A Message from the
Chairman
Vishwa Yuvak Kendra [VYK] was conceived as a model centre for orienting the nation’s youth as
aware and responsible citizens equipped with the requisite concepts and leadership qualities in
the task of nation building and as agents of socio-economic transformation. Many of its alumni
have distinguished themselves in the field of social work through the establishment of vibrant,
reputed training institutions.
Nearly 65 % of India’s population is under 35 years of age. Three-fourths of our people still reside
in villages. This constitutes a challenge as well as an opportunity. For, unemployment amongst
rural youth is estimated close to 20%, 30% of the total population lives below the poverty line,
and a rapidly growing urban middle class coupled with near universal reach of TV channels
has resulted in a quantum leap in aspirations leading to mindless and avoidable movement of
unemployed youth to urban area in quest of jobs.
Accordingly the focus of VYK has in recent years widened to taking up field level programmes in
remote and backward regions in partnership with regional /local NGOs designed to [a] carry the
fruits of agricultural research to the farmer’s doorsteps, [b] develop entrepreneurship in agro
based industries , [c] catalyse vocational training for jobs as well self-employment – increasingly
in IT-enabled services.
At the same time it has been decided to extend the citizenship building programmes such as
those relating to the use of RTI, Panchayati Raj management, disaster management, water
management, to the states so as to amplify our reach.
We are also in the process of instituting a systematic and credible feedback, monitoring
and quality control mechanism along with a process of sharing success stories and learning
experiences via the web as well as periodical workshops.
It bears repetition that VYK, being a unit of the Indian Youth Centres Trust which is a registered
charitable trust, undertakes its entire gamut of activities on a charitable /non-profit basis.
I wish the VYK team a productive 2015-2016.

A Message from the
Managing Trustee
To foster economic and social development of the nation, youth need to be equipped with
knowledge and skills, especially in the areas of vocational training and entrepreneurship. In the
present scenario in our country, on one side there is acute paucity of training programmes to
help youth to develop cognitive intelligence, on the other side youth are increasingly becoming
restless to find solutions to the prevalent problems of poverty and other social issues. In this
context, the need to have specifically designed training programmes is imperative to orient the
youth to developmental process and foster in them sensitivity towards problems in the society.
Vishwa Yuvak Kendra (VYK) has been regularly organizing such training programmes in its
campus at Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, since its inception in 1961. During the past year, training
programmes on Fund Raising, Leadership, NGO Management and Panchayati Raj were organised
by VYK in its campus. The programmes were attended by development practitioners from all
over India.
Recognizing the importance of having skill-based training for youth and realizing that larger
participation can be ensured by organizing programmes locally, VYK implemented skill
development and vocational training project in four states – Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh,
Rajasthan and Odisha – in collaboration with partner organizations, and has trained rural
unemployed youth in various trades. What has been heartening to note is that in these training
projects more than 50 percent of the participants were women.
To make Vishwa Yuvak Kendra a model and vibrant Youth Centre, various activities were started
in the campus. To promote digital literacy, basic computer course was started in the campus in
collaboration with NASSCOM Foundation, which got rousing response from youth. Sports, Yoga,
Cultural and Spoken English Programmes also catered to the learning needs of underprivileged
youth.
I am sure that the various programmes of VYK will help youth to develop cognitive, moral and
social intelligence and would bring a positive change in their lives as well as in the society.
I wish all the success to VYK team in making the programmes participatory and youth oriented,
based on a renewed, innovative approach.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT AND VOCATIONAL
TRAINING PROJECT
To enable marginalized rural youth to acquire knowledge and skills for gainful jobs or productive self-employment ,
Vishwa Yuvak Kendra widened its gambit of activities to include Skill Development and Vocational Training Programme
(SDVT), in four states – Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Odisha. The SDVT project was started in 2013-14
and continued in 2014-15. In two years, more than 2000 youth were trained in 25 trades in collaboration with partner
NGOs and regional training centres. The exposure that these youth got in entrepreneurship and skill development gave
them the opportunity to exercise their creative freedom and developed in them greater sense of control over their own
lives. Here we are sharing two success stories:
Voice of Successful Entrepreneurs
Sunita, 35, represented Grameen Vikas Evam
Paryavarn Sansthan, Village, Basad Baroda, Dist,
Dausa, Rajasthan, talked about the training she
got in carpet weaving. She shared her wonderful
experience and was overwhelmed during
Entrepreneurs’ Meet at VYK, on 26 March 2015.
The training in weaving has transformed Sunita’s
life. The motivation and skill she got during
the training made her commercially viable
entrepreneur. With her commitment and skill
her life is moving smoothly. She completes her
household work early and starts carpet weaving
by 9 am to 3.00 pm at her own loom which is set
up at her home.
Ms. Sunita, an entrepreneur from Rajasthan sharing her success
story with enthusiasm and excitement during the Entrepreneurs’
Meet.
She has become much confident for her family’s
better future and planned to invest her savings in
the education of her five children.
Sachin, 32, (second from right) from village
Dable-Chauki, represented Indian Institute of
Social Development (IISD), Indore, displayed
his creation-motor winding machine, during
Entrepreneurs’ Meet at VYK, on 26 March 2015.

