involvement and investment in Alma
College creates a partnership with
amazing outcomes. I wish I could shake the hand

College matters.
One of our students once said, “At some schools
you can learn how to change the world. Or, you
can go to Alma and start doing it while you’re
here.” Our students do just that and continue
as alumni to make an incredible impact. So

College in 1886, and Dr. Robert D. Swanson, ninth president of Alma College from 1956-1980.

Missy Linehan Williams ’85 remembers
her senior year at Alma College when she
student-taught under the direction of fifthgrade classroom teacher Joan Godfrey.
“She was a wonderful teacher,” Williams
recalls. “Joan and Don Godfrey paid for
my senior year at Alma, and my graduation
open house was at her home. When I interviewed for a teaching job at Adrian Public
Schools, Mrs. Godfrey called the school and
advised them to hire me.
“The little things the Godfreys did for me;
they were always so happy to be generous
with their time,” she says.
The lesson stuck with Williams, who
has taught fourth grade at Adrian Public
Schools for 29 years. Missy and her husband, Keith, recently funded the Don ’56
and Joan ’57 Godfrey Endowed Scholarship
to honor the Godfreys.

“At this point in our lives, we are able to think
about these things,” says Keith Williams.
“The Godfreys’ generosity always stuck with
us. Now we have a child in college, and we
know that in the first years, students have a lot
of scholarships.
“My parents had established an Alma
scholarship for kids in New York state,” says
Keith. “That planted a seed in my mind;
what if we could do something like that for
the Godfreys? We are giving back.”
The Godfrey Endowed Scholarship recognizes deserving students at Alma College, with
first priority to students majoring in education
with preference to elementary education.
Keith and Missy are the parents of college
junior Kelsey, high school senior Natalie,
and seventh grader Claire.

Art Bova ’68
Art Bova ’68 recently donated a painting
to Alma College that depicts a scene from
a major trial in New Mexico in the 1970s.
Four men were convicted of a heinous
crime and sentenced to death row, but it
was overturned a few years later when
another man confessed.
“The case illustrates why eyewitness
testimony and the death penalty can be
questionable as to an avenue for justice,”
says Bova, who owned the painting for 30
years. He delivered the painting and spoke
with pre-law students in September.
Bova has traveled to all seven continents,
all 50 states, and almost 100 countries. He
loves that Alma has a 4-4-1 academic calendar, which encourages students to study
abroad for their one-month spring term.
“One of my first experiences of travel outside of the country was at Alma,” he says.
As a freshman, he traveled with a friend
in the TKE fraternity who had married
a woman from Jamaica. They hitchhiked
all over Jamaica, and strangers offered
them food and places to sleep.
“That was one of the most memorable
travel experiences that I’ve ever had,”
Bova says.
He encourages students and alumni to
continue to develop the personal relationships and take advantage of opportunities
to travel that make Alma special, and

“I was pushed by Dr. Vickery, my
adviser, to ask tough questions
about why things were happening,” she says. “I wasn’t just
getting the work done, but I was
truly looking at my internship as
a case study.”
“I stayed connected with Dr.
Vickery, who had invited me
back to campus a couple of times
to present to some of his organizational communication classes,”
says Henry. “It was not only a
compliment, but it was really
exciting to show and demonstrate
to students sort of what that
course of study translates into in
the business world.”

college while they’re there.
“A big reason why I like to do that is because I’ve had great mentors both
while I was at Alma in terms of professors and staff members and also
alumni mentors afterward,” he says.
Sparks recently visited three alumni in Albuquerque, N.M., who are at the
opposite ends of their careers. They have been “great mentors” and made a lot
of connections for him as he prepares to move on to the next stage of his life.
Kenny Sparks ’13 (right) graduated from Alma College with
a degree in sociology and plans to receive his Master of Social
Work from the University of Michigan in December.
Even though he is a young alum, Sparks has actively
referred high school students to Alma College. But he’s
selective about who he refers.
“I think of people who are kind of like me; students who
don’t know where they’re going with their career,” he
says. “A big university would be somewhat overwhelming
to them. I look for people who are strong academically.

“That’s something that’s really valuable to me and something I recognize is
outstanding about Alma. We got to sit down and talk about some of the same
things that made our experiences great,” he says.
“There’s a strong sense of pride and loyalty that alums have to Alma, even
past young adulthood,” he says.
One of the alumni he visited was Art Bova ’68. Sparks had the opportunity to
the see the painting that Bova donated to Alma College.
“The college has just given so much to me, both as a student and as an alum,
that I recognize that it’s kind of my role as an alum to give back,” he says. “It’s
also kind of a selfish thing — because I like to see people who I am close with in
my life have the same opportunities.”

Costello Winter ’86 were involved in everything.
“I loved being in choir and still sing in my church choir,”
says Elyse. “I loved spending time on the beautiful
campus as the seasons changed. I loved spending time in
Dow in the labs. I especially missed the closeness of the
Alma College community when I went directly to Michigan for grad school — what a culture shock!”
What Paul values about Alma are the friendships he
developed, including those through his fraternity, Sigma
Chi, and with faculty such as M.J.J. Smith, his mentor
and advisor, and Doc Pattison, professor of English and
advisor to the school newspaper.

“I received financial aid while at Alma, and with the cost of education
today, it is even more important to support the school financially,” says Paul.
“I had a great college experience during my ‘four-year summer camp,’ as
M.J.J. used to say. I hope others get to have the same chances that I did. Not
just to learn, but to grow as a person.”
Paul, an attorney, and Elyse, a former health care administrator and now
substitute teacher, live in Grand Haven.
“Paul and I have donated to Alma for the past several years — it’s our Christmas gift to the current students,” says Elyse.
In fact, the Winters have donated to the college for 20 consecutive years.
“Scholarship funds enabled me to go to Alma,” says Elyse. “An Alma education and experience allowed me so many things in my life so far, and I believe
everyone should have the same chance. It is always important to give back,
not only to Alma but to your community, church, etc. If you haven’t started
yet, start now!”
