Competing at an Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association high school
provincial championship is the culmination of years of practice,
commitment and dedication on the part of student athletes and
coaches. It is in recognition of these outstanding efforts that I
welcome you to the 2015/2016 ASAA 2A Girls Basketball Provincial
Championship, hosted by Picture Butte.
The significant volunteer time committed to this event by members of the local
championship organizing committee will ensure that you are treated especially well this
weekend. I wish to thank event chair Jon Vande Griend for taking on the mammoth task
of hosting. The efforts of Jon, the staff, students, parents and friends from the Picture
Butte community should be recognized and I encourage athletes and coaches to take a
few moments during the tournament to say thank you to your hosts.
The ASAA is proud to be associated with student athletes and coaches, and we know
many of these individuals either are, or will be leaders in their schools and community. I
challenge all athletes, coaches and spectators to promote the highest levels of ethics,
integrity, sportsmanship and respect for others throughout this championship – both
during competition and outside of the competitive arena. You are role models who we
trust will celebrate your success with humility and defeat with grace. What a great
opportunity you have to show everyone the positive correlation between school
athletics and positive character development.
I want to acknowledge and thank the ASAA’s Senior Partners: Alberta Milk and
SUBWAY®, Major Partners: Morgex Insurance and Entripy Shops and our Suppliers,
which are listed throughout this championship program, for their ongoing support of the
ASAA and student athletes across the province. Their support of the ASAA enhances the
provincial championship experience.
Have a fantastic time at this championship; I trust you will take home memories that will
last throughout your lifetime.

The Immanuel Christian Eagles have worked hard this year. Like most seasons, we lost some games
we thought we could win and we won some games we could have easily lost! We are a good blend of
grade 11s and 12s and have a nice batch of grade 9s coming up to the High School next year. We hope
everyone enjoys the Provincial Championship experience.

St. John Paul II’s Senior Girls Basketball team is a group of exceptionally hard working players who have
really proved themselves as tough competitors this season. They battled in an exciting zone final to earn
their spot at provincials and continue to exceed expectations. Regular season play was an exciting mix of
close games and overtime battles through which the girls experienced a huge amount of growth. We have
two graduating players who have really worked to build our basketball program along with a strong core of
grade elevens and three rookie players who might be young, but who definitely play big. All the girls are so
excited for this opportunity to compete!

This year our team is led by a strong core of grade 12’s whose goal was to make it back to provincials after
missing out last season. We play in the very strong and competitive Southern Alberta Girls League which
includes 8 provincially ranked teams out of the 10 member schools. With a 14-6 tournament record,
highlights of our year include being champions at the Vauxhall tournament and making the final at our
home tournament, Brooks and the Rundle College Sweet 16. We are proud to have been ranked in the top
3 for the entire season and are looking forward to this year’s provincial championship.

Having our most veteran team in recent memory with six seniors, our Knights worked hard this season
to return to the provincial championships by earning a wildcard berth. After league games across
central Alberta and touring the province with tournaments in Evansburg, Lacombe, Bonneyville, La
Crete, Barrhead, and Sedgewick, the Knights are excited to head south! A baby joined our team in
January, and bragging rights about babysitting skills quickly surpassed any basketball conversations.
Our team looks forward to competitive child rearing and basketball in Picture Butte!
