WELCOME
On behalf of the ACD Festival board of directors and staff,
welcome to Auburn! This year marks the 59th anniversary of
our festival, making it one of the oldest and largest festivals
in Indiana. This is the year of the Duesenberg and we have a
“Duesy” of a lineup for our guests including music and pageantry
on the main stage, auctions, history, kids activities and even some
fireworks for added excitement!
A special welcome is extended to the stars of the show—the
ACD cars and their owners—as they celebrate this annual reunion
spanning 59 years. What a wonderful tradition they have shared
with the city of Auburn! Look for exciting events listed throughout
this publication.

WELCOME
On behalf of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg (ACD) Club, I would like to welcome you to the city
of Auburn, “Home of the Classics.” Our club, founded in 1952, is focused on the restoration and
preservation of original Auburn, Cord and Duesenberg automobiles. We will celebrate our 59th
annual reunion here during this Labor Day weekend and will be celebrating our big 60th in 2016.
Each year, the ACD Club selects a “Year of” automobile, and for 2015, it’s the Year of the
Duesenberg. We are expecting a large number of Duesenbergs this year being brought to Auburn
from as far east as New England, as far west as Washington State and as far south as Florida. We
have two special events planned for this weekend especially designed for the Duesenberg owners:
a special Duesenberg Lunch Tour and the Thunder Run. On Friday, the Duesenberg Lunch Tour
ACD cars will be lining up in front of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum around
11 a.m. You will not want to miss this great lineup of these magnificent automobiles assembled
together. On Sunday around 11:30 a.m., we will again be lining up our cars at the museum to
begin the 45-mile journey to the Thunder Run under a state police escort.
All Auburn, Cord and Duesenberg cars registered for our Annual Reunion, will be displayed at
Eckhart Park on Saturday and the public is welcome to purchase entry at the park.
Please enjoy all that the City of Auburn, the Festival Committee, the Auburn Cord Duesenberg
Automobile Museum, the National Auto and Truck Museum and the ACD Club have to offer you.
We hope that you will return year after year as our club members have for the past six decades.
Joel E. Givner

“The Foundation’s abilities and contributions to the community are a direct result of the efforts from our team members.
We are all committed to our communities and the Foundation tries to support that commitment as generously as
possible,” says Rick James, founder and CEO of Metal Technologies Inc. The company is the sole source of funds for the
MTI Foundation and James says, “It is the effort of our 1,300 team members that make it possible.”
Metal Technologies Inc. is a North American metal casting company with its headquarters located in Auburn. It
created the MTI Foundation because of its deep-seeded commitment to the communities in which it operates and a desire
to give back.
The MTI Foundation’s mission is
to improve the quality of life in its
communities. With its emphasis on
education and youth activities, it
supports a variety of organizations.
“All of our giving is to activities or
organizations in which our team
members belong or volunteer,”
James says. Here’s what three
organizations have to say about
MTI Foundation’s support:
Wendy Oberlin, Executive Director of
Community Foundation DeKalb County
What affects have the donations
from the MTI Foundation
had on the community?
“Grant support from the MTI
Foundation has been crucial to the
success of many local charitable
projects. Leadership giving by the
MTI Foundation often inspires
others to also give generously.
The foundation supports art,
culture and education of our children
and families. This helps make

Laura Brinkman, Executive
President of Trine University
Director/CEO of the Auburn Cord
Duesenberg Automobile Museum
What is the Auburn Cord
Duesenberg Automobile Museum’s
mission and how has the MTI
Foundation helped to achieve that?
“The Auburn Cord Duesenberg
Automobile Museum attracts tens
of thousands of guests to the region
from all over the world. Its mission
is to engage guests in enriched,
educational and fun experiences about
Auburn’s unique automotive heritage.
The MTI Foundation and its 1,300
employees, vendors and customers
graciously support the museum and
its work. The Metal Technologies
Inc. Education Center has served
thousands of students in meeting
Dr. Earl D. Brooks II,
What has the MTI Foundation’s
support done for Trine University?
“Trine University students enjoy
vibrant facilities and a safety net
thanks to the MTI Foundation. We
appreciate the MTI Foundation for
many of our campus enhancements.
It created Trine’s Cast Metals Center

