This year we are once again offering a wide range of programmes which
include many new courses as well as some old favourites. I am sure
that whether you are looking for some training to further your career
opportunities, or seeking to learn a new skill, you will find something that
interests you. I am also certain that you will enjoy your time with Truro
College as many of these courses are not just about learning new skills
but also about meeting new people and gaining confidence.

In 2009 Truro College and Penwith College merged to form one college.
We have developed the Part-time Courses programme, offering more

your Business
The aim of this qualification is to provide basic finance skills to help
a business owner manage a healthy cash flow, gain an in-depth
knowledge of financial documents and how to work more effectively with
their accountants. If you already own your business or want to start up a
new one, then this basic knowledge of accounting will be essential. Key
areas covered include: budgeting: managing cash flow: understanding
financial documents: sole traders, partnerships and limited companies essential principles. Assessment is through a computer based test.
SAGE Accounts (IAB Level 2 in Computerised BookKeeping)
This course uses the popular SAGE LINE 50 computerised accounts
package. Covers sales, purchases, bank reconciliation, VAT schemes

City and Guilds Advanced Diploma for Medical
Secretaries
At Level 3, this Apprenticeship is designed for roles which include
complex accounting tasks, like preparing final accounts for sole-traders
and partnerships, maintaining cost accounting records, extended trial
balances and preparing reports and returns. Includes the Level 3 AAT
qualification. To complete an Apprenticeship you must be employed for
min 30 hours per week plus attend off the job training programme.
The only nationally recognised qualification for medical secretaries in
the UK. Includes: medical administration, business communication,
medical terminology, medical principles and then the practical skills
units of medical word processing, audio transcription and Powerpoint.
Assessment is two external examinations and four internal assignments.
Essential text books are also required (approx £25.00).
Cost Control for Managers Level 5 SUCCESS Course
This university short course provides the skills needed to prepare and
use financial information in order to assist in the management decision
making process within a business. Through gaining an understanding of
management accounting techniques managers and business owners will

Business Administration Advanced Apprenticeship
This course is for employees who work at a high level in administration
without direct supervision, improving the business by developing
systems, questioning the way things are done and suggesting
improvements. Includes the Level 3 Diploma in Business Administration.

Legal Secretary Advanced Apprenticeship
The Legal Secretary Apprenticeship is for those working in a legal
environment. The course covers advanced legal word processing,
business skills in the legal environment and proofreading in the legal

This advanced course covers a wide range of specialist medical

3D Animation Essentials
Gain a basic understanding of the ‘principles’ and techniques of 3D
animation through many different examples and demonstrations. We will
start with traditional hand drawn animation, moving on to computers and
begin to use the software 3DS Max. Develop your skills and techniques

Life Drawing - One Day Workshop
For the beginner a comprehensive “taster” day with an experienced tutor
to help you get started. For the more experienced student or practising
artist - an intensive day working from the life model to consolidate, hone
and develop existing skills with a tutor who is also a practising artist.

Making a Portrait
Portraits are always interesting to do and of course the most important
thing to get right is the face, so you will learn methods and techniques to
do this. The sitter’s characteristic body language and clothes also have
to look convincing if the portrait is to succeed so you will learn how to get
these right too. You will work from the live model with an experienced
tutor to help with this difficult but rewarding subject. Bring to the first

Moku Hanga: Introduction to Japanese (water based)
Woodcut
An introduction to basic Japanese woodcut print making (water based
methods), you will make and print woodcuts and gain knowledge in this
‘low-tech’ printing method. Please bring some imagery either drawings

You will investigate several traditional techniques, emphasis is on
methods students can practise with minimum equipment - etching/
intaglio, wood engraving and woodcut oil/water based. Please bring
source material, either drawings or photos, an apron, simple drawing

Print 303 Hybrid
You will investigate, mix and experiment various techniques. Relief,
Intaglio and Lithography, to print on paper and textile. Emphasis on
using techniques easy to do at home. Please bring source material,
either drawings or photos, an apron, simple drawing tools ie. pencil, biro,
ruler. Some materials are purchased at an additional cost from the tutor
(special quality paper, plate, lino etc.)
The Higher Renaissance
Looking at the painting, sculpture and architecture of the Renaissance
in all its wonderful flowering, not just in Italy but also in Northern Europe,
with Janet de Gaynesford.
Summer School - Drawing & Painting from the Nude
Open in term time Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4pm or place
orders over the telephone and pay by card (min £5).
Drawing and painting from the nude model, with an experienced tutor to
give help and guidance. An opportunity for sustained, in depth work for
the slightly more experienced student and for the beginner a substantial

Cake Decorating
An introduction to basic sugarcraft skills, including royal icing, sugarpaste

Decorating Cupcakes
Designed for the absolute beginner, this course introduces learners to
simple, pretty and effective cake decorating techniques which follow
current trends. Students will require 12 cupcakes and an apron. Small

Crystal Healing can be a powerful therapy said to restore balance and

An internationally recognised qualification for computer technicians.
Covers hardware, operating systems and basic networking. Building
systems from components, upgrading, repairing, and troubleshooting.

PHP Programming for Dynamic Website Design
This course is for people with no prior programming experience. Learn

Covers hardware, protocols, network operating systems and the

computers in a networked environment. Students should have previously

COUNSELLING
CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling
(Year 2)
Students on this course will require a practice placement with a
counselling agency in order to gain 100 hours of supervised practice.
Teaching sessions will combine tutor-led input with student-led
presentations, personal development groups, supervision, professional
practice, advanced counselling skills practice and participation in

CILEx Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice
Covers a range of law, practice and skills-based topics. Each of the units
will be individually assessed in either January or June. This course will

More advanced course in coastal and offshore (Non Astro) navigation,

All students should have either attended that course, or have some
knowledge of shorebased or practical elementary navigation. Subjects
taught or revised: chartwork, coastal and offshore passages, passage

Mathew Harvey currently works as a manager for a surf shop, whilst also getting his
foot in the door of the fitness industry with part-time work at a local leisure centre
covering fitness classes. Although Mathew already held a Level 2 Gym Instructor
