On March 2nd in 83, a group of
dedicated individuals were shaping
the history of our new State and the
subsequent future of the beautiful Hill
Country area we call home. Just think,
if they had not won our independence from Mexico, we could
be living south of “the border” right now. How different life
would be...
Because our past experiences frame our present thoughts –
and routine judgement calls – recent history and distant history
shape us as individuals and as communities. And so our March
issue is dedicated to history – and all that power we let the past
have over us. How different life could be...
Someone once said that history can’t be separated from the
personality who wrote it – so I guess that must also apply to
who saw it, who said it, and also who listened to it before the
account was passed on. Just as ‘beauty is in the eyes of the
beholder,’ much of history is too. We can recall it with beauty
or remember it with struggles and pain.
Alton Rahe, who was born in Sattler in 32 but moved
to New Braunfels at sixteen, took on researching written and
oral records for
construction brought change. Some he
remembers himself. How different life was back then...
Viola Meckel was chosen as our Canyon Lake Community
Profile for this historical month; she was born in Sattler like her
parents, grandparents, and great grandparents were. At , she
remembers a few scattered farm houses spread far apart and the
dances and gatherings that drew them so close.
The time I spent with Mrs. Meckel was too short, with more
memories I still want to hear. So I hope this is just the beginning
of a story that’s meant “to be continued...”
“Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the
end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”

More than one pair
by Dr. Justin Kim
After age 40, the single pair of glasses you previously wore generally will
no longer give you clear vision at all
distances — or at least not without some
compromises.
These vision problems are caused by
presbyopia, which affects all of us beginning in middle age and reduces our ability to see at all distances.
Therefore you may need to consider a combination of options to
fully address problems caused by presbyopia.
Multiple eyeglasses with single vision lenses. Many people
over age 40 deal with presbyopia by purchasing two or more pairs
of eyeglasses with single vision lenses. One pair can be prescribed
for distance vision (driving, watching television, etc), and a second pair with single vision lenses can be prescribed for computer
work, reading and other near-vision tasks.
This option offers several visual advantages:
Single vision lenses prescribed specifically for distance vision
or near vision work better if you need to look upward or downward. If you’ve ever tried to sit back on your recliner or watch
TV in bed while wearing eyeglasses with progressive lenses, you
know that the near part of the lens interferes with your ability to
see clearly across the room when your head is tilted back.
Similarly, single vision lenses prescribed for near work are
great for performing car repairs or other tasks where you need to
see close-up objects above your head. So there’s no need to crane
your neck back or prop your glasses up to get into that near zone as
you would with a bifocal, trifocal or progressive lens.
Single vision lenses offer advantages for computer work or
reading. Your eye doctor can customize the prescription for the exact working distance you prefer, and you get an unrestricted field
of view at that distance. This is particularly important for sustained
computer work, where standard bifocals and multifocal lenses (trifocal or progressive) can cause posture problems that contribute to
computer vision syndrome.
Even if you like wearing progressives, bifocals or trifocals most
of the day, it’s always nice to have a second pair of glasses with
single vision lenses prescribed specifically for computer work or
reading. Your eyes and neck will thank you!

