The Oldest American Furniture Company—
It All Started With One Chair.
Even before Paul
Revere set out
on his famous
night ride, there
was a Nichols
making furniture.
As early as 1762,
the Nichols Bros.
Chair manufactory was crafting
chairs by hand in Westminster,
Massachusetts.
In 1857 Nichols & Stone began
specializing in the crafting of
Windsor Chairs and Rockers
from fine solid wood. At the
turn of the 20th century, the
business was moved to
neighboring Gardner,
Massachusetts to gain access
to the railway. The second of
two fires leveled the plant,
but adversity was turned into
opportunity. An updated brick
factory was opened in 1907 by
Charles Nichols, with his new
partner Reuben Stone, under
the name Nichols & Stone.
By the 1930s, Edmund L.
Nichols and Albert Stone had
taken the helm. Responding
to consumer preferences they
specialized in Windsor chairs
and Boston rockers, building
the brand awareness still
enjoyed today.

Carlton E. “Tuck” Nichols, Jr.
is the 8th generation of Nichols.
Involved in Nichols & Stone, Tuck entered the business in 1968 and is credited for continuing the
sophisticated machinery and expanding the company’s product assortment with a wide range of
options. He has remained committed to providing the most comfortable, most durable and most
flexible furnishings made from solid wood.
American Made Furniture
Sustainable, Durable, and Comfortable
Every piece in the Nichols & Stone Dining Collection
is crafted in America from hard northern birch and
maple from sustainable forests. Both maple and birch
trees are self-seeding, resulting in multiple new trees
growing for every tree that is harvested. In our
Manlius, NY factory every piece of wood is used,
including the sawdust (which is used to heat the building)!
Our construction methods are steeped in the tradition of
furniture that’s made to last. Our wooden chair seats are
constructed for maximum durability. Compressed tenon
joinery makes the delicate spindle design of our chair backs
as sturdy as the seats. Nichols & Stone’s techniques in
steam bending create chairs of comfort, grace and integrity
unmatched in the industry. Each seat is scooped for comfort
and the chair is pitched to fit your body. You need only to
sit in a Nichols & Stone chair to appreciate how comfortable

Dawn of a New Era
In 2008, the Audi family, owners of L. & J.G. Stickley, purchased the intellectual property,
designs and other assets of Nichols & Stone. With Tuck Nichols’ help they are committed to
continuing the company’s proud legacy. The Nichols & Stone product line is offered as a separate
division, maintaining its historic logo and the quality and design that have made it so popular.
Carlton “Tuck” Nichols, Jr. presents Edward and Aminy Audi with Nichols & Stone chairs inscribed with their names, dated July 3, 2008.
Chair Construction
Antique lovers continue to drop us letters telling how they’ve come across
an original Nichols & Stone chair dating back to the 1800’s. The chairs seem
to last forever and even today, many of the tried and true chair manufacturing
techniques from decades ago are still used.
Steambent for Beauty
Wedged Posts
The graceful cur ve of this
chair is achieved by
steambending one continuous
piece of wood.
Small wood pieces are
wedged flush with the
sur face of the arm of
the chair to ensure a
sturdy armrest.
Deep Saddle Seat
Pinned for Security
Thick planks are turned in
different directions and
glued together forming a
stronger seat than a single
piece of wood. A “saddle”
is scooped out of the seat
for added comfor t.
Small pins are inser ted at
stress points such as back
spindles and leg stretchers
to prevent the opening of
the joint.
Mortise Joints
Corners Blocked
Strong joints are created
by mor tise and tenon
joiner y where a tenon end
is forced into a smaller
mor tised opening.
Most chairs are corner
blocked on all four sides by
attaching blocks with glue
and screws for a tight joint
and added frame strength.
Compressed Joints
Handwoven Seats
Legs are connected to the
chair seat after a “ribbed”
or deeply cut leg is glued,
inser ted into the seat hole,
and expands to form a tight,
snug bond.
Fiber seats are still
handmade with all four sides
woven toward the center
for the most long lasting,
durable weave pattern.

Corner Leg Bracing
Support Blocks
While each table leg is held
firmly in place by a strong
corner bolt system, legs
can be easily removed for
shipping or moving.
Blocks hold the top securely
in place and prevent warping
and racking throughout years
of ser vice.
Wood Table Slides
Solid wood slides below the
tabletop provide rigidity and
strength as well as a place
for drop-in leaves- so easy
that one person can open
both ends at once.

Leaves Are Matched
to Each Table
Leaves are first hand
fitted and then numbered
to connect into the proper
sequence to expand the table.

