On Friday evening, August 19,
firefighters battled a blaze at a
three-story home at 1125 Barfield
Street. The home is owned by
John and Laurie Smalley of
Dayton, Ohio. No one was living
in the home at the time of the fire.
Neighbors said that the home is
sometimes occupied by renters
but that no one was renting the
home at the time of the fire.
Witnesses observed that
firefighters arrived at the home
shortly before 6 p.m. Deputy
Chief Mark Davis held a short
press conference at the scene at
approximately 6:45 p.m. and said
that the fire was under control.
Firefighters remained on site
for several hours – with the Fire
Department providing an update
via social media stating that at
8:13 p.m. firefighters were still at
the home putting out hot spots.
No citizens were injured during
the fire. A North Charleston firefighter was treated at the scene by
paramedics for a minor medical
issue.
Units from Charleston and
from N. Charleston Fire Departments responded to and were
battling the fire.
Deniz Evin, a neighbor living
across the street from the Smalley
home, said that shortly after he
arrived home from work on Friday afternoon his whole house lit
up from a lightning bolt and that
the smoke detectors in his home
started going off. About 25 minutes later he saw smoke coming
from the attic and gushing out the
vent of his neighbor’s home. He
immediately called 911 and said
firefighters arrived on the scene
pretty quickly after his call.
Deputy Chief Mark Davis gave
a statement at the scene at approximated 6:45 p.m., explaining
that firefighters had already been

dispatched for another lightning strike when
they saw the smoke in the sky above the area
of the fire. A Charleston Fire Department Facebook post noted, “Multiple calls were received
in the area following a storm and reported
lightning strikes. Fire crews were investigating
an adjacent area following a reported odor of
smoke when they observed the fire on Barfield
Street.”
The fire broke out during violent weather
with numerous lightning strikes being reported. Rob Fowler of Channel 2 Storm Tracker
said via social media that 272 lightning strikes
were recorded over Daniel Island shortly before the fire broke out on Barfield Street.
After completing an investigation on August
22, the Fire Department addressed the cause
via social media, “Fire Investigators worked
into the evening and the following day to
review the scene. Interviews confirmed significant lightning activity around the area and
significant lightning strikes several minutes
prior to the fire. Investigators gained access to
the structure the following day and reviewed
fire damage to the building. The fire originated
within a wall cavity and spread into the attic
space. The home was unoccupied and the fire
burned unchecked until smoke and fire were
visible from the roof. The cause of the fire is
likely related to the lightning strike that occurred in close proximity to the home.”

Neighbor Bill Powers said that the house
was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Powers, who lives across the
street from the Smalley home said, “The
heat on our front porch was unbelievable.”

the Daniel Island News Facebook page.
Ervin said that firefighters arrived on the
scene and went right in the front door to battle
the blaze. Powers’ video depicts the fire well
underway as well as hoses running into the
home and water being dumped from above

by a firetruck not visible
in the video. The Charleston Fire Department
confirmed that the roof area/attic was well
engulfed in fire upon the arrival of firefighters.
During the course of battling the fire,
firefighters rested on neighboring lawns and
porches. A crowd of residents watched as
the blaze was brought under control. Several
neighbors provided water and ice cold rags for
the fireman.
One fireman was assisted from the burning
home by fellow firefighters and received treatment on a neighboring porch.
Chief Fire Marshall Michael A. Julazadeh
emphasized the following via email: “The
importance of smoke alarms in the home
to alert occupants, when home, of the fire
incident; always call 911 if you see or smell
something unusual in the area; be sure to keep
your neighbors informed (if you plan to travel,
etc.) and leave contact information in the event
of an emergency.”
On Saturday, the day after the blaze, young
Elena and Lauren Evin and Avery Warren,
who live across the street from the damaged
home, set up a lemonade stand for three and
a half hours to support the firefighters that
helped protect them the night before. They
raised $137 and donated 100% to the firefighters.

