Youth Services hrough The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, a world of exciting recreation opportunities is available to youth yearround. Young people have the chance to learn golf through The First Tee program, explore history by becoming a junior docent, try animation and digital photography, experience the great outdoors and clay target shooting by joining the Scholastic Youth Shooting Program, play numerous sports and develop healthy lifestyles. For those ages 10-17, the Xtreme Teens and Xtreme Pre-Teens programs offer an even broader world of engaging recreation opportunities for youth to be mentored by caring, responsible adults, meet new people who can become lifelong friends, learn new skills like swimming, computer construction or etiquette, and give back to their community through service learning projects and volunteerism. Xtreme Teens and Pre-Teens have opportunities for everyone to give back! T Last summer, M-NCPPC’s newly expanded Safe Summer late-night recreation program drew more than 41,000 visits by county teens and young adults at 25 facilities from June 22 to August 22. The total of 41,200 visits in nine weeks exceeded the Department of Parks and Recreation’s goal of 25,000 visits by 64 percent and made Safe Summer the largest provider of youth late-night recreation opportunities in Maryland, the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia. The program, which operated from 10 pm to midnight Monday through Saturday, provided young people ages 12 to 24 with safe places where they could hang out with friends, explore new recreational pursuits, and learn how to keep themselves and their communities safe. Because of the program’s overwhelming success in 2009, Safe Summer will be a part of the Department’s summer offerings again this year. Be on the lookout for details about Safe Summer 2010 coming in the next edition of this Guide! Give a Kid a Chance The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission has launched an exciting new initiative to give underprivileged and at-risk youth the opportunity to participate in enriching recreational programs. The “Give a Kid a Chance” scholarship fund’s mission is to ensure that all youth who are interested in trying out a new leisure pursuit or attending a camp will have the opportunity to pursue that passion despite financial barriers or hardships. There are many ways you can support “Give a Kid a Chance.” To find out how you can help, contact the Special Programs Division at 301-446-3400, TTY 301-446-3402 or visit www.pgxtremeteens.com.
