Someone has said, “Change is inevitable, growth is intentional.”
In order for Church Street to CHANGE & to GROW; we must EMBRACE
“CHANGE” and we must be “INTENTIONAL” about our
EVANGELISM, MISSIONS, and OUTREACH!
In last month’s newsletter, I ended by mentioning that we must be: (1)
INTENTIONAL about OPENING the FRONT DOOR, (2) INTENTIONAL
about CLOSING the BACK DOOR; and, (3) INTENTIONAL about
OPENING the SIDE DOOR.
Let’s begin…LET US
(next page)
I.
II.
BE INTENTIONAL about OPENING the FRONT DOOR.
a. Be INTENTIONAL about having an updated church website that clearly indicates on the
front page the times of services of worship and the address of church. Some church researchers
suggest that around 90% of first-time guests visit the church’s website before visiting the actual
church.
b. Be INTENTIONAL about having services of worship that pay attention to guest
worshippers, by providing information as to where to go in the church to find sanctuary or
restrooms or classrooms, by greeting them as they arrive and providing a general welcome during
worship (but not by putting them on the spot), by giving personal ushering/escorting to seating
in the sanctuary, by assisting in giving specific instructions as to what to do at certain times and
where to find items in the bulletin (this is especially helpful to those who are first-time guests and
are unfamiliar to the regular protocol).
c. Be INTENTIONAL about the “too full problem,” “too empty problem,” “too cold
problem,” and “too absent problem.”
i. “ Too full problem” –when the seating in the sanctuary is 80% full, the church is full to
guests.
ii. “Too empty problem” –when there are few people and very low to no energy.
iii. “Too cold problem” –when the church is visibly unfriendly by not greeting and gravitating to
guests rather than greeting and gravitating to those we know and who are members or
regular attendees.
iv. “Too absent problem” –when members are attending and participating less frequently and
where the church’s expectations or less and low or none at all.
d. Be INTENTIONAL about inviting others. Each member of the church is responsible before
God to invite others to become a part of God’s family. Each member has a responsibility to
invite others. This is not just the pastor’s job, the church officers’ job, or the evangelism
committee’s job. Inviting is for everyone to do.
BE INTENTIONAL about CLOSING the BACK DOOR.
a. Be INTENTIONAL about getting guest worshippers to complete the guest registration
cards. The less requests that are made, the more likely guests are to complete and return the card.
One church announced that the church would give $5.00 to a local charity for every guest
registration card which was completed and returned with at least the first name and email address
provided, as one way to get cards completed.
b. Be INTENTIONAL about following up with guests worshippers. The appropriate followup depends upon the context. Sending an email the very next day after the guest attended church
is best, offering alternatives to additional contacts as the person(s) desire.
c. Be INTENTIONAL about assimilating new members into small groups of some kind.
When included in a small group, people are 5 times more likely to stay with the church than those
who only attend worship over a 5-year span.
d. Be INTENTIONAL about the providing the right entry point for guest worshippers who
are potential new members. Hold “New Member” and “Inquirer” classes as entry points for
potential new members, where information and expectations will be provided.
“Evangelism is not salesmanship It is not urging people, pressing them, coercing them, overwhelming them, or subduing them. Evangelism is
telling a message. Evangelism is reporting good news.” – Richard C. Halverson
“The greatest hindrances to the evangelization of the world are those within the church.” -John R. Mott
“Life is too short and hell is too hot to just play church.” Pastor Larry Osborne.
“Some wish to live within the sound of a chapel bell; I wish to run a rescue mission within a yard of hell.” — C.T. Studd
III.
BE INTENTIONAL about OPENING the SIDE DOOR.
a. Be INTENTIONAL about providing side doors that are easier entry points for potential new
members to participate, where there are events that are tied to the church without being held at
the church (activities that are not held at the physical address of the church). It helps those who
may initially find it difficult to come to the actual church building and grounds, to be able to
overcome some of their initial reluctances until they are more comfortable. (Examples: provide
a tent “water station” for a communitywide walk/race, provide a communitywide
musical/concert offsite).
Church Street, let’s try what we have not tried! Let’s strengthen what we are doing already! And above all, as
we seek to REACH and seek to RETAIN persons to become a part of the family of God at Church Street, let’s
above all…LOVE PEOPLE as a top priority, “not just in word only but in deed and in truth.”
Loving God and Loving Others!
Pastor Walker
“People who don't believe in missions have not read the New Testament. Right from the beginning Jesus said the field is the world. The early
church took Him at His word and went East, West, North and South.” -- J. Howard Edington

