A Day in the Life of the Wing Commander
Col. Lowthian’s day starts early and is filled
with tasks at Canada’s busiest air base
Accompanying Col. Lowthian to the gym on that
day was Wing Chief Warrant Officer (WCWO) Sandor Gyuk and the Wing Commander’s Executive
Assistant Captain (Capt.) David Hoang. Neither
men are very experienced in boxing, but the Wing
Commander took a few minutes prior to the workout to give them some tips. He also enjoys this aspect of boxing and alternates as a coach for WO
Legnaro during the workout.
They completed nine, three-minute rounds alternating between the boxer and the coach. The boxer
practices his punches, moves and timing under
the watchful eye of the coach and, as each round
winds down, the boxer spends the last 115 seconds
throwing a quick flurry of punches.

P
hysical fitness ranks high on the personal
agenda of 8 Wing Commander Colonel (Col.)
David Lowthian, which is why he kicks every day
off with an intense workout.
By following the Wing Commander as he conducted his daily routine, it soon became obvious
that he is so committed to a physical fitness regimen. Each week on Mondays, Wednesdays and
Fridays he hits the south side gym at 6:30 a.m. for
his boxing workouts.
On Wednesday, October 30, his sparring partner
was Warrant Officer Tony Legnaro. WO Legnaro
has been boxing since he was 12 years old, with a
couple of pro fights under his belt. Now, he coaches boxing both on the base and in Belleville.
Col. Lowthian has boxed since he was 14 years
old but, only boxed in club fights.
“I do it for the workout,” he told The Contact.
“It’s a really good workout. After this, I can handle anything through the day.”

battle with PTSD
Their story is encapsulated in his

T
he most important concept
to the healing of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
according to Lieutenant Colonel
(Lt.-Col.) Chris Linford, author
of Warrior Rising – a soldier’s
journey to PTSD and back, is
guidance without judgement,
fewer barriers to facilitate the
cycle of care and, reduced stigma surrounding the injury.
Having battled PTSD for 18
of his 33 years in the Canadian
Armed Forces (24 in the Regular Force and 8 in the Reserve
Force), he should know whereof
he speaks, especially since he
served as a medical commander
during some of those 33 years.
His book was written to “kick
the ass of PTSD” according to
his blog about the book. But, that
will only happen if people at all
levels of the Canadian Armed
Forces and the Canadian public
pay attention to his advice. Otherwise, PTSD will continue to
affect many military personnel
returning from battle zones, no
matter their rank.
On Oct. 28, Lt.-Col. Linford
spoke at Baker Island at 8 Wing
Trenton at an event sponsored
by the Military Family Resource
Centre (MFRC). At the event,
he related the same advice that
might have saved him and his
family from 18 years of PTSD
purgatory.
“PTSD cannot be managed
alone,” he stated. “It takes a
community to manage PTSD:
from the soldier, to the family,
to the neighbours, to the clinical
resources to whatever is around
us, we need them all to get well.
It starts with an attitude – a nonjudgemental attitude and with
an understanding this is a devastating injury (that) if left untreated, can be fatal.”
He needed that kind of help
and attitude when he returned
from Rwanda, but he didn’t
know as much about PTSD at
that time – in fact, PTSD was
unheard of then and it has only
been in the past few years that it
is being taken seriously by the
medical profession and the military. He learned his lessons the
hard way – mostly by himself –
although he acknowledges how
his wife Kathryn stuck by him
throughout his battle, although
she came to resent him and this
thing called PTSD.
He fought with his first bout
of PTSD after returning from
Rwanda. Thinking he had conquered it, he then went to Afghanistan where his injury
resurfaced upon his return to
Canada.
He describes PTSD as a “…
short loop of memory or movie
that would spin when triggered
over and over without a beginning or end or any real context
whatsoever.”
His triggers were loud, sudden noises like the slamming of
a door, fireworks, sirens, ambulances, and police vehicles. His
other triggers were small, black
children; backpacks; crowds;
dead animals; or, the sight or
smell of blood or raw flesh.
His “movie” was very real, as
well, he recalled.
When it began to settle in, he
said he would get ready for a
nasty ride full of colour, sound
and smells. At the height of his
PTSD, he said he could smell
blood from 100 metres. Not surprisingly, he would try to avoid
these triggers at all costs, even
to the point of having his wife
Kathryn go into a function first
to ensure there were no triggers
present.
Like many sufferers of PTSD,
Lt.-Col. Linford isolated himself
in an attempt to just ride out
the illness. In fact, he was not
the man his family was used to
seeing and he was very hard on
his children, to the point they
would often avoid bringing their
friends to the house because
they never knew what he would
say or do.
His wife’s resentment built
when they left for yet another
posting while leaving their children behind to complete their
education, etc., and Kathryn left
a job she really liked. At their
new posting, Lt.-Col. Linford
continued to battle PTSD and life
became miserable for his wife.
The wedge seemed to get wider
and wider between them at this
stage in their relationship with
PTSD.
It wasn’t until he finally confided in her that he was seriously considering suicide that she
finally began to realize just how
acute this problem really was. In
their presentation at 8 Wing, she
repeatedly stated, “I just didn’t
know what I didn’t know.”
Much of the harm he did to
his family remained unknown
to him throughout the issue as
he somehow justified the way
he treated everyone. An essay
his daughter wrote years later
helped him understand what
they were going through.
“You couldn’t imagine what
going through three tours in a
war zone could do to someone,”
she wrote. “The stories he told
us once he got back were what
made me so proud of him – he
was my hero. The unfortunate
thing about these stories was
that they hid the hideous truth
of what really happened. Like
many soldiers do, my father suffered alone for 10 years.”
When he finally sat down and
confessed his problem to his
family, his young daughter at therapeutic to the point where,
the time could not really under- as he put it, he began to own his
stand what PTSD was because thoughts and his injury.

