Many of its alumni have distinguished themselves in the field of social work through the establishment of vibrant, reputed training institutions. Nearly 65 % of India’s population is under 35 years of age. Three-fourths of our people still reside in villages. This constitutes a challenge as well as an opportunity. For, unemployment amongst rural youth is estimated close to 20%, 30% of the total population lives below the poverty line, and a rapidly growing urban middle class coupled with near universal reach of TV channels has resulted in a quantum leap in aspirations leading to mindless and avoidable movement of unemployed youth to urban area in quest of jobs. Accordingly the focus of VYK has in recent years widened to taking up field level programmes in remote and backward regions in partnership with regional /local NGOs designed to [a] carry the fruits of agricultural research to the farmer’s doorsteps, [b] develop entrepreneurship in agro based industries , [c] catalyse vocational training for jobs as well self-employment – increasingly in IT-enabled services. At the same time it has been decided to extend the citizenship building programmes such as those relating to the use of RTI, Panchayati Raj management, disaster management, water management, to the states so as to amplify our reach. We are also in the process of instituting a systematic and credible feedback, monitoring and quality control mechanism along with a process of sharing success stories and learning experiences via the web as well as periodical workshops. It bears repetition that VYK, being a unit of the Indian Youth Centres Trust which is a registered charitable trust, undertakes its entire gamut of activities on a charitable /non-profit basis. I wish the VYK team a productive 2015-2016. Page 1 Rajat Narain Chairman A Message from the Managing Trustee To foster economic and social development of the nation, youth need to be equipped with knowledge and skills, especially in the areas of vocational training and entrepreneurship. In the present scenario in our country, on one side there is acute paucity of training programmes to help youth to develop cognitive intelligence, on the other side youth are increasingly becoming restless to find solutions to the prevalent problems of poverty and other social issues. In this context, the need to have specifically designed training programmes is imperative to orient the youth to developmental process and foster in them sensitivity towards problems in the society. Vishwa Yuvak Kendra (VYK) has been regularly organizing such training programmes in its campus at Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, since its inception in 1961. During the past year, training programmes on Fund Raising, Leadership, NGO Management and Panchayati Raj were organised by VYK in its campus. The programmes were attended by development practitioners from all over India. Recognizing the importance of having skill-based training for youth and realizing that larger participation can be ensured by organizing programmes locally, VYK implemented skill development and vocational training project in four states – Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Odisha – in collaboration with partner organizations, and has trained rural unemployed youth in various trades. What has been heartening to note is that in these training projects more than 50 percent of the participants were women. To make Vishwa Yuvak Kendra a model and vibrant Youth Centre, various activities were started in the campus. To promote digital literacy, basic computer course was started in the campus in collaboration with NASSCOM Foundation, which got rousing response from youth. Sports, Yoga, Cultural and Spoken English Programmes also catered to the learning needs of underprivileged youth. I am sure that the various programmes of VYK will help youth to develop cognitive, moral and social intelligence and would bring a positive change in their lives as well as in the society. I wish all the success to VYK team in making the programmes participatory and youth oriented, based on a renewed, innovative approach. OUR Facilities Envisaging the need to have a centrally located meeting place for youth from all across the world, the Indian Youth Centres Trust decided to build a youth centre, in 1960. Although the building plans were drawn up in 1962, the India-China conflict which engulfed the sub-continent in October of that year caused unexpected delay in starting the construction of the building. The IndiaPakistan war of 1965 caused some more delay. It was decided to proceed with the construction of the building in two stages. The first phase of Vishwa Yuvak Kendra building, comprising mainly the hostel and the central hall was completed and inaugurated on 22nd December 1968 by Dr. Zakir Husain, the then President of India. Front Lawn Side Lawn Page 17 Ensconced in the highly secure diplomatic enclave of New Delhi, Vishwa Yuvak Kendra is a full-fledged campus within itself, and comprises of accommodation facilities, conference/ seminar facilities, cafeteria, library, lush lawns etc. The campus also has space for showcasing artwork/ craft exhibits.
