Gloster's roots can be traced all the way back to West Africa in 1960, where a band of
passionate entrepreneurs and furniture makers took the first steps on a long journey. By the
early 1970’s, increased demand and access to plantation grown teak led us to move our factory
to Indonesia. Today, the same passion, conviction and pride that launched the Gloster brand,
continues to fuel our business. We may live in a different world than the one occupied by our
founders, but one thing remains the same - we are furniture makers whose sole focus is to
design and build the world’s finest outdoor furniture. Because we believe.

TEAK
The benchmark hardwood for fine outdoor furniture for more than 700 years. With a beautiful
buffed sheen or a soft natural finish, every piece of Gloster teak originates from carefully managed
plantations and is thoroughly inspected to ensure that quality endures. A close-grained hardwood
with a high natural oil content, teak is exceptionally hard wearing, highly resistant to rotting and
almost impervious to the effects of sun, rain, frost or snow - the first and only choice of timber
for outdoor furniture. Because it matters.

INNOVATION
Gloster is bound to both history and a tradition of fine craftsmanship. Our furniture is not the
result of random mass production - human hands have created every rounded corner and every
joint. Our customers must be able to feel the link to themselves when they buy our furniture.
There must be a common history present, and a narrative of the life that we love to live. The
furniture must speak a language that we understand - a language that awakens our curiosity.
But we do not wish to stagnate in the past. We look forward and outward, so the past and future
merge into a bold present to which we can all relate. Because we believe.

Skills & loyalty. Gloster and fine craftsmanship go hand in hand. Our furniture is not the result of
random mass production - human hands have created every rounded corner and every joint, and
the quality of the furniture is the result of our employees’ knowledge and skills. All of the craftsmen
in our factories are proud of their ability to process wood and upholstery. They are craftsmen to
their fingertips, and have worked with their trade for years – exclusively for Gloster. We look after
them and are proud of them. Because we care.
PLANTATIONS
Transparency & honesty. Gloster’s production of teak is characterised by our approach. We
understand our resources and we know our wood. We only harvest what we have planted
ourselves, and every tree that is felled was placed in the soil by one of the Gloster plantation’s
workers - workers whom we have known for a lifetime. A Gloster teak tree has a lifecycle of at
least 50 years - and our wood can always be traced back to its origin. We believe that our
customers must be able to trust us, so we treat the world, its resources and its people with
respect. This is a core value at Gloster. Because it matters.

Of course, great manufacturing is wasted without great design. Gloster currently works with
several world-renown designers to create timeless outdoor furniture. Once a concept is
approved, designers work closely with the development team at our factory to further refine their
designs. And even in this digital age, we insist our designers travel to and spend time at our
factory so they get to know our people, our raw materials and our philosophy. Because
we believe.

The benchmark hardwood for fine outdoor furniture for more than 700 years, teak is a beautiful
golden brown, close-grained timber with a high natural oil content. Exceptionally hard wearing,
highly resistant to rotting and almost impervious to the effects of sun, rain, frost or snow, teak is
the first choice timber for outdoor furniture.
At Gloster, we use only the finest plantation grown teak, which is carefully nurtured an average of
50 years before harvesting.

production of our furniture. Extensive use is made of powder coated
stainless steel & aluminium, man-made wicker and sling material and there
are specialist departments within our factory entirely devoted to the
working of these materials to the same high standards as our teak
components.

Teak’s tight grain and high oil content
make it exceptionally resistant to the
elements. At Gloster, we use only the
finest plantation grown teak, which is
carefully nurtured an average of 60 years
before harvesting. After more than 50
years and 10 million pieces of furniture,
we have seen our responsible forestry
practices not only serve the environment
but also contribute to the growth of a
superior lumber product.
Our buffed finish utilises a wet sanding
and buffing process that yields a
luxuriant shine. Sanded to a smoothness
beyond that of our natural teak, the
buffing process heats the natural oil of
the teak, draws it from the timber and
spreads it across the surface resulting in
a lustrous polish-like finish that is 100%
organic. Exposed to the elements buffed
surfaces will turn the beautiful grey
patina of standard teak, yet when
protected from moisture and ultraviolet
they will retain their buffed sheen.

Our aluminium and powder coated
stainless steel collections both utilise an
electro-statically applied polyester
powder coat finish, which completely
blankets the surface of each piece. The
result is a deep, rich finish that is
extremely durable, corrosion resistant
and virtually impervious to moisture.

Crafted from 304-grade stock, Gloster
Stainless Steel represents the industry
standard for quality and design. The
electropolished surfaces of each piece
yield a lustrous yet corrosion-resistant,
low-maintenance finish. Electropolishing
is an electrochemical process whereby
the combination of an electrical current
and a strong acid removes much of the
iron from the surface of the steel, which
leaves a lustrous, shiny surface and
greatly enhanced corrosion resistance.
Our entire Woven range is handcrafted
using lightweight, corrosion resistant
powder coated aluminium frames clad in
the highest quality manufactured fibre.
Soft to the touch, this remarkable
polyethylene material is completely
weatherproof and resistant to both tears
and ultraviolet light.
Gloster ceramic table tops are made
from a double-layer ceramic slab. Whilst
the name suggests fragility, ceramic is
actually harder than granite and is
workable using techniques normally
applied to glass and natural stone.
Ceramic table tops are chemical
resistant, fireproof, UV and heat resistant.
Water absorption is close to zero,
therefore, table tops are also completely
frost-proof and weather resistant.
HPL (High Pressure Laminate) is a flat
panel derived from thermosetting resin,
which is reinforced with wood-based
fibres and manufactured under high
pressure at high temperature. We use
only the highest grade of HPL to ensure
exceptional resistance to ultraviolet light,
moisture and weather. Regardless of
surface colour, HPL edges will always be
black. And, while HPL is highly scratch
resistant, deep scratches will reveal its
black core colour.
Gloster acrylic stone table tops are
comprised of approximately 30% acrylic
resin and 70% aluminium hydroxide, a
natural mineral obtained from bauxite
aluminium ore. The inventive combination
of acrylic, natural minerals and pigments
produces an even coloured, non-porous,
surface that combines elegant
sophistication with exceptional heat,
impact, scratch and ultraviolet light
resistance.

