Kaboom! is a true artists happening, an explosion of self-made fun
and entertainment, a historical moment in our fair city where
we bring together in one room, a Who’s Who of artists
in a surprise-filled, creatively-combustible evening
of art and entertainment.
Welcome friends, to Kaboom!
Part showcase of the arts and artists in our midst,
part celebration of the generous spirit of Port Moody,
Kaboom! will spark your imagination, shake you up,
kindle the warmth of a wildly creative community eager
to welcome you, and leave you with this legacy compendium
to Port Moody based artists in the City of the Arts.
KaBoom! would not have been possible
without the generous support of our premier sponsors
Welcome Messages
On behalf of the City of Port Moody, I would like to welcome you to KaBoom!,
and congratulate you on being part of this great event. Whether as an artist
or a spectator, you are playing a part in making KaBoom! a success and it is
precisely this kind of connection and involvement that sets Port Moody apart.
As a small town, events such as KaBoom! become exceptional due to the
dedication of the participants and the incredible volunteers. Port Moody is
small in geography and rich in culture and community. KaBoom!’s volunteer
planning committee has brought together a Who’s-Who of artists. Each has
donated time or art work that contribute to the huge wealth and diversity
of artistic talent in our city. I have no doubt that the artists’ commitment
will be matched by the energy, good will and high spirits of our audience
members.
Mayor Mike Clay
Port Moody is very proud to be the City of the Arts - the high level of talent
around us builds our culture and civic pride, while bringing us together as
neighbours to celebrate the artistic gifts we are given.
Thank you to everyone who has been involved in creating KaBoom! - the
Arts And Culture Committee, the organizers and volunteers, the sponsors and
participants, and, of course, our artists, who really do give voice to the soul
of our city.
Congratulations to all the volunteers who put their time and creative energies
into what promises to be a most exciting evening. A special thanks to
Zoë Royer and Rose Kapp for their untiring efforts to bring us yet another
great cultural event to Port Moody, City of the Arts.
KaBoom is a perfect name for this event. As you mingle in the Galleria
a sudden burst of artistry can come at you from any direction. Turn around
and, right before your eyes, there will be something more.
This unique and very special event is not to be missed. See you there.
Councillor Gerry Nuttall
Chair, Arts and Culture Committee
Welcome Messages
KaBoom! has generated excitement and sparked the imaginations of all who
heard about it…
KaBoom! came to be because a group of amazingly dedicated, creative and
inspiring Port Moody individuals I affectionately call “The Dream Team” dared
to dream aloud of a true “artists happening”! Add to that one extraordinary
event coordinator who created the KaBoom! name and irresistible pop art
graphic, and voila! Something very special and unique happens...
Councillor Zoë Royer
KaBoom! Event Chair and Founder
An event that would draw Port Moody artists from their various corners and
showcase -- to themselves and the world -- the opulence of talent we have
in our midst. KaBoom! is a story that will stand the test of time by leaving a
legacy: At first glance, what appears to be the KaBoom! event catalogue is in
fact the first ever directory or “compendium” of over 130 Port Moody based
artists and already the envy of much larger communities! This directory of
artists will grace coffee tables in our fair city and beyond, endearing visitors
to our growing cultural district in Port Moody, City of the Arts.
As we found at each of our weekly planning meetings, when you put this
many creative minds in a room, you’re bound to find yourself in the presence of
something combustible. Welcome to KaBoom! the Port Moody Art Explosion!
It’s been a blast!
The Dream Team planning committee for KaBoom! has been akin to
conducting a fireworks display. Everyone had many colourful ideas with
combustible enthusiasm. We sparked ideas all through the process and
generated amazing solutions. We were loud and laughed in delight during
our meetings. We all agreed that KaBoom! would not be a stately affair.
How could it with the character of the team? Instead, the ideas that
exploded from our meetings produced an out-of-the-ordinary, creative,
party-like happening where the theatre stage was rejected and the
audience would be surrounded by the creative arts.
What a Team! Thanks for making it happen!

I’m a shy, introspective person, a dreamer and a romantic who
has always fallen ever so easily into a state of reverie.
From an early age, I was shown that making a living depended
on gaining positive recognition from other people. This made
me anxious and fearful and filled me with desperate energy,
but all I could think to do was to try to understand what others
wanted, and then to try to give it to them by contriving to
express my reveries in various passionate ways. Some people
didn’t like this, but a good many approved, and a few offered
me unpaid and paid positions as a leader of one kind or
another. Thus I was able to get by, and now I’m superannuated
and no longer depend so much on recognition, so I have much
more time for reverie.

