Regulator Selection Guide
Selection Guide...............................................................2
Regulators perform one of three functions:
Back Pressure Regulators
Up to 20 psi ....................................................................3
5 to 300 psi.....................................................................4
50 to 500 psi...................................................................5
5 to 1500 psi...................................................................6
Spring Operated 1 to 125 psi .........................................7
Back Pressure Regulator
Maintains a constant upstream
pressure. It limits upstream pressure
by adjusting open to relieve excess
pressure or conserves upstream
pressure by adjusting closed to limit
the flow to downstream.
Pressure Reducing Regulators
Max. Inlet Max. Outlet
175.............20 psi ......................................................8
300...........300 psi ......................................................9
500...........500 psi.....................................................10
4000.......1500 psi .....................................................11
Supply Gas Regulator 0 to 125 psi ..............................12
Differential Pressure Regulators
3 to 300 psi...................................................................13
High Pressure...............................................................14
Pressure Reducing Regulator
Maintains a constant downstream
pressure.
It limits downstream
pressure by adjusting closed to limit
the flow to downstream or supports
downstream pressure by adjusting
open to allow additional flow from
upstream.
Differential Pressure Regulator
Maintains a constant difference
between upstream and downstream
pressure. This difference in pressure
may be maintained between the inlet
and outlet of the regulator itself, or it
may be maintained between the inlet
and outlet of a separate device such
as a flow meter.

We start with Regulators because that’s
where Kimray started.
In 1948 Kimray introduced its first
product - the 3” Pilot Operated Back
Pressure Regulator.
It was designed to provide a far
superior alternative to the lever / weight
operated and spring operated back
pressure valves.
IT TURNED OUT TO BE A
VERY GOOD IDEA!

WHY USE A PILOT OPERATED REGULATOR?
Pressure regulators are commonly available in two types, the spring-operated regulator
(sometimes called a direct-operated regulator) and a pilot-operated regulator. The spring
operated regulator is very responsive, but it is not selected for its accuracy.
As the flowing volume changes the set point changes, a pilot-operated regulator is
selected because of its control accuracy. The pilot keeps the set point precisely constant
with even large changes in flowing volume.

We didn’t want to make just another
supply gas regulator.
So how is it better than the others?
But when our customers said we don't
want another regulator; we want a
better one, we made one.
Well, one of the problems with supply gas
regulators is that the output pressure
"droops" with large changes in flow rate or
large changes in upstream pressure.
Kimray's is better because it has less
"droop" than any of the other popular brands.
Pressure Differential Regulators
5 to 300 psig Controlled Pressure
‡®

between upstream and downstream.
Any change in downstream pressure will cause a
repositioning of the stem assembly until a like change in
upstream pressure ocurrs to maintain the set
differential pressure.

Pressure Differential Regulator
PD
Pressure Range: 5 to 280 psig
Maintains a constant pressure differential between its own
upstream and downstream connections. If the difference
between upstream and downstream pressures is too low, the
valve will close slightly to increase the differential.
Upstream Differential Pressure Regulator
USDP
Pressure Range: 5 to 280 psig
Maintains a constant pressure differential across another
device within the same flowing system. If the difference
between the upstream and downstream pressures acting upon
the meter or meter run being monitored is too low, the valve will
open slightly, increasing the flow rate which results in an
increase in the differential.

Liquid Service:
Most regulators can be modified for liquid service.
An outside source of instrument gas is required.
The instrument gas pressure must be at least 60% of
the maximum upstream pressure or 10 psi; whichever
is greater.

