You don’t have to be hip to get gloriously
lost in music.
What being able to access music in new ways
has done is to take the timeless pleasure of

music – those amazing moments when a tune, a
riff or a lyric opens up our emotions or taps into our
memories – and allowed us to carry that pleasure
with us wherever we are, whatever we’re doing.
We are playlist people, who are not chained to
original album running orders or the tyranny of
A-sides and B-sides; we decide what sounds good
next to what, or we throw a set of loose rules at our
music library and see what comes out. If it works,
we’ll send it to a friend, if it doesn’t, we’ll delete.

Music is changing, but how it makes us feel is
still as powerful as it was in 1761 when
a five-year-old Mozart entertained his parents
at the clavier, in 1942 when lovers in the
dancehalls swooned to Glenn Miller, and in
2008 when young men felt strangely moved
by Katy Perry…
People of a certain age might still wax lyrical
about how great vinyl sounds, whilst their nieces
and nephews barely know what a CD is, but even
those of us who can’t quite bring ourselves to
consign our tattered old albums to the attic have
to concede that the era of downloading music
has transformed our favourite pastime. The
instant delivery and quality of what we can have
in the palm of our hands has not only given
music fans something to cheer about, but has
brought music back to the masses. Look around
you on the tube – how many people now sit with
headphones on, who would never bother to dust
off their stereo at home?

Music is aways evolving, and downloading
tracks is simply the easiest way to hear the
music you love whatever you want, wherever
you are, says Laura Lee Davies

THE FUTURE OF MUSIC
It’s a music revolution: we are the DJs of our
own worlds.
Just as we might contemplate what combination
of clothes we pull out of the wardrobe every
morning, we can chop and change, we can
re-arrange the tracks we want to hear, and we love
the unexpected places it takes us. Today, T. Rex
might lead us straight to Goldfrapp and on to Kings
of Leon – children of the revolution, ooh la la, sex
on fire! Tomorrow, ‘Let’s Get It On’ by Marvin Gaye
might lead us off on a very different adventure –
our stories are just a few clicks away…

This, once you’ve bought your Nokia Comes With
Music phone, is essentially what’s on offer here.
The Nokia 5310, a sleek and capable handset,
costs just £129.95 on pay-as-you-go from
Carphone Warehouse. It has dedicated music
player buttons and, crucially, a 3.5mm headphone
jack, so you can use the supplied headphones or
substitute your favourite ones. Once you’re home,
check out the Nokia music store, where you’ll find
literally millions of tracks at reasonable prices.
But once you’ve entered the supplied PIN code,
the prices disappear and you can download
unlimited tracks to your PC and transfer them to
play on your phone. As you’d imagine with Nokia,
this is a simple and intuitive process.
With music rental services, when your
subscription runs out, the tracks you’ve been
renting vanish. However, with Nokia Comes With
Music you have access to the Nokia store for a
year, and then – and here’s the beautiful part –
every song you’ve downloaded is yours to keep. No
extra costs, nothing. It’s a simple but spectacular
way to build up a great music library, which you can
play on your phone and through your PC.
