Pinewood Derby World Championship
After placing in the top five at the South Mountain District’s
Pinewood Derby, Jason V. and Adam V. from Pack 346, and Ian W.
from Pack 317 went on to compete in the World Championship
Pinewood Derby. On Saturday, June 25th, more than 300 Pinewood Derby Cars were registered into one of these two categories:
Stock - no modifications to the car are allowed, and Pro Stock:
certain specific modifications are allowed. The South Mountain
District’s three racers all competed in the Pro Stock category.
It was a beautiful sunny day in New York City’s Times Square, and perfect weather for a full day of racing.
Registration began at 8am, after which
two tracks raced 8 cars at a time, one
track for each category. The top 15 cars
in each category were then selected to
race for top honors. There were many
smiles and cheers, and of course there
was plenty of good sportsmanship. Racers came from nearby councils such as New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, and other east coast states such as Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Maryland. Other racers came from
Maine, West Virginia, Ohio, with some coming all the way from Texas, Arizona, and even Long Beach, California!
At the end of the day, your proud participants final standings
were as follows:
Adam V. in 34th place with a time of 3.1223
Jason V. in 32nd place with a time of 3.1211
Ian W. in 16th place with a time of 3.0718, narrowly missing out
on a spot in the top 15 in the world by 20 ten-thousandths of a
second! The difference in the average time between 1st and 16th
was less than 0.13 seconds.
You can be proud of the effort and conduct your scouts showed. They
had a wonderful time, and I’m sure they encourage future winners in
the district to consider participating next year. It was a very exciting day

Commissioner Corner
What is Roundtable?
Should I go?
The Round Table we first think of is King Arthur’s famed table in the Arthurian legend, around which he and
his Knights congregated. As its name suggests, it has no head, implying that everyone who sits there has equal
status.
Part of the commissioner service responsibility is to help units share
information about the best (and not so great) things they’ve done – the
vehicle for this is Roundtable.
On the first Wednesday of each month (except July), the roundtable
commissioners provide information on topics YOU have requested –
sometimes a Scouter (maybe you!) from South Mountain provides it,
and other times we bring in someone from the community who has
experience and knowledge to share. We have followed the presentation
with a discussion amongst Scouting peers of a topic for 15-20 minutes –
“how to handle electronics”, “what does boy-led mean?”, “how to plan a
pack meeting”, and “what was the best adventure/trip your unit ever did?” were just a few of the meaningful
discussions…
It’s an opportunity to look a little further ahead, and maybe find skills or tools that will help you be a better
leader – BSA requires a lot of training, but to be effective, learning should be continuous. And don’t forget to
include members of the committee! Maybe it’s the job of someone on the committee or a den leader or an
Assistant Scoutmaster to attend roundtable and bring back the ideas!
We do all of this based on what YOU have said or shown you need – which is why we sent you a survey in email
a couple weeks ago. We’re going to plan the Cub Scout and Boy Scout roundtables for the August 2016 through
June 2017 program year. If you haven’t responded yet, please do so – whether you have a topic you want to
know more about, or a topic you would like to present to other unit leaders.
If you want to have direct input in the planning, we are meeting at Camp Minsi on July 5 at 9:30 am – contact
Tamie Swain ([email protected]) or Arby Beisel ([email protected]) for more information. With
your help that morning, we can plan an excellent program for everyone. You can make a difference with just
one morning’s meeting.
Even with all your time with the scouts, why not spend one evening a month (from
7 to about 8:15pm) with adults? Talking with other adults (who may have the same
issues) about what you do and they do, allows you to share some information and
learn some great new ideas to try in your troop, pack, or crew!

Attention Scouts:
Our 9th annual Scout Day event this year will be Friday, July 29th from 12:00 pm to 4:00
pm. Gates open at 8:00 am for all of our patron’s convenience to park and purchase
merchandise before the event. We are looking forward to you coming!
We have planned a number of activities for the day including face painting, raffles,
educational activities, giveaways and numerous games. These activities are free for all
in attendance and will be located in our ‘Main Street’ pavilion in Chalet Village.

The Entrance Gate for you to use
o Please enter the Raceway through Gate #8 (adjacent to the large flag
pole). Once through Gate #8 make an immediate left and enter Chalet
Village through the gate directly in front of you. It will be clearly marked.
The location of Chalet Village on the raceway grounds, parking and grandstand
seating.
The activities run from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm after which all are welcome to stay and
watch the ARCA race.

