Legislation
• October 7 1991 Federal American with Disabilities act mandated that public
and private fixed route transit systems provide audible announcements for stop
identification.
• Federal Register , Volume 56 No. 173 codified at 49 C.F.R. Part 37.167
• Reviewed periodically with the last APTA work group finding released end of
Q1 2010
• Enforced via public lawsuits and Federal audits
• Mandates announcements must be made, not how

What MUST be announced
• Minimum Requirements
• Any stop that is a transfer point for other fixed routes
• Any major intersection and destination points
• At sufficient intervals along a rout to orient a visually impart
passenger
• At any stop requested by a passenger with a disability
• Also, if more than one vehicle serves the same stop, then the
system must differentiate between vehicles OR that person must be
able to be identified by the driver as seeking to ride that route