THE TEAK STORY
A luxury timber valued both for its beauty and strength, teak is
indigenous to just four countries in the world - Burma, Laos,
Thailand and India. However, due to excessive, unsustainable
logging over the past century, natural teak forests have practically
disappeared in all of these countries except for Burma.
Fortunately for the world, teak continues to flourish in plantations
throughout South and Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America.
It is from the well-managed, Indonesian plantations of stateowned Perum Perhutani, on the island of East Java, that we
source our teak.
We asked Molyono, the Sawmill Manager at our factory in
Indonesia, to fill us in on a few interesting facts about the
plantation teak we use to make our furniture…
What is so challenging about sourcing teak?
Teak is one of the most sought after timbers for high end furniture
production and as such there is a growing Global demand. Teak
is not indigenous to Indonesia, it was brought to Indonesia by the
Buddhist monks in the 16th Century from Burma and it was then
expanded into larger plantations by the Dutch to service their
ships plying the Dutch East Indies spice routes.
All Indonesian teak comes from plantation sources controlled by
Perum Perhutani, the government body that controls all the
plantations across Indonesia.
To ensure Gloster can obtain sufficient teak resource, we have a
team of 22 graders who spend the majority of their time travelling
to over 30 different locations across Java to select the ideal logs
for our production. When selecting logs, our graders select the
best logs with the fewest natural defects. This way, we ensure
we obtain the best quality and yield recovery to maximise this
valuable resource.
What’s the ideal conditions for a teak plantation in
Indonesia?
Teak trees are not indigenous to Indonesia but the climatic
conditions on Java are ideal for growing teak. Teak grows best in
sub-tropical conditions with temperatures ranging between 17 43 Celsius and with an annual rain fall of 1250 - 3750mm. In Java,
teak can grow on a variety of soils, but for the best results, it
needs moderately fertile soil with humus rich top soil - well
aerated and free draining.
How would you characterise the teak wood in
general?
Teak is widely known as the most valuable tropical hardwood and
is mainly used for luxury furniture, ship and decorative building
purposes. With its high natural oil content, teak withstands
extreme weather conditions and is extremely stable once properly
seasoned by kiln drying.
How can you identify the perfect Indonesian teak
wood in terms of age, appearance & oil content?
Symmetrical in shape with limited surface defects such as knots
and scaring. We look to choose logs that have a thin sapwood
layer, which normally also goes hand in hand with a tree that has
grown at a slower growth rate, meaning higher levels of density
and oil content. We only choose logs with a minimum age of
approximately 35 years and upwards to ensure the timber is of
sufficient quality, whereas other companies use teak which is only
10 years old and has little density or oil content.
Any other stories to tell about teak wood on Java?
Teak plantations are really no different than any other crop, except
that the growing cycle is far longer. It can take anything from 35
to 50 years for a teak tree to fully mature – Teak is a noble material
and not something that can be rushed! The teak plantations in
Java have been managed over countless generations by Perum

hectares of teak, making them the largest teak plantations in the
entire world. Perum Perhutani also works extensively with local
communities during the rotational plantation cycle, where they

Contrary to popular belief, natural finish teak furniture does not require any special maintenance
routine or any additional protection apart from occasional cleaning. Left to age naturally outside,
the colour will gradually change to a soft, silver-grey as the pigments in the surface layer of the
wood begin to fade away. We recommend that you allow your natural finish teak furniture to
weather this way and simply clean thoroughly once or twice a year with our cleaning products.
Furniture may also benefit from an occasional light sanding to remove any raised grain and restore
a smooth finish to the surface.
Gloster buffed teak benefits from an enhanced surface preparation procedure, where the natural
oils already contained within the teak are brought to the surface and burnished to produce a rich
sheen and a consistent colour.
Used outdoors, buffed teak will weather exactly the same as natural finish teak when exposed to
the elements. After the first few exposures to water, you should expect the surface grain to rise
slightly, but there will be significantly less raised grain on buffed teak than on natural finish teak.
Over time, the natural teak colour will also begin to fade away and the furniture will gradually
weather to a soft, silver-grey.

Gloster outdoor covers are made from taupe coloured Weathermax, a heavy duty 100% solution
dyed polyester material.
Weathermax is a performance cover material combining UV resistance, water resistance,
breathability and durability. The ability of the fabric to breathe is essential in reducing dampness,
heat build-up and condensation. This in turn reduces the chances of problems such as mould or
mildew becoming present on the furniture underneath. We also add a ‘breather’ layer of Dacron
where the covers are in contact with flat teak parts like table tops to further aid breathability.
With typical attention to detail, each cover is tailored to the unique dimensions of our product,
ensuring a perfect fit. As well as covers for individual items, we also offer covers for all our stacking
chairs, meaning that a single cover can be used for a stack of four chairs. For several of our modular
furniture collections, adjacent covers are designed to zip together so the entire set can be covered
without the need to separate each item.
All covers feature either a strap-and-clip connector or elastic seams to ensure security against
wind.