The Year of the Duesenberg

uesenberg! The very name
evokes luxury, grandeur
and the sheer pleasure of
motoring. The magnificent
Duesenberg automobile of
the 20s and 30s elevated
personal transportation
to epic proportions.
These successes were the
rewards to brothers Fred and
Augie Duesenberg who possessed
amazing creative automotive talents
that complemented one another.
The first passenger car to bear
the Duesenberg name appeared at
the New York Auto Salon held at
the Hotel Commodore in November
1920. The car, today known as the
Model A, featured an inline eightcylinder engine and four-wheel
hydraulic brakes, both firsts on an
American production car. With great
expectations, production began
in 1921. However, by the end of
1922 a meager total of only 150
cars had been sold. Even though
three victories in the Indianapolis
14 All Things Auburn
500-mile races made Duesenberg a
household name, they did little to
boost sales. However, the greatest
days for the Duesenberg marque
were yet to come, as industrial genius
and entrepreneur extraordinaire,
E.L. Cord, entered the picture.
Looking for an offering with speed
and prestige, Cord cast his eyes on
Duesenberg. Not only did Cord come
into possession of one of America’s
most respected luxury marques, but
along with the new Duesenberg came
Fred Duesenberg. Cord challenged
Fred to start with a clean slate and
create the world’s finest motorcar,
regardless of cost. He was up for
the challenge and the result was
the magnificent and incomparable
Model J. The car was announced
in the fall of 1928 with orders being
filled in the spring of 1929. The
list price was $8,500 for a running
chassis, with complete cars starting
at $13,500 and eventually reaching
over $20,000. All Duesenberg Model
Js carried custom coachwork. For
these astronomical prices, customers
got one of the largest, fastest, and
most luxurious and technologically
advanced automobiles in the
world. Duesenbergs became the
favorites of movie stars, monarchs
and millionaires. There was
nothing else like it in America. The
heart of the car was a 420-cubicinch, 32-valve, dual overhead
cam straight-eight engine that
developed 265 horsepower.
The Great Depression had a
devastating affect on automobile
sales, particularly luxury brands.
Accordingly, Duesenberg was hard
hit as poor economic conditions
lingered into the 1930s. Ultrawealthy and famous individuals
were eager Duesenberg purchasers
but their numbers were too small
to sustain the ailing company. The
last of the fabulous Model Js were
built in 1937. A total of only 481
of the highly coveted masterpieces
had been produced by the time
Duesenberg closed its doors. 2015 - 2016 15

Auburn, Indiana…
AUBURN
As the “Hub of Transportation Heritage” for northeast Indiana,
DeKalb County is in the fast lane for tourism impact.
As the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival celebrates its 59th anniversary, it’s
easy to see the impact this festival has had on the community during its rich
and long history. Whether it be the sprawling 235-acre Auburn Auction Park,
one of the largest venues of its kind in the United States, or the Auburn Cord
Duesenberg Automobile Facility which is designated as a National Historic
Landmark, it is easy to see the gems this rich automotive celebration still bears
today. But if you go beyond the cars and past the great historic walls, there is
more than meets the eye.
When the Auburn Automobile
Company closed its doors in 1937
due in large part to pressure from
the Great Depression, not to mention
the U.S. Securities and Exchange
commission, it left a community with
a large dependency on the automotive
industry in despair. Not only were the
citizens of Auburn out of work, many
had invested their savings in the
company as well. Just two decades
later the newly-formed Auburn Cord
Duesenberg Club rolled into town
for its first reunion. Not everyone
welcomed them with open arms,
but fortunately, a few Auburn locals
along with the Chamber of Commerce
recognized the potential upside of
this tourism to the town and worked
to tirelessly welcome the visitors and
creatively brainstorm ways to grow the
festivities.
In the early 1970s, some great
minds decided to give a collector car
auction a try. It was such a success
that traffic from the event shut down
Interstate 69 and prompted national
media coverage at the high prices
garnered from “used” cars at the
auction. The collector car auction
industry put Auburn on the map,
expanding over the decades. In 2015,
Auburn is privileged to have two
collector car auctions during Labor
Day weekend offering some of the
world’s finest automobiles. 18 All Things Auburn

