Monaco Red Cross Gala - the Monte
PRESS KIT SUMMARY The Monaco Red Cross humanitarian organisation The 66th Monaco Red Cross Gala 2014 Tombola The Gala’s artistic program Diana Krall Freshlyground The Sporting Summer Band featuring Justin Caldwell & Erin McCarley The work of art donated to the Monaco Red Cross, created by Mateo Mornar The history of the Monaco Red Cross Useful information The Monaco Red Cross Humanitarian organisation Founded in 1948 by Prince Louis II, the Monaco Red Cross is recognised the same year by the International Red Cross Comity and was admitted to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Encouraged and backed by the convictions and deep commitments of its President, H.S.H. Prince Albert II, the Monaco Red Cross, constantly focusing on other human beings, intends to pursue its dynamism and observance of its humanitarian ideals. It is also presided by H.S.H. Prince Albert II and composed of a board of 13 to 15 members appointed for three years by sovereign order. In respect of the Red Cross’ seven fundamental principles (humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality), the Executive Committee, a smaller body, ensures the proper functioning of Society. In addition to the President, it includes the VicePresident Mrs Rosine Sanmori, General Secretary Mr Philippe Narmino, and the General Treasurer Mrs Bettina Ragazzoni. Once a year, the General Assembly, the Legislative Corp. brings together the members of the Board of Directors, the heads of 11 sections and services, and delegates representing the volunteers (one representative for 15 volunteers). International aid programs and missions In the year 2013, it had to increase the number of its international aid programs and missions, to which it devoted over €970,000. In response to appeals from the International Red Cross Committee (I.R.C.C.), the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, many of its activities were carried out in extremely urgent conditions: in the Philippines at the end of 2013, following the ravages of the devastating typhoon Haiyan, in the Republic of Niger, in Tunisia, dealing with food shortages due to long periods of drought, and more recently in the Balkans, where several regions in Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia have suffered from dramatic floods. On each occasion, private donations, contributed spontaneously, have been added to the funding of rapid and efficient mobilization. In addition to these actions, and without abandoning activities initiated over the past few years, whose follow-up requires considerable budgets and rigorousness, the Monaco Red Cross continues to participate in large-scale projects. In Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast, for example, a program has just been set up aiming to ensure sustainable improvement of living conditions for people settled near mining sites. In Monaco and its surrounding area, reasons for taking action are certainly not lacking… This year, over 500 volunteers and unpaid contributors put in 36,000 hours of their presence and work to support activities undertaken by the Social Service, help out in retirement homes, hospital departments, school establishments, to train first-aid workers, organize and run the great annual sale, and many other discreet but vital activities. Follow Monaco Red Cross The 66th Monaco Red Cross Gala In the Presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, President of the Monaco Red Cross and H.S.H. Princess Charlene, the 66th Monaco Red Cross Gala will be held at the Sporting MonteCarlo, which celebrates its 40 years of creating a legend. For the humanitarian organization with fundamental principles and large-scale missions, it is the opportunity to thank the generosity of each volunteer and donor, whose commitment and trust allow grasping the importance of its heavy task around the world . Encouraged by the commitments and deep personal convictions of its President, H.S.H Prince Albert II, the Monaco Red Cross, perpetually turned towards helping others, remains dynamic in its respect of its humanitarian and universal ideal. In this idea, the Monaco Red Cross Gala offers moments of sharing, unity and togetherness in an exceptional ephemeral setting. To maintain perfect harmony with the Monaco Red Cross’ image, Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer teams have imagined and created a minimalist decor in red and white tones. Fully dressed in white, the legendary Salle des Etoiles will be decorated with rounded screens on which the various highlights of the evening will be projected. Mirror tables and the monochrome red table cloth covered by an elegant floral frieze will be decorated with freshly cut flowers composed of 6000 Harlequin roses and 4500 hydrangeas balls, symbolizing both unity and universality. Dedicated, Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer has created a 2014 decor that is simultaneously sober, captivating and refined. A ballet of 200 people is moving around the 800 guests. In the ballroom and in the kitchen, the very top of the range service makes irreproachable by choreography of technical, precise and imperceptible movements. prestigious products are sublimated and compose a menu with sophisticated dishes of exception, such the Steamed artichoke and black truffles with vinaigrette, stuffed with duck «foie gras» or the Sublime raspberry and yuzu cream surprise, black fig marmalade and Matcha tea sponge-cake. This