Undoubtedly one of the most shopping-friendly areas in Allentown, the 19th Street
District definitely has that “Let’s get out of the car and walk around” feeling. And whether you’re
looking for gems, greens, or scenes—19th Street has them all. (Check out Timothy Richard Fine
Jewelry, the renowned Farmers’ Market at the Allentown Fairgrounds, and catch an independent film at the Civic Theatre.) There are also great places to find high-fashion opticals, accessories, and personal pampering. Don’t forget to top off your shopping experience with a stop at
Hava Java for a cup of coffee and a treat. How sweet!

about the Lehigh Valley. Are any of your favorites on our must-list?

What Valley boutique has an Urban Outfitters meets Forever 21 vibe with feel-good
prices? From the moment you enter the glass double doors at Francesca’s Collections your
eyes might dart from one side to another then narrow in on the over-stocked jewelry table conveniently placed to greet customers. Francesca’s is overflowing with accessories, costume jewelry,
handbags, and unique boutique-style fashions, which makes it a practically one-stop-shop for
finding head-to-toe looks. We love the cocktail rings, but most of all you’ll find us picking up flirty
dresses to show off at our Style events.

Beer Heaven
Shangy’s is not just your run-of-the-mill beer distributor; they take
their “Beer Authority” motto very seriously. And while they are perfectly
happy to sell you a case of Budweiser, Coors, or PBR, they are more
excited about the exotic brews they are able to offer on a daily basis.
When you walk in, a sign says, “Welcome to Beer Heaven.” Indeed.
Javad Hadian and his family’s shrine to beer includes 2,000 types of beer from five continents.
Perhaps you would like some “Old Peculiar” from the UK, “Delerium Tremens” from Belgium, or
“Kingfisher” from India. They’ve got that. Come get it.

Most women we know shop… a lot. There
are so many great gift and specialty stores
in the Valley, it’s no wonder. And every
once in a while when the bargain hunter
in us needs to get out, we make a trip to
Marshalls/Home Goods.
Ladies, can you relate? There’s nothing like
the feeling of having someone compliment
you on a blouse, or a place setting, or a lamp,
and then being able to tell your friends that
you got a steal of a deal on your purchase
at Marshalls.
A few of our recent steals include a matching set of scarlet-shaded décor lamps for $70;
a large, round Roman numeral-faced clock
with a patina of fleur-de-lis insets for $20; and
a crisp and stylish black Anne Klein raincoat
for $30.
There’s always the surprise, too, of never
knowing what you are going to find.

A Knack for the
All-Natural
A healthier approach to life begins when you walk through the
front door at Nature’s Way in Easton. This all-organic, green grocer
also carries a variety of health aids and remedies you will not find in
the corner drug store. Check out their inventory of vitamins, anti-aging
products, and bins chock-full of healthy snack options.
At the center of the store, you’ll find an island stocked with healing
balms and addicting all-natural homemade soaps. From lemon-lime to aloe lemongrass, these
soaps have scents you won’t find in the grocery store. When you’re ready to go all natural, go
Nature’s Way.

If you’re anything like us, you love spoiling your pets. Just upstairs in the Chickadees
building in Historic Bethlehem is a special place for pampered pooches, making this one of
our favorite posh–or shall we say pooch–shopping spots. Le Chateau Bow-Wow caters to little
and large dogs alike with oodles for Poodles, loungers for your Schnauzers, and toys for Terriers. Unique gift ideas abound for dog lovers themselves in every corner of this boutique. Bring
your pup to try on the season’s most-wanted doggie fashions, or let him pick out a special treat
that’ll make his tail wag. Chateau Bow-Wow carries exceptional merchandise that you can’t find
anywhere else including natural products for an earth-friendly Fido. Snap on that leash and
start shopping!
Experience a small slice of Europe in
the center of Emmaus. If you happen to be
into either bicycles or coffee, South Mountain Cycles (aka SMC) is a
gem. If you’re into both, AND
you have a taste for things
European, SMC is an absolute necessity. Cycle over on
your bicycle on a Sunday
morning; order a cup of Fair
Trade espresso and watch the
people go by from your table
under a parasol. Then, wander
down to the Emmaus Farmers’ Market for some organic, locally produced
food (maybe some crusty French bread, or
locally produced cheese?) Or perhaps stay
inside and watch Formula 1 racing or European soccer on SMC’s TV. Either way, by the
time you leave you will be feeling a little more
continental than when you arrived. Note: SMC
is also the starting point for several organized
group bike rides. Check with the folks at SMC
for details.