event,” said Colonel (Col.) David Lowthian, Commander of 8 Wing Trenton. “Our participation
in CRUZEX FLIGHT 13 fosters a spirit of cooperation, understanding, and mutual respect between partner nations.”
Eight allied countries are participating in this
year’s exercise: Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia,
Ecuador, Uruguay, the U.S.A., and Venezuela.
During CRUZEX FLIGHT 13, the RCAF will
have the opportunity to exercise transport missions in conventional war scenarios in a combined environment, exchange doctrinal procedures, and upgrade training levels of aerial
units participating. The CC-130J will be used as
a transport platform to parachute United States
Air Force and Brazilian Air Force members into
a robust tactical environment, demonstrating the
spirit of mutual trust and cooperation.
“In this exercise, our team will be able to validate our knowledge and skills in a combined,
robust training environment,” said LieutenantColonel (Lt.-Col.) Mark Goulden, Commanding
Officer of 436 (Transport) Squadron and RCAF
Detachment Commander. “Exercises such as
CRUZEX FLIGHT 13 are valuable as we get to
work with our allies under realistic training scenarios, exchange best practices, and learn how
we can better operate with other nations’ militaries.”
In addition to flying tactical missions, the CC130 J Hercules crew will also engage in academic
discussions regarding the use of night vision
goggles and building relationships with partner
nations.

Col. Lowthian’s day at
Canada’s busiest air base
Three rounds in, they take a brief rest
and check on CWO Gyuk and Capt. Hoang.
Both men find the boxing workout tough
slugging. Capt. Hoang, having aggravated
a former tennis injury, keeps working out
at a modified level.
After a breather and answering a few
questions from the reporter, Col. Lowthian and WO Legnaro go back to work,
working a little harder and really working
up a sweat. Six rounds later, they look at
the clock and prepare to vacate the room
because another class is due to arrive.
As they leave the gym, both Col. Lowthian and CWO Gyuk comment on the number of people working out in the gym.
“That’s pretty impressive the number
of people here this morning,” CWO Gyuk
noted.
“They’re here on their own time, not
under orders,” added Col. Lowthian.
“Those are committed people working
out because they enjoy the workout. I’ve
been at other bases where there would
be that many people out, but they would
have to be there. I like seeing this kind of
commitment on this base.”
Col. Lowthian’s own level of commitment to fitness is impressive as well.
While he boxes three times a week, he
fills in the rest of the week (Tuesday,
Thursday and Saturday) by working out
with weights.

Having already eaten breakfast prior
to the boxing workout, Col. Lowthian
returns to his office to work there for an
hour or so prior to moving on to French
lessons at 9:30 a.m. held at the former 426
Squadron building. He not only believes
in the mantra of the improving oneself
throughout a career with the Canadian
Armed Forces, but he practices it as
well. He spends two hours conversing in
French under the personal tutelage of
Amevi Aidam. Then it is back to his office
prior to going to lunch.
According to Capt. Hoang, most mornings, such as Tuesday and Friday, are populated with the routine items such as the
Ops Brief and meetings.
“Requested meetings are normally
done in the afternoon, similar with the
telecom, but we are flexible,” Capt. Hoang
noted.
Normally, Col. Lowthian goes to the
Officers’ Mess for a working lunch. But
sometimes he has his lunch at his desk
while signing papers. According to Capt.
Hoang, he sometimes has working lunches with VIPs or other Commanders. And
on occasion, he will go home for lunch
with his wife. On this particular day, he
went home to let the new puppy they got
the day before out for a walk and some relief.
After this brief interlude, he returned
to the office, signed papers and caught up
on business. Throughout it all, Capt. Hoang keeps him briefed on things happening around the base.
This particular afternoon saw the
Wing Commander heading to the Canadian Army Advanced Warfare Centre
(CAAWC) where he was scheduled to do
a tandem freefall jump over Mountain
View. But overcast skies and a low ceiling
threatened to cancel the event.
He was met by Lt.-Col Francois Dufault,
the Commanding Officer of CAAWC, who
filled in the time with a tour of CAAWC,
an aging building about to be replaced
with newer, state-of-the-art digs now under construction as part of the infrastructure update taking place at 8 Wing.
Lt.-Col. Dufault proudly showed off the
well supplied woodworking shop his team
uses and the many training and teaching
areas within the building. Both men compared notes throughout the tour and discovered there are areas where they can
work together.
Lt.-Col. Dufault also explained that the
tandem jump is not just something they
do for fun to impress visiting commanders or civilians.