“Apps” for your home

www.skylarkclean.com
Those of you who are familiar with the
term “app” most likely identify that with
the iPhone. For those of you who may not
be familiar, an App is a computer program
that does a specific job. Most companies
will have an App for their products going
forward to jump on the band wagon for
this huge buzz word. You will most likely
be seeing many commercials taunting the
word Apps.
Now, how will the word App be tied to you and your home, and
what do you need to do about that today? First of all, most of your
home products will have some kind of connection to the internet
on it. You’ll need to bridge the gap between your many devices and
your home network or router.
Many devices will have a wireless connection built in, but you
should strongly consider hard wiring the connection back to your
router for optimum performance due to distance and building limitations. I only recommend using wireless as a last resort. Wireless
devices often use the same frequency and this will keep your wireless options open for future use.
Now you will be able to see and use these Apps through your
TV screen, handheld remote or a smart phone. Lighting, cameras,
temperature and energy usage can all be managed through your TV
and/or smart phone. Imagine being able to view energy usage in
real time and see exactly how much your appliances and devices
are costing you as they are being used in a dollar amount, now you
can start cutting that energy bill down to size.
There is a new industry dedicated to writing and developing Apps
and this will be hard to ignore. You’ll just need the infrastructure
in place to make it work. You can start small but this should be a
part of your decision making process each time you purchase or
upgrade a new product in your home, anything from light switches
to water softeners, A/C units to Blue Ray players.
Now if they could just make an App to walk my dog at 10:30 at
night! Thank you for shopping locally.

One needs only to turn on the TV or
open the newspaper to know that real estate
foreclosures are at an all time high in our
country. It is important that homebuyers
concerned with making monthly payments
on their mortgages educate themselves on
the foreclosure process.
A proper foreclosure generally involves a real estate lien note
executed by the borrower at closing for the balance of the purchase
price, the deed of trust signed by the buyer and the statutory law
and procedure that must be complied with. When the property is the
debtor’s residence, lender must give proper notice under the Texas
property code guidelines. Depending on the timing of the various
required notices, it usually takes approximately 0 days to execute
an uncontested foreclosure. This process may be delayed if the borrower contests the action in court, seeks delays and adjournments
of sales, or files for bankruptcy.
Debtor’s faced with the possibility of foreclosure can attempt to
convey the property back to the lender which could save possible
time and litigation costs for both parties. The borrower can also
resell the property and the new buyer may or may not be liable for
a deficiency judgment and may have to assume the existing note
if he or she does not get independent financing. Refinancing may
also be another option for persons who simply need to lower their
monthly payments.
If the property enters into a foreclosure sale that is sold at an
exceedingly low price, debtor may be able to challenge the sale. This
may be the case if the price does not exceed 70% of the properties
fair market value.
One should also be aware that foreclosures may be prohibited if
the property owner is deceased and is a part of estate administration, if the property is in receivership as a result of bankruptcy or
divorce proceedings, or if the debtor is in the armed services or is
under 8 years of age.
The information provided here is only for discussion purposes
and not meant to constitute legal advice of any kind. This is intended
brief overview of the foreclosure process and the homeowner’s
rights under Texas. If you face the prospect of foreclosure you
are encouraged to seek legal advice to determine your rights and
responsibilities.

or
March is a very active gardening
month here in Central Texas. There are
thousands of very valid questions that
folks ask every year. Here are some
examples hardware folks get asked
all year round.
What do the three numbers on the
bags and boxes of fertilizer mean?
They represent the percentages of plant nutrients by weight.
Just remember “up, down and all around.” The first number
represents the nitrogen, the second represents the phosphorus
and the last one represents the potassium. These numbers are
always expressed in the same order.
When should I apply fertilizers to plants and trees?
Don’t apply liquid fertilizer at the same time you plant.
Some root hairs will break, and the fertilizer will burn them.
Wait two to three weeks after planting before you fertilize.
In general, apply fertilizers to plants at the beginning of the
growing season. For deciduous trees, fertilize when leaves
appear; and for evergreens, when it turns cold. Shrubs do not
require much fertilizing.
Can I spray my fruit trees from the ground?
Yes, a hose-end tree sprayer will do the job, but will often
end up applying the chemical to other surrounding plants
and the lawn. Consider using a ladder and a regular hose-end
sprayer or pump sprayer.
How do I plant grass seed?
Start with top-quality grass seed. Work the soil up a little
with a rake. Evenly sowing larger areas by hand is difficult,
so use a spreader. Cover the seeds by raking a little soil over
them. Fertilize and mulch only if it’s on a hillside. Use very
little mulch. Then be sure to water, water, water.
When is the best time to plant grass?
In late winter or early spring as soon as the weather permits.
Another good time is around Labor Day.
When is the best time of day to water?
Some people mistakenly believe that daytime watering
can burn their grass, but, in general, the best time to water is
actually from 0am to 2pm. If that is not possible, then try
morning or early evening.

