Keeping the lights bright

A special time for ‘train people’

No matter how old a man
becomes, there is always a boy
inside. And what better way to
bring out those boyish ways
at Christmas time than with a
model train set.
Many a white-haired soul
can vividly recall those longago sleepless Christmas Eve
nights when the night air was
chilling, Jack Frost covered
the ground, and just a touch of
snow filled the air. The ground
was just white enough to call it
a white Christmas.
It would be the one Christmas to remember as children
crept down the hall, peeked
into their parents’ room with
hopes of seeing a positive
signal to sneak into the living
room and discover a world of
toys, fun and joy under the
Christmas tree.
The year was 1922 or 1945
or 1958 or 1972. The “Christmas of the train set” is the one
easily recalled for the rest of
one’s life.
For some it was a landmark
year. The same kind of year as
when a person graduates from
high school, or the year one
gets married. They are “never
forget” years.
For those who model trains
have provided a “never forget
year,” the conversation sort of
goes like this: “I remember
that Christmas. It was 1957.
I got my first Lionel train set.
Lord what I’d give to have that
train set back!”
For the members of the
Rappahannock River Railroaders Club that long-ago Christmas feeling has become a
year-around feeling. These 27
model train enthusiasts meet
regularly at their clubhouse on
Ballpark Road in Deltaville.
Lee Paul of Deltaville is the
owner of Deltaville Depot, a
store that deals exclusively in
model trains, and also is treasurer of the club. “We have
27 members, some from the
Northern Neck and most from
Middlesex and Gloucester,” he
said.
Most members are retired,
but there is a 16-year-old from
Mathews who is very active,
noted Paul. The members have
train sets in HO-gauge, Ogauge and G-gauge layouts.
An O-gauge layout is a Lionel
train considered authentic, but
not always to scale. HO trains
are to scale and G-gauge are
over-sized scales of trains.
Some club members actually worked for railroad companies. Donald and Lynn
Burnett of Wake both retired
from Norfolk and Western
Railroad and have a G-gauge
train layout that rambles
through their garden outside
their home with 600-feet of
track, said Paul.
For most, it’s just the love
of trains and sometimes the
history that surrounds them.

The
Northern Neck Land Conservancy
helps preserve open space for
farms, forests, and habitat
and water quality in Lancaster,
Northumberland,
Richmond,
Westmoreland and King George
counties. It has helped preserve
more than 4,500 acres and
35,000 feet of shoreline on the
Chesapeake Bay, Rappahannock
and Potomac Rivers by assisting
landowners to place a conservation easement on their properties.

trains after reading a book
on the history of the Muncie
Valley Lifeline, a small railroad
that was around 100 years ago
in central Pennsylvania. The
railroad connects the Lehigh
Valley Railroad with Northern
Sullivan County to the Reading Railroad near Muncie. “A
lot of the guys really get into
the history and try to duplicate
a lot of the terrain of a specific
area,” said Paul.
Club members are building
an O-gauge layout with three
tracks at its clubhouse. “We
have not finished our project.
We still have all the scenery
to do,” said Paul. “The tracks
are in and all the switches and
controls are wired up to run
three O-gauge trains.
“Most of my members are
year-around train people or
hobbyists, but Christmas
time is a special time for train
people,” said Paul.
“This is a good hobby for
young kids because it teaches
them electricity, woodworking,
and the art of making scenery,”
he said. “The kids who get into
it, really get into it.
“But for young and old, it’s
about fun and, for some of us,
remembering our youth,” said
Paul.
“The best thing about Christmas is the lights, and the worst
thing about Christmas is the
lights.”
Those words came from a
woman who normally loves
Christmas, as she searched for
the broom and dust pan. The
crack in the glimmer of Christmas came after she broke bulbs
she was trying to fix.
Just about everyone is
familiar with those strings of
lights—where one bulb goes
out and the whole string dies.
You put them away so carefully, and somehow they break
on their own.
The manufacturer always
includes microscopic fuses
(what a joke) and spare bulbs.
An hour of pulling and replacing each bulb until you find the
bad ones is enough to make a
saint cuss.
How do those people with
huge light decoration displays
manage to do it?
LightKeeper Pro to the
rescue. No more guess work,
said Lynda and Troy Preston
of Topping, who are renowned
for their big display at Gone
to the Dogs Pet Boarding and
Grooming.
Lynda saw the plastic “gun”
on QVC and Troy, who is an
electrician, agreed to give it a
try.
This “bulb tester and repair
tool” is amazing, said Troy.
Simply plug in the dead light
string, run the gun by each
bulb, the buzzing stops when it
reaches a bad bulb. Remove it
and plug the LightKeeper Pro
into the bulb socket and click
the trigger twice. Put in a new
bulb and presto—let there be
light! “It recharges the string
somehow,” said Troy.
Hurd’s Hardware in Deltaville
and Harrow’s Home Center at
Cooks Corner sell the LightKeeper Pro.
Lowe’s sold out of them 10
days before Christmas and will
not get any more until next
season. Wal-Mart and Home
Depot never heard of it.

that is the talk of Topping
Eight years of adding a few
extra Christmas decorations
each season has lit up Gone
to the Dogs Pet Boarding and
Grooming on Kate’s Neck
Road (off of Route 3, a half
mile from Route 33).
Lynda decorates for all the
holidays, but none of them
are like Christmas. Last year
she spent $2,500 on Christmas
decorations, including blow-up
penguins.
This year she added “lit
packages” that she cajoled
from Wal-Mart (they were the
last ones on the shelves). “They
have been hot this year,” she
said. “You can’t find them anywhere. You have to buy early.”
She’s amassed so many decorations that she has a a storage
unit to hold them all.
The Prestons start decorating
for Christmas in October and
throw the switch on Thanksgiving.
Husband Troy helps, and
even though he doesn’t share
Lynda’s exuberant enthusiasm,
he’s happy with the final result.
“There’s been a few years
where I scaled back and people
would pull in and ask why I
wasn’t decorating,” said Lynda.
“People enjoy it and I enjoy it.
It’s part of what Christmas is
about.”
