SEPTEMBER
02
by Recording Secretary, Muriel Fallon
Meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Jim Ingham with approximately
55 members and guests present. The pledge of allegiance was then recited.
Minutes: June minutes appeared in the Chum Line.
Treasurer’s Report: John Raybon gave the financial report as of July 1st. Checking
balance $11,775.44; accounts receivable - $250.00, and inventory - $909.55; for a
total of $12,934.99. Motion was made by Chuck Radloff and seconded by Dean Roberts to accept the minutes and financial reports. Unanimous.
Weigh Master: Capt. Mike Vickers advised members that Florida’s resident saltwater anglers who fish from shore or a structure affixed to the shore will need to buy a
$7.50 (plus admin. and handling fees) shoreline fishing license by August 1st, unless
they have a regular resident saltwater fishing license. Florida residents may prefer to
buy the regular recreational saltwater license that covers them, no matter where they
fish or saltwater species. Florida has always required nonresidents to have a license
when fishing from shore, and they will still need to purchase a regular nonresident
saltwater fishing license. The new shoreline saltwater fishing license for residents
goes on sale July 15th. It provides all of the same exemptions as a regular license,
including senior citizens, children, disabled people who meet certain qualifications,
active-duty military personnel while home on leave, and anglers who fish from a
licensed pier. In addition, the shoreline license requirement includes anglers drawing
food stamps, temporary cash assistance or Medicare. For more information, go to
MyFWC.com.
Capt. Vickers announced that 31 fish were weighed in during June. 22 of these fish
placed in our Year Long Tournament. A 9# 10oz Trout caught by Brian Willard sets a
new club record. The June Kingfish Tournament had 8 fish weighed in. The winners
are: 1st place – Michelle Willard (9# 9oz); 2nd place – Brian Willard (9# 6oz; and 3rd
place – Brian Willard (9# 6oz).
Weigh-in stations for the club are at Jake’s Highbridge; Flagler Pier; Big Al’s; Flagler
Bridge; Palm Coast Marina; and Bing’s Landing.
Share-a-Ride: Bill LoDico – no report
OLD BUSINESS:
Surf Tournament (June 13): Mike McCray and Chuck Radloff – The tournament
was successful with 55 people attending. All the prizes were given out and it came in
under budget. There was a suggestion to move this tournament to Marineland
beach. They will look into a change of location.
Inshore Tournament (Sept. 11/12): Mike Vickers and John Raybon – Advertising have been sold on the shirt except for 2 spots on the front. More sponsors are
needed for the bags and scoreboard. There are over 7,000 people in Flagler County
with special needs. All donations for the Special Olympics will stay right here. Any
member who would like to be a sponsor or know a potential sponsor should contact
Mike Vickers for an informational packet.
NEW BUSINESS:
Guys and Dolls Tournament (July 11) Jeff Fehrenkamp – Tournament is at
Bings from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Weigh in will be between 2 – 3 p.m. All eligible inshore fish will be weighed in. There will be 2 prizes in 3 categories. Food will be
served. Male guests must pay $10; no charge for women or juniors. Deadline to
sign up is July 8th. This is a team tournament and no boat is needed.
Dick McCleery introduced the topic of Wind, Tide and Water Temperature measuring devices installed and maintained by the State of Florida on the north dock of
Bing’s Landing. They communicated this important data to a variety of web sites
and are no longer operational. Dick suggested that perhaps FCSFC would look into
this and create a partnership with an entity such as: St. Johns River Water Management District, Florida Sea Grant or one of our high schools as part of their science/
technology program. Dick McCleery will look into this further and get back to the
members.
GUEST SPEAKER: Capt. Tom Winrow, a professional fisherman from St.
Augustine, spoke on catching Tarpon near the beach. Capt. Winrow gave an indepth talk about how to locate Tarpon by finding the pods of bait fish just off shore.
Look for the pods as they swim into the wind. He recommends taking a slow approach using your trolling motor. He also suggests netting a few bait fish and keeping them alive and fresh. Net more as you need them. As you look at the action of
the pod you may see the Tarpon either in the middle or on the edges of the pod.
Capt. Tom also reminded that Redfish may be feeding below the pod so put some
weight on your line and go below the bait fish. The best time to see the pods along
the beach is to go north in the morning and south in the afternoon. He also reminded members not to gaff the Tarpon, so they can be released safely. For more
information, you may contact Capt. Tom Winrow at (904) 315-9364 or
www.stillwatercharters.net.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
There will be no Club Tournament in August due to
the heat of the month and the slowness of fishing.
Good time for tackle and boat repairs during the
down time.
Look below in the Chum Line for reports of the
Guys & Dolls Tournament results and awards. Very
successful tournament; thanks to Chairman Jeff
Fehrenkamp and the entire Fehrenkamp “Team” for
their efforts.