year, Sandrine Quétier – dressed in Haute Couture house Akris – will present the Gala and host the Tombola with outstanding musician, composer and producer Marcus Miller, named « UNESCO Artist for Peace » and spokesperson for « The Slave Route » project. The evening promises to be rhythmic and unforgettable, thanks to the presence of exceptional artists, selected and invited by Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer’s Artistic Direction. Zhang Zhang Band will greet guests. The Gala is honoured to welcome as an opening act South African group Freshlyground, one of the greatest achievements of South African crossover music who will perform its greatest hits composed of original sounds blending afro and soul, supported by the incredible voice of singer Zolani Maholà. Then, the undisputed star of female vocal jazz, Diana Krall, will open the Ball. The sultry pianist and singer will interpret with her natural sensuality some of the greatest hits of Jazz. After the majestic fireworks display, favouring silver, red and white, The Sporting Summer Band featuring Justin Caldwell & Erin McCarley will extend the evening to the beat of dance music. The Gala’s artistic program Diana Krall This year, the Gala has the pleasure of welcoming sultry Jazz star: Diana Krall. Diana Jean Krall was born on November 16th 1964 in Nanaimo, Canada, in a family of musicians. As a child, Diana learns to appreciate jazz classics such as Nat King Cole or Fats Waller, but also Frank Sinatra and Opera. She began playing the piano at the age of four. In 1993, Diana records her first American album, 'Stepping Out', in collaboration with jazzmen John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton. In 1995 her second album, "Only Trust Your Heart", produced by Ray Brown and several other renowned jazzmen makes her a household name. With her thirds album, « All of You », a tribute to Nat King Cole, the singer is rewarded for her talent: she is nominated for a Grammy and remains on the most sold jazz list for seventy weeks. Singer of talent and charm, recognized for her ability to breathe new life into jazz classics, Diana Krall also stands out by her ability to surround herself by world-class musicians. Thus, she collaborated with guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Christian McBride for her fourth album, 'Love Scenes'. In 1999, Diana Krall reaches the pinnacle of fame with “When I Look in Your Eyes", which wins the Grammy Award in the category "album of the year ". She strengthens her American singer star status the following year, touring with living legend, Tony Bennett. In 2003, she marries Elvis Costello who encourages her to write her own songs. In 2004 she releases her first original album, « The Girl in the Other Room ». The same year, she has the honour to sing a duet with Ray Charles on the song «You Don't Know Me », on is last album, « Genius Loves Company ». Her last opus Glad Rag Doll (2012), revisits old hits from the 20’s and 30’s, beside country and blues songs. Follow Diana Krall www.dianakrall.com The Gala’s artistic program Freshlyground Freshlyground formed in early 2002, and is made up of seven talented and diverse musicians from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Fronted by the diminutive but dynamic Zolani Mahola, the band exudes a live performance energy that has been the bedrock of their success. The experienced rhythm section of Peter Cohen (drums) & Josh Hawks (bass) is complimented by guitarist Julio Sigauque, keyboardist Seredeal Scheepers, Simon Attwell (flute, mbira, sax and harmonica) and violinist Kyla Rose Smith. Although hailing from diverse backgrounds, between them the band’s members weave a musical magic that is highly infectious and undeniably groovy. In 2003 Freshlyground launched their debut album, Jika Jika under their own Freeground Records label, the immediate success of which firmly cemented the band as one of South Africa’s most successful young acts. Freshlyground released their second studio album Nomvula in July 2004. Nomvula was recorded and produced by JB Arthur and Sibusiso Victor Masondo. The album sparked interest from Sony BMG Africa, who signed the band and released Nomvula in September that year. Radio quickly picked up on the single ‘Doo Be Doo’ and the catchy song went on to become a crossover favorite amongst a diverse spread of stations and their listeners. ‘Doo Be Doo’ was the most played song in South Africa in 2005. The major success of ‘Doo Be Doo’ was followed by the singles ‘I’d Like’, ‘Zithande’, ‘Things Have Changed’ and the title track of the album ‘Nomvula’. The album sold 300 000 units in South Africa alone - earning it multi-platinum status. The success and broad appeal of the band was celebrated in November 2006 when Freshlyground won the MTV Europe Award in the category Best African Act. The award placed the band firmly on the international music map and earned them further recognition on home soil as significant South African cultural exports. The success of Nomvula was followed by that of Ma Cheri - Freshlyground’s third studio album, released in September 2007. The album’s release was followed by a major South African tour attended by over 25 000 people across four cities. The tour was produced by Freshlyground and supported by Volkswagen South Africa. The tour successfully raised the performance and production standards of local touring, putting the band on par with international acts in terms of production scale and