Interlocking Aprons
New Apron Edge
Directional pins align with
holes in corresponding
leaves to ensure a snug
fit. Many leaves also
have matching aprons for
continuous design and
disguising of leaves.
The natural expansion of
solid wood requires a
narrow gap between the
apron below the table halves.
This offset gap design hides
unsightly “see through” for
a nicer presentation.
Easy To Close
Table Locks
Protective Finish
Locks located beneath both
sides of an extension table
keep the piece tightly closed
so that the table does not
open accidentally.
A clear protective finish is
applied to all table tops and
allows spills to be wiped
off without any permanent
stains. See page 86 for
more information.
Cabinet Construction
Hundreds of years ago, furniture manufacturers were known as “cabinet makers”.
As cabinet makers perfected their craft they would become known for their
individual special touches and style. Thus a craftsman’s reputation was built on
his construction methods. This legacy lives on at Nichols & Stone through our
own unique approach to cabinet construction.
Mortise Joinery
Dovetail Drawers
Mor tise and tenon joints are
used throughout our cabinets,
resulting in extremely rigid
construction and eliminate
case racking and shifting.
A sign of a well-made
drawer, dovetail joints hold
the fronts and backs onto
the drawer sides. Drawers
will remain tightly together
and square for years of
trouble-free use.
Dust Proof Panels
Wood Drawer Guide
Panels are placed between
each drawer to seal the
dust and par ticles from the
contents inside. Panels
also add more stability to
the entire case and prevent
drawers from sticking.
The center guide assures
continuous drawer alignment
with no racking or squeaking
for a smooth and quiet
drawer operation for years.
Fitted Doors
Flush-Fitted Backs
When doors are custom
fitted to each case frame,
it assures that the door will
fit proper ty with no gaps.
This results in a smooth, free
swinging door operation and
doors are straight and even.
A flush back panel fits inside
the wood frame to add
rigidity to the entire cabinet.
Screws are used for a more
permanent connection than
staples or nails; and provide
a cleaner appearance.
Corner Blocks &
Levelers
Corner blocks are used at
stress joints to reinforce the
joint, par ticularly at corners.
Screw turn levelers provide
stability on even the most
uneven floors.

has been prized because not only is it classically beautiful, but it is also extremely comfortable.
The saddle scooped seat and spindled back are pitched for comfort and to support

Solid Wood Table Tops That Are EASY To Care For:
Should you spill, or have a cold glass drip on the table top, just wipe it up with a soft towel.
Some of the common household liquids this finish protects against are:
- cold and warm water
- oils and fats
- vinegar
- fruits
- most soaps and
- coffee, tea and
detergents
cocoa
- lighter fluid
- catsup
Some tips on caring for your table:
- If using a polish or wax use only non-silicone products.
- When a hot dish, or cup, is placed directly onto a solid wood top, moisture may be drawn from
the wood and trapped under the topcoat causing discoloration. To prevent this we suggest using hot pads, or trivets with soft bottoms, to protect the table top.
- Sunlight is not a friend of solid wood furniture and prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight
can discolor the finish. Please be careful so as not to place furniture in direct sun and move
accessories around so they don’t mask the sun and discolor the top unevenly.
Remember, solid wood furniture ages beautifully as exposure to light and natural oils affect its color
and patina. With minimum care and attention your Nichols & Stone furniture will last many years.

absorption of moisture left by cold drinks on tables.
Wiping up promptly will eliminate white watermarks.

Authentic Colors
When our design team selected the paint color “Maize”, they
studied the entire yellow spectrum, including faded antiques,
to come up with this particular tone.
Worn Edges
The craftsman in this photo is rubbing the top coat off the
edge of this seat to allow the wood color below to show. It’s a
combination of sandpaper and rags to create this “worn” look.
Distressed Surfaces
Authentic antiques are hard to find and sometimes, prohibitively
expensive. That’s why our stylists have engineered ways to add
“aging effects” to the fronts of drawers and doors.
Paint Build Up
When cherished furniture stays in a family over several generations,
it seems each new owner feels an obligation to repaint the piece.
Over the years of stripping and painting, some of the old colors
remain in the crevices and corners...an antique effect we can duplicate.
Hand Planed
Replicating vintage furniture manufacturing, this feature is
completed by our craftsmen using a real hand plane to finish the
tops of the tables. Over time, the blades on hand planes would
wear down and show tear outs, chatter marks and grooves.
True to the nature of hand-planning, these characteristics are
featured in our pieces.
