 1 and 2
before an eagle at 3. He then parred out on the front side before a birdie at 10, eagle at 12 and birdies at
13, 15 and 16.
On his first eagle of the day, Self hit driver, 4-iron in the rain, and then chipped in. He then chose
driver, 7-iron and driver, 8-iron to get to the pair of back-nine par 5’s in two shots apiece.
“I knew I had to get out of the gates early, and I did,” he said. “Then I kind of went cold, but birdied
10, and the eagle on 12 was big. That jumped me up the leaderboard, and then I chipped in (for birdie)
on 13 from just short of the green. “This course sets up well for me. It was fun.”
Alex Smalley of Wake Forest (11-under) finished second, one shot ahead of both Lawrence and
Benjamin Shipp, and two clear of Trevor Phillips.
On the girls side, the top two golfers from Saturday dueled in Sunday’s final 18 holes. Shannon
Brooks of Vienna, Va, and Jennifer Chang of Cary both ended up shooting even-par 72s, as Brooks
claimed a one-shot win at 8-under.
But Brooks trailed by two shots through 14 holes until a late three-shot swing gave her the title in
her second year playing the event.
“I knew that I could do well, because I was putting really well all day,” said Brooks, who finished in the top five last year at Mimosa and will play collegiately at Tennessee next season. “I hit
a few really close iron shots, but more importantly, I was able to make the putts when it counted.”

Testimony: “I wanted to say thank you for the great times we have had at this tournament over the past several years. I wanted to let you know how much this event has meant to my family. Three years ago, Stefan wanted more than anything to play
in the Joe Cheves Invitational. It came down to one of the last criteria events to get in. He had to win to get the invitation, and
he did. I remember how excited he was the first day of the event, and how nervous I was. I remember listening to the introductions of the players and saying to my friend, “Wow, these kids are good. I only hope Stefan doesn’t finish last.”
“At that time Stefan has never played in an event with this class of talent. I was shocked at how well he played. I was
also very proud of the integrity he showed by calling a penalty on himself, even though the kids in his group told him not
to. (Brewer’s called-penalty on himself resulted in him finishing second by a shot in the 2006 event.) I also remember Joe
Cheves putting his arm around my son and telling him how proud he was of him. This tournament changed my son’s life and
future. Since then he put together a pretty good junior career. Yesterday, I was sitting on the 18th green when Stefan made his
last putt of the day. It was for birdie. It was a great way to finish an event which meant so much to our family. We will never
forget the Joe Cheves Junior Invitational and the great times we had there.”

The Northern Junior Championship is open to amateur Boys and Girls
who have not reached their 19th birthday and have not entered college
by the date of the event. Applications are available online beginning
March 15th, 2016 and the field is selected based on a set of entry
criteria established by the Tournament Committee. Additionally, players
may gain entry through a local qualifier held each year.
The 36-hole stroke play event is contested over two days at New Haven
Country Club in Hamden, Connecticut and is open to amateur boys and
girls under the age of 19 who have not entered their first year of college.
Our goal is to provide the same first class championship experience and
red-carpet treatment that the best national events around the country offer.
The 2017 event, our 16th annual, will be contested on August 7th – 9th.

Scholarship Program
he Joe Cheves Junior Invitational tournament committee will generously award four college scholarships for deserving
student-athletes. The Joe Cheves Junior Invitational is proud to offer the Joe Cheves Memorial Scholarship, the Carter
Cheves Memorial Scholarship, the Eddie Erwin Memorial Scholarship, and the Mimosa Hills/Dan Dobson Scholarship.
The Joe Cheves and Carter Cheves Memorials go to two outstanding senior men or women competing in the Joe Cheves
Junior Invitational. The Erwin Memorial and the Mimosa/Dobson Scholarships go each year to deserving Burke County
students with an interest in golf.
Joe Cheves Memorial Scholarship
Joe Cheves spent a lifetime in the game of golf. He began caddying, at age seven, at Cheraw Country Club in South Carolina. He
turned pro at age 19 and embarked on an illustrious career as a club professional and competitor in the Carolinas PGA Section, as well
as PGA Tour events and USGA championships. Cheves was a member of the PGA of America for 70 years. He was a consultant,
teacher, diplomat, businessman, friend, and playing partner, reaching legendary status in all categories.
On Aug. 27, 1999 Cheves set a confirmed world record, touring the 6,250 yard Mimosa layout in 64 strokes (8-under), which calculated
to 17 shots under his age of 81. On April 6, 2006, Cheves again went 17 under his age with a two-under 70 at age 87. He first shot his age
in 1982, when he was 64, and he bettered his age over a thousand times in his golf career.
He has membership in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, the Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame, the Carolinas PGA Hall of Fame,
and the Burke County Sports Hall of Fame.
Joe Cheves passed away on July 31, 2007. His memory and legacy will live on with the Joe Cheves Junior Invitational and the Joe
Cheves Memorial Scholarship.
Carter Cheves Memorial Scholarship
Carter Cheves had a passion for junior golf. It started as a young boy, playing at Mimosa Hills, where his father was the club pro, and
reached a new high as he enjoyed the junior circuit with his children, Carter and Emily. In 2003, he found a way to combine his work and
dedication, by showcasing the talented junior golfers in North Carolina and the
southeast, and honoring his father with an event like no other. Every year,

