Gymnasiums, meeting rooms, kitchens, multipurpose
activity rooms, weight/fitness rooms and pre-school
rooms are some of the components found in the centers.
Outdoor amenities vary from site to site and include
combinations of play equipment, athletic fields, multipurpose courts, picnic areas, and trails. Community centers
are located in each of the three areas that make up the
county – the Northern Area, Central Area, and Southern
Area. (See adjacent list.) For information about a specific

Safe Summer:
The results are in!
Youth Services
hrough The Maryland-National Capital Park and
Planning Commission, a world of exciting
recreation opportunities is available to youth yearround. Young people have the chance to learn golf
through The First Tee program, explore history by
becoming a junior docent, try animation and digital
photography, experience the great outdoors and clay
target shooting by joining the Scholastic Youth
Shooting Program, play numerous sports and
develop healthy lifestyles.
For those ages 10-17, the Xtreme Teens and
Xtreme Pre-Teens programs offer an even broader
world of engaging recreation opportunities for youth
to be mentored by caring, responsible adults, meet
new people who can become lifelong friends, learn
new skills like swimming, computer construction or
etiquette, and give back to their community through
service learning projects and volunteerism. Xtreme
Teens and Pre-Teens have opportunities for
everyone to give back!
T
Last summer, M-NCPPC’s newly expanded Safe
Summer late-night recreation program drew more than
41,000 visits by county teens and young adults at 25
facilities from June 22 to August 22.
The total of 41,200 visits in nine weeks exceeded
the Department of Parks and Recreation’s goal of
25,000 visits by 64 percent and made Safe Summer
the largest provider of youth late-night recreation opportunities in Maryland, the District of Columbia and
Northern Virginia. The program, which operated from
10 pm to midnight Monday through Saturday, provided
young people ages 12 to 24 with safe places where they
could hang out with friends, explore new recreational
pursuits, and learn how to keep themselves and their
communities safe.
Because of the program’s overwhelming success in
2009, Safe Summer will be a part of the Department’s

Once a thriving plantation,
Montpelier is one of the finest
examples of 18th c. Georgian
architecture in Maryland. The
house was built c. 1783 by
Major Thomas Snowden
shortly after his marriage to
Ann Ridgely. Although limited
documentation is available
about daily operations, enslaved Africans and indentured
servants provided the labor as field hands and skilled craftsmen at the plantation and the Patuxent Ironworks. Montpelier
hosted many famous individuals, including George and
Martha Washington and Abigail Adams. Montpelier is fully restored and furnished as it might have been in 1830. The
grounds boast an original 18th c. summerhouse, one of only
two surviving in the U.S. on its original site. The mansion is
available for weddings, receptions, and meetings.

Youth development through
the game of golf...that’s what
The First Tee, a program by The
Maryland-National Capital Park
and Planning Commission, is
proud to sponsor. The program
is targeted especially for those
who have not previously had
exposure to the game.
A unique component of the program is the integration of
life skills emphasizing responsibility, integrity, and respect for
the values of the game, with instruction and training about the
sport. Classes are offered at four locations: Enterprise Golf
Course in Mitchellville (301-249-2040); Henson Creek Golf
Course in Fort Washington (301-567-4646); Kentland Youth
Golf Training Center in Landover (301-386-2278); or Paint
Branch Golf Complex in College Park (301-935-0330). Three
levels of participation include: Par Level, for new golfers
offering instruction and training for children (ages 7-18); Birdie
Level, providing progressive training sessions and playing
opportunities; and Eagle Level, promoting advanced
instruction and tournament play. Each level has an extensive
evaluation process, with graduation to the next level
monitored to ensure enjoyment and progress. The fee is $75
for the first child and $50 for each additional child. Class
sessions last 7-8 weeks per session with classes beginning in
late March and ending in early October. Class registration
begins in February. For more information, please call the
facility (see above list; TTY 301-446-6802) or visit

A Photography Exhibit curated by Kathleen Ewing
In 1971, Steve Szabo gave up his career as an award-winning
photojournalist for The Washington Post and went to live in an
old farmhouse in a remote area of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
For over two years, Szabo roamed the back roads of the lower
Eastern Shore documenting the region with an 8x10-inch view
camera. The result was a series of platinum photographs,
printed between 1971 and 1976. The images from this series
