DAY ONE
Noon

The Georgia Music Hall of Fame features legendary performers like
Little Richard, The Allman Brothers, and Ray Charles. From the soul
stirring Gospel Chapel to the kid friendly M usic Factory you’ll be

The Tubman African American Museum offers impressive galleries that
showcase historically significant achievements of African American
inventors, military leaders, artists, musicians, writers and heroes.
Hay House, an 1860 Italian Renaissance Revival mansion featured on

Visit Sidney Lanier Cottage, the 1834 birthplace of the Poet of the Old
South.
Struck by a cannonball during the Federal attack on Macon in 1864, the
Cannonball House features period furnishings and the two-stor y brick
structure that housed the original kitchen.
St. Joseph Catholic Church crowns downtown with 200-ft. spires and
stunning stained glass windows, reminiscent of great European
Cathedrals.
Wrap up your enchanted evening with a scenic drive or a leisurely stroll
through Macon’s intown illumination tour. Lights on Macon showcases
many public and private mansions, each dramatically lit in a fr ee nightly
display of Southern elegance and grandeur.
DAY TWO
Morning
Follow tribal drumbeats and take a short drive to the sacred Ocmulgee
National Monument. Step inside an authentic Indian mound and see over
12,000 years of Native American culture. On the way, see the reconstructed
1806 blockhouse of Macon’s founding frontier, Fort Hawkins.
Noon
Stop for lunch at one of M acon’s famous southern style restaurants. Then
use your attractions ticket to work off some of that soul food at the
Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. An emotion packed film leads y ou into an
exhibit hall and interactive area, complete with racing simulator,
basketball hoops and football goals.

Next, skip a beat across the street to the historic Douglass Theatre, where
Otis Redding was first discovered. Wrap up the day with a stop at
Gateway Park, where you can reflect on your experiences with Otis
Redding’s life-size statue.

restaurants. Catch a performance at Theatre Macon or the Macon Little
Theatre. Watch a show at the restored Cox Capitol Theatre or listen to
live music at one of many nightclubs.
DAY THREE
Venture out to hidden gems like the Museum of Arts and Sciences,
where kids of all ages can dig for fossils or gaz e at the stars in a fantastic
planetarium. Lake Tobesofkee, Ocmulgee Heritage Trail, Ocmulgee
Expeditions, and several golf and tennis courses offer gr eat recreational
opportunities.
Shop until you drop. Window shop or be drawn into quaint do wntown
boutiques, neighborhood antiques villages, and eclectic ar t galleries.
Macon Mall features 200 stores including Macy’s, Belk, Sears and
JCPenney. The Shoppes at River Crossing off of I-75 is a beautiful ne w
lifestyle center for upscale shopping. Eisenhower Crossing, close to
I-475, features lots of favorite national chains.

simulator in the country’s largest state sports hall of fame. Get to know

Saturday talent show week after week in this historic African American

Journey to the ancient past to disco ver 12,000 years of native American
Indian heritage just across the river. Enter the continent’s only reconstructed

7. Rose Hill Cemetery

Established in 1840, Rose Hill remains one of the oldest sur viving public
cemetery parks in the U.S. It is also the final r esting place of famous
musicians, Georgia governors and Civil War soldiers.

8. Riverside Cemetery

Established in 1887 as a priv ate cemetery located above the Ocmulgee
River, this cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places
and is the final resting place for more than 17,000 people, including

9. Hay House

Feel like royalty when you step through the doors of this National
Historic Landmark mansion. News accounts called it the “Palace of the
South” upon its completion in 1859. M agnificent detail and luxuries far
ahead of their time make this a must-see, as featur ed on A&E’s “America’s

10. Cannonball House

Step inside this classic Greek Revival mansion built in 1853, the only
house in Macon damaged when struck by a cannonball during a Federal
attack in 1864. Restored with period furnishings, it houses a Civil War
museum and recreated meeting rooms of the world’s first secret societies
for women, Alpha Delta Pi and Phi Mu sororities. Museum shop.

11. St. Joseph Catholic Church

The side door is open to the public daily fr om 9am–4pm
Reminiscent of European cathedrals, this Romanesque, Neo-Gothic style
church was dedicated in 1903. C ross-topped twin spires rise over 200
feet. Bavarian stained glass, Italian marble carvings, beautiful statues and
sacred altars create an awe-inspiring site.

15. The Garden Club Center

This four story, 1910 English Tudor home was designed by the renowned
architect Neel Reid. It became the headquarters of the Federated Garden
Clubs of Macon, Inc. in 1957.
12. Sidney Lanier Cottage

Tour the nationally registered cottage that is the 1842 bir thplace of
Sidney Lanier, famous poet and musician of the O ld South and see his
writings, flute, even his bride’s tiny wedding gown.

Legendary musician Otis Redding is memorialized in a life size statue at
beautiful Gateway Park, trailhead of the Ocmulgee River Heritage Trail.
Sit with him on the dock, hum y our favorite Otis tune, picnic on the
grassy hillside overlooking the river or drop a line for the catch of the day .

19. Fort Hawkins

Considered Macon’s birthplace, Fort Hawkins was established in 1806 b y
President Thomas Jefferson. The fort played a strategic role as the
“Pentagon of the South” in the War of 1812. A replica of the
Southeastern Blockhouse is open to the public on special occasions.

Allman to write the classic “P lease Call Home.”

Take I-75 to I-16. Exit 2 at
Martin Luther King Jr.
Blvd./Coliseum Dr. Turn onto
MLK/US 80 W, crossing the
Ocmulgee River. After the 4th
traffic light, you will see the
Visitors Center on your left, with
the piano keyboard across the front of the building. Turn left at
the next traffic light onto Poplar, and follow the blue signs into
the visitors center parking lot. Open Mon–Sat 9am–5pm.
I-75 Visitors Center
If you’re traveling south on I-75, you’ll find the Macon Visitors
Center located nine miles south of F orsyth, Georgia, at mile
marker 179. It is open seven days a week from 9am–5pm.