Eddie Erwin Memorial Scholarship
Eddie Erwin was a promising junior golfer at Mimosa Hills in the early
1970’s. He was the son of the late Lawrence “E” Erwin and Betty “Bangs”
Erwin.
In 1973, at age 15, a motor scooter accident left him blind and severely
injured. He graduated from North State Academy in Hickory in 1977, and earned
a business degree from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg in 1981.
Eddie recovered the best he could. He would eventually play golf again,
and win a few blind golf tournaments, including the 1985 Canadian Blind
Championship. He finished runnerup twice in the United States Blind
Championship and third once. Eddie was a regular participant in the Ken Venturi
Guiding Eyes Golf Classic at Mt. Kisco CC in New York for many years.
Eddie loved playing the guitar and banjo. Eddie Erwin passed away in 1988,
at age 29, from lymphoma. The Joe Cheves Junior is honored to present this
scholarship in his name.
Mimosa Hills / Dan Dobson Scholarship
In its grand and glorious history, Mimosa Hills Country Club has meant so
much to so many and has greatly influenced the lives of many people, young
and old, in Morganton and Burke County. Mimosa Hills is a golf club with a
treasured history, beginning with its construction in 1929. Members have come
and gone through the years, and each has fond memories of Mimosa Hills.
Dan Dobson assumed the Mimosa Hills head professional duties from Joe
Cheves in 1981. One of the most respected golf professionals in the Carolinas,
Dobson has been an exemplary PGA professional. It’s only fitting that this
scholarship bear the name of this truly great golf club and its head pro for 30+
years.

C
arter Cheves had a passion for junior golf. It started as a young boy, playing at
Mimosa Hills, where his father was the club professional. A group of young
golfers could always be found at the course, and staying there from early morning
until dark was the norm. Skills were honed, friendships were bonded, sportsmanship was developed, and it was a safe place to hang out. The special memories of
traveling with his family and friends to junior tournaments, and the thrill of the
competition, stayed with him throughout his life.
After graduating from North Carolina State University, and marrying childhood
sweetheart, Jan, work and family responsibilities took precedence in his life, but
Carter never forgot the fun and excitement of junior golf. After their children
Carter and Emily were born, he rekindled that passion for youth golf. The family spent many summers going from tournament to tournament, as he once
again enjoyed the simple pleasures of the game and the contentment of being
on beautiful courses, teaching his children as his dad had taught him, spending
fun family time in hotels and meeting other young golfing families.
Carter worked in the sports business for years, first at Coman Publishing
Company, and later in the athletic department at North Carolina State University. In
1995, he took over the American Golf Association, his father’s company, and began
taking senior citizens on golf vacation packages across the country and in Latin America. During this time, he
began to plan for working with junior golf again.
In 2003, he found the means to combine his work and passion, by showcasing the abundance of talent
among junior golfers in North Carolina and the southeast. There were plenty of junior tournaments, but he
determined to gather the best of the best in one great weekend of superior competition. Honoring his
father’s lifelong commitment to junior golf, he approached Mimosa Hills Country Club with the idea of
conducting the most elite tournament in the Carolinas. Not just one more junior tournament. THE tournament
that college coaches would anticipate for its collection of outstanding potential recruits. It would be a firstclass event to bring recognition to the magnificent Donald Ross- course and highlight the southern hospitality
and beauty of Morganton. Most of all, he would
make it so special that every year players would
put it on their ‘must-play’ list.
Since 2003, the tournament has increased in
prestige, attracting the best players in the
Carolinas, and beyond. Every year, Carter added little touches to make it more special for the players
and their families. In 2006, with a determination to
give back to his community and the sport he loved,
he began a scholarship program, providing financial assistance to support college education for two
residents of Burke County, and for one special
player in the Joe Cheves Junior Invitational.
This tournament was the professional headline
of Carter’s life, coming second only to his love for
his family. He conducted the first nine events, laying a strong foundation for the tournament to continue. After a four-year battle with metastic
prostate cancer, Carter died on April 11, 2012. His
passion lives on.