Learning is a journey-not a destination. For most,
continuing education is essential in all aspects of
our culture so we can stay current amidst constantly
changing technology and have the knowledge to
move ahead. Children, youth, and adults have to
continue their pursuit of learning to advance in our
society. Kindergarten, primary, elementary, middle

continuing education. It never stops. The old song,
“School Days” taught to us by our parents, applies
to all:

DI Berkeley County Library described as
‘Field of Dreams’
In the August 24, 2006 issue of
the Daniel Island News, the feature
story was about the new Berkeley
County Library opening on Daniel
Island. Planned to open in January
2007, the 5,000 sq. ft. building was
meant to focus on lifelong learning.
According to Colleen Carney, the
Berkeley Country Library System Director at the
time, “[That includes] everything from preparation to learning to read in school, to seniors who
are taking classes, to adults doing research for
businesses, to entrepreneurs, and of course, for
recreational reading of all kinds…”
In Island Life, there was a showcase of pictures from the annual Hootie and the Blowfish
concert.
From the 8/24/06 issue:
In medical news, Dr. Charlie Turner wrote

FIVE YEARS AGO
Plan puts DI in
First Congressional District
In the August 25, 2011 issue of the
Daniel Island News, it was reported
that a redistricting plan passed by the
South Carolina House and Senate, and
signed by Governor Nikki Haley, was
approved by the United States Justice
Department, which would affect Daniel Island and most of the Clements
Ferry Road corridor. As proposed,
the island and much of the surrounding Cainhoy area would move from
the 6th Congressional District to the
1st Congressional District, territory
covered by Rep. Tim Scott (R). “I’m
truly excited about the opportunity
to earn the right to represent folks
on Daniel Island,” said Scott, who
recalled working with island residents
about 15 years prior during his time
on Charleston County Council, when
he and his fellow council members
tried to determine how to establish the
newly developing Daniel Island community as a part of Charleston County
(Daniel Island ultimately became part
of Berkeley County).
From the 8/25/11 issue: Legislative work on developing a redistricting plan
began earlier this year, after 2010 Census results showed the state’s population
grew by more than 600,000 people over the previous decade. The 15.3 percent
surge, which brought the population total to 4.6 million, necessitated the addition
of a new, 7th congressional district.

DI Families: Meet the Jansen Family
Kate Maas
This week, we sat down with the Jansen
family of Pierce Street, one of the “pioneer”
families who bravely, but enthusiastically,
made the island their home when it was
a largely undeveloped frontier: empty,
dark, and full of mosquitoes…and lots of
promise. Meet Mark, an engineer in charge
of emergency response at Spawar; Cheryl,
a trainer at Pearson; Marissa, a senior at
Hanahan High School; Ellie, a freshman
at Hanahan High School; Nina, a seventh
grader at Daniel Island School; and Sully,
the family dog.
Where are you from originally?
Cheryl Jansen (CJ): Mark and I are
both from Charleston. Mark’s family has
been here going back a while, whereas my
parents came because of the Navy Base. We
both attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic
School followed by high school at Bishop
England when it was still downtown.
Although we knew of each other we really
didn’t get acquainted until we met at Cafe
99 downtown during Spoleto.
Mark Jansen (MJ): After we got married, we waited seven years before having

our first child, Marissa. You’ve got to grow
sea legs before you have kids.
CJ: And enjoy every moment.
Why did you/your family choose to
make Daniel Island your home?
MJ: We were in the process of building a
house in Hollywood (South Carolina), when
the word got out about this new “master
plan” for Daniel Island. My brother was an
engineer for SCE&G at the time who had
already surveyed the land. He called us to
say, “You’ve got to see this place!”
CJ: The plan included an elementary
school and Bishop England was going to
move here. We really liked the idea that our
children could go to school and play with
their friends after school in the neighborhood. Mark and I did not have that growing up because we didn’t go to the zoned
school.
MJ: This was around 2000 when there
were only about five houses in the front of
the Codner’s Ferry section along Daniel
Island Drive. As an intern for NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency)
back then, I had access to maps of the area.
We wanted to build near what is now Bellinger Island, but the development company
wasn’t ready to begin clearing the land back
there. Later, we got a call about available
houses. We moved to DI on Elfe Street,
one road east of Daniel Island Drive which
at that time stopped at Mazo Street, across
from (what is today) Center Park.
CJ: Every morning at around 6 a.m.,
we’d be awakened by gobbling noises.
About a dozen large wild turkeys were
wandering around. They were probably here