History of pest control
I HEARD H&R BLOCK
GUARANTEES EVERY TAX
RETURN. IS THAT TRUE?
by Terry Schroller
You’re standing there with a chance
of stardom as a contestant on Jeopardy
and the only category left is pest control
under History. You hit the button. Here’s
your answer – Sumerians of 2500 BC
used sulphur compounds for this purpose.
“What is the first recorded chemical pesticide usage?” is your
question response. Correct! Amazing, because all this time you
thought it was “Otto the Orkin Man” who came to your grandparent’s house and used something that made your eyes burn.
There’s more. The Chinese around 1200 BC, in their great age
of discovery, continued to develop more sophisticated products
and methods of pest control not only for crops but for their own
comfort. By 500 BC they were using mercury and arsenic compounds to control body lice. Whoa! Not good.
The Egyptians used fishing nets for mosquito control in 490
BC. Don’t forget about the Romans. From before 300 BC to 70
AD they used predatory insects, prompted the use of galbanum
resin added to sulphur for control of pests, and they built the first
rat-proof grain store.
Date growers from Arabia moved cultures of ants from neighboring mountains to their oasis plantation to prey on ants which
attacked their crops way back in 1000 AD.
Due to the commercial needs to ensure crops and livestock during the European Renaissance, pest control became more systemized and new pesticides were discovered.
The term pest control comes from knowledgeable people coming in to protect large farming operations and demand increased
after the disastrous potato famine in Ireland around 1840. These
people were called pest controllers and a new profession began.
Pest control, of course, is still going today with most companies being small family run operations. One thing is for certain,
from the Sumerians of way-back-BC to modern times, there have
always been and always will be pests.
The next time you sit down for a good meal in a pest free environment, thank the pest controllers of yesterday and today.

Are you disinheriting your spouse?
by Max El Tawil, CFP®, ChFC
It has become common practice
that most estate plans contain a “ByPass Trust”, a technique intended to
minimize (or eliminate) estate taxes.
This is where you state in your will
that, upon your death, your assets
are to be split between your spouse
and a trust for the benefit of your children. The will goes
on to specify that the amount going to the trust shall be the
maximum amount exempt from estate taxes. The trouble
now is that the amount exempt from taxes is unlimited. This
means that, if the law does not change, and you die in 2010,
all your assets go into the trust as prescribed in the will, and
the surviving spouse gets nothing, except the income from
the trust. This is an unintended consequence of the way most
wills are written.
As we know, Congress is working on doing away with
the current repeal of estate taxes, with the resulting new law
slated to be retroactive to the beginning of the year. However,
the plans being considered by Congress involve setting a
permanent exemption amount ranging from $3.5 million to
$5 million or more. This would have the same effect as the
current law, except for those with large estates.
What to do: The first thing you must consider doing is
L XLIV
meet with an estate planning attorney to review your current
will and discuss your options. One favorite strategy of mine
is using a “Disclaimer Trust”. This is basically a way to
deal with the uncertainties inherent in the current situation.
It keeps the by-pass trust strategy intact in order to minimize
taxes, in case the law does change and a cap is placed on
the exemption. But it gives the surviving spouse the option
of whether to fund the trust (if the law changes) or keep all
assets as her/his inheritance if the repeal remains in place.
I apologize for getting somewhat technical. But this is a
very important issue that must be addressed soon. The consequences of inaction can be rather unpleasant at the very
least. My philosophy has always been that there is much
more to estate planning than saving taxes.

