IT'S JUNE!!! AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S JUNE? WOW!! WE'RE ALREADY WORKING ON OUR JULY ISSUE. JULY?!!! Let's just enjoy June first! And we are, enjoying June... look inside this issue and you'll see the fun is just beginning!!! Early this month we did something special with our friends Sandy and Hank. They travelled with us to Cape May Court House in New Jersey where we visited the Jessie Creek Winery and The Inn at Jessie Creek. Owned by Bruce Morrison and Art Reale, Jessie Creek Winery has recently been awarded a Silver Medal for their Cabernet Sauvignon. We just had to have a taste... or two. Turn to page 26 and you'll learn more about our adventure. We had a full day, finished off with some shopping and dinner in Cape May. gifts. You know those flags, or pins, or cards, or even nickels or dimes arriving at your home in an envelope with a letter asking for a donation? Using money to get money? Turn to Allen Herman's Charity By Any Name on page 6 and see how you feel. His comments may sound humorous, but there's nothing funny about them. Good news!! We're already working on next month's Glove Box Savings Coupon Book: The Restaurant Edition. This time around, the books will be stapled in the magazine thereby reducing dramatically the chances of it getting lost in the mail. Filled with great money savings coupons and specials, we don't want ANYONE to miss getting this Coupon Book. Fine dining, great Chinese restaurants, pizza parlors, an Irish Pub and several terrific neighborhood Spanish and Italian restaurants to mention just a few... even a "super duper" bakery and more... will be in this little "goodie." And just in time for your summer fun! Linda Speaks In this issue we give you a "Heads Up" for a terrific home decor showplace, Eva's Home Decor. Located in the Marketplace in Huntingdon Valley, Eva's recently moved from its former location in Southampton. It's new, larger space is filled to the brim with beautiful lighting, accessories, furniture, china, hostess gifts and more. Eva's offers real eye candy for the senses and interesting complements to your home environment. Check out page 12 for the details. We've got some other neat "stuff" between our covers. A little piece about some "Ridiculous Lawsuits," some new words concocted by the Mensa Society, puzzles and recipes... they all make this issue perfect for some comfy time in the shade or in the sun. So take a little time to read it through. We hope you'll find it engaging and useful. With interesting editorial and terrific advertisers anxious to make your life easier and better... Enjoy! See you in July with another great issue AND another Glove Box Savings Coupon Book! When we moved into our new condo I received a solicitation from a charity seeking money for the Children of Chernobyl. It looked like a good cause and I sent them a check for eighteen dollars. Two weeks later I received another solicitation from a group trying to restore a famous church in Brooklyn. Again I sent them a check for eighteen dollars. During the next several weeks I began to get requests from charity after charity for donations. I could barely keep up with them. I received requests from America, Israel, Africa and a huge group of religious organizations of all denominations, seeking funds for worthy causes. They began to arrive more quickly than I could possibly respond. Eighteen dollars went to one charity and eighteen dollars went to another. It went on and on. La Cena The Lord has been good to us and we have always been appreciative. We believe in helping those in need or less fortunate. Religious, racial or civic, as long as the monies weren't going to purchase suicide belts, we have tried to be responsive. But it was beginning to get out of hand. After awhile, when I started entering the amounts in Quicken, I began to increase the checks to individual charities by a penny each time I responded. So if it was my fifth check to Boys Town the check became eighteen dollars and five cents. My check to the Injured War Veterans read eighteen dollars and twenty one cents. My last check to Save the Children was for eighteen dollars and nine cents. This simple little system allowed me to see how many checks I was sending the various groups and how frequently I was sending them monies. Then I noticed that I was getting more and more mail from "virgin" ... groups that I had never contributed to. This confused me. So one day, playing a hunch (while in one of my weirder moods) I inserted the name "Gotno Gelt" in the appropriate box. EUREKA... I suddenly began to get a massive number of new appeals to good old "Gotno Gelt." Next I began to use the name "Edwina Rupperschmidt" (I have no idea as to why that name entered my weird mind) and I began to get lots of new mail for "Edwina Rupperschmidt." Same thing happened when I signed contributions with names like "Sam Schmidlap," "Yenta Cohen" and "Pinky Putzaroo." I had discovered the secret. These various charities were selling my names. Every time I used a new name it was being sold to other charitable institutions. Furthermore many of those seeking my eighteen plus dollars were all using the same mailing address in Milwaukee. Even the telephone calls for funds were coming from one or two offices in the general area. I understand clearly that this is not a racket. Most, if not all, of the charities I was being solicited by, are honorable groups trying to get money for their organizations. But come on guys and gals... I only have but so many eighteen dollar plus checks that I am able to make out. The economy isn't that great and I can sell but so many ads. And my poor mailman is just plain overloaded. So I began to write polite little notes. "Please take me of your list as I am now an atheist" or "married to a Continued on page 8 To Advertise Call: (215) 510-5972 www.theuptightsuburbanite.com • June 2012 • 7 HAVE MORE FUN! Continued from page 7 woman who