from the days when the Guggenheim family
owned the island and used it as a hunting
ground.
What attracted you to the neighborhood and the house you currently live in?
MJ: By the time our third child, Nina,
was on her way, we knew we needed a bigger house. At that time, around 2004, there
weren’t enough houses or lots available to
accommodate the rising tide of would-be
homeowners. The development company
put a lottery in place - interested buyers
often had to pay as much as $5,000 just for
a chance to bid.
CJ: Fortunately, through friends on the
island, we found a house on Pierce Street
and we sold our house on Elfe Street in a
few days. It was a miracle that we bought
and sold property here so fast. There
weren’t a lot of choices available. We just
needed a house with enough bedrooms for
us and each of our three kids - and a playroom. Of course, I love the open floor plan,
a design that’s kind of basic in all Daniel
Island homes.
What changes have you seen on Daniel
Island since you moved here?
MJ: The mosquito situation on the island
used to be really bad. The mosquitoes were

huge - and they were everywhere. You
couldn’t even go out of your house at times.
It was a big health concern. Now, Berkeley
and Charleston counties split the cost to
spray the island fairly regularly. Also, in the
early years, after the sun went down, it was
pitch dark all over the island because there
were no street lamps back then. It was a
little scary.
Do you have plans to move to any other
address/location on - or even off - Daniel
Island?
CJ: We do plan to stay, although we
might downsize to a smaller house once
everyone’s graduated high school and college. And our girls just assume that they’ll
eventually be moving back to Daniel Island
to start their own families.
What is your family’s favorite place to
hang out on the island?
MJ: Everyone in our family is so busy
now it’s hard to take advantage of the
events on the island. I guess we’ve kind of
taken life here for granted. We still do try
to at least go to the summer concert on the
Wando and the Concert at the Park.
CJ: We also love the Pumpkin Walk
every Halloween, especially making jack-o

lanterns at Pierce Park Pavilion with the
kids.
MJ: This summer, we got a chance to
really appreciate all that the island offers
when Cheryl’s cousins visited from New
Jersey for the Fourth of July holiday. Over
that long weekend, we had about twentyseven people in the house. We did a lot the
Fourth of July activities on the island - and
we had a blast. We’re planning to make the
family visit an annual tradition. You really
get to appreciate what we have on Daniel
Island all over again just taking it all in
through others’ eyes.
Nina Jansen (NJ): My favorite thing to
do on Daniel Island is hanging out with my
friends and being able to ride around on our
bike.
Ellie Jansen (EJ): And I love the holiday
events like the Pumpkin Walk.
(NJ): There’s a real sense of community
and security on Daniel Island.
(EJ): The whole neighborhood comes out
to help when someone is in need.
Do you ever take day trips/short weekend trips off the island?
MJ: Every summer, when the girls were
younger, we’d go to Disney World or gem
mining in the highlands of North Carolina.
Now that they’re older, we look forward to
hiking and swimming in Table Rock State
Park in Pickens, SC.
Does your family have any special
traditions?
CJ: Every Christmas, we make a point of
signing up for the gingerbread house decorating class at Trident Technical College’s
cooking school. We’ve been doing this for
years and we’ll continue as long as we can.
Do you prefer to cook meals at home or
eat out?
CJ: Mark and I attended some cooking
“boot camps” in Charleston- especially
arming to cook Asian cuisine. And we do
like to try new recipes at home, like shrimp
and grits.
island news 11
Do you have any favorite restaurants
on or off the island?
CJ: Wasabi. We could go there every
night. When we visited Tokyo two years
ago, we got to experience the traditional
Japanese meal.
What’s for dinner at the Jansen house
tonight?
Actually, we’re going to dinner at a
friend’s house tonight. But tomorrow, it’ll
probably be shrimp gumbo.
If you could describe your life on Daniel
Island in a few words, what would they be?
CJ: Community. Security…..
MJ: Life is good.