‘“EVANGELISM is the spontaneous overflow of a glad and free heart in Jesus Christ.” -Robert Munger

telling a message. Evangelism is reporting good news.” – Richard C. Halverson

April Birthstone
The diamond is more than just aesthetically
beautiful—it’s an enduring symbol of love,
romance, and commitment. The stone’s
name is derived from the Greek word
adamas,
which
translates
to
“unconquerable.” This symbolic meaning
lends itself well to the diamond’s historic
commemoration of eternal love.
The Sweet Pea with the botanic name of
Lathyrus odoratus is a native flower plant of
the eastern Mediterranean region from Sicily
to Crete. It is a climbing plant which can
grow up to 2 meters when there is support
available, like a wall or fence. The original
wild plant is purple in color, where as many
cultivators have created other colors.
Hence their name, Sweet Pea's have a sweet
fragrance and is used by many gardeners
just for the scent it gives off in their garden.
Sweet Pea's generally are in bloom from
March till November, and do best in cool
damp climates.
Fun and interesting fact: In the 1980's, in a
small town in England called Wem, the
Sweet Pea Society of Wem started an annual
festival celebrating this flower. Many of the
street signs now carry a picture of the Sweet
Pea, and a small area of town is referred to
Eckford Park after the nurseryman Henry
Eckford who cross-bred and developed the
Sweet Pea plant.

Giving All
Everyone knows that they have a specific
birthstone that is placed in jewelry and
trinkets to signify the month they were born
in. However, many people don't know that
just like the stones, each month has a flower
or two as well, which symbolizes birth. Here
is the history and meaning behind your birth
flower, the sweet pea.

During his only inaugural address as the US
President, John F. Kennedy issued this
challenge to Americans: “Ask not what
your country can do for you; ask what you
can do for your country.” It was a renewed
call for citizens to surrender their lives in
sacrifice and service to others. His words
especially inspired the sons and daughters of
men and women who had served their
country in war.
His meaning was clear: What their parents
purchased, often with their very lives, must
now be protected by peaceful means. An
army of volunteers arose to answer that call,
and through the decades they have
accomplished an immeasurable amount of
humanitarian work around the globe.
Submitted by Dr. Anders
Centuries earlier, the apostle Paul issued a
similar call to Christians in the opening
verses of Roman 12. Here he urges us to
give our bodies as “living sacrifices” in
service to the One who paid with His life for
our sins. This spiritual sacrifice must be
more than mere words; it must be an
investment of our lives in the physical,
emotional, and spiritual well-being of
others.
Best of all, our serving can be done right
where we are.