What full coverage doesn’t cover
by Tish Perry
In our last column, we started talking
about the difference in liability only and full
coverage insurance, this time we are going
to continue on in that direction and we’ll get
more into depth about full coverage.
Full coverage insurance is not required
by law. The term full coverage is misleading, since it doesn’t really cover everything.
It’s not, however a stand alone coverage. To get full coverage you
need to add the following to the liability only policy: Comprehensive, Collision, Rental & Towing and Labor. You can bet that
comprehensive and collision coverage will be required by your
vehicle finance company.
Comprehensive coverage is sometimes referred to as otherthan-collision coverage, or OTC. Obviously, it covers damages to
your vehicle that happen due to something other than a collision.
Examples include fire, weather damage, and even accidents with
animals. Basically if it’s not a collision with another vehicle or
cargo, it’s considered to be a comprehensive accident.
Collision simply covers damage to your vehicle when your vehicle contacts, another vehicle or other object within or connected
to that vehicle (trailer, pipe protruding from back of truck, etc).
Both comprehensive and collision pay to fix your vehicle. In both
cases you must first pay a pre-determined deductible.
Rental reimbursement coverage is good to have when you need
a rental car because of some kind of accident. If the car breaks
down because of a mechanical failure or normal wear and tear, the
insurance policy won’t get you a rental car. The amount of rental
reimbursement coverage is set up as a limit per day plus a maximum
amount. For example, 30/00 rental reimbursement coverage would
provide you with $30 reimbursement per day, with a maximum of
$900 for the total time it takes to fix your vehicle.
Towing and labor covers the cost of having your car towed or
even having it worked on in the bar ditch. It does not matter if you
had an accident or not. This coverage, however, does not cover the
cost of parts, it just covers labor costs.
Remember we gotcha cover’d……

March, at last, and with it, the promise
of spring time and warmer weather. Winter
brought the blessing of rain, rain and more
rain that has our lake looking like the lake
we all know and love, and surely means
potential for a great summer in Canyon Lake. But before summer
starts and the tubers descend on Canyon Lake, we’ve got Spring
Break to think of. While the Guadalupe River is still typically too
frigid for most, some brave tubers will hit the river, and many others
will come for the camping, the fishing and the gorgeously green
scenery that will surround them here in the Hill Country.
In 200, the week of Spring Break was the single busiest week of
the entire year in the Chamber Visitor’s Center. People are in town
enjoying the early Spring. Whether they’re new visitors or Winter
Texans who haven’t made their exodus back to the north yet, you
can bet they’re visiting your Chamber Visitor’s Center to look for
things to do while they’re here – or to make plans to return while
on summer vacation.
So, while you’re cleaning up your property, preparing for tent
campers or cutting back trees that will surely grow like crazy with
all the moisture, restocking your store front or preparing new menu
items for summer, don’t forget to stock up your spot in the Visitor’s
Center with brochures and materials for the throng of spring visitors
making their way through our Visitor Center.
Along with Spring Break, there’s another big event that hits
Canyon Lake before the summer, and that’s the Canyon Lake BBQ
Cook-Off! Mark your calendars for April 24th, when we’ll hold
the 2th Annual Canyon Lake BBQ Cook-Off at Mountain Breeze
Camp on River Road. Planning is in full swing, and as always we’ll
need the help of our awesome Chamber members to volunteer at the
event, to provide sweets and treats for the food booth, and to donate
the ever awesome auction items for our Live Auction! Without the
support of members like you, we wouldn’t be 2 years running!

