Welcome to Vienna!
You have chosen to come to the right place to develop your academic
knowledge and skills: Vienna has a lot to offer its visitors. In this program you
will find a number of organisational tips to make your arrival and stay as
pleasant as possible. What is more, we believe that who studies hard, also
needs to play hard in order to keep a good balance. This is why we compiled a
small collection of our personal highlights of Vienna city life for you. We
focused on places the Viennese love to go to spend their free time, and on
activities that don’t require a lot of money to have a fabulous time.
Arrival & Registration
To get to downtown Vienna from Vienna International Airport, you can choose
between conventional taxis, shuttle buses and the cat train, or book our pickup
service at http://www.viport.at/en - it is unlikely that you will find a better offer
than with Viport, who charge EUR 29 for 3 passengers or EUR 48 for 8
passengers. If you want to combine your airport pickup with other Summer
School participants, you can use the Facebook group INNES SUMMER VIENNA
2016 to find other likeminded travellers and split the fare. It takes about 30
minutes to reach the city centre. It is extremely important that you co-ordinate
your arrival date and time directly with Housing Office, so that somebody will be
there to welcome you, especially if you arrive outside of normal working hours.
In case you arrive before 10 am in the morning or after 8 pm at night, you can
instruct Viport to pick up the key for you, which they will happily do, for an extra
charge of EUR 20. This way you can have a smooth arrival, even if you arrive at
unconventional hours.
In order to avoid long waiting times on Monday, July 4th, come and register
yourself with INNES on Sunday, July 3rd, between 4 pm and 6 pm. Simply come
to Favoritenstraße 4-6, ring the doorbell, enter the building, take the steps on
the left, and you will find us on the first floor.
WLAN & Emergency Contact Numbers
Wireless LAN is widely available in Vienna. In many restaurants and bars it is
provided as a standard service, and there are many free hotspots around town.
Here at INNES you can of course connect to our WLAN (Name/PW:
innesguest2013). At peak times, however, our WLAN connection might
become a little overworked - please do not get frustrated with this, but try to
connect with a different hotspot.

Cityscape & Safety
Vienna is divided into 23 districts. These 23 districts are arranged in a spiral
starting from the 1st district. Each district has its own name, such as “Innere
Stadt” (inner city) for the 1st district, or “Wieden” for the 4th, where INNES is
located. In most cases, however, people use the numbers to indicate the
districts. Each municipal district has its own distinctive character and charm.
So-called “no-go areas”, like in many other cities, simply do not exist in Vienna!
By the way, the tap water in Vienna is perfectly fine to drink.
Public Transport in Vienna
Buses, trains, trams and underground lines will take you anywhere in the
city in no time at all. On weekends and public holidays the underground
runs all night, but on weekdays the public transport stops at midnight. If you
are under 27, you can purchase a travel pass with us for EUR 25, which
enables you to use the entire inner-city public transport network for 3
weeks. Many of you will have already booked their travel pass when they
completed their online registration. If you haven’t booked one, but would
like to have one, send us an email (deadline: 2 weeks before your program
starts) at [email protected].
There is a great site that helps you to plan your journeys within the city. If
you enter your point of departure and your target destination,

Alternatively, you could use an app called qando Vienna for routes and
timetables. The quickest way to get to INNES is by underground (U2 or U4
Station: Karlsplatz, U1 Station: Taubstummengasse) - but depending where
you are travelling from, it might be easier to catch one of the many trams or
busses that pass by Karlsplatz. Have fun exploring!

Social Program
How to participate in the Social Program
The entire Social Program is optional, and you can pick and mix
exactly those things that interest you the most. Except for a few
organised tours, most sights can be explored independently. For
you to connect to other international participants we have set up a
Facebook group called INNES SUMMER VIENNA 2016.
Communicate through this group and explore the city together! If
you have any questions, need help, or simply want to share great
pictures and experiences, this is the ideal place to grow your
network and meet new friends.

The Ottakringer Brewery, which opened in 1837, is the last large brewery
remaining in Vienna and is located in Ottakring, the 16th district of Vienna. During
the guided tour you will be introduced into the process of beer production.

The United Nations Office at Vienna was established as the third United Nations
Headquarters after New York and Geneva (and before Nairobi). It is an extraterritorial
area. Multilingual guides inform you about the United Nations in the field of drugs and
crime, the peaceful uses of outer space, and refugees. Specialized agencies deal with
industrial development, the peaceful use of nuclear energy and the banning of nuclear
weapon testing. You will visit exhibitions and a conference room and get to know the
fascinating world of the United Nations. The tour lasts approx. 1.5 hours.

tastes delicious and the space is clean and cozy. Get out at U2 Schottenring
and walk 5 minutes to reach this oasis of urban lifestyle.

A typical student meeting point in Vienna. The food they serve is partly
Austrian, Italian and Arabic, the beer is cold and fresh, prices are excellent. A
full breakfast costs EUR 3,50. On the weekends, brunch is served until 4 pm.
Take tram 5 and get out at Florianigasse.
CAFÉS/BARS/PARTY/EVENTS
There is a massive choice of cafés, bars, clubs and discos all over town. Typical night-life
areas include the Bermuda triangle in the 1st district, the Gürtelbögen between U6 stations
Thaliastraße and Josefstädterstraße, as well as the entire area around Naschmarkt and
Donaukanal near Schwedenplatz. Once you are here, try to check our update board at
INNES Institute for special event tips. Here are two of our favorite insider spots during July:

Opera/Classical concerts
Vienna is the city of high culture – and of high ticket prices. With a little extra effort,
however, you can see a sensational opera performance at a reduced price (see tips below)

If you show up 80 minutes before a show, you can buy an cheap ticket for EUR 3-4 at the
evening box office (entrance: Operngasse). Standing room tickets are greatly sought after,
so make sure to queue early!

