This massive art centralization allows us to admire the diversity of the artworks and highlight each artist’s unique contribution to the dynamics of artistic globalization. Exhibiting artists represent all of the trends of current art and express themselves through painting, drawing, sculpture, video, design or performance… Confirmed and developing artists mingle and invite the viewer to share their visions of the world, their dreams or their positions. Underlining its broad vision of art and of its current challenges, the fair renews itself via new poles in line with the evolutions of the art market: a wing dedicated to Indian contemporary art, curated by Fabrice Bousteau, a studio of engravings which is an invitation to create in situ works, with Fadi Mogabgab and the support of BankMed, the BYBLOS BANK AWARD for Lebanese photography will surely unveil new talents, a Design platform, by Philippe Trétiack which puts the young generation of designers in the forefront with the contribution of BLC Bank, and the «video projects» with a selection from Silke Schmickl … This edition of BEIRUT ART FAIR reflects the wonderful dynamic inspired by Beirut, this unrivalled city which attracts avant-gardes, creates a ferment of ideas and of encounters and remains, irrespective of the geopolitical context, a forum open to the outside world, to the future and to all cultures. Together with the fair, a new “outside the walls” with BEIRUT ART WEEK #2 is organized. An itinerary with the collaboration of Beirut Municipality and Solidere, with monumental works displayed on the streets and in the shops in downtown Beirut. From 17 to 24 September, BEIRUT ART WEEK#2 is making Beirut beat to the rhythm of contemporary art and invite artists to express themselves freely in the urban landscape of the capital. BEIRUT ART FAIR confirms the position of Beirut as the cultural and intellectual capital of the Arab world, at the junction between the East and the West. It is part of the international fairs dedicated to art and serves as a window for the ME.NA.SA. creation which is open to the world. BEIRUT ART FAIR left its mark on the map of international exhibitions and contributed to the international upheaval resulting from the globalization of the art market and to the movements of artistic communities. In this perspective, we are opening the first edition of SINGAPORE ART FAIR, which will be launched next November with a pavilion of honour dedicated to Lebanon. Our motivation is to build avenues between cultures, between the Middle East, Europe and Asia. Our passion is to promote an interplanetary dialogue, which is mainly premised on art. I would like to thank all the galleries that are participating in the fair, the speakers, the artists, the press, the friends, our partners and especially BankMed which is a great supporter of our ambitions, as well as our “dream” team without whom BEIRUT ART FAIR 2014 would have never seen the light. Laure d’Hauteville Founder & Fair Director 6 BEIRUT ART FAIR | CATALOGUE | 2014 Since its inception in 2010, BEIRUT ART FAIR established itself on the international artistic scene with the vision of a ME.NA.SA labelled art, which shaped its identity and power of attraction. In tune with the centers of interest of international collectors, the fair displays the creation of this region, which stretches from Morocco to Indonesia, in its wide diversity. 7 BEIRUT ART FAIR is organized by CEDRALYS SARL RCB 1011444 • VAT 2199202 Po.Box 116-2270 11 Madrassat el-Salam Street Beirut, Lebanon #BEIRUTAF2014 Facebook: BeirutArtFair Twitter/ Instagram: @beirutartfair [email protected] www.beirut-art-fair.com Tel. To that purpose, he presents “Small Art is Beautiful Dharma», an exhibition that approaches contemporary India through an exclusive selection of small-format artworks created by Indian artists and available for sale. The Dharma wheel, the symbol chosen to carry the message of this exhibition, is a solar symbol guaranteeing all interactions, a symbol of stability and continuity of the order and the uninterrupted circle of the world in motion. Within Indian societies, the concept of dharma relies and is built at the centre of the microcosm, and it links the human beings with the macrocosm. The tinniest particle is, at the same time, both the product and the support of the world’s order. The smallest thing is as powerful and as important as the largest one. Its imbalance could affect and even jeopardise the harmony of the whole, and it could lead, through a