West End Festival 2015
Welcome
Welcome to the internationally acclaimed West End
Festival - Glasgow’s largest multi-cultural event,
celebrating 20 years in 2015. It’s been a busy few
months as we also launched our latest venture – the
“Electric Gardens” in January and February earlier
this year, which was attended by 15,000 people in
the beautiful Botanic Gardens.

Thank You

We hope you will attend as much as you can in June,
and give your support to the 100-plus organisations and
venues that make up this largest of community events.
Festival Sunday and the famous Carnival Parade will
once again take place in Byres Road on Sunday 7 June
with support from Glasgow Life and the newly-formed
Byres Road Traders Association. The ever-popular
Gibson Street Gala will precede the Festival on 31
May, and the Glasgow Mela takes place on 14 June in
Kelvingrove Park for those of you who like your festivals
local and vibrant.
The newly refurbished Bandstand will host free concerts
on June 7 and June 28. So keep your eyes and ears open
for more details!
A festival as dynamic as WEF in a city as dynamic as
Glasgow can’t stand still, and as well as new venues and
new performers, we hope you notice the ever-increasing
section on choral singing. This year there are at least 23
choirs and singing groups – a whole festival in its own
right! Please support them.
Ticketing at the festival
Some events offer tickets
in advance, so please read each
entry carefully for details.
It only leaves us to acknowledge all of our funders
including Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life and
Creative Scotland, as well as the W M Mann Foundation,
the Hugh Fraser Foundation & the Scottish Book Trust.
Also a big thank you to the many volunteers, Committee
and Board members who work tirelessly to ensure
the success of the Festival, as well as all the staff and
participants who give their expertise and energy to make
the West End Festival happen. You know who you are,
and your efforts are very much appreciated!

Our very own national poet (Makar) and dramatist Liz Lochhead
appears at Oran Mor on June 9 with Steve Kettley in a new show
and folk legend Peggy Seeger will make a historic visit to Oran
Mor on June 27.
The 20th West End Festival is full of delights and
surprises with over 400 events in around 75 different
venues. This year we are particularly pleased to
feature some big names across the artistic spectrum,
and we hope you will agree with us that this year’s
WEF is as good as it ever was!
In addition, our popular community events - the Gibson Street
Gala (May 31), the Festival Sunday and Byres Road Parade Day
(June 7), the Glasgow Mela (June 14) and the Queen Margaret
Drive local gala (June 21) are all back – plus dozens of local
events on your doorstep!
Look out for Elaine C Smith and Christina Dunwoodie in “Torch
Song Divas” (June 19 and 20), and the former children’s laureate
Julia Donaldson – one of the world’s best-selling authors - on
June 21 in Maryhill.
Add in a mini Festival of Singing (see pages 18 to 20), a
Galleries Open Day (June 11,) a trio of big free concerts in and
around Kelvingrove Park on Festival Sunday (June 7) and a
closing concert at the Kelvingrove Bandstand on June 28 and
you have a festival to remember!
We also welcome one of the world’s most successful composers
John Rutter conducting his own work at the Mackintosh,
Queen’s Cross on 14 June.

At the age of 24 at a time in her life when
most are graduating from university or
finding ‘real jobs’, Lisa Mitchell finds
herself in a unique situation, with a third
album bubbling under the surface. A
stubborn paradox; as elusive as she is
hungry, her new single ‘Wah Ha’ finds
Mitchell striving for the effortless. “I
needed to get back to the simple joys
of living, this song felt like a gift to help
me realise this.” With the emergence of
co-producer, Tim Harvey, there seems to
be a new found thirst for life, writing and
singing. Around the world and back again,
a sophomore album, more touring, a stint
working on a biodynamic farm, a soul
seeking journey in France... And now,
‘Wah Ha.’ Here we are with an offering
from a young woman who is still just
trying to connect.
Synergy Concerts presents:

wondrous beauty. It carves out its own
spooky spaces, reaching from her heart
to your ear in a miasma of ghostly guitars
and floating voices, haunting melodies
and cryptic lyrics, gilded by subtle,
understated instrumental touches and
sudden, startling sonic interventions.
Bones + Longing is the Tipperary native’s
fifth album. She was Mercury Prize
nominated for her debut, Night On My
Side, in 2002, and won the Meteor award
in Ireland for The Roads Don’t Love You