A Tribute to Mothers,
God's Best Creation
Reprint
Mothers are one of the best creations of
God. She has amazing powers. She can
multitask without complaining. She cares
for everyone without any demands. Read
here and marvel at the wonder called Mother.
By the time the Lord made mothers, he was
into his Sixth day of working overtime. An
Angel appeared and said, "Why are you
spending so much time on this one?"
And the Lord answered and said, "Have you
seen the special sheet on her? She has to be
completely washable, but not plastic, have
200 movable parts, all replaceable, run on
black coffee and leftovers, have a lap that
can hold three children at one time and that
disappears when she stands up, have a kiss
that can cure anything from a scraped knee
to a broken heart, and have six pairs of
hands."
The Angel was astounded at the
requirements for this one. "Six pairs of
hands! No Way!" said the Angel.
The Lord replied, "Oh, it's not the hands that
are the problem. It's the three pairs of eyes
that mothers must have!"
"And that's just on the standard model?" The
Angel asked.
The Lord nodded in agreement. "Yes, one
pair of eyes is to see through the closed door
as she asks her children what they are doing
even though she already knows. Another
pair in the back of her head is to see what
she needs to know even though no one
thinks she can. And the third pair is here in
the front of her head. They are for looking at
an errant child and saying that she
understands and loves him or her without
even saying a single word."
The Angel tried to stop the Lord. "This is
too much work for one day. Wait until
tomorrow to finish. "
But I can't!" The Lord protested, "I am so
close to finishing this creation that is so
close to my own heart. She already heals
herself when she is sick AND can feed a
family of six on a pound of rice and can get
a two year old to stand in the shower."
The Angel moved closer and touched the
woman, "But you have made her so soft,
Lord".
"She is soft", Lord agreed, "but I have also
made her tough. You have no idea what she
can endure or accomplish."
"Will she be able to think?" asked the
Angel.
The Lord replied, "Not only will she be able
to think, she will be able to reason and
negotiate."
The Angel then noticed something and
reached out and touched the woman's cheek.
"Oops, it looks like you have a leak with this
model. I told you that you were trying to put
too much into this one."
"That's not a leak." The Lord objected.
"That's a tear!"
"What's the tear for?" the Angel asked.
The Lord said, "The tear is her way of
expressing her joy, her sorrow, her pain, her
disappointment, her loneliness, her grief,
and her pride."
The Angel was impressed. "You are a
genius, Lord. You thought of everything, for
MOTHERS are truly amazing."
They have strengths that amaze men. They
carry children, they carry hardships, and
they carry burdens, but they hold happiness,
love and joy. They smile when they want to
scream. They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy and laugh
when they are nervous. They fight for what
they believe in. They stand up for injustice.
They don't take "no" for an answer when
they believe there is a better solution. They
go without new shoes so their children can
have them. They go to the doctor with a
frightened
friend.
They
love
unconditionally. They cry when their
children excel and cheer when their loved
ones get awards. They are happy when they
hear about a birth or a new marriage. They
are strong when they think there is no
strength left. They know that a hug and a
kiss can heal a broken heart. Mothers come
in all sizes, in all colors and shapes. They'll
drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you to show
how much they care about you. The heart of
a mother is what makes the world spin!
Mothers do more than just give birth. They
bring joy and hope. They give compassion
and ideals. They give moral support to their
family and friends. Mothers have a lot to say
and
a
lot
to
give.
Prayer is not a means of coercing God
to do what we want. It is a process of
recognizing His power and plan for
our lives. In prayer we yield our lives
and circumstances to the Lord and
trust Him to act in His time and His
way.
Always Pray and Don’t Give Up
Are you going through one of those
times when it seems every attempt to
resolve a problem is met with a new
difficulty? You thank the Lord at
night that it’s taken care of but awake
to find that something else has gone
wrong and the problem remains.
During an experience like that, I was
reading the gospel of Luke and was
astounded by the opening words of
