Vertika Winter 2016 - American Helicopter Museum
american helicopter museum & education center www.americanhelicopter.museum | 610.436.9600 WINTER 2016 ANNUAL REPORT we PRESERVE we EDUCATE we INSPIRE 1 Chairman’s Message O N OCTOBER 18, 1996 THE AMERICAN HELICOPTER MUSEUM AND EDUCATION CENTER (AHMEC) OPENED ITS DOORS TO THE PUBLIC. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the museum, and it promises to be a significant period in AHMEC’s history. The Fall Vertika described our expansion plans, and the project is now becoming a reality. Our long time tenant, ONExia, has fully vacated their half of the building and we have begun moving into a portion of the available space. The details of the expansion project have evolved and the library is now occupying the two classrooms formerly used by ONExia. We are currently removing the paint booth to make room for the theater and demolishing the mezzanine above the old restoration area to make room for additional exhibit space. Restoration will now be in a portion of the high bay area on the other side of the building with more room to restore and maintain our rotorcraft. Following this work the old “theater” will become two classrooms and the toddler area will move into the vacated library room. The project allows us to offer expanded educational offerings and more options for corporate and event rentals, and we will have the ability to open 7 days a week. Before discussing more of our plans for 2016, I want to take a look back at the successes of 2015. In early June we held our annual Gala with the theme of Back to the Future. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, drinks and dinner, music and dancing, a silent and live auction and presentation of the AHMEC Achievement Award to Jeff Bezos and Amazon Prime. A special feature of the evening was the arrival of Marty McFly and Doc Brown in a Delorean. June also meant FatherFest, which again drew large crowds to the museum for an open house, antique car show and helicopter rides. A major addition in 2015 was a drone exhibition that wowed the audience with aerobatics and precision flying. A Member/Donor recognition event saw the formal unveiling of our two newest helicopters: the Sikorsky H-34 donated by the Air and Space Museum, and a CH-46 Sea Knight. We also have initiated a pilot program for our interactive audio guides. Our education programs added an exciting component to the offerings that already have received well-deserved recognition. The established Women in Aerospace and Technology (WATP) Program, presented in partnership with the Girl Scouts, area educational institutions and local businesses, has 65 young women enrolled. As a result of the acclaim our existing programs have received, the West Chester Area School District (WCASD) asked us to present a course on blade design to their 7th grade technical education classes. It has proven to be so popular that it will be expanded to more schools in the WCASD and potentially additional school districts. 2 www.americanhelicopter.museum | 610.436.9600 Our two signature events will continue in 2016. On April 30 the Gala will celebrate MASH Officers Ball with all the same features of the previous successful galas. Come and enjoy excellent food, music and the silent and live auctions. June 19 brings us FatherFest which will once more feature an exciting drone exhibition, antique car show and helicopter rides. The availability of additional space as a result of our expansion and a generous grant from the Davenport Foundation means we will be adding a major new exhibit. Pioneer Hall will honor the people who laid the foundation for the Rotorcraft industry, such as Igor Sikorsky, Frank Piasecki, and Arthur Young. This will be much more than a look back at our history. It will include an interactive area that allows visitors of all ages to try their hands at innovation based on the challenges these early pioneers faced and the creative process they demonstrated. Covering the span of rotary wing development from the beginning to the present day, the Pioneer Hall exhibit will also feature a modern day pioneering effort: the AeroVelo Atlas, the winner of the AHS Igor Sikorsky Challenge and recipient of the $250,000 prize for Human Powered Helicopter. The flight simulator built by students from Lehigh University will go into service in 2016. This will be a challenging year financially with the loss of our rental income. AHMEC is seeking a tenant for the remaining office space and high bay area that we will not be occupying. We have plans to secure additional event bookings, expand our admissions and offer more educational programs to also generate new revenue. To make these a reality we will continue to rely on our dedicated volunteers, and hope you will join us as we enter a new era in the life of the American Helicopter Museum and Education Center. Hope to see you at the museum.
