You may hear terms as handlebar palsy, ulnar neuropathy, or carpal tunnel syndrome. The ulnar nerve supplies motor control and sensation to the hand/arm specifically to the ring and little finger. Inflammation occurs from compression of the ulnar nerve at the wrist or elbow. The ulnar nerve can be compressed at the wrist in the tunnel of Guyon as it passes thru into the hand between the pisiform and hamate or behind the elbow at the funny bone (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome). Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is less common; however the median nerve may be compressed from prolonged wrist hyperextension or direct pressure on median nerve from using top handlebars. Symptoms may include tingling, numbness and pain in ring and little fingers for ulnar nerve and 1-4th fingers for median nerve. There also may be weakness in the median and ulnar nerve distribution. Several things contribute to handlebar palsy: Prolonged positioning of hands on the drop handlebar. This position causes a stretch to the ulnar nerve/hyperextension of wrist Keeping elbow in a bent position for prolonged period of time may cause inflammation at the ulnar nerve at the elbow (using aero bars) Repetitive bouncing, vibration and shock absorbed from the handlebars. Indirectly - If your saddle is higher than your handlebars or if it is tilted downward it can cause increased forward body wt. distribution onto your hands and arms. Treatment: Change position as much as possible while riding long durations. Wearing padded gloves will help absorb the shock from rough terrain as well as extra handlebar padding. Splints and braces may help. Refraining from cycling is the hardest thing to do, but if your symptoms persist it is recommended to stop cycling. Riding a stationary bike will keep your conditioning level until symptoms have resolved. Anti-inflammatory PT or ice, U.S., ionto, ROM exercises for neck, elbow, wrist, fingers, and strengthening of weak muscles Surgery is rarely performed Continued next page. It is part of the TMBRA (Texas Mountain Bike Racing Association) Fall Series and takes place at Buck Creek Trails, Abilene’s great offroad trail system. Bent Wheel Bash draws hundreds of participants from all over Texas. Not only is there a race, there are also many other events going on during the weekend. These include a kid’s safety clinic, a kid’s course designed for even the training wheel set, and a first-time racer’s clinic for adults. There is also Abilene Guns ‘N Hoses, a competition between local police and fire departments. This will be the 4th year for Guns ‘N Hoses. It’s always fun to see which department comes out on top. And there is quite a bit of friendly competition for that honor! All these activities lead up to the actual off-road race which has age and ability categories for kids up to pros. Bent Wheel Bash has gotten many favorable reviews from participants, so this year looks to be even bigger than last. The best part of the whole event is that it benefits the Abilene Police Department. The expo area for the event is at the Police Training Grounds just north of Buck Creek Trails. All of the money raised through this event goes back to them! If you’ve never participated in Bent Wheel Bash, make plans to this year. This year it will be held on October 20-21. If you don’t want to race, then come watch. For more information, schedules, and cost, please go to http://bentwheelbash.wordpress.com.
