These can be heated in the nonKosher ovens as they are double wrapped for this purpose. In addition, one can order gourmet meals from caterers who specialize in mail order Glatt Kosher meals. These too are double wrapped and sealed to allow heating in a non-Kosher oven. Most of these establishments are most agreeable to provide cups of fruit upon request as well. Restaurants and Caterers: One of the difficult decisions that one must make when choosing a Kosher Restaurant or Caterer is how to determine the Kosher standard and what separates one from the next. Mexico .................................................................................................... 22 One of the main determining factors as to the reliability of an Updates & Alerts ................................................................................... 23 establishment will be the level of Hashgacha provided. There are Eating Out various types of food establishments and each Coffee shops: may need different levels of supervision. Unflavored coffee does not present a Kashrus Meat Restaurants or Catering: problem. This includes the various roasts, i.e. In general needs Shomer Shabbos person on site French roast, Spanish roast etc. Flavoring always at all times. This will exclude those restaurants needs a good Hashgacha. Some coffee shops that are owned and operated by their Shomer such as Starbucks have the flavoring in a bottle Shabbos owners and have occasional visits from and one can check for Kosher certification on the the Rabbi. label. Those that use flavored beans would need Fish Restaurants or Catering: a good Hashgacha on the roasting house. The The same as with meat applies. addition of milk is not a problem beyond Cholov Stam in countries when one can rely on the milk Vegetarian/Vegan Restaurants: being Kosher. Half and Half needs Hashgacha The severe issue of insects is prevalent as well when it contains preservatives. One should as non- Kosher wine, grape juice and oils being drink the coffee in a disposable cup as the mugs used among the ingredients. used may be used for non- kosher hot coffee Dairy or Pizza Restaurants: as well. An additional concern that has arisen These often do not require Hashgacha Temidis. is the washing of coffee pots in a non- Kosher However, as will all of the above, each case may dishwasher. This is done only in stand- alone vary as to how much it must be watched. type of coffee shops and restaurants but not in Amusement Parks in California........................................................... 22 kiosks etc. Yogurt Shops: Cruise Ships and Hotels: A common ploy is for the non- Jewish or non- Shomer Shabbos owner or workers to put signs in front of the machines bearing a Hechscher, claiming to be using a mix from Resorts, on occasion, advertise Kosher meals with full supervision. In cases where the facility does not include a Kosher kitchen, the hotel is 4 Southern California that reliable Hechscher. Obviously this is meaningless, as we cannot rely on such claims. Each store needs to be checked for certification on the store. Ice Cream Stores: There are franchise stores that must use the company’s product and one can assume that they are doing so as the penalty would be great if they vary. Then there are other types that are independent and are allowed to use many ingredients of their own choosing. These will need supervision on each and every individual store. Maaris Ayin: A Jew who brings a Kosher burger into a McDonalds to meet a non- Jew who will be eating McDonalds non- Kosher food would be a classic case of Maaris Ayin. A normal person would have the right to assume that he sees the Jew eating a burger in a non- Kosher burger restaurant. However drinking water there, or eating something Kosher in a hotel continental breakfast would not be a problem. Amusement Parks, Movie Theaters, Sport Stadiums: Dry roasted peanuts in the shell do not pose a problem. However, fresh popcorn cannot be used in any of the above locations. Even when the vendor displays a Kosher oil being used at this time, we have no way of ascertaining that non-Kosher oil was not used until now. If butter is being used it too may be of a non- Kosher origin. The beer and soda are often Kosher. Take Out: Often this may resolve a situation where one needs to eat in a place that does not have Kosher food on hand. Whether in Alaska or Hawaii, cruise ship or plane, non-Kosher home or hotel, one can always have a gourmet meal on hand with proper preparation. Many reliable Kosher food outlets gladly ship food to anywhere in the world, be it a hotel, cruise line or other. In general, when eating out, even in an establishment with proper certification, if there are any glaring “red flags”, it should be brought to the attention of the certifying agency . Southern California Los Angeles Area COFFEE SHOPS: Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf (KOLA): Each store displays its own specific Kosher LA (Rabbi Benzaquen) certificate. NOTE: some stores are Kosher certified for everything, while others only for beverages and some packaged foods. It is important to check each store for its certification. All Coffee Bean stores in the Los Angeles area (only) are under KOLA supervision for both drinks and food. Coffee Bean stores outside of the Los Angeles area should be checked individually for KOLA Hashgacha certificate. Starbucks: Some products are Kosher. All plain coffee without flavoring is Kosher. www. kosherstarbucks.com has a comprehensive listing. Due to a machinery issue of washing coffee pots with non- Kosher equipment, it is preferable not to use stand- alone/full service stores. Such stores often wash their coffee containers in the same dishwasher as non-Kosher utensils. Coffee kiosks and other small coffee outlets, such as can be found in supermarkets etc. do not have this issue. From The RCC: “Food Crafters” As a courtesy, the RCC would like to alert the public to a new trend that is fast spreading in Los Angeles and many other Jewish communities nation-wide. Traditionally, Shul events, Kiddushes and lunches were/are either prepared in-house or provided by a caterer certified by a reliable local Kashrus agency or Rav. The new trend is that a “Frum Party Planner” or “Food Crafter” will offer the prospective host an array of foods and desserts ostensibly all purchased from various certified outlets and craft them together into a full-fledged Kiddush and/or luncheon. Whereas a traditional caterer operates within the guidelines and under the supervision of a certifying authority, the Food Crafter is totally unregulated. Some areas of concern are: a.) Use of utensils borrowed or rented, either Kosher in origin or perceived as Kosher by usage b.) Herbs and Vegetables that have infestation issues c.) Non-Mevushal wines d.) Questionable hashgachas on packaged items e.) Numerous Chilul Shabbos issues Over the past several weeks there have been incidents where Rabbanim only became aware of this new arrangement in their own Shuls after noticing irregularities in Shabbos and Kashrus standards.
