Montefiore’s move to
Beachwood from Mayfield
Road in Cleveland Heights, in
1991, was only the beginning.
As the changing needs of
the community emerge, we
continually seek ways to
enhance our programs and
services to meet the needs of
our aging Jewish and general community.
Over the years, we have significantly
grown our memory care services by adding
two outstanding memory care assisted
living residences – The Willensky Residence
on our Beachwood campus and The David
and Freda Robinson Residence on The Weils
campus in Chagrin Falls. Additionally, we
launched our In-Home Memory Care and
Home Smart Memory Technology programs,
offering services and support to enable
individuals with dementia to stay in a home
environment as long as possible.
With an increased need for Jewish
hospice and palliative care, we built the
Maltz Hospice House and expanded our
Vinney hospice services in the community,
now having a full-time hospice and palliative
care medical director. (Read about Dr.
Meredith Driscol on page 6).
Our Weils campus has expanded greatly
to further meet the needs of seniors in the
Chagrin Valley area and now offers assisted
living, a rehabilitation therapy pavilion, along
with the new memory care pavilion. Another
focus has been to increase awareness of our
home health care and private care services.
Over the past 25 years, sustaining our
commitments has been challenging, with this
past year being no exception. The percentage
of the Cleveland Jewish population 65 years
and older has slightly declined, while the
number of people over 75 has increased
significantly – with this segment requiring
more care and attention. We have been able
to meet these needs through the generosity
of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland,
grants from the community and our own
supporters through their donations to our
Annual Sustaining Campaign to maintain our

The 2015 Bea Bernstein Volunteer of the Year
Award Recipients – The Dynamic Duo

The Bea Bernstein Volunteer of the
Year Award, which is named after former
Volunteer Director Millie Klein’s sister, is
presented to an individual or individuals
who exemplify the characteristics of an
outstanding volunteer by continually
demonstrating exceptional commitment,
devotion, loyalty and dependability
by enhancing the lives of Montefiore
residents. This year’s Bea Bernstein
Volunteer of the Year recipients are Jerry
Goldberg and Marlene Krause, a dynamic
duo who have been entertaining residents
with their flute and piano skills for more
than 16 years!
During their time here at Montefiore,
Jerry and Marlene, combined, have
contributed more than 2,200 volunteer
hours. They first began performing
together at Mount Sinai Hospital in
Cleveland, and after its closing in 1996,
this pair decided to bring the healing
power of music to our residents and staff.
Jerry and Marlene perform on a weekly
basis in resident dining rooms where both
residents and staff members are amazed
by their remarkable ability to play any tune

commitment to providing a caring and safe
community for residents to enjoy regardless
of their ability to pay.
The community’s response to our
2015-2016 Annual Sustaining Campaign
was overwhelming, raising $438,000 to help
fill the gap between the cost of care and
Medicaid reimbursement (87% of our longterm care residents are on Medicaid) while
supporting the exemplary care we provide
residents.
As part of our community engagement,
we once again held a very successful
Home Run-5K Run/Walk & 1M Walk in late
August. This fun, family-friendly event with
more than 400 participants of all ages, is
becoming our signature event. Thank you to
all those who participated!
As The Montefiore Foundation chair,
I would like to recognize the dedicated
commitment of our Foundation department
including Foundation Director Debbie
Rothschild and her team, which includes
Melissa Adell and Alyssa Rothstein,
Foundation associates and Denise Pease,
Foundation administrative assistant.
Of course, it is the entire Montefiore
team that provide excellent care on a daily
basis or we would be “just another nursing
home.”