The FDA states that the Quality Systems
Regulation for food, drugs, biologics, and
medical devices are known as Good Manufacturing Practices. A GMP certification distinguishes top quality nutraceuticals (pharmaceutical grade nutritional supplements)
from ordinary dietary supplements.
Dietary supplements are considered
food and can’t be patented because they are naturally occurring
compounds. According to the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, “A firm is responsible for determining that the
dietary supplements it manufactures or distributes are safe and that
any representations or claims made about them are substantiated by
adequate evidence to show that they are not false or misleading.”
In other words, dietary supplements do not require approval by the
FDA before they are marketed.
The Current Good Manufacturing Practices helps ensure that
manufacturers produce properly labeled and unadulterated dietary
supplements. In June 2007, the FDA ruled that the CGMP includes
requirements for the design and construction of physical plants that
facilitate maintenance cleaning, proper manufacturing operations,
quality control procedures, testing final product or incoming and in
process materials, handling consumer complaints, and maintaining
records. Small companies manufacturing dietary supplements must
be compliant by June 200. Large discount houses selling dietary
supplements should already be compliant with CGMP but don’t
have any current ratings or certifications from the CGMP.
Are you really getting the levels of EPA and DHA in your fish
oil that are stated on the label when you buy them at the discount
warehouses? How do these discount companies ensure that their
fish oil is free of mercury and PCBs? The truth is that they aren’t
independently tested and aren’t manufactured in warehouses that are
CGMP rated for supplement production. They may be cheaper but
are they effective? Are you actually getting what the label states?
Wouldn’t you rather spend your money on nutraceuticals that you
know will be effective, are bio-available, and free of chemicals,
pollutants, and additives? Look for nutraceuticals manufactured
by CGMP rated companies and spend your money where it counts
– on your health.

A positive weight-loss approach
Once you have made up your mind to
lose weight, you should make that commitment and go into it with a positive attitude.
We all know that losing weight can be quite
a challenge. In fact, for some, it can be
downright tough. It takes time, practice and
support to change lifetime habits. But it’s a
process you must learn in order to succeed. You and you alone
are the one who has the power to lose unwanted pounds.
Think like a winner, and not a loser – remember that emotions
are like muscles and the ones you use most grow the strongest.
If you always look at the negative side of things, you’ll become
a downbeat, pessimistic person. Even slightly negative thoughts
have a greater impact on you and last longer than powerful positive thoughts.
Negative thinking doesn’t do you any good, it just holds you
back from accomplishing the things you want to do. When a
negative thought creeps into your mind, replace it reminding
yourself that you’re somebody, you have self-worth and you possess unique strengths and talents. Contemplate what lies ahead of
you. Losing weight is not just about diets. It’s about a whole new
you and the possibility of creating a new life for yourself.
The PAHC 30 Days Challenge is a human initiative promoting
the positive changes we can take in our daily lives to improve
our health. It is a challenge to our local community to take the
first step of change and take us up on our offer of a free 30-Day
Transformation program. It is open to anyone in our local region
by Pierre DesChesnes
who wants or needs help learning the small changes required to
see improvement in our energy, weight, vitality, and well-being. We don’t promise miracles with our challenge, but we do
promise a step in the right direction.
By helping people transform their health, we can guide them
towards more fulfilled lives with an improvement in work place
productivity, relationships, family life, and a sense of renewal
and with a more powerful mind-set. PAHC believes in order
for our mind, body and spirit to be healthy we must exercise all

