Harland Simon UPS Ltd is a provider of UPS Power Solutions for the transport:
network rail, light rail, underground, tram and traffic market sectors including
the Highways Agency.
We work with our customers in the transport sectors to ensure they receive
the best products and support needed to meet with the specification supplied
for uninterruptible power supply systems for rail, tram and traffic.
Where possible we offer COTS UPS products but when required Harland Simon
can call on its own in-house design and manufacturing team to allow for
modifications to the UPS system. These custom UPS systems can include
conformal coating of PCB, a change of standard cables to LS0H, higher ingress
protection to IP54 and beyond, anti-vibration or special paint finishes.
For specific rail UPS applications we can where possible, offer approved
products (PADS) but if not available we can provide project support to enable
the solution offered to go through the approval process.

Harland Simon as an independent power solutions provider works in
partnership with several of the world’s largest manufacturers of UPS
including Alpha, Eaton, Eltek, Emerson, GE and Riello, offering the best
solutions for the application to include system integration.
• Most competitive and technically suitable UPS products from a wide
range of UPS manufacturers’ products ranging from 250VA to 800kVA,
conventional UPS or 1ph/1ph modular systems up to 80kVA and higher
for 3ph/3ph.
• Range of Network Rail approved products, AC UPS single/parallel
systems of modular UPS systems which all depend on the application and
environment (indoor/outdoor) and space available.
• Dedicated in-house design and manufacturing capabilities able to
modify COTS UPS to meet with specific applications and to help guide
the product through the approval process.
Harland Simon supplies a wide range of IP rated enclosures, enabling UPS’s
to be used in harsher environments. Typically up to IP54 ingress
protection.
For some Rail/Tram and Highway applications we have worked with a
specified enclosure manufacturer to enable us to provide a power enclosure
which matches other equipment at a particular site or to a specific
size/colour to highlight ‘Power Equipment’ installed.
We can carry out the full installation of the enclosure with the wiring of
UPS equipment and batteries, programming of alarms and deliver to site
ready for connection to the AC mains and AC loads.
We have our dedicated in-house qualified team to carry out all installation
to the specification required.
Systems are often installed in locations
with extreme environments.
Factors such as temperature extremes,
dirt, dust and moisture put heavy demands
on standard unprotected electrical
equipment.

Harland Simon offers a range of AC UPS which have PADS approval
ranging from a 3kVA rack/tower single phase plug and play to 10kVA120kVA hard wired UPS with the option of short or long runtimes.
We can offer all UPS with higher ingress protection.
Harland Simon supplies a range of Modular UPS systems
comprising of DC/AC inverters, distribution, alarms and battery
monitoring.
These items can be supplied loose for fitting into your enclosure
or we can provide the system integration, commissioning and
programming of alarms.
Modular systems are available as a 1ph system from 1kVA to
80kVA and higher rated for 3ph systems.
Modular systems offer the following benefits:
• generally higher MTBF figures
• easier to maintain – fast MTTR (mean time to repair)
• hot swap rectifiers/inverters (no downtime)
• increased reliability with additional rectifier/inverter for N+1
We will size the system to support your full load and to recharge
the batteries within the time specified.
Depending on the load to be supported batteries will be in a
separate enclosure.

Harland Simon as a partner of FALCON (US) offers the following SSG rackmount,
tower, SSG-RP and NEMA configured wide temperature UPS systems.
Designed to operate from -40 C to +65 C with power ratings typically from
350w – 2kW.
Batteries are supplied loose for fitting within the enclosure.
We can also provide a full system design/integration as required.

Harland Simon designs a standard range of wall or panel mounted external manual
maintenance bypass switches (MMBS).
• MMBS available as rotary switch or static
• Ratings for rotary type switch – 20A to 160A, 2 or 4 pole
• Ratings for static switch – 10A to 16A single phase only
• MMBS escutcheon reads normal/test/bypass as standard. Other escutcheon plates are
available
• All enclosures are sheet steel design

Harland Simon has supplied direct to the customer and also via the main contractor for
the project at the time.

Croydon Tram Link
Thales (Bo2855)
Harland Simon was awarded the contract to supply AC and DC UPS to support the control,
communications and signalling equipment for the Croydon Tram Link.
The 28km network links Wimbledon in the west with Beckenham/New Addington in east via
Croydon town centre.
The contract was awarded to HS UPS by Rittal who was the subcontractor to Thales
Information Systems (formerly Syseca).
We supplied a COTS 2kVA UPS designed, manufactured and supplied with PDU combined with
maintenance bypass switch and contained additional AC/DC PSU’s for other loads to be
supported.
The Croydon Tram Link is now fully operational and proving to be a very popular and
successful venture.
Kings Cross NR
Optilan (Bo4363)
In 2005 Harland Simon was awarded the contract
to supply AC UPS and additional battery pack
equipment for the backup of communications
equipment at Kings Cross Station.
The specification demanded a UPS capable of
supporting a load of 50 watts for 12 hours with the
capability to recharge the batteries within a defined
period.
For this project we supplied an Eaton 9120-700VA
UPS along with our own manufactured battery pack
which had its own battery charger fitted internally.
Harland Simon UPS supplied 50+ UPS systems in
total.

Over a period of years Harland Simon has supplied
Chloride – LUL a number of IP54 19” rack UPS
systems.
These systems are built by Harland Simon using
Chloride’s Linear Plus UPS and Harland Simon’s
battery packs, chargers, distribution and wrap
around maintenance bypass switch.
Nottingham Tram
Bombardier (Bo2292)
Harland Simon was awarded the contract to supply to the main contractor UPS systems to
support various loads ranging from 3-5kVA for 23 tram stops in Nottingham.
Due to space restrictions within the customer’s enclosure, the UPS was designed to be installed
on a swing frame making access to the rear for maintenance and access to other equipment.
We supplied the MGE Comet Extreme 4.5kVA/6kVA UPS with VRLA 10 year design life batteries
installed in a separate enclosure to support the load for 3 hours.
In addition to the above Harland Simon was responsible for the design and supply of the
distribution panel and combined maintenance bypass switch to include additional power
supplies for auxillary output requirements.
In 2014 HS UPS was awarded the contract to upgrade the original UPS systems and to also
supply 28 UPS for the NET 2/3 extension tram stops.
