Metropolis Entertainment
In less than a single decade, Metropolis Entertainment has emerged
as one of the UK’s leading suppliers of audio visual technology,
special effects, simulation based attractions and, content
production.
Its skills extend from creative design through hardware and software
engineering, project management and systems integration, to onsite installations and on-going support.
Its business is truly international with recent projects as far apart as
Hong Kong and Muscat; Moscow and New York; Houston and Abu
Dhabi.

Its client base reads like a who’s who of the world’s most prestigious
museums, retail outlets, visitor attractions and corporations.
And its professionalism and capability is summed up by the receipt,
in 2004, of The Museum and Heritage Award of Excellence for its
3D/4D theatre installation at Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum in
the United States.

Metropolis’s rapid emergence has been achieved through organic
growth and investment in its core lighting, audio visual and special
effects businesses combined with the acquisition, in 2005, of AI
Camber Entertainment, the established world leader in simulation
based attractions for the entertainment, museums and corporate
market sectors.

In audio visual and effects, Metropolis has developed cohesive
sound, light and image technologies to create environments or
change moods in a wide range of venues from Museums and visitor
attractions to themed bars and restaurants. In all cases, Metropolis
can create complete system solutions from design through to
installation and, with Metropolis Films, even create original content.
3
Metropolis Entertainment, formerly AI Camber provides a wide
range of simulation and auditorium systems ranging from 8 to 20
seat capsule simulators to full 3D/4D effects theatres with up to 200
seats. Recent projects have seen the installation of an 8-seat
simulator and high definition effects theatre for Toyota’s new
regional headquarters in the Middle East, as well as the provision of
four mobile simulators for GE and Coca-Cola in the Olympic village
at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.

Morphis 20 Seat Simulator
The Morphis 20 simulator was designed in the late 1990’s to
move the capsule simulator product forward into the next
generation.
The design team of Steve Judd and Paul Spence at Camber
Entertainment was complemented by automotive stylist Steve
Harper to create a product that today has more than stood the
test of time. Central to the initial design criteria was to
incorporate the lessons learnt from production of the Venturer
14, of which some 600 or so were sold under the management
of Spence and Judd at Thomson Entertainment.

Significant improvements therefore materialised in both
aesthetic and ergonomic design as well as the use of new and
emerging technologies.
Continuous development and
evolution has taken place so that today’s Morphis benefits from
advances like 3D and high definition visual systems; LED lighting
and state of the art digital control.
More than 70 Morphis simulators have been built so the product
reliability and durability are fully proven as is the revenue
generating potential at the point of sale.

Motion Base
A hydraulically driven three degrees of freedom (3 DOF) motion
base provides the motive power for the movement of the
capsule which is suitable for bolting direct to a concrete pad or
to a fabricated base. This allows the passengers within the
capsule to experience accelerations in almost all directions,
according to the motion cues provided by the ride software.
The motion base is a fabricated steel structure complete with
three hydraulic actuators; these are coupled to industrial grade
bearings specifically selected for their maintenance free
properties. Smoothness of operation and positional accuracy is
achieved by use of proportional hydraulic valves and a
Pentium based control system using 12-bit resolution.
All component parts selected have been field tested on
previous applications and are low maintenance and highly
reliable, which are ideally suited for this application.
Hydraulic Power Unit
The Morphis MovieRide Theatre is powered by a 30Kw
electrically driven hydraulic power unit which has a 400 litre
capacity hydraulic oil tank. In built safety features such as low
oil and high temperature sensoring are standard.
Operators Panel and Control System
The actual operation of the simulator is straightforward; the
operator’s panel consists of three buttons, Load, Start and Stop.
Incorporated within the operators panel is an Emergency stop
button, as the name suggests, this is only depressed in an
emergency by the operator, by doing so the simulator will
automatically land and the doors open.
State-of-the-art technology is used throughout with the main
control components housed in a sturdy 19” rack. A more
detailed description of the main control components are as
follows: -
Morphis 20 at the Factory
A main Personal Computer (PC) controls the simulator, this
computer controls and synchronises all video (Digital Playback
System) and Audio (Surround sound amplifier) signals with the
movement of the motion base through the System Interface
Controller.
8
Pentium PC
The main control computer is based on a Pentium
motherboard, with processor speed running at a clock rate of
500Mhz or higher.
Metropolis Entertainment's specification as well as training of
operators.
Outdoor Suitability
Audio / Visual System
A unique surround sound amplifier is utilised to produce an
immersive sound field within the capsule.
Audio which
originates from the sound track that is stored on the MPEG
digital playback unit, is fed to the input of the surround sound
amplifier. The audio signal is then decoded and amplified, and
fed to four 200 watt full range speakers and two 400 watt sub
bass speakers, each strategically positioned within the capsule
to give the passengers an authentic surround sound
experience.
Whilst the ESP has been designed to high engineering standards
and is perfectly suited for indoor applications, for outdoor
venues it is strongly recommended that provision is made for an
overhead covering to shelter the unit from direct rain and
sunlight, complemented by a kiosk to house the operator and
control equipment.
Rear projection techniques are utilised to create a truly bright,
high resolution, visual image. The projector is based around the
latest Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology and coupled with
a high gain screen and mirror results in exceptional picture
quality.
Metropolis Entertainment has placed great emphasis on the
enjoyment of the overall experience in which audio visual
presentation combined with passenger comfort are critical.
Manuals & Training
A complete set of operator and maintenance manuals in
English will be provided when the equipment is ready for
delivery.
It is strongly recommended that Metropolis
Entertainment engineers undertake the installation and
commissioning at a site prepared in accordance with

Ride Films and Motion Programming
The standard equipment comes complete with 3 ride films from
our extensive library which currently contains over 120 titles.
Additionally, Metropolis Entertainment has a wealth of
experience in the creation of bespoke ride films. Working with
specialist film and TV companies to conceive, storyboard, shoot
and post produce films in either live action or computer
graphics. Recent projects in this area include a live action ride
in the new F-18 Super Hornet produced for the US Navy and a
computer animated experience of a journey through a jet
engine for a corporate client, GE. In the highly precise skill of
motion control no one has more experience than Metropolis
either in control technology or the all important aspect of
motion programming.

External Design and Theming
Very often a requirement for the use of the simulator is the
design and application of external graphics. These are most
usually in the context of promoting a specific ride, advertising
campaigns or sponsorship. Metropolis has probably more
experience than anyone else in the graphic design, artwork
and production associated with such graphics from simple
logos to extensive multi colour full vehicle creations. The
material used in the process is durable 3M vinyl which has an
extended life cycle, even in adverse weather conditions, but
which is easily removable for re-branding.
The high visibility afforded by these graphics treatments
combined with the dynamic styling of the simulator means that
the unit has huge ‘billboard’ value during both transit and
operation.

14
Mobile Morphis 20
To complement the static version of the simulator, a fully mobile
version has been developed for use typically at outdoor events
and trade shows. Available in two versions for towing either an
articulated tractor unit or a draw bar equipped box truck the
unit shares the same rugged, well proven design. Included in
the specification is all on board ‘life support’ systems to allow
remote operation including a diesel generator and stabilising
legs.
One of the most recent applications of the mobile ESP was two
units built for Coca Cola which were the central feature of that
company’s sponsorship of the Torino Winter
Graphic designs for Blackcats project
Olympics torch tour. During a 6 month period the simulators
operated in 60 Italian towns and cities including one month in
the central piazza in Torino during the Olympic events.
