68th North Carolina Azalea Festival | 35 36 | 2015 Souvenir Book Proud to support the North Carolina Azalea Festival. Since 1948, the North Carolina Azalea Festival has encouraged volunteerism and civic participation as it contributes to the region’s economy and promotes the unique qualities of Wilmington’s river-to-the-sea community. We applaud the staff of North Carolina Azalea Festival for living their mission each and every day. “To be nationally recognized as a showcase for the community’s rich array of artwork, gardens, history and culture through recreational, educational and family-oriented events.” BB&T. Be Courageous. Be You. became Mallory’s mantra during her reign as Miss America 2013 and continues to be her philosophy on life today. Through her participation in the Miss America Organization, she found her passion in advocacy, most specifically for education in regard to Child Sexual Abuse. In addition to child abuse, Mallory has become a voice for confidence, selfacceptance and body-image, as well. In an effort to share her story, Mallory has been featured on national television shows such as Good Morning America!, The View, Wendy Williams and Anderson Cooper, as well as hundreds of local news sources. Now, Mallory continues to work with several national and local organizations such as Safe Horizon, Prevent Child Abuse America and is one of the Nationals Spokeswomen for the World Be Free Campaign. In NYC, Mallory volunteers with several other service organizations such as City Chicks 4 Charity, No Kid Hungry and God’s Love We Deliver. While serving as Miss America, Mallory was recognized as an Influential Woman at the 2013 Forbe’s Women’s Summit. Today, being the only student in the history of the Fashion Institute of Technology to receive the Presidential Award while enrolled, Mallory continues her education utilizing her Miss America Scholarship while continuing to pursue opportunities to influence others through media platforms. 68th North Carolina Azalea Festival | 39 Azalea 2015 Stay updated throughout the Azalea Festival with StarNewsOnline.com/Azalea. Selection for membership in the Guards is rigorous, and only those who demonstrate the highest military standards are chosen. The intricate maneuvers performed by the Guards, the Citadel Series, is completed without any verbal commands. Many hours of practice are required to achieve the peak of perfection. Each man works as a small part of a single unit, contributing to an overall image of exactness, precision, and military spit and polish. b u l A C z a n e l e d r a a B G elles© r a e F e Cap Beautiful young girls wearing hoop-skirted Antebellum dresses first appeared as greeters in the gardens during the Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour in 1969. Mrs. Harley Vance then president of the Cape Fear Garden Club, is credited with introducing this idea. Seven young ladies, five of whom were daughters of club members, donned dresses worn to a southern ball or made by Mrs. Augusta Counts. When the girls sat in the gardens that year, the concept of the Cape Fear Garden Club, Inc. Azalea Belles was born. The Belles have grown from that original seven to one hundred thirty-six in 2014 Most of the dresses worn today are supplied by three approved dressmakers, Alma Fennell, Kay Counts Godwin, and Debbie Scheu. The Azalea Belles have truly become ambassadors for the city of Wilmington and have come to symbolize the festival season as much as the flowers they represent. The Azalea Belles enhance the beauty of many events during the festival, but their primary duty continues to be as greeters to visitors in the gardens on the Azalea Garden Tour. Azalea Belles must be sponsored by a member of the Cape Fear Garden Club. Priority is given to daughters and granddaughters of club members, followed by high school seniors and juniors who live in New Hanover County. The Azalea Belle Committee is chaired by Cape Fear Garden Club members: Karen Smith, Chair, Linda McCall and Heda Walrep, co-chairs.