TEN HUT!
Surviving members of the Task Force Ranger team
are working to better the lives of veterans.
The Battle of Mogadishu was
initially a mission given to the Task
Force Ranger team, one of the United
States’ most elite assault teams.
After two Black Hawk helicopters
were shot down, it
turned into an 18-hour
battle and the death of
18 American heroes
and 73 wounded.
This tragic event has
become one of the
best-known American
military missions
because of a book
written by Mark
Bowden called Black
Hawk Down, which subsequently
became a hit blockbuster film.
Surviving members of the Task
Force Ranger team have created
organizations to support the
health and well-being of veterans
20 All Things Auburn
across the country, such as the
Three Rangers Foundation.
The Three Rangers Foundation
holds an array of ranger and veteranowned and operated companies that
provide 100 percent of
the operating capital
to the foundation, a
501(c)3 organization.
The foundation was
started by John
Collett, one of the
rangers attending
as Grand Marshal.
As a disabled
veteran himself,
John understands firsthand the
difficulties that our veterans face in
their communities each day. The
mission of the Three Rangers
Foundation is empowering veterans
to achieve lifelong successes. 1971

elationships and

deal at Briner Building
Inc. in Bluffton.
“We’re very organized
as a company,” says
Mike Swinford, president of Briner
Building Inc. “We manage all of our
office and construction operations
with many weekly, in-house and job
site meetings with employees, subcontractors and owners. I think it’s
one of the things that differentiates
Briner from the competition.”
As a design-build general
contractor specializing in commercial
and industrial building construction,
Briner Building Inc. is a one-stop,
design-build service for companies
looking to build a new facility
on a new green space site or
expanding their current facility.
“Our main focus has always
been our many return customer
relationships,” says Swinford.
“Our customers know they can
count on us to deliver the products
and services they need within
their budget and schedule. Most
customers want a single source
design-build contractor like us.”
Over the last 45 years, Briner
has designed and built several
million square feet of commercial

throughout northeast Indiana.
The projects have ranged in
size from 5,000 square foot
buildings to a 528,000 square
foot manufacturing facility.
“We’re a design solution for
whatever our customers need,” says
Bryan Harshbarger, vice president
of sales and marketing at Briner.
“Be it installing the entrance door
or an entire building, we’re a design
solution from concept to completion.”
Harshbarger is one of four partners
who privately own Briner Building
Inc. President Mike Swinford has
worked with Briner for 41 years,
Vice President/Construction Dave
Dunwiddie, 37 years, Vice President/
Project Development Chris Elser, 28
years and Harshbarger, eight years.
Briner also enjoys and recognizes
the importance of its own employees,
who organize and self-perform
the work at the company.
“Besides customer relationships,
our employees are our No. 1 asset,”
says Swinford. “You’ve got to have
committed employees you can
trust to take ownership and who
are passionate about their work.”
“We also have a long-term and
skilled employee base,” says Chris
Elser. “Typically when we hire a
new employee, they stay with us
for most, if not all, of their working
career. We try to treat our employees
as we want to be treated.”
“Our shared belief is, ‘Relationship,
Trust and Performance,’ ” says
Swinford. “Briner has lived

hirty-five years ago, John
Souder agreed to design a
poster as a favor to a friend.
He drew an illustration of a
vintage car, had it transferred
to a silkscreen for reproduction
and moved on to the next
project. He didn’t even sign
his name. Little did he know
that his illustration would
mark the beginning of a long
relationship with the Auburn
Cord Duesenberg Festival.
“After I did one,” chuckles
Souder, “it just kept going. I couldn’t

Since designing that first poster,
Souder has gradually added to his
output for the festival. Today, he also
designs all its “extra stuff,” as he
calls it—badges, bumper stickers,
flags, t-shirts, collector plates and
any other collateral material that
helps promote the weeklong event.

