The United Nations
The United Nations was established in October 1945 by 51 countries committed to preserving peace through international
cooperation and collective security. Today, nearly every nation in the world belongs to the UN: membership totals 191
countries. The UN faces the challenge of focusing global attention on how people can improve their lives and conserve our
natural resources in a world that is growing in population, with ever increasing demands on food, water, shelter, sanitation,
energy, health services and economic security.

The UN system in Tanzania
In Tanzania, 17 resident Agencies, Funds and Programmes represent the United Nations, all working as a team under
the leadership of the UN Resident Coordinator. As an impartial trusted partner, the UN in Tanzania plays a number of
key roles supporting the development and implementation of national policies to more effectively respond to
Tanzania’s priority development and humanitarian challenges.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
In September 2000, at the United Nations Millennium Summit, world leaders agreed to set a time-frame for measurable
goals and targets to combat poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and gender inequality.
These Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), endorsed again at the 2005 World Summit, along with the Millennium
Declaration, are now at the heart of the global development agenda and at the center of Tanzania’s National Strategy
for Growth and Reduction of Poverty, “MKUKUTA”.

Tanzania has embraced the MDGs within its national Poverty Monitoring System since 2001 and has made considerable
progress in achieving them. Targets in primary school net enrollment, equity in primary education, access to safe
water and reduction of infant mortality have already been met or are on track to be met by 2015. Despite important
progress, efforts need to be accelerated to reduce maternal mortality, to halt and reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS, to
achieve greater gender equality and to cut extreme poverty by half, all by 2015.

This 2006 UN calendar is proud to give a face to the people behind the statistics and celebrate the efforts and
commitment of the Government, private sector, civil society, development partners and all the people of Tanzania in