Meet Our New Life
Enrichment Team!
In order to realize our mission and vision of
providing innovative and enriching programs
for our residents, we formed a new Life
Enrichment department (formerly Activities)
including familiar faces, some with new
roles, as well as new additions to the team.
Iuliia Marshall will assume a new role as
Life Enrichment Manager in addition to
continuing her work supporting Mandel 2.
She will collaborate with the entire team
to deliver innovative programs that bring
enjoyment and hope. Iuliia will also continue
developing special programs highlighting
arts, culture and humanities. Iuliia is Activity
Director Certified Advanced, (MEPAP1 and
MEPAP2), Dementia Practitioner Certified
and a Cognitive Stimulation instructor.
Kim Phillips will assume a new role as Life
Enrichment Assistant Manager in addition
to supporting Mandel 3. She will work
collaboratively with the team on building
enhanced exercise, drama and memory
programs that our residents have come
to appreciate. Kim will coordinate the life
enrichment calendar and documentation
tracking. Kim is Activity Director Certified
(MEPAP1).
Josie Love will continue in her role as Life
Enrichment Coordinator supporting Myers 2,
including leading a pilot program on memory
and sensory stimulation. Josie is Activity
Director Certified (MEPAP1) and will continue
to apply her love of music and our residents
in all her programs.
Sharlene Armstead, our newest addition, is
the Life Enrichment Coordinator supporting
Myers 3. Sharlene brings enthusiasm and
creative programming ideas to turn the
ordinary into extraordinary. Sharlene is
Activity Director Certified Advanced (MEPAP1
and MEPAP2).
Latasha Jackson, another new addition to
the team, is the Life Enrichment Assistant.
Latasha assists with preparing for programs
and gathering residents, especially on
weekends.
Leroy Parmer is the Life Enrichment Bus Driver
who brings warmth and kindness to our
residents as they attend outings and trips.

Meet Ivy Kopit
Ivy Kopit, Manager of Senior
Living Admissions and
Community Relations at The
Weils.
We are thrilled to welcome Ivy
to The Weils team! Ivy comes
to us from The Fountains and
Stratford Commons Assisted Living owned by
Kindred Healthcare. Her role as Senior Living
Consultant encompassed admissions, marketing
and community relations. Ivy’s community
and professional relationships coupled with
her experience in resident retention, strong
communication skills and building census make
her the perfect fit for The Weils.
Before Ivy developed a passion for helping
seniors, she was with The Jewish Big Brother
Big Sister Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters
of Greater Cleveland and The Littlest Heroes.
Her volunteer experience includes serving as a
past board member at the Mandel JCC, Fairhill
Center for the Aging and United Way. Welcome

In the midst of a contentious
world, fraught with anguish, a
glimmer of light has appeared
in Israel. An outstanding
neuroscientist, Professor Dimitrios
Karussis, a former Greek national,
not Jewish, who fell in love with
Israel, is conducting research at the famous
Hadassah Hospital with stem cells and making
remarkable progress there with diseases
formerly thought incurable, such as Lou Gehrig’s
Disease (ALS), Multiple Sclerosis and others.
The secret is to use stem cells from
the patient’s own body, cultivate them in
the laboratory, reproduce them in the tens
of millions and then reinject them into
the patient’s own body, with notable and
identifiable results. This research is being
replicated in major medical centers around
the world, including our own Mayo Clinic in
Rochester, MN and Massachusetts General
Hospital in Boston.
One Israeli, a former marathon runner,
suffering from Multiple Sclerosis, now seriously
disabled, found great relief after one treatment
with his own stem cells explained further,
“The day after the treatment, a junior doctor
asked me to lift my leg up in the air. Normally,
she would put her little finger on my leg and
it would fall back onto the couch, but I could
actually keep my leg up on my own. I remember
her leaving my room and I just cried…seventy
two hours later I went for a run.”
But what is most impressive about Professor
Karussis is his high esteem for the Israeli people.
In his own words, “I definitely think that this
thirst for doing new things and having no limits
is an Israeli characteristic. The patients in Israel
are very open to new approaches and are not
conservative. This has helped us…this mentality
that people in Israel believe in the future. They
believe in innovation. This is what makes the
country so progressive in the field of research.”
Belief in the future. Can there be any other
way? It is this hope, this optimism that has
sustained our people since the beginning.
In the seven weeks leading up to Rosh
Hashanah, our prophets only offered hope and
consolation. Even in Israel’s darkest hour, after
the destruction of The Temple in Jerusalem,
Isaiah had the courage to stand forth and
proclaim, “Truly the Lord has comforted Zion.
Comforted all her ruins. Gladness and joy shall
abide there, Thanksgiving and the sound of music.”
May the coming New Year be a year of
brightness, healing and hope for all.

