2009 annual report
Dear Friends,
2009 marked not just our first full year at 2 Columbus Circle, but an entire year of
extraordinary firsts for MAD. Among them: welcoming our 500,001st visitor to our new
home; our first performing arts series, The Mix; our first film series, French New Wave
Essentials, presented in collaboration with the Museum of the Moving Image; our first
wine bar, MADCrush; our first satellite location for The Store at MAD; our first Family Day,
celebrating our Upper West Side neighbors; and, of course, our first restaurant, Robert
at MAD.
Other firsts deserve a special mention, among them our inaugural graduating class of
ArtsLife interns—six young people who, thanks to Cathy Seligman and Bonnie Eletz, got an
on-the-ground education in running a New York City museum in the summer of 2009—and
our Open Studios, where daily, artists welcomed countless visitors who questioned, probed,
and came to understand viscerally the connection between materials, making, and process.
2009 was also the first time MAD had operated at 2 Columbus Circle with nearly twice the
annual expense budget that it had on West 53rd Street—in a faltering economy. We are
proud that, because of the efforts of our untiring Board of Trustees and staff, we succeeded
in finishing the year with a small operating surplus—and that we were able to stretch
our resources to accommodate public demand by enhancing programming and even,
remarkably, adding a sixth public opening day in 2009.

Most exciting to each of us at MAD is the chance to bring the ever-changing world of
contemporary arts and design to a new audience. Our online MADblog has been a particular

mystery for New Yorkers for so many years;” “the encouraged interaction with the museum
and its art is amazing,” and, “as a long time fan of the Museum of Contemporary Crafts,
then the American Craft Council, and now the Museum of Arts and Design, I wish you
great success! The building and its renovation are smashing.” Thank you to the hundreds
of bloggers who complimented us on the visitor experience at 2 Columbus Circle—and to
the hundreds of thousands of visitors who joined us, discovered us, or rediscovered us at
2 Columbus Circle in 2009.
As we move forward with our plans for 2010—including new and expanded programs to
accommodate your needs—we extend our thanks especially to Barbara Tober, Chairman
Emerita, and Nanette L. Laitman, former President of our Board of Trustees, for their
remarkable and spirited leadership over the past years. Their unwavering commitment to
MAD and to our mission is unmatched. We are grateful that we will continue to benefit
from their counsel for many years to come.
We hope to see you at MAD soon.

Internships
r ArtsLife
In 2009, MAD inaugurated paid
summer internships for 8 New York
City high school students, providing
real work experience in the arts. The
focus was especially on underserved
neighborhoods and at-risk youth;
applicants were required to apply
formally to the program, submit two
letters of support, and have active
parental involvement in the program
in order to participate.
Undergraduate- and GraduateLevel Internships
This talent incubator—designed for
undergraduate- and graduate-level
students seeking unpaid internships—
offered more than 60 young people
the chance to gain valuable work
experience in MAD’s education,
curatorial, development, public
relations, marketing, registration,
and executive departments; each
intern was mentored by a full-time
Museum staff member.

view of the craft of making features
artists working daily on MAD’s sixth
floor, completing projects in materials
such as ceramics, fiber, mixed media,
glass, and metals while talking
with visitors about their processes,
materials, and concepts. In 2009, 24
artists participated in the program;
many worked closely with MAD’s
artist/educators to enrich the MADlab
programs.
Studio Sundays
Intergenerational workshops led by
MAD’s professional artist/educators—
focused on materials, process, making,
and learning with your hands—were
offered in MAD’s classrooms on most
Sundays in 2009.
Wednesday Workshops
This new initiative, geared toward
seniors, is designed to teach new
techniques, explore a medium, and
allow participants to complete a
product with an artist drawn from
MAD’s pool of local talent. 2009’s
three pilot workshops—a polymer
clay jewelry session, a felted pouch
session, and a session on woven
bags—each sold out.
Professional Development
Workshops for Artists
MAD collaborated with the nationally
recognized organization Creative
Capital to provide a series of three
sold-out professional development
workshops—covering the areas of
strategic planning, fundraising, and
marketing—for 75 artists.
Cultural Collective
The Collective is a gathering point
for groups and organizations that
have goals similar to MAD’s, but lack
the space or resources for public
presentations and meetings. In 2009,
we presented more than 50 programs
throughout MAD—including in our
theater—with our 25 partners:

2009 donors to the collection
Dear Friends,
2009 was a stellar year for MAD, and for our mission to collect and conserve important
works in our field. Last year, I reported to you that in 2008, more than thirty generous
collectors had made a commitment to our field by making gifts of important works of art to
MAD. I am delighted that in 2009, 78 collectors, artists, and corporations made donations to

our collection—more than double those who had given in the previous year. I thank each
Massimo Iosa Ghini, Scudi, 2006
of those generous donors, whose names appear herein with their gifts.