cause and effect phenomenon, to the destruction of the universe in its entirety. “Small Art is Beautiful - Dharma” plays on the harmonious interaction and the balance of forces: a geometrical and radiating scenography design, inspired by the image of the dharma wheel mandala, emphasises the complementarity or juxtaposition of the artworks and showcases that the impact of an artwork is not proportional to its size and dimensions. The invited Indian artists, renowned or emerging, (re)present the mutations of an art scene that never ceases to grow and expand, to change, to shift, always expressive and animated, both strong and fragile; at the same time an active particle and a powerful component of the world of contemporary art. The workshop is located in the heart of the “Shouf” mountains in Ain Zhalta, at Alia’s residence for artists. Many techniques of engraving are available: Woodcut, linocut, carborundum, monotype, etching etc... The process of etching involves engraving a plate that is designed by the artist; ink is applied on the engraved plate and then carefully wiped clean, leaving only the ink held in the lines. Then both paper and plate go through a press. When the paper is peeled off the plate, it reveals a faithful mirror image of the etched drawing. This inking procedure is then repeated for each print giving a unique character to each piece. A limited number of prints is made, signed and numbered by the artist. The primary role of “Zaarura Edition” is to promote artists by offering art lovers the opportunity to collect limitededition engravings. 123 Guacolda, 2014 Etching and aquatint 40 x 30 cm Diana Itawi, 2014 Etching 20 x 25 cm Fantine Samaha, 2013 Etching 25 x 20 cm Michel Pelloille, 2014 Carborundum on Plexiglas 40 x 30 cm Mazen Kerbaj, 2013 Etching 40 x 30 cm Monique Chebli Rizkallah, 2013 Etching and aquatint 25 x 20 cm Rafic Majzoub, 2013 Etching 25 x 20 cm Elena Monzo, Texas, 2014 Monotype 70 x 50 cm 124 BEIRUT ART FAIR | CATALOGUE | 2014 Chris Anthem, Untitled, 2013 Etching 40 x 25 cm 125 VIDEO PROJECTS BODY POLITICS by SILKE SCHMICKL LUCKY KUSWANDI KATIA KAMELI FERHAT ÖZGÜR ZOULIKHA BOUABDELLAH SARNATH BANERJEE LARISSA SANSOUR TAYSIR BATNIJI TAN CHUI MUI HALIDA BOUGHRIET SOOKOON ANG BARBARA HLALI WAHEEDA MALLULAH SHIRIN ABU SHAQRA 126 KHALED HAFEZ BEIRUT ART FAIR | CATALOGUE | 2014 SULEIMAN BROTHERS MONIRA AL QADIRI 127 1 Lucky Kuswandi Indonesia / Black Cherry / 2005 / 5 min / Courtesy of the artist A woman finds herself confronted by her own image: who is she, and what makes her a woman? As she finds a black cherry that seduces her, she is forced to explore and to finally take full control of her own body. Her desire is aroused by an apparently insignificant fruit. 2 Algeria-France / Nouba / 2000 / 5 min / Courtesy of the artist A traditional wedding scene behind a music video aesthetic that puts into play a potential tragedy. The film transpires in a far away and exotic reality, alienated by a dislocated soundtrack. 1 3 Ferhat Özgür Turkey / A young girl is growing up / 2009 / 5 min 27 / Courtesy of the artist The mother is getting ready to iron. Enter the daughter who places her hair onto the ironing board so that the mother can start straightening it. The mother is taking care of her daughter’s hair, a part of the body considered as extremely sensuous within the Muslim culture. These scenes symbolize traditions that maintain the system through the shaping of the young by the old. Although attentive the mother is controlling her daughter’s body. The face of the daughter is not shown, her emotions remains hidden behind the mass of hair that protects her like an opaque veil. Silke Schmickl 2 Katia Kameli 3 4 Zoulikha Bouabdellah France-Algeria / Dansons / 2003 / 5 min / Courtesy of the artist Zoulikha Bouabdellah’s brilliantly concise Dansons shows in a single take the midriff of a woman belly-dancing to La Marseillaise. It is a startlingly clear image of the clash of colonialism with indigenous culture. The military relentlessness of the anthem is in deep contrast to the sensuousness of the body wrapped in the colours of the French tricolour. 