“I could never have explored the potential in me if I
had not got the opportunity of joining the training
course in Electrical equipments, organized by VYK
and which was equally supported by IISD,” said
Sachin.

own creation. Mr. Jai Jai Ram Singh, Founder, JJRS Pvt Ltd., Mr.
Suneel Keshwani, motivational speaker, Mr. Rajeev Nirmal and
Mr. Gopal Sharma keenly observing the motor winding machine.
Training provided by VYK in collaboration with
various organizations proved a boon to many
unemployed youth, who were without aim like
Sachin, with a sense of despair but could bring
successful hues in their life after acquiring skills
in various trades.
Training OF NGO representatives in States
As an extension of the inhouse programmes held at VYK , three short- term state level courses were organized by VYK
at Karnataka, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh, in November-December 2014, with the objective of enhancing the capacity of
young grass-roots workers. Training Programme on NGO Management held collaboration with the Indian Foundation
for Global Peace Education (IFGPE), Bangalore saw the participation of 40 participants from different NGOs of South
Zone. A Training-cum-Convention on Panchayati Raj was organized in conjunction with the Centre for Youth and Social

OUR Facilities
Envisaging the need to have a centrally located
meeting place for youth from all across the world,
the Indian Youth Centres Trust decided to build a
youth centre, in 1960. Although the building plans
were drawn up in 1962, the India-China conflict
which engulfed the sub-continent in October of
that year caused unexpected delay in starting
the construction of the building. The IndiaPakistan war of 1965 caused some more delay.
It was decided to proceed with the construction
of the building in two stages. The first phase of
Vishwa Yuvak Kendra building, comprising mainly
the hostel and the central hall was completed
and inaugurated on 22nd December 1968 by
Dr. Zakir Husain, the then President of India.

Page 17
Ensconced in the highly secure diplomatic
enclave of New Delhi, Vishwa Yuvak Kendra is a
full-fledged campus within itself, and comprises
of accommodation facilities, conference/ seminar
facilities, cafeteria, library, lush lawns etc. The
campus also has space for showcasing artwork/
craft exhibits.
ACCOMODATION, DINING HALL AND YOUTH CAFÉ
ACCOMODATION
In keeping with its mandate, Vishwa
Yuvak Kendra extends capacious
accommodation amenities with modern
conveniences to the trainees, students
and NGO partners from within and
outside the country. The centrally located
Kendra hostel has 38 well furnished and
spacious rooms with great views. Our
rooms are simple yet have the basic
modern amenities like air-conditioning,
tea/coffee maker, satellite television etc.
The newly constructed Annexe building
has 115 dormitory beds (4-5 beds in a
room) which is mostly availed by youth
groups/young students, NGOs etc. The
dormitory accommodation provides
a viable, inexpensive accommodation
option for NGO representatives and
youth workers who are often on a limited
budget. Complimentary breakfast is
served to all the trainees/members
staying in the campus. Being located in
the safest neighborhood in the capital
region and having excellent commuting
facilities to all transport hubs (airport,
railway station, bus terminal) makes VYK
one of the favorite staying options of the
youth from across the country and from
outside India.
ROOMS AND DORMITORY
The VYK campus serves as a nucleus
for the promotion of national harmony
and international understanding in an
ambience of warmth and friendship.

to pass time, individually and in small
groups. Like all its other facilities, the
Dining Hall and Youth Café can be used
only by individual/institutional members
of Vishwa Yuvak Kendra.
AUDITORIUM AND CONFERENCE HALLS