value. Ma Cheri sold multi-platinum in South Africa and the single Pot Belly became another major crossover success. In 2009 Freshlyground did four sold out tours in Europe. They also toured for the first time in China, the United States of America and Canada, making the band one of a handful of South African acts to have a successful and sustainable career both internationally and at home. With their already gold fourth studio album, ‘Radio Africa’, Freshlyground have broadcast their unique sound, a sound that has turned the seven-piece into one of South Africa’s most treasured acts, to the rest of the continent and the world. While putting the finishing touches to ‘Radio Africa’ in New York in February of 2010 the band was selected to co-perform in the Official Song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Entitled “Waka Waka - This Time for Africa” the song was featured on “Listen Up: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album™” and is a collaboration with Colombian superstar, Shakira. Freshlyground performed Waka Waka live at the FIFA Kickoff Concert and at the World Cup closing ceremony in Johannesburg which was broadcast to over a billion people worldwide. To date “Waka Waka” has sold well over 3 million singles and reached number #1 on several charts worldwide. The song is the most successful anthem in the history of the FIFA World Cup and has introduced Freshlyground and their music to a host of new fans across the globe. The band went back into studio in the winter of 2012 in the small Karoo town of Prince Albert. They worked with award winning studio engineer Dave Langemann and Grammy award winning producer Steve Berlin to record their fifth studio album, Take Me to the Dance. The band built a makeshift studio in a community theatre in the middle of the quiet Karoo town, and created a space where, says Peter Cohen “We pushed ourselves on many levels, and as a result the record is sonically far less predictable… our collaboration with DJ Headroom on the title track Take Me To The Dance displays the band’s flexibility within genres. Freshlyground have always allowed them wide latitude in terms of style-hopping, and I think this album achieves that more successfully than all the others.” In 2013 the band released Take me To the Dance in the United States on the Word of Mouth label, this was followed by a US tour which included a show at the prestigious New York venue, The Apollo. The release of the album was immediately followed by a rave review on the popular NPR show, All Things Considered and topped the North American ITunes World Music chart. During the US tour the band were honoured with a Next Generation award by Shared Interest, alongside Harry Belafonte, for their philanthropic work with the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation. On a recent visit to South Africa in June 2013 during a speech at the University of Cape Town, President Barack Obama cited Freshlyground as an example of what South Africa has given the world. For the 66th Edition of the Monaco Red Cross Gala, artist and humanist sculptor Mateo Mornar has created "Gaia". « Gaïa » Wood and plastic painted sculpture Signed and dated 2014 162 x 44 x 149 cm “Mother goddess in Greek mythology, Gaia, fertilizing power or goddess of home, nature and harvest, personifies the Earth as a living being. She is the maternal ancestor of the divine races, and brings forth many creatures” - said Mateo Monar. “Creating « my » Gaïa was inspired to me by the treasures of love and altruism that the Monaco Red Cross deploys in Monaco and in distant countries alike, to soften the daily lives of the less fortunate. Benevolent and appeasing, Gaïa opens her arms wide, in a gesture of love and generosity”. The artwork will be on display in the Sporting Monte-Carlo hall during the Monaco Red Cross Gala. About Mateo Mornar Born in Croatia, on December 20th 1946, Mateo Mornar arrives in France with his parents at the age of 10 where he continued his schooling. At 18, he entered the ESAM (School of modern art) in Paris where he learned the techniques of sculpture, graphics arts and decoration. For 20 years, he works in graphic design and decoration, while sculpting for himself. In 1990, he believes to have found sufficient artistic maturity and decides to devote himself entirely to sculpture. He began to exhibit in his region (Nice, Monaco, Cannes...) and then notoriety expanded his reach to foreign and large capitals (Paris, Zurich, New York...). In 1997, he opens a sculpture school, expressing a desire to teach the difficult art of sculpture to students of all ages, hoping to spark possible future vocations. Always looking for new forms and techniques and having worked for years the rounded figure of fulfilled women, he is currently developing cubic forms. With his talent as a sculptor sublimated after over 30 years of emotional struggle, Mateo Mornar becomes "Mornar", an artist whose guides in life are both passion and generosity. He supports the Prince Albert II Foundation for the protection of the environment, a foundation to which the sculptor donates 50% from the sale of his works. "Because if the path of humanity has often been strewn with injuries, the artist road is paved with faithful friends, and on this road of friendship, a Prince stretched out his hand by following his work very closely...” To own a work by "Mornar" is to own a part of beauty in the world, moments of sensuality, of joy, repeated into infinity.
