Today, nearly every nation in the world belongs to the UN: membership totals 191 countries. The UN faces the challenge of focusing global attention on how people can improve their lives and conserve our natural resources in a world that is growing in population, with ever increasing demands on food, water, shelter, sanitation, energy, health services and economic security. These Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), endorsed again at the 2005 World Summit, along with the Millennium Declaration, are now at the heart of the global development agenda and at the center of Tanzania’s National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty, “MKUKUTA”. Targets in primary school net enrollment, equity in primary education, access to safe water and reduction of infant mortality have already been met or are on track to be met by 2015. Despite important progress, efforts need to be accelerated to reduce maternal mortality, to halt and reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS, to achieve greater gender equality and to cut extreme poverty by half, all by 2015.