New high-end office and retail building in the works for DI
ELIZABETH BUSH
[email protected]
A new high end office, retail and residential building will
soon rise on the corner of River Landing Drive and Daniel’s
Landing Drive on Daniel Island. The 18,000 square foot space,
developed by S.L. Shaw & Associates, will sit on the other
side of the large pond behind the Simmons Park apartment
complex. Bridge Real Estate Advisors will serve as the leasing
agent for the property.
Named “Daniel’s Corner,” the structure will be a multiuse, Class A building featuring retail and office space on the
first level, office space on the second level, and two upscale
residential units on the third floor. According to Alan Blom,
Senior Advisor at Bridge Real Estate Advisors, the property
will offer top of the line finishes, private balconies, ample
parking, Charleston-inspired accents such as a brick floor and
gas lanterns, as well as “boutique” style décor.
“What we’ve found is that a lot of retail and office users
want a different type of property, a different feel,” said Blom.
“And they like this kind of boutique style instead of a traditional office building.”
The developer constructed a similar property at 125 River
Landing that was completed in 2015. That building is now fully occupied by a variety of businesses, including Momentum
Marketing, L2NL, Bridge Real Estate Advisors, Sauer Grapes,
Threshold Pediatrics, Barter Card, and Charleston Healthspan
Institute. The property filled up quickly, noted Blom, and he is
confident the new project will have similar success.

Crematory
Daniel Island Residents Ed and Ginger
Selby, recently joined J. Henry Stuhr Funeral
Chapels and Crematory as Advanced Planning
Directors. They assist folks who wish to plan
for their cremation or funeral before the time
of need.
Ed and Ginger both grew up in the funeral,
cremation, and cemetery business. Collectively, they have dedicated 63 years helping
families plan for the inevitable. Ed’s grandfather started a family cemetery business in Warren, Ohio and Ginger’s grandfather founded a
funeral business in Pickens, South Carolina.
According to the Selbys, pre-planning has
become more popular over the last couple of
decades. Today people want to plan for and be
in control of every part of their lives, including
their final arrangements.
They see individuals planning for many
different reasons. The main reasons are to
alleviate potential burdens on their family and
make sure their wishes are honored. In addition, some families choose to prepay to “lock
in” today’s prices.

BCSD responds to bussing concerns
expressed by PSES/PSMS parents
ELIZABETH BUSH
[email protected]
While there were relatively few
bumps reported in the first week
of school in the Berkeley County
School District (BCSD), things
didn’t go as smoothly when it came
to bus transportation for some students attending Philip Simmons Elementary School (PSES) and Philip
Simmons Middle School (PSMS).
Several PSES and PSMS parents
took to social media early in the
week to post their frustrations with
bus delays and overcrowding. One
Huger parent shared a video taken
by her middle school daughter on the
bus showing students standing in the
aisle while the bus was in motion. In
other cases, buses were late to stops
or showed up too early and missed
kids entirely. District officials reported to The Daniel Island News late
in the week that they were monitoring the routes each day in the PSES/
PSMS and Daniel Island School
areas, as well as countywide, and that
they had made changes to “improve
efficiency and maintain safety.”
“We have adjusted stop times and
assigned larger buses where necessary and when possible,” stated Wes
Fleming, BCSD Director of Transportation.
Fleming also sought to reassure
parents by reaching out to them in
response to their concerns. One parent posted a letter she received from
Fleming on the PS Parents Facebook
page.
“I assure you your voice is being
heard and actions are being taken to
remedy each and every issue at PSE/
PSM as well as the others schools
in Berkeley County,” wrote Fleming. “…Buses the first few days of
school are historically delayed due to
several factors. There are more cars
and traffic at all elementary schools
with parents dropping their students
off. The teachers and administrators
are extra cautious both morning and
afternoon with unloading and loading students to ensure they are on the
correct bus. In the cases where they
might end up on the wrong bus, that
bus has to return to the school with
the student.”
Most of the delays start to disappear after the first week or so of
school, added Fleming.
“With the added factor of being
new schools and new bus riders from
areas where we had no student riders
in the past, the last few days have
been challenging,” he continued,
referring to the first several days of
‘back to school’ week.
Although the district increased
driver salaries over the summer,
they are still short approximately 22
drivers, added Fleming. The district
also recently had two large classes of
drivers, from which they continue to
train and certify candidates at a rate
of about three per week.
“It is still a difficult job and
requires extensive training just to
complete the CDL portion, then they
must complete training to be certified
by the State Department of Education,” said Fleming.
Another class is scheduled for
September 26-29. Anyone interested
in becoming a bus driver for the
district can find employment information on the BCSD website (www.
bcsdschools.net). In the meantime,
the district will continue to assess
the bussing situation for PSES/
PSMS students and make changes as
needed. Fleming noted that he still
does not have an accurate count on
the number of students who will be
utilizing district transportation on an
on-going basis.
“We are still collecting data,”
added Fleming. “And that number
will change (this week). It historically rises in week two of school.”

