Archdiocese of Winnipeg 13
Most Reverend V. James Weisgerber, Ph.L., S.T.L., D.D. Archbishop of Winnipeg James Weisgerber was born on May 1, 1938 in Vibank, Saskatchewan. Following his schooling at Vibank, he attended St. Peter’s College at Muenster and then St. Paul’s University in Ottawa where he obtained degrees in philosophy and theology. He was ordained a priest at Holy Rosary Cathedral in Regina on June 1, 1963 and named a Monsignor (Prelate of Honour) on October 16, 1991. Archbishop Weisgerber was Dean of Arts at Notre Dame College in Wilcox, Saskatchewan where he taught philosophy, religious studies and French. He worked several years in the Regina Archbishop’s Office serving as the director of the pastoral and social justice offices. He served as Rector of Holy Rosary Cathedral and Pastor of Holy Trinity Parish, both in Regina, as well as Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Fort Qu’Appelle, which included the pastoral ministry in the neighboring First Nations’ reserves. In 1990 he was elected General Secretary of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, a position he held until his ordination as the Bishop of Saskatoon. He was appointed the fifth Bishop of Saskatoon by His Holiness, Pope John Paul II on March 7, 1996. He was named the sixth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Winnipeg by Pope John Paul II on June 7, 2000. He was installed on August 24, 2000 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Archbishop Weisgerber served the CCCB in several capacities: Permanent Council, Chair of Social Affairs Commission, Treasurer, Vice President and President (2007-2009). He was a member of the Roman Catholic Methodist International Dialogue from 20022007. He served as President of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Manitoba. Archbishop Weisgerber was awarded the Notre Dame Medal of Honour in 1994 and the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 2005. In 2010 Archbishop Weisgerber received the Caritas Award from the Catholic Foundation of Manitoba. On November 7, 2010, Archbishop Weisgerber received an Honorary Doctorate from St. John’s College at the University of Manitoba. On May 29, 2013, the Archbishop was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws degree from the University of Manitoba. 1 Archbishop Weisgerber’s Coat of Arms The Archbishop’s personal coat of arms is impaled with the Archdiocesan coat of arms to indicate his office as Archbishop of Winnipeg. On the left is the Archdiocesan coat of arms (described on page 6). On the right is Archbishop Weisgerber’s coat of arms. The background is green symbolizing both the liturgical colour of hope and the prairies. The blue and white waves indicate the living waters and the sending of the Spirit. The sheaf of wheat symbolizes his home province of Saskatchewan. The swords speak of St. Paul, patron of the Archbishop’s home parish of St. Paul in Vibank, Saskatchewan, where he grew up. The eagle, an ancient symbol of St. John, recalls that we are to be disciples. The eagle is also a sacred bird to the First Nations peoples who were the original inhabitants of the prairies. Relating to the bishop’s own family, the eagle is part of the Imperial crests of Germany and Russia, reminding us of the Archbishop’s ancestors, who originated in Germany, but lived in Russia before coming as pioneers to Saskatchewan. 2 Former Archbishops First Archbishop Most Reverend Alfred A. In this church, the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church of Christ truly exists and functions. The Archdiocese of Winnipeg was erected on December 4, 1915. It comprises that portion of the Province of Manitoba lying south of the line dividing Townships 44 and 45 and west of Lake Winnipeg and the Red River, except the territory south of the line dividing Townships 9 and 10 and east of the Meridian between the 13th and 14th Ranges west of the principal Meridian. 4 The Archdiocesan Coat of Arms The Archbishop of Winnipeg, the Chief Pastor, is symbolized by the mitre, a bishop’s liturgical headdress. The wide stripes are in the shape of the junction of the Assiniboine and Red Rivers at Winnipeg as they join to form a single stream flowing north. The fortification commemorates Fort Rouge established on the very site of Winnipeg by the first European explorer of this territory, La Verendrye. The branch of three maple leaves expresses the multicultural dimension of the diocesan church. One lily represents the Blessed Virgin under the title of the Most Holy Name of Mary, the titular of the Cathedral. The other lily is for St. Joseph, the Foster Father of Our Lord and the principal patron of the Archdiocese and of the City of Winnipeg. Heavenly Patron The patron of the Archdiocese of Winnipeg is St. Joseph.
