rized, protected, idyllic... nestled in the
heart of the most famous skiing areas in the
Tarentaise Valley, Sainte Foy is the epitome
of nature and charm. A far cry from the frenzied
activities of large ski resorts, it embraces laid-back
simplicity. With its rich, traditional architectural
heritage embodied by its hamlet listed as a
Historical Monument, its colonnaded houses,
chapels and chalets made entirely of stone, wood
and schist, a truly authentic Alpine atmosphere
can be found. You'll love strolling along the narrow
lanes of its hamlets revealing charming restaurants
and lodgings of a nature akin to top-of-the-range
establishments. It is a key destination for lovers
of Alpine skiing, with the resort developing, in
addition to its skiing area, a number of forest
routes and off-the-beaten-track nature sites. Heliskiing is common practice there, allowing one to
hurtle down the snow-capped virgin slopes of the
Ruitor Glacier, and complete a challenging run of
the famous north face of the Fogliettaz. Sainte Foy
is also well suited to family holiday enthusiasts
owing to its steady-pace skiing area and dabble
in the domain of a spa break. Its spa centres offer
personalised, themed therapies and treatments,
allowing for total rejuvenation. Sainte Foy: a rare,
precious gem.
A secret that's whispered
in the ear...
but never too loudly!
3
Located 98% within the Vanoise National Park partnership zone, the
Sainte Foy resort is surrounded by a protected environment where
nature, undisturbed, reigns supreme. Nestled around the chef-lieu
and the Bonconseil resort are around ten picturesque hamlets, where
ancient chapels and houses built with traditional architecture enhance
the snowy scenery. Barely twenty years after its establishment, Sainte
Foy has grown in a controlled manner, currently offering around forty
lodges and chalets to an unassuming clientèle, who are sensitive to
the atmosphere that the resort exudes.
"Authenticity and Savoy tradition
are the keywords underpinning this
unique mountain-top gem."
Sainte Foy, a unique, protected site
"Made in Savoy" architectural heritage
In Sainte Foy, architects have chosen to protect the ski resort's traditional atmosphere,
by building the chalets with a view over the south-western slope. Naturally, local stone,
wood and schist have made their way into the recently constructed buildings. Noble
materials are used to perpetuate traditional dwellings, imbuing the chalets with the
aesthetic of a by-gone era, with balconies, columns and pitched roofs. The hamlets
exude charm, with its dwellings blending into the background, inviting the snowy
scenery to take centre stage.
A listed village waiting to be
explored
Le Monal's hors-piste ski route
FOCUS on... Its colonnaded houses
The hamlet of Le Monal has been listed since
1987 owing to its historical architecture and
landscape, a closely guarded secret in Sainte
Foy, and one well earned. The excursion starts
at the top of the resort, on a nearby slope
where the snow turns into virgin snow. Skis
sink into the powder snow, while the passing
scenery puts on a spectacular show. In the
valleys of the Vallon du Clou, we come across a
few sleepy houses, before crossing vast, wild,
snowy expanses. Then, unexpectedly, around
the corner of a forest of fragrant larch, peeks
Le Monal, lying peacefully, perched up high in
front of the Mont Pourri Glaciers. The Alpine
hamlet in the midst of which nestles the SaintClair chapel is symbolic of authentic Savoy.
The village of Sainte Foy is home to a number of colonnaded houses which have become a
rarity across the Tarentaise Valley. Of Valdôtaine origin, these columns support the roof overhang,
facilitating air flow and the movement of the building's occupants between the various floors while
remaining sheltered from bad weather. Symbolic of the resort, we find them most markedly in the
hamlet of Le Miroir, a protected site, as well as in La Mazure, Montalbert, Le Baptieu, La Thuile,
and in the Bonconseil resort.
Protection charters and mobilised inhabitants
Two Sainte Foy Tarentaise charters assist in respecting its traditional architecture. In 1990 the
first came into being in the form of bill of special requirements, requiring builders to use local
materials and limit the number of floors in their buildings. In 2006, the second charter compelled
the resort's retailers to use signboards and other signs made of wood, thus upholding the
rustic aesthetic of Savoy. Also “molly coddled” by the locals, a local association took charge of
refurbishing Sainte Foy Tarentaise's "cultural heritage", tackling the renovation in particular of the
chapels of Bonconseil, Saint Clair, la Roche and, in the not too distant future, the Chapel of Le
Miroir which today is listed as one of France's Listed Buildings.

Spectacular scenery that's a firm favourite
Le Vallon du Clou, perched at 2,000m above sea level, between valleys and steep
glaciers, is considered one of Savoy's most noteworthy sites, and one still marked
by its pastoral activity. Listed in March 2013, this non-mechanised, hors-piste area is
thoroughly enjoyed through excursions supervised by professionals. As is the hamlet
of Le Monal, it is one of the batons of Sainte Foy's natural heritage.
Eco-friendly ecotourism, the 4-star Etoile des Cimes****

authentic playing fields. Everyone is free to make their mark on these partially

Introductory freeride courses for adults
As organiser of two major freeride events in Sainte Foy - the Grand Derby and Freeride World

gently sloped areas. Easily accessible at the edge of the piste, novices can step into the shoes of
adventurers. This provides a taste before taking on the ski resort's other routes. And for our young