chapter 18: “Then Jesus told his
disciples a parable to show them that
they should always pray and not give
up” (v.1). I had read the story of the
persistent widow many times but
never grasped why Jesus told it (vv.28). Now I connected those opening
words with the story. The lesson to
His followers was very clear:
“Always pray and never give up”
As we rely on God’s grace not only
for the outcome of our requests but
for the process as well, we can keep
coming to the Lord in prayer, trusting
His widsom and care for us.
Our Lord’s encouragement to us is
clear: Always pray and don’t give up!
-- David McCasland
Lord, in the difficulty I face today,
guard my heart, guide my words, and
show Your grace. May I always turn
to You in prayer.
Prayer changes everything.
National Health Observances April, 2016
More Evidence Preterm Birth
Could Raise Autism Risk
But researchers detect lower rate than previously
reported.
Autism Speaks, said it's not clear what to make of
the lower prevalence.
Studies differ in their methods, and some have
followed children for longer periods -- to age 8 and
beyond -- so it's hard to know which estimates are
closer to the truth, Wang said.
Instead, he saw the new findings as further support
for the overall picture. "Prematurity and low birth
weight are risk factors for autism," Wang said.
He also stressed, however, that there is no single
contributing factor to autism spectrum disorder -- a
developmental disorder thought to affect one in 68
children in the United States, according to the U.S.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
THURSDAY, Jan. 21, 2016 (HealthDay News) -According to a new study, very premature infants
may have an increased risk of being diagnosed with
autism by age 4, although the research questions
just how high the odds are.
The Australian study, published online Jan. 21 in
Pediatrics, found that just under 2 percent of tiny
preemies were later diagnosed with autism between
2 and 4 years of age.
Autism is complex, Wang said, and the mix of
causes varies from one child to the next. But in
general, experts believe it starts with a genetic
vulnerability, in combination with certain
environmental exposures at a critical point in
development -- particularly in the womb.
Researchers are still trying to understand the
environmental influences, Wang said.
That prevalence, the researchers say, is lower than
what's been seen in past studies -- where figures
have ranged from roughly 4 percent to 13 percent.
According to Autism Speaks, studies have
implicated a number of factors other than preterm
birth. Those include older age of the parents at
conception, as well as prenatal exposure to certain
infections, air pollution or particular medications -such as the anti-seizure drug valproic acid
(Depakote).
They also said there are reasons to trust the
reliability of their findings. This study is one of the
few to directly evaluate children, rather than using
parent questionnaires, said lead researcher Margo
Pritchard, a professor of neonatal nursing at
Australian Catholic University, in South Brisbane.
For the new study, Pritchard's team assessed 169
young children born before the 29th week of
pregnancy. They were screened at ages 2 and 4
years for possible signs of autism -- such as
language delays, or a lack of interest in other
children.
"What we found is that being born very preterm is a
risk factor, which is consistent with previous
studies," Pritchard said. "But when diagnostic rigor
is applied, using direct assessment, the rate of
autism is lower than reported in other studies."
Overall, 13 percent of the children screened
"positive" and underwent further evaluation. In the
end, just under 2 percent were diagnosed with
autism.
However, Dr. Paul Wang, senior vice president of
medical research for the nonprofit organization
Still, Wang pointed out, nearly all of the children
who screened positive but did not get a formal
diagnosis did have significant problems -- with
communication, imaginative play or repetitive
behavior, for example.
And since very preterm babies are at risk of various
developmental problems, it can be hard to
definitively diagnose autism at a young age, Wang
said.
Pritchard agreed that it's challenging to pinpoint
autism in those children. But, she added, "gold
standard" assessments such as the Autism
Diagnostic Observation Schedule -- which was used
in this study -- can help identify the disorder at an
early age.
Whatever the true prevalence of autism is among
preemies, it's important that these children have
routine developmental screenings, Wang and
Pritchard said.