former medic with the Fire Department of
New York’s Battalion 45, it began like any
other day.
“My alarm went off and that’s how I started off,”
recalled Mendola, who now resides on Daniel Island
with her husband, Michael, and their children.
But less than two hours after reporting for duty,
Mendola and her partner were urgently called to the
corner of West and Vesey Streets near the World Trade
Center.
“We got there eight minutes after the first plane hit
(the North Tower),” she added. “…We knew it was an
MCI, which is a mass casualty incident. And we knew
that having one ambulance wasn’t enough resources.”
Mendola and her partner quickly got to work at the
base of the South Tower, where a triage station had
been set up, tagging victims based on the severity of
their conditions. Patients were put on city buses to be
transported to area hospitals.

Just 17 minutes after the first building was hit, an
additional plane few into the South Tower, about 75
floors above where Mendola and her partner were
stationed.
“All you heard was this low hum,” she continued.
“And then just a smash and an explosion…My partner
heard it, too. He hit me and I kind of looked up, and he
said, ‘Run!’”
Once outside the building, they were separated. But
Mendola attempted to make it back to the scene to find
out if her partner was safe. In the process, someone
grabbed her and told her to flee the area. She doesn’t
know the identity of the man, but she credits him with
saving her life. Within moments, the South Tower collapsed.
“They teach you what impending doom might feel
like,” said Mendola. “I may have caught a glimpse of
that. When I started running, I thought, ‘Oh my God,
this is it!’”
“It was awful,” she continued, when remembering
the scenes she encountered. “What you saw on TV, the
magnitude of it was so much worse, just being there…
You couldn’t really capture what was happening.”

what I did.”
But organizers of the Charleston 9/11 Heroes Run
see Mendola’s contributions a little differently, and are
eager to spotlight the important role she and other first
responders played on that fateful day.
“With it being the 15th anniversary of 9/11, we
wanted to find someone who was there, on the ground,
and really try to feel the experience through them,”
added Faircloth, who said Mendola is the first 9/11
emergency responder to serve as a guest of honor at the
Charleston race. “Just to remind everyone that while
for the rest of the country 9/11 is just a one day remembrance anniversary, for the people that were there while
it was happening…it sticks with them every day. They
carry that burden every day…Having heard Laura’s
story personally, it’s a real honor to have the opportunity to be able to allow her to share her experience and
to show her that the community has not forgotten.”
Faircloth also pointed to Gist as another shining
example of what men and women in uniform selflessly
do on a daily basis when called to serve.
“We were just so touched by her story,” she said.
“She is a local hometown hero who faced a very difficult situation while on duty one night. Just the strength
and determination she displayed in fighting back,
through her recovery process, and her overwhelmingly