Musician, singer songwriter

Inspiration can come without warning. Sometimes it manifests
while doing something as simple as taking a walk. Other times,
it can be something much more life changing. Either way, it’s
the process that is often overlooked by the observer. Great
artists typically have great formulas for creating their art form.
Born and raised in Port Moody BC, Greg’s current music style
shows influence from the era of traditional Appalachian
Folk music with a modern Southern Rock transformation.
Greg’s strength in music lies in his songwriting. His songs
are stories of struggle, adventure, and the crazy experiences
of life. Greg’s lyricism allows his audience to be transported
to a place and time offering them an escape from their
comfortable reality. For those that are close to Greg, they
know him as an incredibly prolific songwriter.

Dance is a feeling; just like Love. You have passion about it and you can
express it by feeling it not just acting it. I started dancing when I moved
to Canada in 2011 and it has been my passion since. I express my feelings
and love towards each culture by the cultural dances that my mom
and I choreograph in order to celebrate
peace among each culture.

I feel inspired by music itself and the feeling that you get
by either playing or even just plugging your headphones
in. Just being able to perform, write or listen to music I feel
is a blessing and I hardly ever go a day without listening or
playing music.
I have been connected with the city for the past 5 years
promoting/organizing/performing in showcases for youth
bands within the Tri-Cities. I have hosted events at venues
such as the Inlet Theatre and Kyle Centre. For events such
as those, myself and other event coordinators reached out
into the community to local grassroots stores/companies for
sponsorship and live event booths. Carolyn is a writer and theatre artist from Coquitlam. Currently living and
studying at UBC, she calls both Coquitlam and Port Moody her hometown.
A graduate of Gleneagle Secondary School, Carolyn has been involved
in a number of plays with Rebel Haunt Theatre, including performing in
and co-devising The Little Match Girl (2010), Entschuldigung (2011), and
Hometown (2011/12), all performed at site-specific locations around Port
Moody. She has also been involved in the SHIFT 1-Act Festival, directing her
own script Doctor Pennyweather’s Office in 2012 at the Inlet Theatre, and
stage-managing her script La Petite Paquita in collaboration with director
Nina Boosheri in 2013 at the Evergreen Cultural Centre. Outside of the
Tri-Cities, her play Trig Variations was featured in Vancouver Asian-Canadian
Theatre’s MSG Lab Play Workshop series in 2013, and she is running for her
second term as president of the UBC Players Club.

“Saying Yes” is a dramatic, site-specific monologue set in a coffee shop or cafetype place. Like our previous collaboration, “La Petite Paquita”, it centres around
one woman and the story that is both most difficult and most necessary
for her to tell. The woman, Elisa, develops an intimate connection with the
audience through which she can finally bring them inside her experience.

I have been actively involved in theatre for almost 10 years. I graduated
from the Douglas College Theatre program and involved myself in
community theatre (Rebel Haunt). I write and direct shows, and teach
musical theatre to young children.
Theatre is a form of expression that fully involves your body, heart, and
soul. You take those things, and you vulnerably display yourself to the
world for the sake of a story, for truth, and for art.
I do this because I believe in it. It’s absolutely magical.

Actor, music (vocalist, keyboards)
[email protected]
A throwback to the legends of the 60s and 70s, with a
contemporary elegance and urban edge that is all her own,
Deanna has created a pop sound both unique and inventive in
today’s industry. In ‘I Could Walk Away’, she delivers all the rock
power of Fleetwood Mac with the catchiness of that perfect
summer hit. Conversely, the rich vocals and honest lyrics of
‘The Fire’ provide listeners not just with the ideal love song, but
a song for all those who are familiar with love’s bittersweet
linings. Woven seamlessly together by the sensual edge of her
stellar vocal performance, Deanna’s debut is sure to appeal to
listeners everywhere.
I am a singer-songwriter and actress based in Vancouver BC.
In the current music industry I hope to bring back a fresh
take on American Rock, Folk, and Blues combined with an urban edge. My first two
singles “I Could Walk Away” and “The Fire” pay homage to the likes of Fleetwood Mac,
and K.D. Lang. As an actress I hope to continue to work in film and television as well as
one day do an international Fringe Festival tour with an original production.

I am inspired by music, dance, other artists and playwrights,
and by the many elements within my upbringing, life
experiences, and past that are difficult to isolate. I am
interested in creating challenging theatre that is an
experience as much intellectually as it is felt in the body,
and in making theatre accessible to audiences.
I long to inspire younger generations to pick up this craft in
its various forms, and realize its value in their own lives.

adapted the script as well as acting in and directing the

As a teenager growing up, all I ever wanted to do all day was
play my guitar. Over a decade later, and still not much has
changed. Except now I get to do it for a living - lucky me!
Despite coming from a mostly electric rock background
throughout my youth, my focus has been gravitating
stylistically towards acoustic folk, classical, and fingerstyle
guitar over the past year. On my own time, I enjoy recording
solo acoustic guitar arrangements of well-known and
popular tunes, including soundtracks to famous films.

