What it takes
to be No. 1
by Vince Lombardi
You’ve got to pay the price.
Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all the time
thing. You don’t win once in a while; you don’t do
things right once in a while; you do them right all the
time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
There is no room for second place. There is only one
place in my game, and that’s first place. I have finished
second twice in my time at Green Bay, and I don’t ever
want to finish second again. There is a second place
bowl game, but it is a game for losers played by losers.
It is and always has been an American zeal to be first
in anything we do, and to win, and to win, and to win.
Every time a football player goes to play his trade he’s
got to play from the ground up-from the soles of his
feet right up to his head. Every inch of him has to play.
Some guys play with their heads. That’s O.K. You’ve
got to be smart to be number one in any business.
But more importantly, you’ve got to play with your
heart, with every fiber of your body. If you’re lucky
enough to find a guy with a lot of head and a lot of
heart, he’s never going to come off the field second.
Running a football team is no different than
running any other kind of organization-an army, a
political party or a business. The principles are the
same. The object is to win-to beat the other guy.
Maybe that sounds hard or cruel. I don’t think it is.
It is a reality of life that men are competitive and the
most competitive games draw the most competitive
men. That’s why they are there-to compete. To know
the rules and objectives when they get in the game. The
object is to win fairly, squarely, by the rules-but to win.
And in truth, I’ve never known a man worth his
salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart,
didn’t appreciate the grind, the discipline. There
is something in good men that really yearns for
discipline and the harsh reality of head to head combat.
I don’t say these things because I believe in
the “brute” nature of man or that men must be
brutalized to be combative. I believe in God, and
I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe
that any man’s finest hour, the greatest fulfillment
of all that he holds dear, is that moment when
he has worked his heart out in a good cause and
lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

St. Joseph Regional Football seeks to take
grade school young men and teach them how to
develop pride in themselves, their team and
their school. Our athletes will fully understand
what it means to dedicate themselves to the
goals of the team. The goals of our coaches are
to develop leadership skills in each athlete,
teach our athletes to handle and overcome
adversity and most importantly begin each
season as a team and end as CHAMPIONS.
St. Joseph Regional Football fully understands
that we are a component of the ultimate
mission of St. Joseph Regional H.S.;
developing the "Vir Fidelis"
- The Faithful Man.

An era of SJR history ended on Monday, December 16, 2014
Tony Karcich, who began his storied career with the Green Knights in 1985, stepped down as head football
coach after 29 years, 388 wins and 20 state titles.
Karcich leaves as the winning-est coach in Bergen County history.
“Everybody wants to talk about the wins and losses,” says Karcich. “They have some meaning, but when all is
said and done, that’s just numbers. What this is all about is molding young boys into men. It’s what you’ve done with
all these kids, the impact you’ve had on their lives, that matters most. That’s what defines me, to do this job, you have
to enjoy working with kids,” said Karcich, who will remain at St. Joe’s as Athletic Director. “One of the things I
learned is that you never give up on a kid. They’ll test you. They’ll challenge you. But being a coach, in the end, is a
lot like being a parent. It’s all about love.”
For the Green Knights of Saint Joseph Regional High School, the most important moment in its football history
occurred back in February of 1985 when Brother Peter Russell, SJR’s fourth principal, wooed Tony Karcich away
from Wall Street and back onto the football field. And with his arrival, the history of SJR football became a tale of two
eras.
“Anyone who knows me well, knows that coaching is where I belong,” Coach Karcich said in 1985. “Working
on Wall Street, I was always looking over my shoulder, wondering if I had made the right decision to leave coaching.
I don’t think a day ever went by that I didn’t think about it. It’s obvious that St. Joe’s kids have the same kind of
proud, competitive spirit I’m used to. The facilities are excellent, and Brother Peter has a great track record in his
commitment to excellence. The chemistry is right, and it’s obviously the place for me to be.”
With those words, the Tony Karcich Era of SJR football began.
The late Eighties witnessed an unprecedented upsurge for SJR athletics as football, basketball, hockey, wrestling
and baseball all emerged, at various times, as state powerhouses. In developing a winning football program, Coach
Karcich also created a winning attitude here at St. Joe’s, a sense of pride and an expectation for excellence that has
been the foundation of our athletic program ever since.
In the twenty seasons from 1965 to 1984, the St. Joe’s football program compiled an overall record of 75-97-3.
In those two decades of competition, SJR teams had only seven winning seasons and two league titles. Take away
those winning seasons when the team went 36-9-2, and SJR had a 39-89-1 record for the other thirteen years.
Since 1985, the team’s record is an astonishing 266-56-2 (an .826 winning percentage) and includes seventeen
state titles. The team has been ranked #1 in New Jersey five times, and has received five Top Twenty-Five National
rankings from USA Today.
Since 1995, no team has played at the elevated heights of the Green Knights. The team has an unparalleled
record of 164-30-0 over that span, and has earned fifteen state titles, including seven in a row from 1999 through 2005
and five in the past six years. The team has been nationally ranked #1 in New Jersey five times (in 1995, 1997, 1999,
2012 and 2013), and has been nationally ranked by the USA Today five times as well (1995, 1997, 1999, 2004 and
2013).
“You have to do things the right way”. Tony has never lost sight of the fact that athletics are part of an
educational process by which a fourteen year old boy enters high school and leaves as an eighteen year old man. He
school and on the playing field, and then
has counseled his players constantly about “doing the right thing” in
modeled it for them in his own approach to life. In doing so, Tony has made a real and lasting difference in the lives
of the thousands of young men who have played for him, and among coaches and educators, there is truly no finer
legacy than that. Tony Karcich has been, and will forever remain, simply the best.