Bishops win first game at the
Class AAA level, top Christ Church
PHILIP M. BOWMAN
The Bishop England football team handed
Christ Church a rare loss Friday night, using
a formula very similar to the one that has
made the Bishops a Lower State power this
decade.
Quarterback Leo Albano rushed for 181
yards and three touchdowns to lead the visiting Bishops past the Cavaliers in the seasonopener for both teams.
All total, the Bishops churned for 451
yards on the ground to defeat Christ Church,
a team that is making the adjustment from
Class A to AA. The Bishops’ victory at Carson Stadium ended Christ Church’s 38-regular-season winning streak at home.
“I was pleased with the effort,” Bishop
England coach John Cantey said. “From a
logistical standpoint, the trip was a hassle.
We had to get off (Interstate) 26 because
there was an overturned truck. That made a
long trip even longer.”
The Bishops, playing in their first game at
the Class AAA level, topped the Cavaliers, a
team that has been dominant in the Upstate.
The Cavaliers won four straight state championships from 2012-15 and had a 55-game
winning streak that ended last year.
Albano added 80 yards passing with another TD in the air as the Bishops outgained
Christ Church 531-234. Running back Ian
Butler also had a big game for the Bishops,
with 97 yards on only five carries.
The Bishops trailed 21-14 entering the
final quarter, but that’s when Albano went to
work. He scored three TDs in the deciding
12 minutes. He raced 51 yards for a score.
He also scored on a pair of 3-yard runs in
the 4th quarter, including one that was set up
by a perfectly executed onside kick.
“We’ve been preaching to the kids that
our offense has the potential to wear down a
team,” Cantey said. “What we didn’t preach
or expect is the way Chris Church handled
us in the third quarter. “But our guys were
resilient when we needed it. They could
have packed it up, but we didn’t quit.”
The Bishops return to Cantey Stadium
Friday night to host West Ashley, one of the
better bigger schools in the Lowcountry.
West Ashley features one of the top running backs in the state in Dexter Freeman,
and is coming off a 46-14 victory over Colleton County.

Hanahan cruises in week 1,
will be tested in week 2
PHILIP M. BOWMAN
Week 1 of the high school football season
presented no worries for the Hanahan Hawks.
This week? Well, that’s an entirely different
scenario for coach Charlie Patterson and his
troops.
The Hawks trounced May River High 4713 Friday night at Wiley Knight Stadium. It
was the first game ever for May River, a new
school that is located in Bluffton.
This weekend’s opponent, Andrews, has
quite a bit more history. And Andrews already
has a victory this season. The Yellow Jackets
hammered Waccamaw 47-13 and host the
Hawks in Region 8-AAA game.
“They’ve got some big guys and some
good athletes,” Hanahan coach Charlie Patterson said of Andrews. “They have a power
running game, so we will be tested. This is a
quality opponent.”
Against May River, it was no contest
pretty much from the start. Hanahan’s Cooper
Dawson blocked a Sharks’ punt on their first
possession and it was more of the same the
rest of the way as the Hawks gained more
than 300 yards in the first half en route to a
31-0 lead.
“I think our kids were excited to play a
football game,” Patterson said. “We played a
fairly clean game. We didn’t have that many
penalties and the first team didn’t put the ball
on the ground. And, our quarterback (Victor
Colbert) completed 11 of 12. These are things
to build on.”
Running back Jerry Bailey scored on runs
of 23 and 1 yards while Colbert added touchdown passes to Malieck Anderson for 19
yards and Jamie Watson for 14 yards. Quincy
Mitchell also scored on a 4-yard run for the
Hawks, who are seeking yet another region
championship.
Hawks running back Shi Hart scored on a
4-yard run and defensive back Donald Vanderhorst returned an interception 56 yards for
a TD for Hanahan’s other TDs.
Luke Litwin kicked a 29-yard field goal for
the Hawks, who shone in all three phases of
the game: offense, defense, and special teams.
“This week will be a lot different,” Patterson said. “Last week, we faced a new program that was excited to play its first game.
Andrews has been there. We face a team with
a strong tradition.”

Given the unprecedented summer heat and
high water temperatures, the best fishing is
happening at the beginning of the incoming
tide. Ocean and harbor water temperatures
are a bit cooler than the water in the creeks.
So the incoming tide floods the creeks with
cooler water and stimulates Redfish and
Trout to eat. Unfortunately, (this week) the
incoming tide was late in the afternoon and
strong thunderstorms put a serious dent in
my fishing time.
In late August, Redfish and Trout have
shrimp on their minds. Over the past few
weeks, I have been learning to rig and fish
the new Z-Man EZ Shrimp. It is quickly
becoming one of my favorite lures. Of
course, nothing beats the real thing. So when
the weather actually allowed me to fish,
the EZ Shrimp and real (live) shrimp were
the way to go. I rigged the EZ Shrimp on
a 3/0 sixteenth ounce keel weighted hook.
This combination casts pretty well (on light
tackle) and sinks like a real shrimp. For the
live shrimp, I used a sixteenth ounce lead
head jig. This set-up was a bit of a challenge
to cast (even on light tackle) but the Trout
and Ladyfish sure liked it.
The most productive areas were marsh
points and creek mouths being swept by the
incoming tide. Casting an EZ Shrimp (or
live one) into the area and letting it drift with
the tide was highly effective. If you want

a good 7-foot light action rod. My favorite
rod (for casting light lures and baits) is a St.

for saltwater species but casts lighter lures
extremely well.
In August, thunderstorms and shrimp are a
big part of the fishing scene. Don’t fish during a thunderstorm or without a shrimp!

