Vortech Maxflow Power Cooler
Installation Instructions
1993 - 1997 LT1 Camaro and Firebird
Congratulations on selecting the best performing and most
efficient aftercooler today... the Vortech Maxflow Power Cooler !
Before beginning this installation,
please read through this entire instruction booklet
The Vortech Maxflow Power Cooler system was designed as a street/strip oriented aftercooler,
specifically for use on 1993 - 1997 LT1 GM F-Body vehicles equipped with a Vortech Supercharger
producing up to approximately 580 HP. The Maxflow Power Cooler system will fit and work equally
well with other brands of centrifugal superchargers as well as turbochargers, with minor modifications.
As with any power enhancing product, this system is intended for use on healthy, well-maintained
engines. Vortech Engineering is not responsible for engine damage. Installation on new vehicles
will not harm or adversely affect the break-in period so long as factory break-in procedures are
followed.
For best performance and continued durability, please take a note of the following key points:
1. Use only premium grade fuel 92 octane or higher (R+M/2).
2. Always listen for any sign of detonation (pinging) and discontinue hard use (no boost) until
problem is resolved.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The standard water tank/filler system is not designed for use with ice. If an
ice bath type of system is desired (drag racing) Vortech can supply a tank (#8N105-010) specifically
designed for this type of use that mounts in the factory battery location (the battery must be
relocated to the trunk). Part #8N105-010 is a larger capacity tank with a generous opening that
allows for ice fill-up. A drain petcock is located on the side of the tank for removal of melted ice
in between rounds during racing applications.

3. Water Cooler Mounting
To properly mount the cooler in the limited space
available, it is necessary to cut two 1-1/2” holes
into the inside of the lower front bumper fascia.
This will accomplish a clean secure hose route with
a minimum of bends and restrictions.
A. Remove the three plastic (push-in) fascia
retainers that are used to attach the rear of the
lower front bumper fascia to the vehicle.
B. Loosely attach the supplied water cooler
brackets to the cooler using the supplied 1/4”
hardware. Following the photos, center the
cooler on the front of the vehicle. Using the
mounted cooler brackets as a guide, mark the
position on the lower radiator core support
where the bracket mounting holes must be
drilled (see photo - 3). Drill the four mounting
holes and loosely attach the cooler assembly
to the core support. With the cooler in place,
mark the back of the front lower bumper cover
location where the 1-1/2” holes are to be bored.
Photo - 3
C. Remove the cooler from the vehicle and bore
the two 1-1/2” holes where previously marked
in the front fascia.
Photo - 4
D. Using pipe sealant, thread both of the 3/4”
x 1/2” NPT x 90° fittings into the water cooler.
Both fittings should be clocked to point toward
the side, parallel to the cooler face.
1-1/2” holes
in front fascia
E. Install the fittings (that are attached to the
cooler) through the 1-1/2" holes previously
bored into the fascia. Make sure that the cooler
is configured so that the 90° fittings are on the
top and pointed toward the driver side of the
vehicle. Following the Hose/Component
Schematic, cut and attach the two lengths (90"
& 34") of 3/4" hose to the fittings on the water
cooler. Install one nylon clamp on each of the
hoses where it slides onto the cooler fitting by
pulling down the fascia and reaching in behind
it. Attach the bottom portion of the cooler to
the radiator core support using the previously

4. Water Tank Mounting
A. Install all of the fittings, hoses and tank tabs
onto the tank exactly as shown in photo - 5.
Orient the hoses to match the hoses in the
photo and use the supplied #20 and #10 hose
clamps to secure the hoses to the tank. Insert
one of the supplied 3/4” hose barb unions into
the open end of the 3/4” x 90° hose. Make
sure that both hoses each have their shorter
“leg” attached to the tank fittings (the longer
end of each hose should be pointing up and
away from the tank). Attach the tabs to the
tank using the supplied1/4-20 x 1/2” bolts and
washers, do not overtighten.
Photo - 5
B. From underneath the vehicle, locate the tank
into the upper corner of the driver’s side lower
wheel housing (see photo - 6). Start by routing
the two tank hoses through the opening
connecting the lower wheel housing to the
main engine compartment (rotating the
tank/hose assembly while installing makes
hose routing easier). With the tank being held
in position, mark and drill two mounting holes.
One will be made in the plastic inner fenderwell
and use the supplied nut, bolt and washers.
The second will be into the metal above the
tank using the supplied #12 sheetmetal screw
and washer.
Photo - 6
C. Attach the 3/4" hose running from the driver
side water cooler fitting to the outlet on the
water pump and secure with nylon clamps.
Trim hose length if necessary to maintain a
smooth hose routing.

4. Water Tank Mounting
(continued)
E. The open (top) end of the 1-1/4” filler hose
will need to be trimmed 2-1/2” shorter so that
when the hose adapter and cap are installed,
the cap is near level with the top of the radiator
core support. Insert the supplied aluminum
hose adapter into the open end of the long 11/4” tank filler hose (this hose should have
been previously routed up into the engine compartment) and secure with the supplied #20
clamp. If necessary, slightly rotate the filler
hose assembly so that the aluminum hose
adapter is up against the rear of the upper core
support (see photo - 7). Secure the assembly
to the radiator core support using the supplied
adel clamp and sheetmetal screw.