4 128 BEIRUT ART FAIR | CATALOGUE | 2014 There is a camera. And a body. Both in motion, meeting and observing each other, reflecting on each other’s capacity to produce forms and consequently a visual idea. Synchronisation, then desynchronisation, frictions appear that reflect the state of a world that is characterized by tensions, obsolete systems and preconceived opinions. Body Politics is a programme consisting of 16 art films from the Middle East, North Africa, South and South East Asia that explores how contemporary artists comment on current political and social issues by means of their own bodies or those of others. Ranging from video art to experimental cinema, documentaries and performative experiences the selection highlights how the individual can react to the bigger and rigid body of our globalized societies by exploding conventional production modes and viewing patterns. Through personal, ironic and poetic approaches the artists invent a new visual language and take us on a colourful cinematic journey that reintroduces a notion of humanity. 129 Sarnath Banerjee 9 India / Sophistication / 2009-2010 / 5 min / Courtesy of the artist Sophistication is a collage animation based on real images and drawings by Sarnath Banerjee. The video ironises humanity’s insatiable lust for power and its fanatical political and religious excesses from Europe to Asia. 7 Larissa Sansour Palestine-Denmark / A Space Exodus / 2009 / 5 min 24 / Courtesy of the artist 10 10 5 11 Barbara Hlali Germany / Revolution contra Revolution / 2009 / 3 min 56 / Courtesy of the artist Barbara Hlali’s performance Revolution Contra Revolution stages an emotionally distressed figure violently throwing himself against a wall with great force. The video presents an abstract form of the engagement with the possible effect of protest and politically motivated action: however, the intended goal turns into its opposite. 11 Tan Chui Mui 12 6 One Future is an edgy and powerful science fiction story of a society where everything is perfect, except no one is allowed to speak. 12 130 Exorcise Me is a photography, videography and live performance project addressing coming-of-age anxiety, teenage alienation and the confusing phase between childhood and adulthood. The title, Exorcize Me speaks about the unease within one’s own skin and the yearning to get rid of new-fangled fears and unfamiliar emotions. The goth makeup, baby language, school setting and uniforms are juxtapositions of reality and fiction, interior world brought out to the exterior. Palestine-France / Transit / 2004 / 6 min 32 / Courtesy of the artist Malaysia / One Future / 2009 / 4 min 32 / Courtesy of the artist and Redbag Music Sookoon Ang Singapore / Exorcize Me / 2013 / 3 min 13 / Courtesy of the artist Taysir Batniji Transit tackles the issues of borders. Taysir Batniji presents a silent slideshow, made up of photographic images, that he made clandestinely at border passages between Egypt and Gaza. The photographs of people waiting are alternated with black screens – metaphors for emptiness and the passing of time –, reflecting the difficult and often impossible conditions of mobility for today’s Palestinians. The video addresses notions of travel and displacement as well as the situation of being between two cultures and identities. 8 9 France-Algeria / Les illuminés / 2007 / 1 min 27 / Courtesy of the artist In Les illuminés (The Enlightened), the viewer’s focus is fused with that of a woman wearing a burqa, the video artist herself. The viewer sees the world – the astounded passersby she encounters on a moving pavement inside the Montparnasse train station in Paris – through her eyes, her obstructed vision. The video offers a radical experience of otherness and isolation and demonstrates that apart from being symbolic, the covering of women is first and foremost of a material nature. A Space Exodus quirkily sets up an adapted stretch of Stanley Kubrick’s Space Odyssey in a Middle Eastern political context. The film follows the artist herself onto a phantasmagoric journey through the universe echoing Kubrick’s thematic concerns for human evolution, progress and technology. It offers a naively hopeful and optimistic vision for a Palestinian future contrasting sharply with the actual situation of the Palestinian state. In A Space Exodus, Sansour does finally reach the moon, although her contact with Palestine’s capital is cut off. 8 7 6 Halida Boughriet Suleiman Brothers Malaysia / Rojak! / 2009 / 4 min 42 / Courtesy of the artist and Redbag Music A Rojak seller’s take on Malaysia’s multi-faceted social political tapestry. Made entirely with CGI special effects the video is visually stunning. BEIRUT ART FAIR | CATALOGUE | 2014 5 131 13 Monira Al Qadiri 15 Kuwait / Oh torment (Wa waila) / 2008 / 10 min / Courtesy of the artist Oh Torment (Wa Waila) is a surreal film based on an old melancholic Kuwaiti folk song, whose