Meredith Driscol, MD, FACP, HMDC
Medical Director of Vinney Hospice and Palliative Care of Montefiore
and Maltz Hospice House
We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Meredith Driscol as the full-time
Medical Director of our Vinney Hospice and Palliative Care and
Maltz Hospice House teams. Dr. Driscol trained at Indiana University
School of Medicine and completed fellowships in Hospice and Palliative Medicine
at Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Pain and Symptom Management at MD Anderson
Cancer Center in Houston, and Oncology and Hematology at University Hospitals
Case Medical Center. She practiced for the UH Ireland Cancer Center and has held
positions in hospice and palliative care with several community agencies. Most
recently she served as Medical Director of Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Louis B.
Stokes Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Cleveland.
Dr. Driscol has received numerous academic honors and awards and has published
and presented on a variety of clinical topics including hospice and palliative care,
pain and symptom management, and end-of-life care. She is a board certified
Hospice Medical Director (HMDC) and has board certifications in Internal Medicine
and Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
Tammy Pakiz, RN, BSN, CHPN
Clinical Manager for Maltz Hospice House
Tammy brings 20 years of direct care experience and hospice
management, including inpatient management of the Hospice Care
Center for Hospice of the Western Reserve and the Harry R. Horvitz
Center for Palliative Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic’s main campus.
Tammy has been certified in hospice and palliative care nursing for 12 years and is
a Reiki practitioner. We welcome Tammy back to Montefiore, as her first full-time
position as a hospice RN case manager was in the late 1990s with our program then
known as NCJW/Montefiore Hospice.
Sherry Thomas, RN, BS-Public Health
Interim Director of Nursing (DON)
We are pleased to introduce Sherry Thomas, RN, BS-Public Health, as
the interim Director of Nursing (DON) at Montefiore. Sherry will be
responsible for all clinical operations in the nursing home and The
Willensky Residence, our memory care assisted living community.
Sherry brings a wealth of experience as a director of nursing in long-term and shortterm care and as a nurse clinical consultant in Florida and Ohio. She has expertise in
wound care, quality improvement and staffing and has proven herself to be a great
asset to our nursing team. Sherry will continue in this role as we look for a Director
of Nursing to lead our clinical operations.

Neil Chakoff is the deputy
director of purchasing at
Cuyahoga Metropolitan
Housing Authority.
Neil has a wealth of
architectural, design and
construction expertise
with both commercial and
residential real estate. As a lay leader,
he assisted with fundraising at the
Wexner Heritage Village in Columbus
from 2009-2011. Neil previously served
as the Director of Construction at
Apple American Group and owned
his own company, Neil Chakoff Facility
Management, Inc. for 18 years. Neil
studied architecture at the University
of Cincinnati and received his B.S. in
Building Construction from Auburn
University.
Marti Davis has served
in numerous volunteer
capacities with the
Jewish Federation of
Cleveland, including Lion
of Judah and Ruby Lion
of Judah Co-chair as well
as serving on the JFC
Allocations committee. She is a member
of Cleveland Clinic’s Seidman Cancer
Center Leadership Council. Marti is no
stranger to Montefiore having served on
several committees including the Annual
Home Run/Walk, Montefiore, Memories
and Mimosas brunch and is a co-chair for
the upcoming vocal talent competition,
Shining Star CLE. Marti graduated with
a BA from Miami University of Ohio
and received a J.D. from The Ohio State

for our second annual Home Run held at the Cleveland Clinic Lyndhurst campus.
This event raised $70,000 to support Montefiore’s Annual Sustaining Campaign.