Writing songs has become so important to me. What’s even more
important then that? Sharing. It gives a little solace to the crazy
thought process an artist goes through. It makes you feel not so alone.
I need to sing. It’s like breathing. “Don’t die with your song still inside
of you”
I started playing at Gallagher’s open mic night and my love for
performing stems from there. My “genre”, if I had to define it, would be
country-folk-pop. It’s easy to lose yourself in the artistic process, but
that’s why I love song writing. Because it can be nothing but the truth!

I play in a band called ADOB: facebook.com/ADOB.band, and I also play with
Taryn McMaster. Playing in both band and acoustic settings forces me to strive
for versatility. Ultimately, my goal is just to entertain, be the best musician I could
possibly be, and have a lot of fun doing it!
For me, being a musician means music is the first thing you think of when you wake
up and the last thing you think of before you sleep. There is a constant melody in your
head, your foot taps to a tempo at idle points in a day; your life revolves around music.
There are always new things to learn and new things to play; all you have to do is keep
listening. Link: http://bit.ly/Nb4PUu

Theatre
[email protected] | vimeo.com/jlwdesign
I am a graduate of Studio 58 and hold a bachelors degree in Performing Arts.
The bulk of the work that I create is a form of “performance” and is performed in
theatres. However, much of the work I create breaks out of the confines
of a tradition theatre, spilling into site specific and often nontraditional
performance spaces. Is this work still theatre? Well, that is part of a longer
and more academic discussion.
I’m trained in traditional theatre and I remain employed in that field
as a professional. Much of the work that I create on my own is far more
interdisciplinary and collaborative than what you would find in a traditional
theatre setting. As lofty and pretentious as this may sound, I have a very
straightforward and down to earth approach to art.
Glynis Whiting
Writer of novels
[email protected] | glyniswhiting.com
I’m working on my second novel in the Nosey
Parker Mystery series.
I’ve always told stories. My brain is wired that
way. Part of it is a fascination with people. All of
my writing, whether in filmmaking or prose, is
character driven. Whenever I look at a situation it
unconsciously becomes a tangled web of drama.
What motivates the people involved? How did they
get there and where are they going? I accidentally
catastrophize, which, inevitably, leads to stories.

Elham Sarvi
“I got inspired by each and every member of our awesome Dream Team; we had such fun
planning and organizing KaBoom!! It’s been great honor to be part of it. Such fabulous ideas
and amazing people.”
Elham studied Visual Arts at Soureh University in Tehran, Seneca College, CTSA and Emily
Carr University. She has participated in over 20 professional art exhibitions as an artist and
has over 15 years of experience as an art instructor. Elham is co-owner of ArtSpot Studio on
Clark Street in Port Moody and enjoys volunteering for the North Vancouver Arts Council and

Gaëtan Royer
“The City of the Arts tagline evolved from a simple label to become our identity. We must
continue to carve a bigger place for Arts in our public spaces, our budgets and our hearts. The
KaBoom! Dream Team created a showcase for the arts in Port Moody.”
Gaëtan Royer was City Manager for Port Moody and Metro Vancouver’s Chief Planner. An
author, architect, engineer, urban planner and multi-media artist, he uses photography,
painting, wood work and sketching to celebrate life and nature.
Geoff Scott
“I’m inspired by the many volunteers I know that work tirelessly throughout the Tri-Cities, such as
the team working to bring KaBoom to Port Moody. Especially challenging is the task of bringing a
new event of this magnitude to fruition. Congratulations KaBoom for being the spark to ignite an
event that will inspire us all.” Geoff is currently the board chair of Tri-Cities Community Television Society, working to bring
community television back to the Tri-Cities region. With 30+ years in the film and television
industry, he’s worked for Rogers Cable, Shaw TV, CBC, the Knowledge Network, and as an ACFC
accredited special effects artist in the film industry. Geoff also held the position of head of postproduction at Columbia Academy in Vancouver from 2007 to 2010, and is a former board chair of
Independent Community Television in Vancouver.
Helen Daniels
“It’s been fun and exciting being part of the KaBoom team taking it from an idea to a great
event. Planning meetings were lively as we brainstormed ideas, zeroed in on specific details and
gave KaBoom shape. KaBoom has all the makings to be very memorable this year and in the
future. It was great to see everyone’s enthusiasm and I was happy to host KaBoom meetings at
the Gallery Bistro.”
Helen has been developing her business, the Gallery Bistro, into a hub for creativity and
community with events such as pop -up theatre, music concerts, live radio broadcasts and
workshops. Art exhibitions are also part of the menu. A 32 year Port Moody resident, she
expresses her own creativity through photography; Lomography. She’s been proud to bring ArtWalk, Wearable Art Awards, PechaKucha and ArtistCircle to the region, and serve on Port Moody’s Arts & Culture Committee and Evergreen Line Public Art Committee.
The Dream Team
Jillian Hull
“A couple of years ago, I was part of an insanely fun group called The Art Core. It was this group
(and particularly Helen & Rainer Daniels) that first dreamed of an “artists happening” here in Port
Moody. But it was the KaBoom! Dream Team lead by Councillor Zoe Royer that really brought it to
life and made it a reality. What an inspiration to see the talent and expertise in our community!”
Jillian Hull is a member of Port Moody’s Arts and Culture Committee and a Director for the Port
Moody Arts Centre Society. A former arts journalist and college instructor, Jillian currently directs
her energies toward bringing together her interests in business, arts and social enterprise. Jillian
studied English and American Literature at New York University and Cornell University.

