Dear Fellow Club Members
There has been a date change for working
with the Big Brothers program. The date is
now scheduled for September 9th. We will
need several volunteers to help with this
program. We have been asked to help
with a scouting program in October. More
information will be available at a later date
on this project. I encourage everyone to
attend the August 3rd meeting. We have guest speaker Paul Sodamann who is
an expert on Kansas big game fly fishing. See page 3
The board has started planning the fall picnic and the winter program. The picnic
will be after trout season starts and will be at Sedgwick County Park.

Paul Sodamann to speak at the August Meeting
The September fly swap will be Lake Taneycomo
Flies.
September 2006 will be the club fly swap. We encourage all
members to participate so we have well-rounded examples of
flies.
Lake Taneycomo is located in the Branson, Missouri area. Lake
Taneycomo was created in 1913 as a warm water lake and in
1958 became a cold-water lake when the Table Rock Dam was
completed. The cold waters of Lake Taneycomo provide some
of the finest trout fishing anywhere in the world. All methods
of trout fishing: fly-fishing, artificial bait, and live bait fishing
may be used year-round.
Lake Taneycomo has the characteristics of both a river and a
lake for anglers to enjoy. The shallow colder water, located near
the Table Rock Dam, averages 48 degrees F, resembles a river
and permits wading and bank fishing for trout. Lake
Taneycomo also offers a variety of recreational activities
including hiking, sightseeing, hunting, swimming, boating, and
other water activities.
Lake Taneycomo’s cold waters provide excellent fishing for
trout. The fishing conditions change almost hourly due to the
water flow. Excellent fishing is available throughout the lake as
long as the angler is willing to make the adjustments needed.
WARNING: On Lake Taneycomo near the headwaters a horn
sounds loudly when water is going to be released from the
dam. It is dangerous to be in portions of the lake at that time.
Suggested flies for Lake Taneycomo are:
Small scuds and sowbug patterns size 16 or smaller
Small copper bodied flies, like Brassies, copper-johns, ultra wire
midge nymph
Soft hackle wet flies, size 16
Surface flies, dark colored midge dry, small adams, blue wing
olive #20

Last summer I was introduced to fly fishing for carp and

was immediately hooked. This year, however, it’s been a
challenge to convince anyone to make an outing to target
these brutes. My ‘itch’ for catching any true ‘Big Game’
species has recently been scratched though. I decided
that if I wasn’t going to travel long distances to
experience reel screaming runs, I’d better start looking
close to home. I concocted a pattern I call ‘Big Hare’,
by checking out other proven carp flies and scouted out
a likely stretch of the Arkansas River. Here are some
pictures of the fish I landed on my first 2 ½ hour
adventure!

Since the Fourth of July was on a Tuesday
this year it seemed reasonable to make a
quick three or four day fishing trip
somewhere and take advantage of the
midweek day off. Once a week, usually
on Thursday, I sneak a look at the
outdoor pages on the Denver Post
website. A year ago there were a couple
of articles about the Conejos River in
southern Colorado. Both columns praised
the virtues of this river, its relative
isolation, the lack of fishermen, its rugged
scenery, and a large population of trout.
Although I had fished the river before it
was over twenty years ago and I have
long wanted to go back. Last winter I
started priming my usual Colorado fishing
partner Curt with a glowing summary of those two
newspaper articles. My brainwashing must have worked
because about a month before the Fourth he called the
fly shop/cabins highlighted in the paper and made a cabin
reservation. We planned to drive out on Wednesday, fish
for three days and then head home on Sunday morning.
After the long ten hour drive we were rewarded with a
clean and comfortable place to stay and a fly shop
owner/fishing guide who dispensed information in a
slightly guarded way that we came to appreciate over the
next three days. Jon Harp, the owner of Conejos
River Anglers doesn’t tell you exactly where to fish but
rather gives direction through a series of suggestions.
This method leaves room for discovery and sometimes
makes it feel as though you figured it out on your own.
Curt and I have talked about this experience before and
I don’t know what to call it. I guess it could be called
fishing karma, or serendipity, or maybe its just
accidental fishing. Perseverance is a more likely answer.
Perhaps as you get older and the fishing trips start to
blur a sense of adventure seems almost as important as
the actual fishing. Whatever it is that I am trying to
describe, this trip mixed just the right amount of fishing
highs and lows.