The Golden Hall of the Musikverein is considered one of the world’s most beautiful and

Concerts & Street life

The WUK is one of the largest cultural centers in Europe, with room for 130 autonomously
organized groups and individual initiatives. It is a cool and alternative space to visit at any
time during the day, and it also has a cosy restaurant. From July 15th to August 15th, go and
join WUK’s free concerts with international acts – open air and free entrance! Every day
from Tuesdays till Fridays, at 8.30 pm.

Take the U6 to Josefstätterstraße or Alserstraße, walk across the Gürtel and dive into one
of the most multicultural districts in Vienna. The area around Yppenplatz square is one of
Vienna’s most vibrant and great for people-watching. Its lifeline is the Brunnenmarkt, which
with more than 170 market stalls is Vienna’s largest street market. You might even decide
to participate in one of the many free events at Brunnenpassage - a place where people
from different backgrounds can meet and develop art projects together.

In the summer, numerous open-air cinemas show a variety of interesting films on huge
screens. Our two favourite picks are:

SELF-GUIDED EXPLORATION
AND VISITS
Around the first district
Vienna is quite rightly considered as a large open-air museum. Conveniently, many landmarks are
located directly in the old centre of the city, the 1st district. Places of interest include the Ringstraße,
Kärtner Straße, Stephansplatz, Hofburg and Heldenplatz right in front of the National library.
Places to see outside the 1st district
All districts have their own charm and there isn’t any area which you should avoid. Cool areas
include the entire 7th district (in and around Neubaugasse) as well as the 9th district (in and around
Altes AKH - get together with some other participants and explore! Here are three highlights that we
recommend:
Schönbrunn

Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of Austria’s Imperial Family, is one of the most
beautiful Baroque palaces and lush gardens in Europe. Go for a leisurely stroll through the
magnificent park and soak up the beauty and splendour of the place. Make sure you visit Gloriette,
which is located on a small hill, to enjoy superb views of Vienna. Take U4 to Schönbrunn to get
there.
MQ Museumsquartier

Vienna’s famous arts centre boasts not only prominent museums and galleries but also a bustling
café and restaurant scene. Nice food is served at the restaurants in MQ (Our favorite: Kantine). You
can also bring your own picnic and lounge around the numerous attractive seating facilities. Take
U3 to Volkstheater or U2 to Museumsquartier.
Prater

This amusement park has everything your adventurous heart has been looking for: ghost trains,
roller coasters and the famous 110-year-old Ferris wheel. It offers its passengers a brilliant view of
Vienna. The Prater amusement park is located right in the middle of a large recreational area, which
is great for an afternoon picnic, a game of football and people watching. Admission is free! Simply
take U2 to Praterstern.

during Summer. They also offer alternative pub crawl tours during the evenings,
which will give you access to the local nightlife scene. They are organising their tour

The main provider of guided tours in Vienna offers different tours dealing with
Viennese history. The exact meeting points and schedules differ from walk to walk.
Most walks last 1.5 - 2 hours and are available in English. Tickets cost EUR 15. Find

SPORTING ACTIVITIES &
OUTDOOR SWIMMING
We think it is a really good idea to balance your intensive studies with some
outdoor sporting activities or a refreshing dip into the blue. For a good listing

The most beautiful and central parks in Vienna include Belvedere, Augarten,
Prater and Türkenschantzpark, and of course, the famous Donauinsel.
Donauinsel
Take U6 to Neue Donau or U1 to this 20 km long, narrow island in the middle
of the river Danube. A network of trails invites the athletically inclined to hike,
jog, cycle and skate. The best thing: You can swim in the Donau and the Alte
Donau - it is clean, safe and refreshing! You could also rent a boat, surf, water
ski, or even try wakeboarding. There are many great spots to swim in the
Danube, but here is our favourite one: Just type “An der unteren Alten Donau”
into your navi and find this tranquil swimming oasis in the alte Donau, 5 min
walking from U2 Donaustadtbrücke.
DAYTRIPS & WEEKEND TRIPS
OUTSIDE OF VIENNA
Why not visit some places outside of Vienna on the weekends? Salzburg?
Graz? Budapest? Bratislava? You can easily reach any destination within the
country, or even in neighbouring countries, using public transport. ÖBB, the
Austrian Railways, has the largest network of routes. Should your destination
be Linz, Salzburg, or Graz, the Westbahn trains are a significantly cheaper
alternative.
For example, a one-way ticket from Wien to Salzburg with Westbahn costs
EUR 25.50. You can simply buy the ticket on the train for no extra fee!
Interested to visit Bratislava? Take the Twincityliner from Central Vienna
(Schwedenplatz) right into the heart of downtown Bratislava. Boats run daily at
least 5 times a day, a one-way trip will cost you between EUR 20-30 and last 1
hour and 15 minutes. Visiting Bratislava is totally worth a day trip, but if you
want to go to Salzburg or Budapest, you may want to plan at least one
overnight stay to make the most of your visit. If you need more assistance with