6. Aftercooler Core
A. Wrap the aftercooler core with the supplied
heat blanket. Install the two supplied 1/2” NPT
x 3/4” straight barb fittings into the aftercooler
core using a small amount of pipe sealant onto
the threads.
B. Attach the supplied 90° long rubber elbows to
the water fittings (the short leg of each elbow
must be trimmed 1-1/4" and be installed with
the short leg on the core side) on the core.
Slide a hose union into the open ends of each
elbow (see photo - 9). Connect the previously
cut 48" and 90" sections of hose to the proper
hose unions (refer to the Hose/Component
Schematic). Secure all hose connections with
the supplied nylon clamps.
Photo - 9
C. Remove the two center driver’s side valve cover
bolts temporarily. Place the supplied aftercooler
core support onto the center of the valve cover
and secure with the factory valve cover bolts
(see photo - 10).
D. Place the aftercooler core (snaps down) onto
the aftercooler core support, in-between the
power brake booster and the intake manifold
(see photo - 11), while at the same time routing
the water lines around the rear of the power
brake booster toward the driver side corner of
the engine compartment. It may be necessary
to lightly bend the brake line cluster on the
shock tower for core clearance. Also, the
factory fuel lines must be routed down along
the side of the valve cover. Make sure that the
routing of the water lines allows for a smooth,
non-kinked path.
Photo - 10
E. Route the water hose coming from the driver
side fitting on the core, to the previously
mounted 3/4” x 90° rubber hose on top of the
water tank (there should already be a brass
hose union attached here). Connect the hose
to the tank at this point. Trim hose length if
necessary. Do not yet secure with the supplied
plastic clamp; the hose must be removed in

E. Using the supplied 2-3/4” sleeves and #44
hose clamps, connect the 2-3/4” tube to the
discharge of the supercharger and the
aftercooler core inlet. Leave the clamps loose
temporarily.
F. Remove 1” from the round end of the original
Vortech aluminum throttle body elbow and reinstall onto the throttle body using the original
clamps and sleeves. See Aluminum Discharge
Tube Modification diagram.
G. Install the remaining supplied heat sleeve/blanket
onto the supplied 3” discharge tube. Using the
supplied reducers and hose clamps, secure the
tube to the aftercooler and the modified throttle
body inlet elbow. Attach the existing supercharger bypass valve and supplied 1” x 4” hose
to the bung on the 3” tube and secure with the
existing #16 clamps.

7. Discharge Tubing/Manifold AIR Injection Modification
(continued)
H. Align all tubes and aftercooler core and tighten
all clamps. Close the snaps located on the
front of the heat sleeve/blanket.
I. Using a small amount of pipe thread sealant,
thread the female end of the factory diverter
valve onto the supplied 90° compression fitting.
J. Slide the factory air pump check valve (if
equipped) into the 3/4” end of the 180° elbow
previously installed onto the factory air pump.
If the vehicle is not equipped with a check valve
(earlier models), insert the supplied 3/4” hose
barb union into the hose. From the check valve
(or barb union), use the supplied 3/4” x 6”
length of hose to join the diverter valve and air
pump together.
K. Reattach the brake booster vacuum hose to
the booster by routing it up over the top of the
aftercooler core. Trim hose length if necessary.

8. Final Check
A. Reconnect the battery cable.
B. Temporarily remove the aftercooler return hose
from the 3/4” union running to the water tank
(see step 6E).
C. Fill the Vortech water tank with a 25%/75%
coolant/water mix until water starts to run out
of the rubber return elbow located on the water
tank. Temporarily insert the open end of the
return hose (running from the aftercooler core)
into the tank filler neck.
Final Check
D. Turn the ignition key to the “on” position to
prime the water pump. Water should be flowing
through the system. If water is not flowing,
air must be purged from the lines by applying
suction to the end of the return hose inserted
in the filler neck. The pump should not be
allowed to run for extended periods (30 seconds
or more) without waterflow. Once water is
flowing, allow to run for approximately one
minute. Turn off the ignition and wait for one
more minute. Restart the pump and make sure
that the water is still flowing properly.
Reconnect the core return hose to the 3/4”
barb union on the tank and secure with a clamp.
E. Check all fittings, lines and hoses for routing
and leaks (away from hot objects and sharp
edges).
F. Reinstall the mass air meter, air filter assembly,
lower splashguard and radiator deflector.
G. With the pump running and flowing water
through the system, fill the water tank up. (Do
not overfill the tank. Stop filling when the water
has come up to the base of the filler hose.)
Attach the filler cap to the aluminum filler hose
adapter. Drill a 1/4” hole (if not already done
by Vortech) in the center of the fill cap to
provide the system with a vent to allow for
thermal expansion of the water and air.
