State of the School Report
Catholic Schools Week—January 2016
St. Edward School is a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. The
National Blue Ribbon Award is a prestigious award given by the U.S. Department of Education. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements are
being made in students' levels of academic achievement.
Student Population
Since 1982, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has honored
America's most successful schools. St. Edward School received the Blue
Ribbon Award for being a "high performing" school. This means the
achievement of the school's students places the school in the top 15
percent in the nation in reading (or English language arts) and mathematics as measured by a nationally normed test.

Technology
All students have scheduled classes in the computer lab. With the use of special funding SMART
Boards have been purchased for each classroom. Our computer lab has 25 computers thanks to a
grant from the Ashland County Community Foundation. The seventh and eighth grade students
have iPads for use in the classroom. In addition, St. Edward School teachers are trained in using
current technology including SmartBoards, iPads, Apple TV’s, Accelerated Math, Accelerated
Reader, and several other educational software and web-based programs. All classroom teachers
have iPads for instruction. Primary grades also use Osmo with iPads for instructional centers. The
Science/Spanish Room has a BrightLink Interactive Projector which connects to a laptop,
iPhone,iPad, Tablet, iPod, or document camera. This device allows the white board to be interactive.

Catholicity
Catholic Identity is a target area for our school improvement plan. We have a Faith Development Committee. This committee plans various activities throughout the year which focus on
Catholic beliefs and faith traditions. Our focus for our school improvement plan is the Catholic
Social Teachings and Christian Morality.
Literature
Students will have read hundreds of books as they progress through the primary grades.
Students in grades 4 through 8 will have completed nearly fifty required books and plays including many classics. Our library now hosts over 6000 books.
Math
The Saxon Math Program begins in Pre- kindergarten and continues through the eighth grade.
Many students in eighth grade will complete Algebra I and get high school credit and some will
be exposed to Algebra II. In 2013 the school implemented the web version of Accelerated
Math which provides enrichment as well as remediation for students on all levels. Teachers are
implementing best practices for instruction in math computation. This is a target area for our
school improvement plan.
The Arts
The Visual and Performing Arts curriculum provides students with the opportunity to share their
talents and gifts in music, art, and drama. Student art work is displayed throughout the school
along with prints of master artists. An annual art show allows students to share their talents with
the community. The music program is closely tied to the weekly liturgy and students play
rhythm instruments and sing. Students act and sing in two all-school performances a year.
The Physical Education/Nutrition/Health curriculum focuses on physical, social,
emotional, and spiritual growth. Students participate in a wealth of activities that provide ample
opportunities for growth and success. Health instruction is implemented in all grades by a registered nurse.
Spanish
The Spanish curriculum is implemented in grades kindergarten through eight. Students learn
basic vocabulary, pronunciation, conversation, and grammar, as well as cultural lessons. Students in seventh and eighth grade who successfully complete the program earn high school
credit for Spanish I. We are now working for Spanish II credit as well.

Endowment
The St. Edward School Endowment is managed by the Ashland County Community Foundation. The
principal amount always remains in the endowment. Distributions from the endowment help to offset
the amount of money the parish spends to support the school. Building the endowment secures the
future of the school and helps to decrease the cost to the parish.
When parishioners designate money be sent to the school in memory of a loved one these funds are
used for special projects. Letters are sent to the donors describing how the money was used. If you
have questions regarding a specific memorial, please call the school and we would be happy to tell
you how the money was spent. Often these funds are used for an area that was of special interest to
the loved one.
St. Edward School is appreciative of special gifts designated for school use. If you would like more
information about leaving a bequest to the school, information is available through the school 419
289-7456, Ashland County Community Foundation 419 281–4733, or Fr. Rod Kreidler 419 2897224.
Scholarships
Scholarships are available in memory of the following beloved parish members:
The Jan and Vincent Richilano Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Madeline and Thomas Zupan Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Katie and Frank Fowler Memorial Scholarship Fund
Alumni scholarship available in 2017:
The Ellie Fossaceca Memorial Scholarship
All funds are limited to scholarship recipients entering the seventh or eighth grade at St. Edward
School.
If you are interested in establishing a scholarship fund or contributing to an existing scholarship fund,
please contact Suellen Valentine or Fr. Rod Kreidler.