Pressure Differential Regulators
Up to 4000 psig Static Pressure

Pressure Differential Controller
PDC
Controlled Pressure Differential Range: 1 to 260 inches H2O
A Pressure Differential Regulator can be
assembled using the following Kimray devices:
High Pressure Motor Valve 1”-6”
Pressure Differential Controller:
100 PDC for 1000 psi max. static pressure
200 PDC for 2000 psi max. static pressure
400 PDC for 4000 psi max. static pressure
Instrument Gas Regulator
Drip Pot
Steel Tubing & Fittings
Maintains a constant pressure differential across another
device within the same flowing system.
The “PDC” Series Pressure Differential Controller connects
across the orifice plate of a meter run to maintain a constant
stable pressure differential across the meter run. This relates to
a constant flow rate when the upstream or downstream
pressure is constant. The pilot adjusts the flow rate to maintain
the pressure differential by positioning a pressure opening
motor valve with equal percentage valve trim for precise flow
control.
Applications:
Precise gas flow rate for gas lift.
Better charts and measurement on meter runs.
Stabilizes gas flow for better well production.
Differential limiting for reducing “off chart” conditions.
Features:
Intermittent bleed construction
Throttle operation
1 to 260 inches of water differential pressure
Heavier spring available (425” H2O)
Pilot may be used with many types of diaphragm motor valves
SOMETIMES YOU JUST HAVE TO GIVE UP AND
ADMIT SUCCESS!
The PDC originially started life as an obscure liquid level control pilot before a very
creative fellow at Kimray converted one into a Pressure Differential Control.
It became one of our top 10 sellers before we had even put it in our catalog!

On / Off Control Valves
Fully open or fully closed, the valve is designed to permit
maximum flow or no flow at all. Almost any control valve can be
used for On / Off service, but some valves are designed
exclusively for such applications and are the ones listed in this
section. The most common applications are as Dump Valves or
Shut-Down Valves.
Throttle Control Valves
The plug in the valve is designed for proportional control of flow.
The most common application is as a regulator of flow, pressure,
liquid level, or temperature.
Three-Way Control Valves
Divert flow from inlet to either of two outlets, or mix the flow from
two inlets to a common outlet.

Natural Gas
Glycol Pump
Wet natural gas enters the bottom of the absorber. It
flows upward through a packed bed or through a series
of bubble cap or valve trays filled with glycol where
thorough contact is made. The gas gives up water
vapor to the glycol as it passes upward and leaves the
absorber as dry gas ready to enter the sales line.
The Glycol Pump takes glycol at absorber pressure,
moves it into the reboiler at atmospheric pressure, and
then returns it to pressure adequate to drive the glycol
back into the abosrber. All this is accomplished by
utilizing some of the gas at absorber pressure to drive the
system without an additional source of outside energy.
Glycol
The Glycol Pump operates in various demanding
conditions: high temperature, high pressure, varied
chemical contaminates, and potential of a wide range of
abrasive materials.
The dry concentrated glycol is continuously pumped to
the top tray of the absorber. As the glycol moves downward from tray to tray it absorbs the water vapor from
the rising gas stream. The wet glycol is then removed
at the bottom of the absorber and pumped through a
large preheating coil in the surge tank. It then enters
the still column at the top of the reboiler where the
water vapor is stripped away as steam.
The regenerated glycol spills down into the surge tank
and is pumped to the top of the absorber to start
another cycle.
Nearly 50 years of demanding service have proven the
ruggedness and dependability of the unique and robust
design.

Glycol Filter Canister
Used to filter particles of rust, sludge and debris from the
glycol lines before the glycol reaches the pumping system.
This allows the glycol pump to operate more freely and
reduces pump wear. The filter itself is disposable and can
easily be replaced.

T 12TDA
The sensing element in the Kimray
Thermostat is a bi-metalic probe. The outer
tube is 304 stainless steel, and the inner rod
is low expansion nickel. The expansion
rates due to heat in both the metals are very
consistent which provides smooth, proportional output -- throttling action.
When the thermostat is installed with its
probe completely surrounded by the liquid or
gas it is monitoring, there is virtually no
deadband.
Other types of thermostats providing such
control cost considerably more, and lack the
simplicity.

“WHAT’S A SEPERABLE SOCKET?”
Some call it a Thermowell. We call the well
for a thermometer a Thermowell.
The Separable Socket is a protective well
designed for the Kimray Thermostat.
It protects the Thermostat probe from corrosion
or physical forces which could bend it. It also
increases the maximum working pressure of
the Thermostat.

PILOT?
The PILOT of a ship or an airplane watches
where he is going and makes slight corrections when he sees that he is not on course.

Direct or Indirect?
A DIRECT acting pilot sends an
increasing output pressure when it
senses an increasing controlled
pressure.
An INDIRECT acting pilot sends a
decreasing output pressure when it
senses an increasing controlled
pressure.
The PG PR and HPG PR Pilots are
INDIRECT acting pilots.

Steel Tubing & Fittings
PDC
Controlled Pressure Differential Range: 1 to 260 inches H2O
Features:
