Dear Colleague - EOH Campaign Manager
Welcome to 2016, a year I believe will be a great year for both South Africa & EOH... and of course my wish for you too. Despite some recent hiccups in our economy, South Africa has a lot going for it, the people, the natural resources, the great democracy, free press, excellent infrastructure, a good manufacturing sector, world class financial services and a growing tourism industry around the beautiful nature and sunshine we so enjoy. Dear Colleague, The little noises in the system will be short lived and soon we will be heading for the great future we deserve. everything, we are forging ahead with the same drive and enthusiasm as ever before. We will continue to grow by investing in new products, services and territories. Our future as individuals, as a business and as a country is dictated by our attitude, positive thinking and a level of optimism. It is a selffulfilling prophecy… IF WE ARE POSITIVE ABOUT THE FUTURE, THE FUTURE WILL BE POSITIVE TO US! Have a great 2016. At a highlevel, the first day of the conference will see us focus on an overview of the businesses comprising the EOH MENA offering, including an overview of key offerings and solutions. The second day will shift the focus to break-away sessions, focusing on regional and industry-specific strategy formulation. We envisage utilising the third day of the conference for more informal, forum discussions around several topics concerning the broader MENA business, including an exhibition of key solution experts providing an opportunity to participants to meet the experts. Watch this space to find out more about what is happening in our new international regions. Talking to...CCS Construction Computer Software (CCS) focuses on dedicated software solutions specifically designed for the Construction and Mining industries. Their two products BuildSmart Cost Management and Candy Estimating and Project Control tie the financial processes to the physical processes of enterprise construction projects. Peter Cheney Joint MD of CCS When and how did you join EOH? I officially joined EOH in August 2015 through the acquisition of our company CCS. CCS currently provides end-to-end ERP systems for the construction industry. What are you proudest of in life? Of the South African construction industry as a whole and the level of expertise in our chosen field of construction IT. We market to 54 international countries across the world, with South Africa making up 0.5% of the entire world’s construction market! Quite an achievement. What is it like being one of the MD’s of CCS? Very satisfying- we love speaking to construction companies and seeing the “lights come on” when we talk about our products. There is such a need for the set of niche products which we offer; and of course it is great to be able to make such a difference to our customer’s businesses. What is one of the best things about working at EOH? The best part is undoubtedly EOH’s attitude and support towards our business, without being too prescriptive. EOH brings valuable advice and great insight into our business which we otherwise would not have had access to. Who has had the greatest influence on you in life? A young engineer by the name of Louis Lourens. I met Louis whilst working at an engineering design consulting practice prior to my studies. I asked Louis if he thought I could “make it” studying engineering, to which he responded “if you want it, you can have it”. The rest is history! Which of the EOH philosophies do you relate to the most in your personal and professional life and why? Best people. People 101%! You can have a great product but if you don’t have the right people it’s worth nothing. I must just add that I too prescribe to the Right 1st Time way of doing business. If you could share a meal with anyone, who would it be and why? The author Malcolm Gladwell who wrote a book called The Tipping Point. This has changed the way people throughout the world think about selling products and disseminating ideas. I would love to know how he got all that knowledge! Do you have a guilty indulgence? I eat! Chocolate is my nemesis, I am a complete chocoholic. When growing up I would get 5 shillings pocket money- all of which would be spent buying one huge slab of chocolate. If you could give one piece of advice to the people of EOH, what would it be? Stick to the EOH philosophy, because it really works… the values are well thought out and practical across the business. Peter Reynolds system - but this has actually had very little impact on our operations. Being part of EOH offers a good future for our staff and for CCS, and having access to all the services in EOH is of great benefit to us. When and how did you join EOH? Our company, CCS, was acquired by EOH. After 25 years of running my own company we were suddenly a small part of a large organisation – and the interesting thing is that not much changed. “Keep doing what you always do” was the mantra and that’s what we’ve continued to do. Who has had the greatest influence on you in life? The uncompromising ethics of my parents have been a big influence on my life and my approach to business. I have always tried to be straight forward and absolutely fair, and many of our most successful contracts have relied on a hand shake. Joint MD of CCS What are you proudest of in life? I’m extremely proud of the achievements that CCS has made. From humble beginnings CCS has become a very successful company used across the globe in the Construction and Mining industries. Behind this success is a team of special, innovative people who have developed this software and provide top-class support to our clients. I am very proud of our team, many of whom have been with CCS for over twenty years. What is it like being one of the MD’s of CCS? When the merger of CCS and BuildSmart was finalised in 2008 we decided to maintain the structure of each of the two companies and keep our titles as joint MDs. Peter Cheney is a very easy guy to work with and the success of the company over the last eight years would indicate that joint control can work. What is one of the best things about working at EOH? I haven’t had a boss for 25 years so not being the top dog was a bit of a shock to the Which of the EOH philosophies do you relate to the most