The Daniel Inshore Fishing Club officially
donated a fishing statue to the Daniel Island
Property Owners Association on Friday, August
19, at a ceremony held on Seven Farms Drive at
the pond near the tennis stadium.
The club noted in a press release that “one
of the many attractions of Daniel Island are
the wonderful fishing waters that surround the
Island as well as its interior fresh water ponds.
These fishing waters offer the opportunity for
families to fish together, making memories and
forming bonds between children and adults that
will continue for years. The Family Fishing
Statue represents such a moment in the lives of
a little girl and boy.”
Active fishing club member and chairman of
the KIDS Fishing Tournament Fred Danziger

Erin Branham and
Joe Gough
DI residents
It’s that time of year when many of us have
children heading back to school or college.
As parents, we want to get off to a good start
and are focused on supporting our children’s
academics, school activities, and keeping the
new calendar items organized. In the midst
of the business that is life for most of us, our
personal health and fitness often gets put on the
backburner. But are we happy with our current
level of physical activity? Or do we have a goal
to improve...starting now!?
We - Erin Branham (or “Bear” nickname to
her FiA tribe) and Joe Gough (or “Hotwire”
nickname to his F3 peers) - want to make DI
adult residents aware of an opportunity that’s
free, rewarding, and perhaps the boost of support and friendship you need to jump start your
fitness this fall. Females in Action (FiA) for
women and F3 (Fitness, Fellowship and Faith)
for men are peer-led outdoor workout groups
that meet in the mornings several times a week
at Governor’s Park (rain or shine). The groups
participate in boot-camp style workouts (core
and leg exercises, moderate intervals of jogging, push-ups, jumping jacks, etc). Each workout is different, as a member of the group (e.g.,
perhaps your neighbor) selects the exercises the
group will do for a 45/50 minute workout. All
levels of fitness are welcome and the exercises
can be modified to meet your specific fitness
and comfort level.
FiA and F3 originated in North Carolina and
have locations in over 13 states as the growth
continues rapidly across the US. The mission of
F3 is to “plant, grow and serve small workout
groups for the invigoration of male community
leadership.” While FiA is “a community of
women whose mission is to make each other
stronger in all areas of our lives.”
FiA and F3 reach beyond Daniel Island
with workout locations throughout Charleston,
including Mount Pleasant, Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, West Ashley, Summerville and
Folly Beach to name a few.
We’re very fortunate to have FiA and F3 on
Daniel Island. I (Joe Gough) have been going
for over a year (I quit my gym and started F3)
and am benefiting in so many ways (I’m 53
years old there are no age restrictions). It’s been
awesome to meet other guys and dads from
DI and the Long Point Road area who come
to Governors Park. We’re staying fit, feeling
better, and getting to know and support each
other and our families. I personally like the accountability factor. Your buddies and neighbors
are continuously encouraging you—it’s great!
We’re also setting an example of a fitness lifestyle for our children to see.
These groups are also looking beyond the
workouts to give back to Charleston through
charitable fundraising events, such as last year’s
F3 participation in the Charleston Dragon Boat
Festival (fundraiser for Charleston area cancer
survivors) and other charitable events. We also
plan family events, such as beach days and an
inshore boat and pier fishing tournament for
the kids and everyone who wants to join-in.
We also have specific Saturdays when the kids

at Park Day - such a great family experience!
I (Erin Branham) helped launch FiA on DI in
May of 2016 because I had been attending some
other area locations and was looking for a closer
option. I felt certain there were many women on
and near the island who could also benefit from
a Daniel Island FiA option. We were thrilled to
have over 35 ladies at our first workout! I feel
truly blessed to break a sweat with some really
amazing women I’ve come to know really well
in the past several months. FiA, although an
awesome workout, is truly so much more than
that. I’m excited to see the continued growth
and am hopeful that others will join us. There’s

