Lowe Art Museum 1301 Stanford Dr., 305.284.3535 www.lowemuseum.org Ongoing Chihuly - the Macchia: A Study in Spontaneity Dale Chihuly is the world’s foremost glass artist and this exhibition of his Macchia series celebrates his remarkable powers of innovation and imagination. In Italian ‘macchia’ has come to suggest the spontaneous outpouring of artistic sensibility and by choosing the title Macchia for his works, Chihuly pays tribute to the Italian glass blowers on the island of Murano near Venice. He has adapted the Venetian practice of blowing bubbles of molten glass into metal molds for his own dynamic purposes and then ZWPUUPUN[OL]LZZLSVWLUPU[OLÄUHSTVTLU[Z of forming to awesome proportions. In these works, Chihuly encapsulates the traditional meanings of macchia: spontaneity, the close association between the artist and nature, and artistic collaboration with technique rather than control of it. Chihuly often refers to the mystery and magic of glass. The transformation of sand and a few other elements into glass seems truly magical. 10 am - 5 pm Monday - Friday Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts 481 South Federal Hwy 954.376.6690 www.wmoda.com Ongoing ArtLab @ The Lowe: GERMANIA! The threat of a catastrophic impact from an asteroid or comet is a staple of popular culture. If there was a dinosaur killer in Earth’s past, is there a human killer in our future? What are the chances and how do we assess the risks? For that matter, what are asteroids, comets, and meteorites, and where do they come from? While Asteroids and comets are popular subjects for movies like Armageddon and Deep Impact, they are also playing their own starring roles in NASA research. In 2001, NASA’s NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft dramatically landed on the asteroid Eros. In 2005, NASA’s Deep Impact’s probe collided with Tempel 1, exploring beneath the comet’s surface. In 2007, NASA launched the Dawn spacecraft to the Main Asteroid Belt. With all this interest, asteroids and comets are compelling subjects for an exhibition. $14 for adults and $12 for children (2-12) Monday through Friday - 10am-5pm and Sunday 12noon-6pm Museum of Discovery and Science 401 S.W.