Toni Braxton Discusses
Her
Son's
Autism
Diagnosis
April 14, 2015
"These children all need to be followed closely and
screened," Wang said. That way, any impairments - physical, mental or social -- can be caught early
and addressed.
"Identifying early differences in development can
help to link children with effective intervention
practices," Pritchard agreed.
"The take-home message," she added, "is to take
advantage of developmental monitoring and keep
children born very preterm on these programs
through childhood."

Toni Braxton, 7-time Grammy winner and star of the
reality series "Braxton Family Values," stopped by HLN to
discuss her new music and her involvement with Autism
Speaks during April, autism awareness month.
Braxton's son, Diezel, is 12 years old and has autism. Toni
credits an early diagnosis and the tools provided by Autism
Speaks, like the 100 Day Tool Kit, for helping him
develop.
"I remember the signs: like no eye contact, very little
communication, just little things and I said 'hmm.'"
After finding an ABA therapist who got him on the right
track, she also found Autism Speaks.
"Autism Speaks is the first organization that reached out to
me and said, 'Look. These are the tools that you need to get
your baby on the right track.'"
In her memoir, Toni wrote about feeling responsible for her
son's diagnosis, but she feels differently now.
"As a parent you always feel, was there something I could
have done differently. But what I've come to understand
through my friends at Autism Speaks, is there is nothing
wrong with our babies, and it's nothing you've done or you
could have done differently, it's just what the situation is."
The Good News About
Vibrant Health
What did the apostle John wish concerning
Gaius? “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in
all things and be in health, just as your soul
prospers.” 3 John 2.
What did God promise His people anciently?
“So you shall serve the Lord your God, and He will
bless your bread and your water. And I will take
sickness away from the midst of you.” Exodus
23:25.
Upon what conditions was freedom from disease
promised?” “If you diligently heed the voice of the
Lord your God and do what is right in His sight,
give ear to His commandments and keep all his
statues, I will put none of these diseases on you
which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am
the Lord who heals you.” Exodus 15:26.
Food Principles – Not Food Fads
What example did Daniel set in this matter?
“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not
define himself with the portion of the king’s
delicacies, nor with wine which he drank.” Daniel
1:8.
With what food did he ask to be provided?
“Please test your servants for ten days, and let them
give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. Daniel
1:12
What was the original diet prescribed for
humans? “And God said, ‘See, I have given you
every herb that yields seed which is on the face of
all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed,
to you it shall be for food.” Genesis 1:29
Why did the Lord restrict the Hebrews in their
diets? “For you are a holy people to the Lord your
God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people
for Himself, a special treasure above all the people
who are on the face of the earth. You shall not eat
any detestable thing.” Deuteronomy 14:2,3
What does the psalmist say the Lord does for His
people? “Who forgives all your iniquities, who
heals all your diseases.” Psalm 103:3.
What constituted a large part of Christ’s
ministry? “Who went about doing good and
healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for
God was with Him.” Acts 10:38. (See Luke 13:16)
“And Jesus went about all Galilee,….healing all
kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the
people.” Matthew 4:23
Note: Both mind and body are affected by
the food we eat.
Rest, Cheer and High Purpose
“A merry heart does good, like medicine, Proverbs
17:22
The Bible Speaks of Our Bodies
Why should the health of the body be preserved?
For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify
God in your body and in your spirit, which are
God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:20.
What is the body of the believer said to be? “Or
do you not know that your body is the temple of the
Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from
God, and you are not your own?” 1 Corinthians
6:19.
“And He said to him, ‘Come aside by yourselves to
a deserted place and rest a while.” Mark 6:31
“I beseech you…..that you present your bodies a
living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God” Romans
12:1.
“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever
you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians
10:31.

Ill-Fitting Boots
There was teacher who was helping one of her kindergarten students put his boots on. He asked
for help, and she could see why. With her pulling and him pushing, the boots still didn’t go on.
When the second boot was finally on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost whimpered when
the little boy said, “Teacher, they are on the wrong feet. She looked, and sure enough, they were.
It wasn’t any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her
cool as together they worked to get the boots back on--- this time on the right feet.
He then announced, “These are not my boots.” She bit her tongue rather than get right in his
face and scream, “Why didn’t you say so?” like she wanted to. Once again, she struggled to help
him pull the ill-fitting boots off.
He then said, “they are my brothers boots. My mom made me wear them. The teacher didn’t
know if she would laugh or cry. She mustered up the grace to wrestle the boots on his feet again.
She said, “now, where are your mittens?” He said, “I stuffed them in the toe of my boots.”

Write it Down
An 80 year old couple was worried because they kept forgetting thngs all the time. The doctor
assured them there was nothing seriously wrong except old age, and suggesed they carried a
notebook and write things down so they wouldn’t forget.
Several days later, the old man got up to go to the kitchen. His wife said, “Dear, get me a bowl
of ice cream while you are up.” “Okay,” he said…… and put some chocolate syrup on it and a
few cherries, too”, she added, “You’d better write all this down.” “I won’t foret,” he said.
Twenty minutes later, he came back into the room and handed his wife a plate of scrambled eggs
and bacon. She glared at him. “Now I told you to write it down! I knew you’d forget.” “What
did I forget?” She replied, “My toast!”