makes up for it and it’s so nice to get up and get
my fitness checked off of my list before I start
my day.
The final aspect of F3, besides the fitness and
fellowship, is faith. FiA and F3 are not religious
groups. However, each workout concludes with
a short devotion and opportunity to pray for
events going on in each other’s lives: health
issues among family, friends, or co-workers;
recognition of the sacrifices of the military and
their families; challenging issues at work; and
perhaps simpler things like a big test at school
or a tryout for our kids. Just a moment of pause
and reflection and to give thanks for all that is
good as well, including FiA and F3!

Real Estate sales on Daniel Island down this July over last July
Katherine Smith
[email protected]
Sales on Daniel Island in July were
down compared to previous years during the same month. Twenty-five homes
sold in July. The total amount of sales
equaled $15,911,365. With only one
home selling for more than one million
dollars, the total sales amount for the
month was lower than the past couple of
months. The average sell price for the
month was $636,455.
The most expensive home sold during July was in Daniel Island Park on
Ralston Creek Street. The five bedroom
home sold for $1.2 million. The least
expensive home sold on Daniel Island in
July was a one bedroom condo on River
Landing. It sold for $158,000.
As of August 12, there were 177
homes for sale. There were 99 active
and 80 were under contract.
There are several trends that could be
seen during July. According to Hayden
Jennings, owner/broker of Hayden Jennings Properties, “The supply of homes
for sale is tight with 22.2 percent less
single family homes for sale vs. July
2015, while the supply of condos is
about the same as July 2015. Condos
are selling at a bit larger discount and
staying on the market about three times
longer than single family homes. The
discount of list price to sold price of
condos was 95.2 percent with an aver-
of 89 days on the market vs. 97.8
percent discount and 27 days for single
family homes which is almost half the
time on the market compared to July
2015.”
A special thanks to Hayden Jennings
of Hayden Jennings Properties for providing information regarding the status
of real estate on Daniel Island.

The best thing you ate all month:
Sermets Courtyard gets rave reviews
When describing price, portion size, and availability
on the regular menu, this reader gushed, “It’s a keeper on
the menu and more than fair in price and portion. Always
consistently perfect and always the only thing to order (for
me),” but also noted, “Their other dishes are also wonderful
but this is my favorite. Don’t forget the coconut tres leches
for dessert!”

This column is sponsored by Chase Payne Law Firm and

Crystal Klimavicz of Daniel Island said the best thing
she ate all month came from Sermet’s Courtyard on Daniel
Island.
Crystal raved about the Prince Edward Island Mussels,
“The dish is overflowing with sea-faring, mollusk delights.
The broth is heavenly, with just the right amount of oil and
herbs to produce a delicious concoction in which to dip your
mussels and, of course, the accompanying bread, until the
bowl has been wiped clean.”
No matter the price, Crystal noted she would order the
mussels… “But it costs about $12,” adding, “The portion
size is perfect as an app for two to share, or a meal for one
and then touch them if you dare. This appetizer is always
on the menu. If they sought to remove it, I may just need to
petition that wayward decision. This is a dish that leaves no
doubt that I should never cook at home and always go out.”
Crystal was not the only reader raving about Sermets
Courtyard. One anonymous reader replied to our online

Noshing Nirvana survey (https://www.surveymonkey.
com/r/7VNR3ZT) that the best food he or she ate all month
was the braised beef short ribs with ancho chili-apricot
glaze, which the reader described as being served on “moist
risotto and the glaze just pools around the meat that is like
butter tender.”
Want to share your tale of Noshing Nirvana? It’s
simple – just respond to the following or go online at https://
www.surveymonkey.com/r/7VNR3ZT to answer the same
questions as here:
1) Where were you served the best thing you ate all
month?
2) What was the food that left you speechless (mainly
because you couldn’t stop horking it down)?
3) Can you describe what made the dish so magical? Be
sure to speak slowly...
4) Dish more on the dish, if you can - price, portion size,
availability on regular menu, and the psychological repercussions of consuming something so rad.
5) Please email a photo of your to-die-for dish and responses to the four questions above (don’t leave any out!) to
[email protected].