Iodine deficiency is occurring at epidemic
levels. Over 00 years known as necessary
for thyroid hormone production, iodine is
also responsible for the production of all the
other hormones of the body. Adequate levels
are necessary for the proper immune system
function. Iodine contains potent antibacterial,
antiparasitic, antiviral, and anticancer properties. Iodine is also effective for treating fibrocystic breasts, ovarian cysts and elevates pH. Conditions treated with iodine: ADD/
ADHD, athersclerosis, breast disease, Dupuytren’s contracture,
excess mucous production, fatigue, hemorrhoids, headaches and
migraine headaches, hypertension, infections, keloids, liver disease, nephrotic syndrome, parotid duct stones, Peyronie’s, prostrate disorders, sebaceous cysts, vaginal infections.
Children need adequate amounts of iodine to form the normal architecture of the glandular tissue as well as for the optimal
function of the entire endocrine system. Their requirements have
increased due to the increased exposure to goitrogens such as bromide, fluoride, and chlorine derivatives. Iodine deficiency is one
of or the main cause of ADHD not due to a deficiency of a dangerous psychotropic medication.
Bromide a known carcinogen to the breast is found widely in
the commercial baking industry as a dough conditioner; in some
sodas, ie, Mountain Dew, AMP Energy Drink, Gatorade; in many
prescription items for bowel and bladder dysfunction and asthma
inhalers; in many fire retardant chemicals added to furniture, carpets, computers, clothing, bedding and other common materials;
in crops sprays; as an antibacterial agent for pools and hot tubs; for
termites; and for lawn care pesticides and insecticides.
Currently, our exposure to toxic halides, fluoride, bromide, and
perchlorate are occurring at levels that humans have never been
exposed to. The consequence of this is a worsening of the already
present iodine deficiency problem. Only through iodine supplementation and detoxification can you reverse this problem. Bromide is a toxic element and has no place in a human.
To be continued...watch for my column next month. Learn
about a simple test for your iodine level, a lending library, and
detoxification.

New options for a
healthier life
by Donna Aloia
Audio-Sensory Technique combines the
therapist’s knowledge, their arsenal of modalities, if you will, with the art of music
into a smooth choreographed massage.Your
Audio-Sensory Therapist acts as a conduit
between the music and your body. The therapist translates what
you’re hearing into what you’re feeling through carefully choreographed strokes tailored to your body’s own unique nuances.
Music is mathematical. Even if you’ve never heard a song before, through logical consequence, one can anticipate what note,
hence what stroke and the depth of the stroke that comes next.
Just like a music theorist identifies patterns that govern the song’s
structure, the Audio-Sensory Therapist identifies and matches the
knots on your body to the patterns in the song’s structure. This induces a rapid feeling of comfort and security earlier on in the massage. It is not about the rhythm of the music, but rather the depth
of the music – the melody.
First, the therapist identifies the client’s problem areas, and
through the course of the music, the therapist can match a crescendo with an area that needs to be warmed. Furthermore, when the
song has a heavier deep base, the therapist can guide their hands to
a particular area requiring deeper work.
We are each unique. With so many different massage modalities
out there, you can get one tailored to your individual needs.
MonaVie has introduced their newest MonaVie (M)mūn™, a
beneficial blend of 19 fruits and Wellmune® – clinically shown to
promote proper immune function. Formulated with antioxidant rich
MVao2™, a proprietary complex featuring the superfruits açai and
maqui, the delicious juice helps protect your body year round and
is your daily defense for heatlth. It supports your immune system
to help safeguard you against potentially harmful microorganisms.
It helps optimize proper immune function, promotes and maintains
a overall sense of good health and well being, and benefits young
and old alike. The 19 fruits specifically chosen for their ability to
nutritionally support your immune health and overall well being are
açai, maqui, grape, apple, acerola, aronia, black currant, elderberry,
cranberry, blood orange, sea buckthorn, pear, blueberry, cupuaçu,
strawberry, baobab, lingonberry, bilberry, and camu camu.

There are many methods to stay in
contact with others such as snail mail,
email, social network websites, and the
telephone – cell or landline. Each has
pros and cons associated with some cost
whether stamps and envelopes, internet
access, or phone charges.
On the internet, there are many applications available from
Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL, Facebook, Myspace, and
others. However, one of the simplest, neatest, and relatively
easy to use is an application named Skype. It is available from
Skype.com for both the Windows and OS X platforms. When
you and a friend are both utilizing Skype, the usage cost is zero
for Voice, Chat, or Video communications. There are other
pay-for-options available.
There are a couple important items to consider about how
you will be using Skype. Will you be using a webcam for both
video and voice? Or are you just interested in using voice only?
If using a laptop, you may have one built in which will work
okay. If using a desktop or laptop without a webcam, you’ll
have to add a webcam available from Logitech, Creative Labs,
Microsoft, or others.
If you’re interested in voice only, I suggest you use a separate
USB microphone (or headset) available from Logitech, Plantronics, Labtec, or others. Ensure the microphone – webcam
or separate – has directional and noise canceling capabilities.
Some webcams (built-in or separate) and microphones don’t
have noise canceling or directional capabilities and will pick
unwanted background sounds.
Whether you use a PC or a MAC, go to Skype.com, download and install the appropriate version for your computer. Then
follow the simple 1-2-3 instructions, configuring and selecting
the audio both in and out (speakers or headset and microphone),
along with video (webcam), if utilized. Once this is done, call
the Skype Test Call contact to ensure proper operation. If you
run into problems, check the Help and Online Tutorials.
Once operational, add your friends from various contact lists
you already have. You may be amazed how many others you
know are already on Skype. Enjoy!