in your personal and professional life and why? At CCS we strive to get it Right 1st Time, despite it being difficult given the very nature of our complex software systems. If you could share a meal with anyone, who would it be and why? My father, who was also a Civil Engineer, and passed away unexpectedly many years ago. I would love to catch up with him and recount the last 35 years of my life and the incredible changes in the world. On the other hand I am privileged to have my older son, Louis, working at CCS and now leading us into a new generation of the software. What do you do when stress levels are high? For me stress has been alleviated by my long and very successful marriage to my wife Liz who shares many of my interests and has always supported me in my focus on CCS. If you could give one piece of advice to the people of EOH, what would it be? Working for the shareholders is very important, but never forget that the client is king. 3 Sowing the seeds for international expansion EOH currently operates in over 50 countries outside of South Africa. This speaks to the noticeable demand for our unique expertise and product and service offerings which transcend international borders. Brian Gubbins, EOH Group Business Development Director Part of our expansion plan involves using the Intellectual Property (IP) that currently exists within EOH, namely software that we as EOH have built, which can be packaged and licensed for clients internationally. EOH international software currently includes Sybrin, Educos, Candy, BuildSmart, XDS, iMQS, eMID, Zoomout as well as various IP embedded within SMART Government and other clusters within EOH. We believe our software is globally competitive across the range of industries we serve. Initial markets which we will be looking to further expand into include the Middle East, Africa, North America, South America, Europe and Australia. ICT Key Account development Since the launch of the ICT Key Accounts Program over 18 months ago, we have made huge strides in the amount of collaboration between siloed business units within EOH. Our objective is to become more relevant and strategic to our key clients in the private sector. The Key Accounts Program has received positive feedback from all relevant stakeholders, and by implementing the program we have begun developing a better understanding of our clients objectives, strategies and challenges as a business. The role of our Key Account Directors is to facilitate collaboration within EOH, especially as they typically already own the C-Level client relationships in many of these accounts. They have a high-level understanding of the client’s key business drivers and provide insight and guidance to EOH employees wanting to engage with those customers. We will continue to strengthen our collaborative sales culture, by encouraging broader solution selling and exposing our clients to the full suite of EOH offerings, thus ensuring sustainable revenue streams. A monthly ICT sales update meeting plays host to discovery workshops which are held to gain better and deeper insights into our clients. To further compliment the program quarterly CIO Connect events are also held in Johannesburg and Cape Town. If you would like to gain exposure to the broader ICT division, please contact Dean Goddard for more information on [email protected] or +27 (83) 320 0951. 4 #BPO The rise of corporate wellness centers The steady rise in lifestyle diseases and associated absenteeism at work, have made corporates realise that employee wellness begins at work. Many corporates are following this global trend, but the health management platform developed by the company, One on One Group in conjunction with EOH Workplace Health & Wellness is a world first. In 2013 the Honourable Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi expressed concern about the explosion of lifestyle diseases facing the world. He said, ‘’Take me seriously when I say adopt a healthy lifestyle. It’s a time bomb.” Both for your quality of life and for the economy of the country. discounted gym rates, greater staff interaction and overall a healthier and happier staff. He says, “As far as I am aware, the integrated Smart Health Program where the corporate gym and clinic offers primary healthcare, preventative healthcare, gym and an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) in-house is a first. Our main focus is preventative healthcare and our services include the setting up of and facilitation of corporate wellness centers and programmes, supplying health and wellness professionals such as physiotherapists, biokineticists, dieticians, body stress release therapists and of course trainers. The gym and clinic work together to identify, prescribe and monitor any health conditions that can affect an employee’s health and work presence. According to Bruce Penprase, CEO of One on One Group, which designs and implements corporate wellness centers, the large take up for setting up corporate gyms is largely because it is beneficial to the companies productivity and increased staff retention, as well as has extensive benefits to the company’s employees. It seems many companies today are following forward thinking universal sage, Bill Gates. He says, “Dynamic companies invest in their people ensuring that they attract and retain top talent who in turn ensure radical growth and innovation.’ It is a holistic approach to wellness: a fun and exciting environment for staff to engage and get healthy, onsite health management tools, For more information on EOH Workplace Health & Wellness contact [email protected] or call 011 554 1930. EOH Workplace Learning Gauteng Department of Infrastructure and Development roadshow In partnership with EOH Workplace Learning, the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure and Development (GDID) has started implementation of an ICT Learnership Program for 504 National Youth Service learners in Gauteng. The National Youth Service (NYS) is a government initiative that aims to provide long-term and effective ways of reconstructing South African society by developing the abilities of young people through service and learning. In the context of the government’s commitment to transformation and social development, the NYS programme has mainstream youth development at heart and proactively addresses skills development, youth unemployment and poverty reduction. The roadshow headed by Ms Ouma Ngobeni-Sipoya, Deputy Director for the Expanded Public Works Programme, aims to address and inform learners selected for the ICT 504 NYS Learnership Program on what government is doing in the fight against unemployment. There are two reasons for power outages: the first is planned maintenance and customers are informed via various communication channels; the second is more onerous and potentially damaging to businesses and involves unplanned maintenance. Such maintenance may be required due to a number of factors: technical faults, cable theft, vandalism and even severe weather conditions can cause an interruption in power supply. City Power has invested extensively in the SAP ERP Suite over the past decade, but by introducing the new enterprise mobility management solution, City Power has now bolstered its infrastructure management system which subsequently leads to reduced repair time, lower costs and more efficient service delivery to customers. By empowering its workforce and balancing staff workload, City Power can also expect a direct improvement in productivity levels to the benefit of all aspects of the business. Brett Parker, Managing Director at SAP Africa, said: “Mobile technology offers numerous benefits to customers. Realtime data is accessible anywhere, anytime; decisions are based on correct information and can be made quicker, increasing a company’s agility; cost reduction is achieved through reduced travel time; and there is easy access to the data created through the use of multiple devices. City Power will have access to information relating to areas that are most affected by, for example vandalism, and can create and implement the necessary strategies timeously.” EOH has developed a customer-focused ecosystem that enables businesses to gain strategic insight, accelerate innovation, ensure return on investment, and achieve breakthrough results. We make organisations more effective through our people, skills, experience and depth of knowledge, clarity and partnership. We provide business advice and expertise – as well as the technologies that enable successful transformation and strategy implementation. The EOH ecosystem puts the collective knowledge and expertise of our experts at the disposal of our partners, striking a balance between the innovation necessary to adapt to changing conditions, and leveraging off proven best practices. We help organisations to align strategy with execution and address shortterm challenges whilst building a foundation for continued productivity and growth. The key retirement reform principles are as follows: Contribution tax deductibility is the same across all retirement funds. Employer contributions are included in the taxable income of employees as a fringe benefit. An employer contribution would be regarded as an employee/member contribution under the new regime for tax deductibility purposes. Employees’ tax deductibility of contributions will be limited to 27.5% of the greater of remuneration or taxable income, up to a yearly limit of R350 000. Any excess amounts over the limit of R350 000 will be carried over to the next tax year. Provident fund members’ savings/accrued fund up to 1 March 2016 are unaffected by the new legislation changes. Savings that are accrued after 1 March 2016, including investment growth, will be subject to the 1/3 cash and 2/3 annuitisation requirements which will be applicable across all types of retirement funds as per the new legislation. Tax free transfers between all approved funds will be allowed after 1 March 2016. The minimum amount (under which no annuitisation is required) will be increased from R75 000 to R247 500. For more information on this retirement reform please consult the EOH Intranet, or get in contact with Chris Ehlers from EOHAS on [email protected] Engineering News feature Highveld, an EOH company, assists employers in minimising their labour risk and reducing the administration associated with contractors. Highveld was recently featured in the labour relations issue of Engineering News with an article titled "Contingency plan to rescue employment of professionals". As an alternative to retrenching about 55 professional employees, a large facilities management company had partnered with contingent workforce solutions provider Highveld to rather transfer the employees to Highveld, providing adhoc employment for them. Highveld Sales & Marketing General Manager Jabu Banda explained that, owing to the weak economy, cost-cutting is commonplace and that the retrenchment of highly paid professionals is a significant way of doing this for many organisations. Jabu further explained that Highveld’s partnership with the facilities management company proves that alternative employment options can be arranged and are becoming a trend in a climate of slower economic growth. This came into effect 1 August 2014 and states that it is against the law to discriminate unfairly between the working conditions and remuneration of those employees doing the same work or work of equal value. Alongside this amendment goes the Code of Good practice on equal pay/remuneration for work of equal value that was published 1 June 2015. This code of good practice serves as a practical guideline to employers and employees on how to apply the principle of equal pay/remuneration for work of equal value in the workplace. It seeks to promote the implementation of pay/remuneration equity in the workplace by employers, employees, trade unions etc. through HR policies, practices and job evaluation processes. The Act requires that you analyse pay by using an accepted methodology or system. Like employment equity, pay equity is a target to be achieved over a period of time. Employers should put corrective actions in place (within specified timelines) to proactively correct and manage pay anomalies. EOH Human Capital Solutions has a management solution dashboard that will enable management to monitor and manage pay equity interventions inclusive of policy, practice and procedures, by providing intelligent internal comparative data that will be useful in making informed decisions based on equal pay for work of equal value.