PERMANENT IRA CHARITABLE
ROLLOVER EXTENSION BENEFITS
MONTEFIORE DONORS!
Last December, we received wonderful
news of Congress passing the permanent IRA
Charitable Rollover Act of 2015. This law allows
you to permanently transfer money from your
IRA account directly to Montefiore. In fact, it
may give you the opportunity to save significant
tax dollars, while supporting our residents,
patients and their families.
Since you first started putting money
toward your retirement fund, you’ve been
accruing enormous amounts of money. Thanks
to the IRA Charitable Rollover Act of 2015,
you will receive an income tax deduction from
the year you made the contribution to the
IRA and any growth in the accounts would go
untaxed until you withdraw from your account.
What a wonderful opportunity to have a
current income tax deduction and a deferral in
recognizing any gains! Now, however, the tax
bill from those years of deferred tax is coming
due for many of you who are at age 70 ½, as
the IRS requires you to take distributions from
these accounts. This forced withdrawal is called
Required Minimum Distribution (RMD).
For some of you, this additional income
may mean additional taxes. This extra revenue
may push some into a higher tax bracket and
may result in a tax on social security payments.
Fortunately, there is a solution. The IRA
Charitable Rollover Act of 2015 allows you, as a
donor, the opportunity to make a tax-free gift
from your IRA account to Montefiore – the IRS
will allow up to a $100,000 gift for 2016. Your
charitable gift can be used to satisfy your RMD,
and it is 100% tax-free!
This significant incentive means you do not
have to declare the RMD, which keeps your gift
from being taxed, and also avoids the other
unfavorable effects mentioned. In addition, a
gift of this type will not cause a reduction in
personal exemptions or allowable deductions.
Please be sure to check with your tax advisor as
to how this type of gift will affect you personally.
This process is simple and can make a
real difference in the lives of our patients and
residents. You will benefit on many levels.,
but most importantly, you will be gratified to
know that you have made a lasting impact.

Transport Van!
We are thrilled to announce that a shining new
transport bus (pictured below), specifically designated
for use by those within Montefiore’s Memory Care
Network, is now part of our vehicle fleet!
Access to this vehicle, which seats up to nine
individuals, allows residents in our two memory
care assisted living communities – The Willensky
Residence (on Montefiore’s campus) and The David
and Freda Robinson Residence (on The Weils campus)
to participate in community outings such as visiting
restaurants, museums, sporting events and parks
as well as using it for medical appointments. For
clients enrolled in Montefiore’s In-Home Memory
Care program, this vehicle allows easy access for
transportation to medical appointments, errands and
community outings.
Everyone from residents, their families and staff
are excited about the arrival of this Goshen Coach.
Memory Care Manager Kristen Morelli says, “This
beautiful and much-needed van is a great resource
for our memory care community – it has all the bells
and whistles – everything we could ever possibly need!”
Our sincere thank you to the Northeast Ohio
Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) for
awarding us this grant to purchase the van to
“enhance mobility of seniors and individuals with
disabilities.”

Temple for devoting 50 years of volunteer service to the
residents of Montefiore! You exemplify the true meaning
of tikkun olam – repairing the world – in all that you
contributed and continue to do for our residents and
families. Your monthly visits since 1966 have meant the
world to the thousands of residents whose lives and hearts
you’ve touch through your generous spirit.
Residents and family members look forward to
your Mitzvah Corp programs, held the first Saturday
of the month, offering wonderful entertainment and
refreshments. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts
and so appreciate all that you do to put smiles on our

Important Numbers
In partnership with JCC Early Childhood Education, we
are launching the first of four quarterly, intergenerational and
interactive programs for residents on Sunday, September 25, 2016
at 10:30 am at Montefiore. These hour-long programs, led by
Debbie Friedman, Mandel JCC Family Place coordinator, invite young families to spend
time with Montefiore residents, while exploring seasonal Jewish themes. All activities
will include music, hands-on creative projects, storytelling and snack time. Special
thanks to Jewish Education Center of Cleveland (JECC) for the 2016-2017 Shoresh grant.