As You Like It—and We Do!
What better place to reintroduce yourself to classic works of literature
than at the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival? With renditions of some of
William Shakespeare’s most revered works like “The Taming of the Shrew”
and “As You Like It,” along with productions of his more obscure works, the
Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival annually brings art and culture to the
Lehigh Valley. Plus, its London- and New York-style plays are affordable. Reasonable ticket prices, high-quality performances, and interesting interpretations, can be found every June and July at DeSales University.

The Crème
de la Crème
One of the Valley’s premier social events of
the season occurs every October at the Zoellner Center for the Arts on Lehigh University’s
campus. Every year, the black-tie Zoellner
Gala brings hundreds of arts patrons together
for a stunning performance and gourmet
dinner unlike any other. The planning starts
months prior with a gala tasting event to
ensure the menu is as exquisite as the evening’s performance. In the past, gala attendees have been treated to the talents of the
New York Philharmonic, Bernadette Peters,
and Lily Tomlin. This year save the date, October 10, for an unforgettable performance by
the incredible Natalie Cole.

Celtic Classic
Every September, Bethlehem’s Main Street and
surrounding area instantly becomes the epicenter of
Celtic culture during the Celtic Classic. Sounds of
bagpipes and grunting athletes fill the air as residents
and visitors sample traditional Celtic fare and fill their
mugs with beer and whisky in true European style.
This weekend celebration of heritage, arts, and all
things Celt-related is one public event not to be
missed. Established by the Celtic Cultural Alliance, the original event was rather small,
but it has certainly grown in 20-odd years with more than 250,000 visitors annually.
Join this year’s tradition September 25-27 with hundreds of special events and musical
performances.
INFO:
We love that the Allentown Symphony
Hall includes non-orchestral performances, including the Jazz Cabaret Series
in the lovely Rodale Community Room.
These monthly jazz performances provide
variety and range to our community’s
calendar of events. And with the quality of performers acquired by Allentown
Symphony organizers, you know each
performance will be music to your ears.
Throughout its history, Symphony Hall has
been host to a wide variety of musical and
theatrical performances, including Placido
Domingo, Rudolf Serkin, Carol Channing,
George Burns, Gracie Allen, Sarah Bernhardt, John Barrymore, Bing Crosby, and
Benny Goodman—to name a few. Make
sure to catch the next big name at the
Allentown Symphony Hall and the Jazz
Cabaret Series.

An Easton Tradition
Since 1752
Every Saturday morning from May to October you will find Easton Farmers’ Market bustling– the same way it has for the past 257 years. Easton has the distinct pleasure of being home
to the country’s oldest continuous open-air farmers’ market, beginning the year the city was
founded in 1752. Gathering in Centre Square is a plethora of local farmers, bakers, artists, and
other vendors providing fresh, locally produced goods. Not only is this a smart and inexpensive
source of great food and trinkets, it’s a social gathering for residents who wish to support their
community—one fresh tomato at a time!

City Cinema
Taking time to enjoy the simpler things in life is experiencing a resurgence, thanks to the
city of Allentown and the West Park Civic Association, who re-introduced the concept of a cinematic experience and an evening out. Last summer, their combined efforts offered the Valley
a series of films presented on alternating weekends in varying parks throughout the summer.
The result was good, old-fashioned entertainment for all ages. The success of last year’s series
is being repeated: Movies in the Park is back in 2009, filling the void of inexpensive Valley fun.

Pretty Pedi Deals
No appointment necessary. And that’s just one of the reasons why we love getting pedicures at UniqueNails in Allentown. Offering a menu that includes hands and
feet, paraffin treatments, and hair removal and waxing, UniqueNails pays extra close
attention to your needs with budget-friendly prices. The warm and inviting atmosphere
soothes as you sink into one of six oversized leather chairs in the pedi room. A relaxing
foot and leg massage and the paraffin wax foot treatment are included in the Deluxe Spa
Pedicure package, which, at a mere $35, is a truly comforting deal. We especially love the
booties they wrap around each foot dipped in wax–definitely a unique touch. If you opt
for the French pedi, don’t be alarmed by their special technique. It may appear sloppy, but
each tech is trained to use a thin paintbrush dipped in polish remover to create perfectly
straight lines. Choose your sheer base coat and voila! An hour later, you’ll stroll out with
feet that feel like a million bucks.