to apply my passion for design and creating books in making the KaBoom Event Catalogue.”

Nikki Bryce
“What a blast being a KaBoom-ite has been! A bevvy of diverse, talented, committed
people all passionate about the arts…what could be better? I am inspired that each
person I asked “Do you know that Port Moody is the City of the Arts?” said “Yes!”
An acrylic and watercolour artist, Nikki started painting with friends and soon found out
“THIS is IT.” Member & Show Coordinator with Port Moody Art Association, Nikki has a
VERY encouraging and patient husband.

The Dream Team
Rose Kapp
“It was a dark and stormy night when a certain white haired lady appeared on my doorstep
and asked me to be the event coordinator for an artist’s celebration. I said yes. Since then, my
involvement besides the organization of planning details is to steer the spirit and direction of the
project, focus the energy of the team, work with the City and participating artists to create an
exciting and successful outcome. An artist’s happening – it’s a dream I’ve had for some time!”
Born in Edmonton, Rose studied advertising art at ACA in Calgary. A graphic designer of 35+
years, her current focus is illustrative work. She lives in Coquitlam (shh!) but volunteers heavily
in Port Moody where she used to live.
KaBoom! Event Coordinator
Salomeh (Sally) Honormand
“Being involved in teamwork helps me to know myself better and make positive improvements in
my life. Its important education you don’t find in a course or school. Playing on KaBoom was fun!
Working with the Dream Team of fourteen amazing professional people was simply awesome;
it brought me joy and satisfaction. There’s a kind of happiness and pleasure from volunteering in
community projects like KaBoom that you don’t always find in a paid job.”
From a background in engineering, Salomeh became interested in art when she arrived in Canada.
Taking art and design at NSCAD University opened doors in her professional life, and she’s since
volunteered and worked with many art galleries, festivals and art projects across Canada. Salomeh
opened her own Port Moody art studio in 2010 where she teaches classes and workshops. She’s
currently manages several projects in design, communication and construction.
Sarah Dixon
“I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to an event that fosters creative connections. As an
artist, I believe the existence of art and artistic creation is a basic human need. I see KaBoom as a
gathering that celebrates all art and the amazing act of creating it. An opportunity for artists and
the community to come together and honor the creation and presence of art in our lives is not to
be missed!”
Sarah grew up immersed in art and theatre. She attended the Kootenay School of the Arts where
she studied writing and mixed media. Later on, she was given the opportunity to work alongside
her father in the Gleneagle Secondary drama department. A prolific theatre artist, Sarah has
written and directed over 20 original shows. In 2009, she created Rebel Haunt Theatre, which
focuses on producing original micro-epic site-specific theatre in and around Port Moody.
Zoë Royer
“Reflecting on the Artists Meeting Artists event of March 2013, I hoped for a day when artists in
our community would come together, know one another well and have their work be instantly
recognizable throughout the region. Four months ago, I handpicked the KaBoom Dream Team;
highly skilled, creative, dedicated, energetic individuals to help make this dream a reality.”
Zoë Royer is a city councillor, dental professional, entrepreneur, fierce protector of the
environment and ambassador for the arts. When not at work(?), Zoë can be found celebrating
her marriage to Gaëtan, being in nature, painting, sewing, playing harp or going to the ballet.