The Royal Canadian Legion conducts
The Poppy Campaign.
After the artillery bombardments
of the First World War had destroyed
most of the vegetation, a determined
wildflower, the poppy, began to flourish. Its colour reminded soldiers of
the blood lost on that very ground
and inspired Canadian John McCrae
to write his famous poem In Flanders
Fields. That poem, in turn, became
the inspiration for The Royal Canada
Legion Poppy Campaign.
On July 5, 1921, The Great War Veteran’s Association in Canada, the
predecessor of The Royal Canadian
Legion, officially adopted the poppy
as its Flower of Remembrance.
The poppy serves to recognize the
sacrifices that were made for their
freedom and it forges a bond between
people of all ages.
In 2012, there were 18 million poppies worn in Canada, which, as a result, raised over $12 million for the
Royal Canadian Legion’s programs
and services to support veterans and
their families.
At this time of year, we remember
the men and women who have paid the
ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and
way of life. As we wear our red poppy
as a tangible sign of remembrance,
let us also remember those who bear
the physical and mental injuries they
sustained in their fight for our way of
life. While theirs was not the ultimate
sacrifice, they have and are paying a
heavy price for us.
As the Liberal Party Critic for Veterans Affairs, I encourage all Canadians to take the time to donate to The
Poppy Campaign and proudly wear a
poppy in remembrance.

“It was as if the machete of Rwanda and the
IEDs of Afghanistan also struck me – it struck at
my humanity and it cleaved off what I think was
left of my soul,” he noted.
Every military person in those situations is in
what he calls “mission mode,” where they just
get on with it and do what they have to do, sacrifice what they have to sacrifice to do what they
need to do.
However, when the deployment is over, he said
it was time for military personnel to be healed.
“It is not a time to ignore what just happened to
you,” he said.
A lesson he did learn from his battle with PTSD
was that it will often be those closest to you who
first recognize there is a problem.
“I learned it is likely the family who will first
recognize the signs, and all too often they don’t
know what to do and, maybe, they might be fearful of doing anything at all,” he added.
That is where Lt.-Col Linford and his wife believe the community must come in. The community needs to help rescue the soldiers who once
put their lives and limbs on the line in a far away
country to keep those horrors away from that
very community and his or her country.
“Fewer barriers are needed to facilitate the
cycle of care and reduce the stigma surrounding
this injury,” he added.

Col. Lowthian’s day at Canada’s busiest air base
“I try to manage his calendar in a way
so he has a moment to breathe,” Capt.
Hoang said. “We do a weekly calendar review where he would provide guidance on
both short-term and long-term wing-wide
events. I put in all the important items
when I get visibility on them and fill in
the gaps with the stuff as they come up.”
Col. Lowthian acknowledges it has
been a busy first few months in command
at 8 Wing but now wants to spend more
time getting to know his team from top to
bottom.
“They know I’m the Wing Commander,
but most of them have never really had
an opportunity to meet me,” he said. “I’m
going to try to change that.”
It was something borne out by his visit
to CAAWC. Introduced to several people,
it was obvious they did not know who
they were meeting until the introduction,
but they took the quick second look and
liked what they saw.
Others were overheard wondering
what was going on and then managed
to get another look at the man leading 8
Wing through the next couple of years.
Col. Lowthian made it plain to them and
others that he wants to get out and find
out what makes his many squadrons and
teams the well-oiled machine he can rely
on to respond to the needs of the Canadian Armed Forces world-wide.

“There is a reason for doing tandem
jumps,” he said. “If you have a specialist
who needs to get into a remote area and
the only or quickest way in is by parachute, this is how we do that. If you need
a sniper to get into an area and take up a
position on a cliff, our guys will drop him
in and then get him up on that cliff to
spot or do whatever he needs to do. There
is very definitely a reason for doing this
kind of thing.”
But on this day, the tandem jump ended
up being cancelled because of the low
ceiling.
A few months into his command, Col.
Lowthian is now settling into the routine
at 8 Wing after experiencing the “drinking from the fire hose” syndrome of tak-
ing over a command.
Capt. Hoang intimated that Col. Lowthian is very hands-on but delegates authority when appropriate.
“His day-to-day calendar is managed by
me but he sometimes throws meetings in
there if required (generally he forwards
me the emails to action),” he stated.
Family time is also important to this
Wing Commander, according to Capt. Hoang.
“Col. Lowthian is big on family. His wife
(Nancy) participates in as many functions as possible. He often talks about his
kids and makes time to go to their graduations, etc.,” he noted.
It often falls in Capt. Hoang’s purview
to help manage the Wing Commander’s
time.