Illustrating Glasgow
Tues 9 June • 6.30pm
Glasgow historian Bill Black takes a long
look at how various artists, illustrators
and cartoonists have depicted Glasgow –
including its famous and ordinary people,
its events, its streets and its buildings over the last two centuries.
Grand Villas Of The
Clyde Estuary
Thurs 11 June • 6.30pm
Wed 17 June • 6.30pm
Share in the compelling and historically
rich journey from Glasgow’s first Lunatic
Asylum at Dobbie’s Loan to Gartnavel
Royal Hospital, with Eileen Ross as your
guide. She will reflect on how our local
services have promoted wellbeing and
provided mental health care to their
communities over the last two centuries.
Presented in conjunction with Art in
the Gart.
During the Victorian era and earlier, the
affluent families of Glasgow who wished
to have an escape from the noise and
dirt of the city, into a cleaner and quieter
setting, were wont to build their “second
homes” in pleasant surroundings on the
Clyde. Thus Alexander “Greek” Thomson
was commissioned to design villas in
Cove. Fiona Sinclair, architect and
historian, will take a historic photographic
trip down the Clyde Estuary to discover
some of these grand villas.

Forth And Clyde Canal
Tues 16 June • 6.30pm
The Forth and Clyde and Monkland
canals were hugely influential in the
growth of Glasgow two centuries ago.
Today, we enjoy their industrial heritage,
their waterway wildlife and green open
space of the towpaths. The idea of
connecting the Forth and Clyde by canal
was mooted in 1724 by Daniel Defoe and
the Forth & Clyde Canal became the
world’s first man-made sea-to-sea canal.
With Gordon Barr, former Heritage
Officer, Maryhill Burgh Halls.
Tenement
Management Old
And New
Thurs 18 June • 6.30pm
Many of us live in a traditional tenement,
subdivided terrace house or modern
flatted block. And whoever owns
the property has to work with other
owners to maintain the roof and other
“common” parts, and in many modern
developments, is also responsible for
grounds maintenance. Ann Flint, coauthor of the “Tenement Handbook”,
and Jean Charsley, Glasgow Factoring
Commission chair, talk about
current issues.
North Park House and
the Bell Collection
Mon 22 June • 6.30pm
George Fairfull-Smith, expert in
Glasgow’s Art History, presents the
background to the grand Victorian abode
of collector Henry Bell - North Park
House in Queen Margaret Drive - and
describes the rich collection of artwork
amassed and displayed there by the
owner in his lifetime.
Glasgow Botanic

Glasgow Botanic Gardens, will present
the prestigious history of the Botanic
Gardens, including 21st century
milestones such as refurbishment of the

Tues 23 June • 6.30pm
Jim Coyle MBE of Friends of Glasgow’s
Local Nature Reserves, describes the
birds and other wildlife at Bingham’s
Pond, Dawsholm Park, Possil Marsh
Reserve and the Millichen area, all linked
by the River Kelvin and the Forth &
Clyde Canal.
Webster’s
At Kelvinbridge
Wed 24 June • 6.30pm
Stained glass artists Alf Webster (18831915)and his son Gordon had a profound
influence on Scottish stained glass.
Both designed windows in the former
Lansdowne Church at Kelvinbridge,
and indeed Alf’s - amongst the finest
examples of stained glass in Scotland was installed shortly before his untimely
death in 1915 following wounds received
at Ypres. David Robertson describes
how the Four Acres Charitable Trust is
securing the future of this building and its
stained glass, and creating a new theatre
for Glasgow in the process.
Glasgow’s
Undergrounds
Thurs 25 June • 6.30pm
Glasgow’s first ‘Underground’ wasn’t the
Subway – it was the ‘City and District’
from Finnieston to High Street, under
Queen Street Station. Within the next
ten years, Glasgow built what was for
some years the world’s biggest ‘Tube’
system; and the Central Underground
from Dalmarnock to Maryhill – a grand
total of 14 miles through 27 stations
beneath city streets. Well-known BBC
broadcaster Colin Mackay outlines the
fight against fear and prejudice about
‘going underground’, and explains why
these lines helped to maintain Glasgow’s
industrial supremacy.
Talks
Gordon Urquhart, author and
historian, will discuss the work, lives and
relationships of Glasgow’s “other” great
architects, those relatively obscure
contemporaries of Greek Thomson and
C R Mackintosh most responsible for
the Victorian elegance and Edwardian
grandeur of today’s West End. Key
names such as Wilson, Rochead,
Boucher, Watson, Leiper, Sellars and
Miller will be featured.