Trends in our homes
of tomorrow heezy’ s

In recent years we have seen a change in
our home designs and the products used to
build them. Customers seem more interested
in the effects of their building project on the
environment, and are questioning the products used in the construction of their homes.
The push to renewable products and a product’s effect on a person’s
health has become a real issue in new home construction.
Changing lifestyles calls for changing living spaces. Tomorrow’s
homes have sliding doors, pocket doors, and other types of movable
partitions to allow flexibility in living arrangements. Dedicated
living and dining rooms are being replaced by large multi-purpose
family areas. In addition, many houses include private bonus rooms
that can be used for office space or can be adapted to a variety of
specialized needs.
Forget the spiral staircases, sunken living rooms and high cabinets. The homes of tomorrow will be easy to move around in, even
if you or members of your family have physical limitations. Housing
specialists often use the phrase “universal design” to describe these
homes because they are comfortable for people of all ages and abilities. Special features such as wide hallways blend seamlessly into
the design so that the home does not have the clinical appearance
of a hospital or nursing facility.
An increase in eco-friendly architecture is encouraging builders
and their custom home customers to incorporate outdoor spaces
with the overall home design. The yard and garden become a part
of the floor plan when sliding glass doors lead to patios and decks.
These outdoor “rooms” may even include kitchens with sophisticated sinks and grills.
New custom home builders realize the importance of large
closets and storage spaces. Newer homes feature enormous walkin closets, spacious dressing rooms, and plenty of easy-to -reach
built-in cabinets.
Garages are also getting bigger to accommodate the larger
cars and trucks in demand today. Additional storage located in the
garage can be used to stow away the vacuum, ladders, bikes and
seasonal decorations, leaving the inside of the home uncluttered
and organized.
Mike and Jan Jones, a husband and wife team who live in
Wimberley, have owned and operated AmeriTex Builders, Inc.
since 2001. Mike has 30 years of hands-on experience in various
phases of home construction and oversees every stage to ensure
excellence in craftsmanship. They now have a Canyon Lake office
in Sattler. For more information, call Mike toll free at 1-866-8476800 or visit www.AmeritexBuildersInc.com.

When building or remodeling a home,
there are an overwhelming number of details
to track. Few things are more frustrating than
finishing a major construction project only
to find out that one small omission early on
is going to cost you much more later. One
commonly neglected item is simple preparation for the installation of water treatment equipment. This pre-plumbing is referred
to as a “softener loop”.
The purpose for a loop is to separate the inside water from
that used outside for irrigation, so that only the water entering the
house is treated. The loop consists of several components which
will accommodate the necessary equipment for your water problems. In most cases, a loop will be located in a garage, closet, or
mechanical room. There should be a water line exiting the wall
then turning 80 degrees before re-entering the wall. This will
provide the inlet and outlet lines for the softener or filter. There
should also be a drain which will handle the water discharged
during a regeneration cycle. This line should be connected to
the drain plumbing if possible, or routed to a separate location
if not. If there is a concern about this water entering the septic
tank, a french drain, or gravel pit, should be considered. If your
water treatment equipment is to be installed in a well enclosure,
the house should be fed by two lines. One for treated water and
the other for untreated.
A 0v electrical outlet should be placed near the loop in order
to power the water treatment equipment. A standard GFCI outlet
will suffice, but a four-way outlet will ensure that you have additional plug space for heat lamps, or for additional equipment. It
is also a good idea to have this outlet on a dedicated circuit.
Even if you do not intend to purchase a water softening system
immediately, it will save you a great deal of money and frustration
when you do decide to treat your incoming water. A licensed water
treatment specialist can work with your builder to make certain
that all of these components come together smoothly.