Private Lessons
Take a lesson from a pro—a golf pro, that is. Treating yourself to professional instruction
can be fun and pay off big. Jeff Bebbino of The Club at Morgan Hill believes in a custom
instruction for each individual. He uses your golfing goals to create a program just for you.
His fun-focused philosophy also helps: “Laugh at your bad shots, enjoy your good ones.”
Lessons with a pro will help you quickly correct mistakes, but more importantly will keep
it fun. And enjoying yourself is the key to success in this game.

Hello, gorgeous! It’s one of the best
hair product lines we’ve ever tried. After sampling many formulas, Ojon Hydrating Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner somehow
always ends up at the top of our list. We know
how easy it is to become skeptical about trying something new, but trust us, this is worth
the money spent. You’ll feel–and see–the
difference. Hair becomes shiny and more
manageable. Thin, limp hair feels thicker.
The rich, exotic oil from the Ojon tree in
Central America is what makes it so special.
In fact, the people of the Mosquitia are called
Tawira meaning “the people of beautiful hair.”
As if that’s not a sign, Image International
Vice President and Excape Hair Design Studio Manager Denise DeMas says all Ojon
products can be layered and recommends
the Restorative Hair Treatment for sizzlin’
summer strands.
If you’re still not convinced, try the travel
size available from Sephora for about $9 a
bottle. As Style girls, we stress great tresses
so this is one indulgence we can’t seem to
live without.

thoughtful, well-planned letter can express

creates your bakery favorites–bear claws,
turnovers, doughnuts, Danish, cakes, croissants, bread–in the Pennsylvania Dutch

Deli-icious
Syb’s West End Deli has become the destination of choice for legions
of loyal customers who consider their offerings the perfect comfort food.
Traditional favorites include their chicken noodle soup, pastrami on rye,
scrambled eggs with smoked Nova salmon, matzo ball soup, and Dr.
Brown’s soda. Chef and owner Kathy Diehl, a graduate of the Culinary
Institute of America, balances these old-school favorites with some more
modern dishes–try their roasted roots salad, French tomato salad, and
bean salad as a twist on a traditional side dish.

Caution: The smell of freshly made waffle cones may cause salivation to occur upon entry
to the Purple Cow Creamery in Easton. Just follow the murals to its off-the-beaten-path location
along the cobbled, all-pedestrian Bank Street, look for the colorful cone banner, and you’ll find
a hidden gem among ice cream parlors. Try its signature flavor—“Purple Cow,” an explosion of
raspberry ice cream packed with chocolate truffles. Its vibrant color is as exciting to the eye as
the flavor will be to your palate.
Lunch at the
Limeport
A Stylish Day-Starter
Stressful day? No problem. Head down to The Limeport Inn and relax on their tranquil
outdoor patio. Garden dining at the Limeport Inn is one of the best al fresco experiences
anywhere in the Valley, for either lunch or dinner. Beautiful shade trees, delicate water features, ambient lighting, and Chef Steve Yeager’s amazing menu combine to create a feast
for all the senses.
While Style staffers are avid fans of both breakfast and bookstores, rarely do the two
cross over in such a harmonious manner. Easton’s Quadrant Book Mart & Coffeehouse
has perfected this tantalizing combination. The Quadrant provides a rustic, artsy atmosphere
similar to the beatnik bookstores of San Francisco. Make your way to the breakfast nook that
emits smells of fresh coffee and short stacks only your mother could make. While the upstairs
houses many of The Quadrant’s varied collection of used books, the small round wooden tables
downstairs are situated amongst additional built in bookshelves. Behind the operation and the
griddle is JoAnne Moran, pseudo-mother to hundreds of artistic and intelligent Eastonians. From
her oatmeal, to her specialty omelettes, hot cakes, and scrambled eggs, the Quadrant provides
delicious home-cooked fuel for the brain at wallet-friendly prices.

While a fine meal is generally accompanied by a fine wine, it is now becoming
increasingly popular–and acceptable–for
fine food to be paired with a worthy beer. The
Farmhouse in Emmaus offers several opportunities throughout the year to sample this
particular form of beverage at their themed
Beer Dinners. Usually designed to accent
the season, recent dinners have paired three
beers with three courses. The Farmhouse
has become renowned for its exquisite menu
selections created from locally grown and

“Top Wine Cellar” recognition, and a passion for quality beer, and you have a food
