But compromising on safety is out of the question. Aeroplane tyres clock speeds higher than those of racing cars and carry weights no truck can ever hold.’ ‘My advice? Ask for a tour at one of the companies presented in this brochure. Tyre retreading is high-tech. Prepare to be surprised!’ FACTS AND FABLES Tyres for commercial vehicles, agricultural machines and earth-moving vehicles are increasingly being retreaded. Yet the preconceived notion that the quality of retreaded tyres is not on a par with that of new tyres remains a persistent one. Nothing could be further from the truth: a retreaded tyre has exactly the same quality as the original, new tyre. This is a proven fact. Tests have shown that the safety and reliability of retreaded tyres are the same as those of new tyres. retreaded commercial vehicle tyres and for the casings. One of the requirements is that the end product is tested by a certified organisation. Moreover, companies that retread commercial vehicle tyres must have a quality manual in place and are periodically audited by the ONE MILLION KILOMETRES authorities. ensures that the tyre is strong and durable. Modern CAREFUL INSPECTION OF THE CASING casings often last over one million kilometres. The tread A casing requiring retreading is subjected to a detailed rubber enveloping the carcass has a different compositi- inspection by an inspector using state-of-the-art specia- on, which is important to provide such properties as grip, list equipment. The tread, the shoulder and the bead are comfort, rolling noise and rolling resistance. However, it all checked for defects, weaknesses and structural wears much more quickly than the casing. But once worn damage. Only casings that are in perfect order are it can be retreaded, giving the casing a new lease on life. retreaded. The new tread rubber is firmly bonded to the A properly constructed casing, which is the heart of a tyre, carcass using a process called vulcanisation. A flat tyre along the motorway? Chances are that the tyre burst due to overheating as a result of underpressure or overload, not because it was just a remould. Every casing is subjected to a non-destructive test using such sophisticated technologies as Shearography. Using a hologram, an expert determines whether all steel-to-rubber connections are still intact and whether the casing is suitable for retreading. They will detect any imperfection. A EUROPEAN SEAL OF QUALITY The next question is whether retreading a tyre yields a high-quality end product. The answer is an unequivocal yes. Retreading tyres is a craft and covered by a mandatory European seal of quality. UN-ECE R109 sets quality requirements for the production process of When retreading a tyre, the new tread is bonded firmly to the casing. ‘How much would you like to save?’ Paul Maas | Director of Wetron Transport & Logistics: ‘A quick sum shows that you can save an enormous amount by retreading tyres. Say a new tyre for a truck costs 400 euros (after deduction of the residual value), and the costs for retreading that same tyre come to 200 euros that immediately saves you 200 euros. For an articulated truck with ten retreaded tyres that would constitute savings of 2,000 euros. Just imagine the savings on our entire fleet!’ ‘My advice? Ask for a quote for retreaded tyres from one of the VACO-recognised tyre specialists. Prepare to be amazed!’ THE BOTTOM LINE Let’s make no bones about it: the bottom line is that every company wants to make a profit, or at the very least break even. The lower the costs, the sooner that goal is reached. In national and international transport, the tyres of an articulated truck represent 2.5 to 3 percent of the operating costs as a whole. That may not seem much, but compare it to the many billions cut by the government time and again to close the budget deficit: that’s also just a matter of a few percent. LOWER PURCHASE PRICE LOW COST PER KILOMETRE The purchasing costs of a retreaded tyre are considerably On balance, this lower purchase price will translate into lower than those of a new tyre. Depending on the make a 35 to 50% lower cost price per kilometre, depending on and type, savings can be up to a few hundred euros the make, type or application. A structurally sound casing per tyre. And these are hard euros, too, for this is money has many lives. The better the quality of the casing, the you don’t have to spend while still getting the same more often it can be retreaded. That lowers the average quality tyre. price per kilometre even further. Calculation example for cost price per kilometre for a random type of commercial vehicle tyre Say: tyre life of 250,000 kilometres KILOMETRE COST PRICE PER Say: costs of a new tyre, after deduction of the residual value: 400 euros, retreaded tyre: 200 euros € 0,0016 € 0.0008 new tyres retreaded tyres ‘How sustainable would you like to be’ Wouter Maas | Director of Maas Markelo contracting and earth-moving firm: ‘Our company embraces corporate social responsibility. That shows in everything. From our employees’ commitment to the equipment we use. And that includes retreaded tyres.’ ‘My advice? Agriculture and industry must also be ready for the future. Awareness and responsibility for your surroundings play a big part in that. Ask one of the VACO-recognised tyre specialists about the sustainable character of retreaded tyres. Prepare to be delighted!’ PRESENT AND FUTURE Driving with retreaded tyres is a sustainable practice. We will refrain from waxing lyrical about the importance for you and your children, or about our living environment and corporate social responsibility. We’ll stick to the hard facts instead. They speak louder than anything. Without it costing you a penny, you are engaging in a sustainable practice when you use retreaded tyres. There is not a single argument not to opt for retreaded tyres. 75% LESS RAW MATERIALS* RECYCLING To begin with: a retreaded tyre requires some 75% less Even if a commercial vehicle tyre can no longer be raw materials. A new tyre requires almost 100 litres of retreaded, it can still be recycled. This can be done in crude oil and 60 kilograms of a diversity of other raw a variety of ways. In the great majority of cases, materials. Retreading a tyre requires only 30 litres of the tyres are shredded: the rubber is ground into tiny crude oil and 15 kilograms of other raw materials. pieces and re-used as infill for artificial turf or tiles for 80% LESS CO2 EMISSIONS* playgrounds, for example. Other types of high-quality reuse are also the order of the day. The production of a new truck tyre creates 220 kg of CO2, while this is only 39 kilos when retreading a tyre: a reduction of 80%! * Source: Bipaver Raw materials usage CO2 emission during production Petroleum CO2 EMISSION USAGE Other raw materials 60 kg 100 l 220 kg 15 kg 30 l new tyres retreaded tyres 39 kg new tyres retreaded tyres ‘How would you like your tyres?’ Bart Schmeink ǀ CEO Connexxion Holding: ‘To make it easier for passengers to get in, drivers park their buses practically against the kerb. That is why the retreaded tyres on our buses have extra protection on the sidewall. This way, the tyres do not have to be replaced early as a result of damage, lowering the costs per kilometre.’ ‘My advice? Ask your retreader which modifications can be made to meet your requirements. Prepare to be surprised!’ ALL AND SUNDRY All kinds of tyres can be retreaded, as long as the quality of the casing is good. The size of the tyre is not important: whether it is a tyre with a 25 cm diameter or one that is 4 metres tall, they can all be retreaded. As such, retreaded tyres are not only of interest for owners of commercial vehicles and buses, but also for greenkeepers, gardeners, agricultural workers, contracting firms, earth-moving specialists and industrial users, and even for drivers in tractor pulling competitions, race car drivers and drivers in 4x4 races. CUSTOMISED Tyre retreading can be customised to any application and made to meet all customer-specific modifications. Tyres on buses, learner cars, garbage trucks and street sweepers can be given additional protection on the sidewall, for instance, while vehicles in agriculture and horticulture often require additional lugs or a non-standard tread. In yet other cases, the composition of the tread rubber may be adjusted to make the tyre more wear-proof or give it less rolling resistance. When cultivating and harvesting high-grade turf, the tractor should not rip out the grass. The retreader designed a special tread for us that is not available on new tyres. Not only are the retreaded tyres cheaper, they also optimally prevent rutting and soil damage. Martijn Rienks | Director of Queens Grass At our building sites, we need very robust tyres that can stand some rough handling. We cannot afford a concrete mixer truck to have downtime due to a flat tyre. That’s why we use retreaded tyres made specially for us. They have high resistance to pinch shock. Ernest Schmitz | Technical Coordinator at Mebin ADVANTAGES OF CUSTOMISATION Customisation has many advantages. Retreaders can often divide spread the development costs of modification for a retreaded tyre over a number of vehicles, keeping the additional costs down. From a financial point of view, retreaded tyres can even be cheap due to their longer life. Moreover, modifications can prevent damage. And last but not least: a different tread with a lower rolling resistance may also yield important fuel savings. RESEARCH AND INNOVATION Set up over a century ago, the tyre retreading industry has always used traditional methods. As part and parcel of entrepreneurship, the industry continues to forge ahead and wants to manifest itself as a worthy competitor for the new tyre industry. Research and innovation with a view to improving products and optimising production processes are a matter of course. COOPERATION COMPARING PERFORMANCE To continue to increase the level of quality, the The second objective of the study is to be able to independent tyre retreading industry works together at compare the performance of retreaded tyres to that of both national and international level. TYPE APPROVAL The objective of the ReTyre study is two-fold. First of all, it aims to yield a uniform method to enable type approval of a retreaded tyre. First, the impact of a large number of specific properties on the performance of the retreaded tyre is being determined. All data are then processed into highly innovative software, which the industry uses to make an accurate prediction of the environmental and safety performance already in the design phase of the retreaded tyre.