Jason Miller, Seconds, 2008
Under the leadership of Simona Chazen, Chair of our Collections Committee—working
with David McFadden, Chief Curator, Lowery Stokes Sims, Charles Bronfman International
Curator, Ursula Ilse-Neuman, Curator of Jewelry, and Jennifer Scanlan, Associate Curator—
our collection is growing rapidly in importance as well as size. As you will see, the gifts given
in 2009 reflect not just the donors’ spirit of excitement over the new Museum of Arts and
Design, but a new consciousness of MAD’s mission and stature. Many were given by artists
chosen to participate in MAD’s exhibitions; others by manufacturers whose important work
in design is celebrated at 2 Columbus Circle. Still others were created by artists resident
in our Open Studios who wished to commemorate their time at MAD by enhancing our
collection. And, of course, many are the result of generous collectors who, through their
gifts, have offered their expertise to inform a new generation. Each gift to our collection—
no matter its provenance—is a public acknowledgment that MAD is the defining institution
in contemporary studio craft, art, and design.

2009 was a celebration of so many things…above all, the mesmerizing exhibitions and
programs that bring more and more people to 2 Columbus Circle each day to exclaim at the
creativity, imagination, innovation, accessibility, and artistic excellence that is the Museum
of Arts and Design. It also marked a very special anniversary for me—15 years as Chairman
of the Board of this remarkable institution. I was proud and deeply moved to have been
honored with MAD’s 2009 Visionaries! Award for Lifetime Achievement and to have been
in the company of my fellow honorees, the remarkable Shelly Lazarus and legendary Eva
Zeisel, during the evening’s very memorable gala ceremony.
When I stepped away from the Chairmanship of the Board of Trustees this year, I fondly
recalled how great an adventure the last fifteen years have been—and what a wild ride…the
most interesting and memorable of my life so far. We’ve been through some hard times—
but we’ve had our share of triumphs, too! And, along the way, we’ve managed to grow MAD
from a tiny niche museum to a destination location for hundreds of thousands of visitors
a year. Throughout my tenure as Chairman, I have been fortunate to have the counsel of
Chairman Emeritus and Chairman of the Capital Campaign, Jerry Chazen; former President,

chefs and A-list DJ’s—came together in support of MAD to create the first annual MAD
Contemporaries PAPERBALL. The evening mixed arts and design, dining, and dancing,
and introduced an entirely new audience to MAD. 47 diverse artists and fashion designers
created one of a kind paper art works that were installed at the event and sold as part of
the fundraiser.
In 2009, Mad’s event spaces were contracted out to more than 40 major clients. Highlights
included a two-day press launch for Elizabeth Arden’s latest anti-aging serum, with
spokesmodel Catherine Zeta-Jones; a weekend with the Discovery Channel; and two
Fashion Week shows for Bespoke and Kai Milla, featuring jewelry from The Store at MAD.

Bigger, Better, More: The Art of Viola Frey
February 3 – May 30, 2010
VIOLA FREY (1933–2004) was one of the most influential sculptors of the
twentieth century. She emerged in the complex and often contradictory
art world of the 1950’s, where painting, craft (specifically ceramics), and
design often merged and diverged in dynamic ways. After studying and
working in New Orleans and New York, Frey returned to her native
San Francisco in the 1960’s to devote herself to ceramics, eventually
joining the faculty of the California College of Arts. She remained
there on staff until she retired in 1999.
“Frey ‘unloaded images from
her brain and then the
flea market finds from the
shelves and tabletops of
her Oakland house.’”
“I found that jewelry had become
part of my personal diplomatic
arsenal.”
The 1960’s was a period of
experimentation and innovation on the West Coast.
Frey’s contemporaries Peter
Voulkos and Robert Arneson were taking
ceramics to new horizons by deconstructing form, interjecting sculptural values
as well as political and personal content.
Frey found her unique style and visual
vocabulary in her life-long fascination
with mass-produced ceramics figurines
which she collected in flea markets in
San Francisco and Oakland. She once
described these knick-knacks as “the
trifles that fill the cottages of thousands
of people, things briefly cherished and
then [thrown] OUT!” She combined
molded and actual versions of these
elements in what are known as her
“bricolage” sculptures.” Junkyard Planet
(1970) is an early example of these
madcap compositions. Through a
disregard for the usual laws of proportion and scale, and foregoing a
centralized, organizing element, Frey
was able to by-pass the sentimentality and kitschy quality of commercial
ceramic figurines and achieve “something that dealt with emotions.” Frey
used a similar technique in plate compositions such as Red Buddha (1994), where
in the words of Patterson Sims, an essayist
for the exhibition catalogue, Frey “unloaded
images from her brain and then the flea
market finds from the shelves and tabletops
of her Oakland house.”
But Frey is best known for her gigantic figures
of domineering men and over-wrought women
figures such as Group Series: Questioning
Woman I (1988), which is in the collection of
the Museum of Arts and Design and currently
on view in the Museum’s third-floor collections galleries. Not only does Frey reveal her
early involvement in painting in the dynamic
color glazes of the surfaces of these ceramic
sculptures, but she also proves to be a perceptive observer of gender and power issues
as they were played out specifically in midtwentieth century America.
The exhibition will include several monumental ceramic figures, bricolage sculptures,
paintings and works on paper included in the
original exhibition organized by the Racine
Art Museum, Wisconsin and the Gardiner
Museum, Toronto. At the Museum of Arts
and Design, additional works from MAD’s
permanent collection and several private
collections will be featured along with two
examples of Frey’s collaboration with
ceramicist Betty Woodman, documenting
their friendship and shared interests.
Bigger, Better, More: The Art of Viola Frey was
co-organized by the Gardiner Museum,
Toronto and the Racine Art Museum,
Wisconsin.