Cost: $10.00 per person. Cost includes: Patch, two movies, games, camping overnight at the drive-in.
Who can attend? All registered Cub Scouts and their family members only. NO FRIENDS
Den Chiefs are encouraged to come with their Packs!
Deadline:
Registration will begin April 1, 2016 for Trexler District. Open registration for all other
Districts will begin May 15, 2016. Registration closes as soon as we fill each night. Last year’s event
was filled by early July.
Space is limited to 600 on Friday and 700 on Saturday night.
Due to limited parking spaces please car pool.
What should you bring? Small tent (size will be limited to 10 x 10), sleeping gear, your own water
supply, chairs, radio and breakfast. A radio is needed as the drive-in no longer has speakers!
 This is a Cub Family Camping Event. Cub camping rules outlined in the Guide to
Safe Scouting will be followed.
 NO SMOKING OR ALCOHOL AT THIS EVENT
 Adult/Chaperone MUST STAY with their children throughout the duration of this event!
 Use the trash cans provided.  No pets are allowed.
 No stove cooking or fires are allowed.
 Volunteer staff will be wearing yellow baseball caps.
 Please support concession stand open both Friday and Saturday night.
Send completed registration form, (following pages) & roster (list full name of each attendee)
along with a check made out to Minsi Trails Council.

Participant Qualifications:
Be a registered adult OR youth (14 years or older) member of the Boy Scouts of America
Adults and youth must be trained in their position
Be able to meet physical requirements of BSA Annual Health and Medical Record (parts A,
B, and C) in a backcountry environment
Must have their scout executive’s approval
Course Prerequisite Requirements:
1. Complete the following on-line trainings:
Youth Protection - (Venturing Version), Hazardous Weather, Climb on Safely, Safety
Afloat and Safe Swim Defense
2. Complete BSA Swim Check
Course Fees:
The fee for this course is $125 if paid in full by July 19, 2016. A $35 non-refundable deposit,
along with the completed application will reserve your place on the course. Course size is limited
to 48. A late payment fee of $20 will be added after July 20, 2016. Fees are used to cover cost
for meals, course materials, lodging, device and program.
Recognition:
Upon successful completion of the Powder Horn course, participants are awarded a certificate of
completion and the Powder Horn Device, which is worn hanging from the left pocket of the uniform.
Why Powder Horn?
Many Scouting leaders face one dilemma. A strong desire to provide fun and challenging
outdoor programs, but lack the knowledge and/or resources to do so. Powder Horn responds with

with valuable resources and contacts, to assist them in delivering the promise of Scouting’s high
adventure to youth.

Powder Horn is…
A training opportunity designed to introduce participants to activities and resources necessary to
operate a successful Venturing Ranger Award or Troop High Adventure program in several
ways:
 Help participants to safely conduct outdoor activities of a fun and challenging nature
 Provide an introduction to the resources necessary to successfully lead Venturers and older
Boy Scouts through a program of high adventure
 Familiarizes the participants with the Ranger program so that he or she can help Venturers
meet the requirements of the Ranger Award
 This course is based on the Venturing Ranger requirements giving participants an
introduction to outdoor/high adventure activities
Powder Horn is not a personal development or team-building experience. Its purpose is to
educate adult Scouting leaders about specific high adventure skills, to connect them to resources
to deliver those skills, and to get them excited about delivering those skills in an exciting,
challenging way to youth.
Powder Horn …
Courses include Ranger Core Requirements, at least ten electives, plus additional program
development information. It is intended to help participants get started finding and using the
resources needed to lead high adventure programs.
Topics we plan to cover
Backpacking, Land Navigation, Cave Exploring, Cooking, Life Saver, Outdoor Living History,
Shotgun, Rappelling, Cope, Physical Fitness, Plants & Wildlife, Leave No Trace, Emergency
Preparedness, Scuba, Pistol, Equestrian, Kayak, Expedition Planning, Fishing, First Aid, Fly
Fishing, Working with Teens
Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES is any Powder Horn participant required to participate in an
activity they are uncomfortable with. They may choose just to observe and learn.
Recognition:
Upon successful completion of the Powder Horn course participants are awarded a certificate of
completion and the Powder Horn Device, which is worn hanging from the left pocket of the uniform.

This is a YOUTH fishing derby. Families can fish in evening!
THIS EVENT HAPPENS RAIN OR SHINE!
Cost: The Fishing Derby is $3 per a person and includes patch. Overnight use of the camp’s tents and cots,
are $5.00 per tent. Tents fit two people and is non-refundable. Everyone who registers in your Pack will
be put in the same campsite so there is no need to reserve a campsite. Camp tents are limited to 298 campers. The earlier you register the better.
Deadline: Registration forms & patch orders must be received at Council No Later than July 16th.
Space is limited so if you know you're coming, please register early.
What do you need? You need to bring fishing pole/equipment, BAIT, sunscreen, hat, water bottle, rain
gear, insect repellant, camera (optional), money for camp trading post (optional) a tent if the camp is full,
sleeping gear, flashlight, chairs, & all meals for Saturday and Sunday! “ No Fishing License is required
during Saturday.”