came naturally to Souder, an Auburn
native whose love of art and design
runs deep. He studied art at the
American Academy of Art in Chicago
and came back to Fort Wayne to
work for Channel 15. He was then
drafted into the army and used his
training in graphic arts/illustration
there as well. After the army, he
once again returned to Channel
15 for a short period of time.
From there, Souder completely
changed genre and spent the next
40 years working as graphic art
director for a local paint and décor
industry. His second job, back then,
consisted of working for a Fort
Wayne area advertising agency. To
this day, he is still doing freelance
work for the agency. “I’ve done
this my whole life,” says Souder. “I
even designed my school annual.”
Souder has seen many changes
along the way, particularly with
the introduction of computers
to his field. When he designs a

a hand-drawn illustration, but the
process no longer involves silk

his drawing to a photographer
who captures the image in high
resolution digital format. Souder
then loads the full-color file into
the computer, where he can make
adjustments and enhancement
changes. The final file is then able
to be replicated in a multitude of
formats, making production easier.
He starts planning a year in
advance of each festival when he
receives the upcoming year’s theme
from the ACD Club. He then collects
pictures, does research online and
takes photos of the car. According to
his wife, Shirley, “He spends a lot of
time thinking and doing drafts. He
asks for my opinion which is fun and
through our discussions he always
comes up with an amazing finish.”

worked at Channel 15 and they’ve

DeKalb Health has undergone a $2 million project to renovate its hospital interior.
A Higher Standard of Care
DeKalb Health has all-private rooms providing optimal patient experiences in our community.
ver the past year, the
face of DeKalb Health has
changed a great deal. The
opening of our North
Campus this spring altered
the exterior landscape of our
campus in a major way. Later
this fall, upgrades to the hospital’s
interior care spaces will also debut.
For the first time in the hospital’s
50-year history, all patients will enjoy
private rooms during their stay at
DeKalb Health. This is a significant
change for our hospital and one that
brings DeKalb Health another step
closer to its goal of being a modern
healthcare destination for recovery and
wellness, both inside and out.
These interior updates are one of the
major, and perhaps most important,
pieces of our facility modernization
efforts. As a community health center,
we understand that, to provide the best
care, our hospital and other wellness
environments need to not only offer the
most advanced equipment, technology
and clinical resources, they also need
to be aesthetically designed to nurture
healing in a comfortable and tranquil
space. These cosmetic improvements

TIME, TALENT,
& TREASURE.
As a company, we believe it’s important to give back to the communities where
we live and work. That’s why SDI supports a wide range of endeavors that benefit
everyone in northeast Indiana. From education to the arts, from the work of
nonprofits to special events that promote tourism — we share our resources with
a goal of making our communities better places to live.
And our employees have whole-heartedly embraced this philosophy. They
regularly share the fruits of their labor through donations to charitable
organizations, and volunteering their time, they roll up their sleeves to work on
special projects that enhance the lives of others in their communities.
Good people — sharing their time, talent, and treasure — serve to make our
communities stronger.

DeKalb County Courthouse
article by John Bry, DeKalb County Historian • photography by Jeffrey Crane

eginning with the Eckhart
Public Library in 1910,
DeKalb County would
witness a boom of civic
building projects over
the next two decades.
Schools, churches,
a YMCA, city halls,
mausoleums, libraries, post
offices, hotels, factory buildings
and the DeKalb County Courthouse
were all created during this age
of growing wealth in the county.
The beauty of these buildings
was key. DeKalb County and much
of the nation were interested in
the “City Beautiful Movement”—
the idea that form, function and
aesthetics could all work in harmony
to create a vibrant healthy and
attractive community in which
people would want to live and work.
However, it was halted by the Great