Everybody was a winner Saturday, July 11th at the
Guys and Dolls tournament with incredible weather
for fishing. We had a great turn out, with over 60
people showing up and plenty of pizza to eat.
The fishing was a little slow for some and good for
others. In fact we had 10 teams that came to the
weigh-in and 6 winners! They are: most species 1st
place Amy and Jim Britton $100.00, 2nd place Kirk
Bush and Gwen Bush $50.00. Most weight 1st place

and Chris Herrera $50.00. Biggest fish 1st place
Theodore and Gregory Wilk $100.00, and 2nd place
Pam and Jeff Fehrenkamp $50.00.
The winner of the rod and reel was Jared Wannemacher a future pro fisherman! And the 50/50 went
to no other than John Baggott.
Congratulations to everyone, and big thank you to
Mike McCray, Bob Cyr, John Raybon, Becky, Greg
and Pam Fehrenkamp for all their hard work.
See you next year!
The payout will be $4,600.00 in five places per species, which are Drum, Flounder, Redfish and Trout
and based on 130 anglers. Registration fee is $45.00
per angler and $10.00 for Junior Anglers 12 and under (Juniors will be awarded trophies).
Each adult angler will get a tournament shirt, gift
bag, food ticket and raffle ticket. Pick up your entry
forms at the next meeting and sign up early. Late fee
of $5.00 will apply after September 9th.
The mandatory Captains meeting will be held September 11th at Barbara Jeans Restaurant in European

Starting your mornings off with topwater plugs on
the flats, ICW or jetties will produce everything
from Redfish to Tarpon. The key to success is being on the “spot” before the sunrise. Redfish will
be cruising creeks and the flats at low tide looking
for shrimp, pogies and mullet, look for the wakes
and redfish pushing onto the banks. High tide reds
can be caught hanging over oyster beds and along
grass edges. Big breeder Redfish will be lurking
the deep waters of the area Inlets, cut pogies or
crabs on a Daiichi 7/0 circle hook with enough
weight to hold bottom will put a big bend in the
rod.

Snook will be worth a shot along Bridges and residential canal docks at night and first light, live lining pinfish or select shrimp will fool linesiders into
the boat. Spoons have worked well as well soft
plastics like Fish Bites Jerk Bait.
Pogies pods are on the beach and rolling and crashing tarpon can be seen shadowing pods. Free lining
pogies on a Daiichi 13/0 circle hook on the outside
of the bait pods should produce silver kings. Other
catches on the beach will include Spanish Macs,
Blue fish and big Jacks. For back country tarpon an
early start is a must and free lining a live shrimp
tossed in front of a rolling tarpon should get their
attention. Make sure to sharpen the hooks for best
bet hook ups.
Guest speaker will be Capt. Brian Walker. He will
speak about jettie fishing for Bull Redish.
Captain Brian Walker specializes in light tackle
fishing, inshore and coastal fishing. Inshore fishing trips target Redfish, Trout, and Flounder year
round, and we catch Sheepshead, Jack Crevelle
and Black Drum seasonally. Fishing the coastal
waters out of St. Augustine and Jacksonville, we
target Bull Reds, Cobia, Sharks, Kingfish and
Tarpon.