does not believe in charity" did little good. Professing to having become recently poor or ill helped even less. Telling these groups I now had eight kids in college and currently required my own donations also fell on deaf ears. Terms like "moved, deceased, demented and departed" also had little effect. Cute terms, nasty terms, ignoring the letters… nothing seemed to deter the onslaught of solicitations. "Please don't sell my name" did even less good. Not only did things get worse, I began to get militant phone calls from charities insisting I start "kicking in" again. It was then that I discovered some of the calls were from paid solicitors and not volunteers. Some were working on commission! And many of these people were "aggressive." I did appreciate that they all spoke English HAPPY HOUR SPECIALS $ 5:30-7:30 Budweiser & Bud Light Bottles Stella Artois Draft 2 $ 3 Well Drinks $ 50 2 26 HDTVs Watch All Sports Here! Al, Gotno, Yenta and Edwina's letters to the rest of my imaginary clan became more and more frequent, and more and more unsettling. The weekly pile of solicitations got higher and higher. Finally, after listening to my multi-herniated mail person sobbing uncontrollably, I began to write "REFUSED" on anything that came to my growing list of alter egos. Even some of Al's envelopes began to get stamped "REFUSED." I assumed this would solve the problem. It hasn't. The poor postal people now have twice as much work … now they must also take back the multitude of envelopes they deliver. Charitable organizations have also developed a new tactic. They are now sending me gifts. Every day is like Hanukah or Christmas. I get T-Shirts, flags, banners, pens, tablets, mailing labels, calendars, and more. My mail box resembles a novelty store. Opening that little mail slot is like participating in a Pollyanna. This makes me feel guilty. I can't support the World. Unlike the American Congress I can't increase my debt limit by some odd trillion-plus dollars every other day. So I have begun to refuse anything that comes with gifts. My poor mailman is now taking back more items than he is delivering. The man carries a bigger bag than Santa Clause. No matter how I apologize for this load I have inflicted on him, I know he secretly hates me. I am the mail person's most feared nightmare, a multi-personality, charitable, middle class bleeding heart with a strange sense of humor. They are sending me money … pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters even dollar bills. All are in plain view in their window stationery. Many claim that if I send them money some wealthy philanthropist will match the donation I make. Mr. and Mrs. Charities ... you have gone way too far. I have had it. Sending me money that people have sent you to get me to send you more money is past the comprehension of the now incarcerated Bernie Madoff. It is a waste. Furthermore, when I get a flag that was made in China from the Wounded American Vets I really get ANGRY. Pens from India, note pads from Burma and T-shirts from Mars also are not pleasing. If it isn’t from the USA you are getting an unopened envelope returned, fast! AND you're going on my all time “never open their stuff again” list. I am a simple man with simple ideas. Send me an American flag and it damn well better be made in America. So I am telling you, in defense of myself and the exhausted postal workers, the child labor in India and the makers of truly inferior products in China, "Leave Me ALONE." "Gotno," "Edwina" and "Yenta Cohen" and the rest of the clan are gone. I am now at war. I am stamping just about every solicitation with "Rejected" and "Refused" stamps. And my mailman is just about to join the "cause" … Please … leave us all alone. We will continue to contribute whatever amount we can afford … to whatever charities (sans communications and trinkets from you) … when we want to. Solicit us with gifts and tokens, and you will never see another dime. Allen Herman Your opinions are always welcomed. Actually, it's not so new. It was originally located down the road a bit, in Southampton on Second Street Pike. But it's definitely larger and DEFINITELY has a lot more to pretty-up your home. Eva's ceiling glistens with crystals and light. Large and small, the light fixtures run the gamut from very modern to more traditional. Some chandeliers are beautifully ornate. Others are more simple. She offers a full range of styles, to suit every taste. Eva's Home Decor is the place for Modern Lighting and Unique Home Accessories. We were looking for some very specific fixtures and checked out Eva's. We found not only our fixtures, but furniture, china, crystal, and more. I also noticed interesting vases, select area rugs, neat throw pillows... You'll need some time to take in all the wonderful things offered. An easy stroll, a few times around the perimeter, and each go 'round will reveal something you missed and another "I could use that." You'll see there's a lot you can use at Eva's! As you enter the huge space, the entire right hand wall is filled with beautiful place settings, accessories, and stemware. I saw some lovely pieces perfect for a much needed hostess gift... and it was priced well within my budget. It's a shame I don't need a wedding gift because I saw exactly what I would give the new bride and groom. Trust me when I say I thought more than twice about returning to buy the magnificant "dip & chip" ensemble for myself!! In the same area, you'll find one of the area's largest displays of Judaica. Silver Kiddush Cups, Seder Plates, Hallah Trays, Sabbath Candlesticks; Eva has a great selection, much of which you will not see anywhere else. As you circle the substantial showroom you'll see staged room arrangements, tables, lights, sofas. Many of the sofas displayed are a kind of more comfortable futon that open up for additional sleeping. We liked them because they don't resemble anything like an all-wood-frame-with-cushion