Depression, and the death
or relocation of some of
the county’s most beloved
benefactors and leaders.
The “City Beautiful
Movement” has come around
again 100 years later as
communities work to breathe
new life into buildings,
neighborhoods and downtowns
later generations neglected or
areas that suffered at the hands of
shifting economic markets. These
landmarks define our landscape and
can still be made functional if the
will and skill to do so are present.
It is fitting to observe that 2014
marked the 100 th anniversary
of the official completion of the
DeKalb County Courthouse. Of all
the buildings completed during
the construction frenzy that
would grip DeKalb County in the

early 20 th century, it is this iconic
structure that perhaps symbolizes
the county in so many unspoken
ways. It is the fourth structure to
house the county offices, replacing
a wood and brick structure on
the same site of the square.
The present courthouse was
conceived in 1909 out of the idea
that the previous building was a fire
risk. Local political cartoons of the
day showed the former courthouse
going up in smoke and the county

saying, “I told you so” as the flames
engulfed the old courthouse’s tower.
It was an overly dramatic ploy to
gain the favor of the citizens of the
county to spend the money for a
new courthouse
which some dubbed
an unnecessary
“extravagant
public square
beautification
project for Auburn.”
Citizens were
concerned that
officials wouldn’t
keep the budget for
the courthouse in
check at $250,000
allocated. They
would be correct
as the final cost for
the building and its
furnishings totaled
over $300,000.
A timely decision
was made concerning
the design of the
building; clock
faces would be
added to each gable
located over the four
entrances. Citizens
were originally
told no such clock
would be added to the building as
it had not been in the budget to do
so. Commissioners allocated an
additional $2,288 for the brass Hahl
Master Clock seen in the lobby
today. The master clock controls
the time for all of the original clocks
inside and outside the courthouse.
This brass master clock on the
first floor of the courthouse
originally controlled the outdoor
clocks and individual clocks in
each office and courtroom by
means of pneumatic tubes.
Peru, Indianabased contractor
J.W. Goodall stated the courthouse
would be placed into service and
dedicated by September of 1912,
but it was not to be. Delays in
materials and cost overruns left
the steel-framed building naked
as derricks rose above its steel
frame for lack of stone. This forced
Goodall and his men to find other
work to keep them occupied such as
the construction of a utility tunnel.
36 All Things Auburn
In February of 1912, a large toot at
noon blared from the hoisting engine
to let the community know work
had resumed on the courthouse
after the building had virtually
come to a standstill
for several months.
Trestles were hoisted
to the second floor
where they would
await placement on
the roof. Forms began
to give way to reveal
the cement pillars
that support the
structure yet today.
Despite the magnificent
courthouse inspiring awe in the
citizenry, the building still had
its share of critics following its
completion. The editors of the Butler
Weekly Record were particularly
not fond of the building’s cost,
but in the end admitted DeKalb
County got a finer building than
our neighbors in Allen County for
the money. They were also pleased
elected officials took their advice
and had half the courthouse paid
off by the time its doors officially
opened for business. They hailed
the courtroom “fit for a king to
sit in” but still thought the money
expended on that room’s decoration
could have been better expended
for “the education of mankind.”
The Butler Weekly Record went on
to say, “We are pretty well pleased
with the job. Our original kicking
about expense was really done
for the purpose of helping to keep
officials within reasonable limits.”
No matter where our ancestors
stood on the question of a new
courthouse in DeKalb County, they
left us a magnificent gift and legacy
we could not imagine life without
100 years later. Here’s to hoping
future generations and citizens will
continue to honor and admire the
vision, commitment and landmark
achievement manifested through
the DeKalb County Courthouse

John Souder and Sarah Payne
Each year I struggle to find the words to appropriately thank our sponsors,
advertisers, supporters and volunteers who make the annual Auburn Cord
Duesenberg Festival a reality. It is no exaggeration to say that without them
it simply would not be possible to welcome the world to our charming little
piece of Indiana. It still amazes me that each year Auburn can host visitors
from all over the world and has been doing so for close to 60 years!
This year I want to thank one particular volunteer in a very special
way. John Souder has been helping us to invite visitors to our
celebration through his beautiful artwork for 35 years in 2015. I’m
fortunate enough to have gotten to know John personally over the
last couple of years and I can say without a doubt that his kindness
and generosity surpass his talent….and that’s saying something!
I’m reminded of this inspiring quote by Winston Churchill that states,
“We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we
give.” John, my friend, what a life! I thank you for your talents, your
time, your generosity and your friendship. You are a treasure! Sarah Payne - Executive Director of the ACD Festival
THANK YOU!