words evoke a trance of sadness. Monira al Qadiri used this aesthetic as a metaphor for her film, interpreting it as a vehicle for personal grief: the film depicts love lost, displacement, gender identity and death in an extremely visual yet absurd manner. The artist personally played the main male ‘singer’, and all the roles of men and women are swapped in the film. 13 14 Egypt / The A77A Project (On Superheroes and Presidents) / 2009 / 4 min / Courtesy of the artist This short, ironic film reflects on recent social changes in an African megacity: Cairo. Two figures drawn from a large-scale canvas by the artist are cast in motion via 3D animation and morph into the ancient god Anubis. The Lord of the Afterlife walks through the streets of presentday Cairo, past scenes of daily life, in what was once described as “one of the most beautiful downtowns in the world.” The film’s score is a mix of sounds drawn from cyberspace and archival voice recordings: re-worked open-source digital loops and samples of Egyptian president Nasser delivering his famous 1967 resignation speech. Waheeda Mallulah Bahrain / Coloured Photographs / 2008 / 1 min 40 / Courtesy of the artist Waheeda Malullah presents desires for liberty through a stop-motion animation. A group of women posing in front of the camera, alluding to a black and white photograph, turns color when primaries start overtaking black conservatism. The artist presents a playful approach to social values; restrictions and freedoms, aspirations and their inadequacies. Khaled Hafez 16 Shirin Abu Shaqra Lebanon / Sulayma / 2014 / Courtesy of the artist “Sulayma” is a musical jewel worth revisiting. The song, is based on a romantic monologue describing the laments of a person being betrayed by the beloved one. Here, I chose to liberate these poetic images from their immediate meaning and elevate them to a more dynamic one. Salma becomes a diva that has been betrayed by herself and by the irreversible element of time. She does not recognize her old self in the miror, and awaits death. An old woman looking back at her glamorous young years expresses “saudade”. A young one dreading her old days, there lies the conflict. 15 16 132 BEIRUT ART FAIR | CATALOGUE | 2014 14 133 BLC BANK DESIGN PLATFORM BEIRUT ART FAIR | CATALOGUE | 2014 KHALED EL MAYS CARLO MASSOUD SANDRA MACARON 134 135 It was the Lebanese architect Youssef Thohmé who once eloquently affirmed that it was the artists, and particularly the builders and designers of our time who are once again assuming the roles of social commentators. In a country where communities at once mingle and clash, history is something of a heavy burden for its people. Whoever attempts to write it faces inciting conflict: opposing memories are pitted against one another, and create a divergent pattern of events. It is the job of the artist, therefore, to find a means of allowing each side to approach and understand the other. Khaled El Mays Creativity espouses a way of thinking that transcends common politics, not only providing a means of envisioning the future, but of imagining the past, rendering it acceptable, even appealing to everyone. Designers, whose work is now a great source of worldwide interest, are not exempt from Damocles’ assertion that with power comes responsibility. As they twist their iron, weld their metals, hammer, melt, saw, cast, crush and stitch, they are at the helm of creating a new country, infusing it with new blood, and forging a new destiny for it. It is for this reason that every item crafted by Lebanese artists is meaningful, its ostensible message as valuable as its hidden one. Renni Mackintosh-esque, yet reminiscent of the Middle East, his designs espouse the organic and natural, with an interplay of colors, topped with a hint of masochism. Cutting-edge design? To reduce a work to mere politics would be a heresy, as would a denial of its importance. Far from veering into the realms of the superfluous, the very design of a table can be the portent of a brandished sword or an outstretched hand. How many discussions, how many arguments will take place over this table? Designers do not simply create objects; their hands preside over the simmering tensions of this world. Dolls and breasts in the form of artillery shells or missiles? An alluring enigma that captivates your attention. Flirting with daintiness and the burden of guilt, a cage is a symbol of entrapment as well as a promise; a delicate, volatile and poetic design, bringing together calm and disquiet.