futon. Instead, these sofa beds are leather or fabric, including the frame, making the piece much less austere, and in our opinion, more "comfy." Of special note, as you walk in there are some really wonderful wind chimes. These are made by a musician so the sound they produce is something unique. A great present for someone you know, or someone even more special, like you(!), these chimes can make your home sing with the wind. Lovely. So, if you're looking to make a little change in your surroundings, or if you're looking to make a BIG change, if you need a beautiful hostess gift or wedding present, a bar mitzvah or communion present, or any kind of present, stop and visit Eva's Home Decor. Your eyes will be dazzled and you just might find what you're searching for, affordably priced. JESSIE CREEK WINERY & THE INN AT JESSIE CREEK CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, NEW JERSEY. This month our friends Sandy and Hank joined us for a visit to the Jessie Creek Winery in Cape May Court House, New Jersey. Home to a growing vineyard and a charming bed and breakfast called the Inn at Jessie Creek, I had heard that the winery had won both a silver and a bronze medal for two of their wines placed in the New Jersey State Wine Growers Association competition. Quite a coup for the young winery started in 2010. The winery is the work of devotion of Bruce Morrison and Art Reale. Some of you may recognize Bruce as Dr. Bruce Morrison of Huntingdon Valley. A native son of the "valley," Bruce has found a second passion in building an evolving first class bottle of wine. Art Reale, one of his partners in this enterprise, is an "Art" of all trades. Builder, cook, and upfront man, he's the entertaining onsite manager handling day-to-day details. According to Art, Bruce is the "taster" with his palate determining which direction the wine will go. As you enter the property just off Rte. 47, you feel as though you're entering the rustic world of Tuscany. Looking out at the acres of vines, this was just what I expected a vineyard to look like. Bruce gave us a walking tour of the property and pointed out the different vines producing the different grapes for the different wines. "One of the secrets to good wine making," he said, "is the soil. Soy beans were originally raised on this soil so it is rich and prime for grapes." He talked to us about the irrigation, the barrels they use, how they protect the vines from insects, plans for expansion, etc. We could hear and see his excitement. It put a smile on our faces. We went to the winery for a tasting. It was a beautiful weekend day and we were anxious to help the guys celebrate their award winning wines. I especially asked Hank to join us because through the years he has shared his love for good wine. I thought he could add some good "commentary." 28 • June 2012 • www.theuptightsuburbanite.com Bruce and Art have constructed a big building for the tastings. It also holds a large hall where functions are held; weddings, special parties, reunions, business conferences. Art directed our tasting as we lingered along a long counter. He explained, "You start with the lighter varieties and then move into the stronger wines." For me, that was interpreted as, "First you start with the whites and then you go to the reds." The Chardonney was up on deck first. Hank instructed us in determining the alchohol content of the wine. This wine was high on the chart! We gently moved through the whites, including Pinot Grigio, and started on the reds. He offered us an interesting hybrid called Chambourcin. (Allen liked it so much we came home with a bottle.) Finally we were going to taste the award winners; the Silver Medal winner Cabernet Sauvignon and the Bronze Medal winner, the Merlot. Mmmm... The tasting offered us five or six different wines and, as Sandy said, we were feeling a little mellow at the end! Continued on page 29 To Advertise Call: (215) 510-5972 Continued from page 28 As Allen and I are familiar with some of New England's best Bed & Breakfasts, I asked if we could see the rooms at Jessie Creek. Bruce was only too happy to give us the grand tour of this gracious inn built in 1846. The rooms are lovely. Beautiful linens, crisp coverlets, cozy, comfortable furniture, each room has a heater for those cold nights...AND, each room has its own modern bathroom. Sandy and I really liked the bathrooms and the bed dressings. Adjacent to the dining room and a sitting room, Art does the prep work for all meals in a kitchen that everyone can see. Bruce added that for large parties, weddings, etc., guests have access to all the facilities at Jessie Creek. Clearly, overnight accommodations onsite is a great convenience. (It adds to the fun, too!) We had a great time sharing in the excitement at Jessie Creek Winery. Bruce Morrison and Art Reale have built a charming retreat from big city life. Literally. With their own sweat and toil, buildings have been constructed, tile has been laid and bathrooms designed and built. They've created a winery that can be counted among the best in New Jersey. And as they say, their dream is "Now a Reality." It certainly is! • We refill all major brands • 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed If you're near Cape May and looking for a California Napa Valley experience in our own backyard, take a drive to Jessie Creek Winery. Tastings are daily 11-5 and both gentlemen are there on weekends "manning the store." Art is there 24/7. You'll have an entertaining time and may get a bit "mellow." And you will have escaped to the gentle sounds of calm and quiet that only happy vines can offer!! P.S. After our visit, we travelled about 15 minutes further on the Parkway to Cape May. Enjoyed the rest of our day strolling the promenade and oogling the beautiful Victorian homes. A late lunch/early dinner completed our outing. It's a day recommended by this now very un-uptight suburbanite!!!