Okay, so you’re seeing all the TV
and newspaper adds trying to sell you
fertilizers right now. Don’t let them fool
you, now is not the time. The only things actively growing in
your yard are the weeds and I really don’t think you want to
feed them do you? Wait until about the middle of April or first
of May.
That being said you should have already treated your yard
with a pre-emergent, but there is still time if you hurry. The preemergent will help prevent the weed seeds that are in the ground
now from germinating and becoming big weeds this summer.
If you have any Mistletoe in your trees, get it out now while
you can still see it very easily. Mistletoe is a virus and if left
alone in a tree it will eventually kill the tree. Ball moss on the
other hand is not harmful to the tree, just unsightly.
If you want a healthy yard this summer, then give it what it
needs for a fighting chance. What’s that you ask? Nutrients – for
growth that will strengthen the root system, which in turn will
make your yard more drought tolerant.
The best way to give your yard the nutrients it needs is to
apply a ½” layer of compost across the yard, rake it into the
grass then, water it in so the nutrients get to the soil where they
are needed.
Recently, on a drive around the lake, I saw some awefully
ugly assassination attempts on Crepe Myrtles. I sure hope you
didn’t top your crepe myrtles. First of all, it is just ugly, secondly
it weakens the tree because the new growth is usually spindly
and weak. Crepes don’t really need to be trimmed for any reason
unless they’re growing too close to the house or another permanent structure. Light pruning is fine, but don’t massacre them
like you see so many people do. Some do it that way because it
is the easiest way, not the correct way.
Please call if you have any questions or if you need a reliable
service provider to take care of your yard this year.

Pudgy pets: Part 2
10th Annual CROPWalk on Saturday, March 13
by Julie Liu, DVM
Last month we discussed common
barriers to successful weight management. This month, we will cover tips for
weight management at home.
) Measure food with a measuring
cup. This provides a much more accurate
assessment of your pet’s current caloric
intake than using a coffee can or mug.
2) Complete a food diary. For one week, write down everything
that is fed to your pet, including table scraps and treats. This is
especially useful if there are multiple people in the household
feeding your pet. At the end of the week, you may find that the
majority of your pet’s diet consists of treats, placing them at risk
of malnutrition and obesity.
3) Use kibble as treats. Once your vet has provided you with
the correct amount of food to be given daily, measure out that
amount for the day and set aside a portion for treats. The “treats”
can even be placed into a cookie jar so they attain special significance to your pet. Many pets enjoy the attention they receive
when being given a treat almost as much as they enjoy the treat
itself, and will not mind if they are receiving their regular kibble
instead.
4) Give smaller treats. Trade a large biscuit for a small one,
or try cutting up a jerky strip into small pieces. This allows for
multiple treat opportunities using fewer calories.
5) Use a puzzle toy. Toys such as a Buster Cube can be filled
with your pet’s daily kibble portion and left for your pet to
work out, which prolongs the feeding time and provides mental
stimulation.
) Weigh your pet weekly using the same scale. Pets should
lose no more than -2% of their total body weight per week in
order to maintain lean muscle mass.
7) Make them work for their food. Try rolling a piece of kibble
across the floor, or putting cat food on a high perch to encourage
exercise.
For more about weight management, please talk to your vet.
Jeff Quinn, DVM, has been a veterinarian for 37 years with
