Penney Industrial Limited of Pennecon Energy has completed a major
electrical contract for the wind-hydrogen-diesel (WHD) research and
development project being undertaken by Newfoundland and Labrador
Hydro in Ramea.
Penney Industrial was awarded the contract in September 2009 for the
“balance of plant” electrical services associated with the WHD project.
General Manager Greg Oliver said the electrical contract wrapped up the
end of January, adding that it was a very successful project and gave Penney
Industrial an opportunity to work with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro
for the first time.
Greg said the Ramea project allowed Penney Industrial to broaden its
experience with wind energy projects following the completion of the
St. Lawrence Wind Farm project in 2008. He stated: “This contract allowed
us to get involved with the first commercial Hydrogen generation project in
the province. We worked closely with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro
personnel to ensure completion of this unique fast-track project, while
overcoming such challenges as the remote island location and early winter
construction.”
Editor’s Note
Correction: There was an error in the Employee Profile section in the October
2009 issue of PenneconTalk. The employee profiled was Chris Halusiak, not
Reg Harding. Reg’s name was used inadvertently in the headline. We
apologize for the error.
The WHD project
consists of the
following primary
components: three
100kW wind
turbines; a hydrogen
electrolyser that uses
electricity to
dissociate water into
hydrogen and oxygen; three large hydrogen storage tanks; and hydrogen
genset assembly consisting of five paralleled combustion engines. Penney
Industrial’s electrical services contract included the installation of the
hydrogen genset assembly and the hookups of the genset, wind turbines
and electrolyser to a new substation with power/control connection to the
existing diesel generating station.

Hold Remembrance Day Tribute
Pennecon Energy employees working on the GSF Grand Banks retrofit project at Bull Arm
joined with thousands of Canadians across the country on Remembrance Day to pause in
memory of the men and woman who sacrificed their lives during military service.
Two minutes of silence was held by Pennecon Energy workers at 11 a.m. on November 11,
2009 to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. All work at the Bull Arm site
was halted during the tribute, followed by a horn blast from the rig. Approximately 500
people worked on the retrofit project at Bull Arm.

Pennecon Divisions
Celebrate ISO Certification
Employees in Pennecon’s Heavy Civil and Energy Divisions have good reason
to celebrate – both recently received their ISO 9001:2008 certification.
Pennecon Energy and its subsidiary companies, Ozark Services, Hydraulic
Systems Ltd and Bay Bulls Marine Terminal continue their success in
adherence to the ISO 9001:2008 Standard. Penney Industrial is also
scheduled to join the ISO 9001:2008 ranks this year.
Don Noseworthy, Senior Vice-President of Pennecon Energy, congratulated
all employees on this great achievement. He stated: “These achievements
are being made possible as a result of the hard work, commitment and
dedication that each of the employees of Pennecon Energy exhibit every day
in making sure we meet and strive to exceed our client’s requirements in
everything we do.”
Jill Stanley, Quality Manager, thanks the following Quality Team Members

Pennecon’s corporate offices in Paradise held its second annual Children’s
Christmas Party on December 12, 2009. The amazing magician, Gary
Summers, entertained the 18 children, as well as parents with his exciting
magic show. There was lots of fun, food and laughter. The day was
complete when Santa delivered toys for all the boys and girls. Mrs. Claus
and Santa’s elves were also there to lend a hand. Everybody had a wonderful
time and enjoyed the Christmas spirit. The look in the children’s eyes and
the smiles on their faces when they saw Santa were magical moments. The
party created many lasting memories for the special boys and girls.
Pennecon is currently undergoing a building extension to
its corporate offices in Paradise, thanks to the continued
success and growth of the company. Construction began
in late 2009 and will be completed this summer. Below

Employee Profile: John “Bud” Butler
John has been with Pennecon Limited for 17
years and is a foreman at Capital Precast Ltd
in Pennecon’s Concrete Division. He is a
veteran in the construction industry with over
25 years of experience. He began his career
with Atlantic Concrete in the early 1980s,
which was acquired by Pennecon Concrete in
the 1990s.
John is proud to be working for Pennecon
and is committed to ensuring that the best
job possible is done for all clients. He believes
that the most important value of any organization is its employees. “Having good
employees is what makes an organization successful,” says John.
John noted that his dad’s work ethic has always inspired him and, as a result, he
strives to do his best at whatever project he takes on. “My determination to
always work hard and to be the best I can is important to me… and I think this
also originates from my dad’s strong ethics.”
Brad Cole, Senior Vice-President of the Heavy Civil Division, said: “The
accomplishment is consistent with Pennecon’s strong quality focus and
demonstrates our commitment to continuous improvement while providing a
solid framework for the highest level of service and products to our clients.”
While John takes his work very seriously, he also knows it is important to enjoy
what you do and have fun. So, what has been one of his funniest memories
working at Pennecon? “Getting Dan Scaplen to admit that he was wrong and to
apologize,” he says jokingly. (Dan is also a foreman at Capital Precast)
The ISO certification process involves a comprehensive registration audit by
Quasar, a Quality Systems Assessment Registrar accredited as a Certification
Body by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC).
Besides working at Capital Precast, located on the TCH just outside St. John’s,
John keeps himself busy with many hobbies, including hockey, golfing and
anything to do with old cars – repairing them, driving them and going to antique
car shows. He also does volunteer work with his church. John’s favorite foods are
steak and chicken and his favorite song is, “If I Can Dream” by Elvis Presley. When
asked if there is any accomplishment that he is proud of, John said he is especially
pleased to have been able to put his daughter through law school and is very
proud of her success. Another feat that John modestly boasts about is the time he
got an eagle in golf!
