“Airplanes of Alaska”
Cover: Lake Hood Seaplane Base (PALH), Anchorage, AK, is a photographer’s wonderland. It is part of a fascinating blend of floatplanes and other bush aircraft there and at Lake Hood Strip (Z41), with the globe-trotting passenger and cargo aircraft of Anchorage
International (ANC). The range of aircraft, so different from each other and in such close proximity, is astounding. And it is purposeful!
Purpose
An amazing assortment of over 1000 airplanes, J-3
Cubs to Boeing 747’s and everything between, dot
the lake, waterways and ramps of Anchorage.
Each one, large or small, piston or turbine, vintage
or modern, or on wheels, skis or floats, has a purpose
which defines it and gives it meaning.
Some are strictly for pleasure and others are
obviously workhorses. Some take hunters and
fishermen to nearby or distant lakes for their sport
but on another day they carry food and supplies to
those camps and lodges. And even lumber and other
building materials. They are often the only option.
Some airplanes have tanks inside or on the belly for
carrying fuel of all types to support life in the bush.
The ANC ramp accommodates 747’s and similar
aircraft from 50 carriers. They come and go 24/7 with
nearly 500 wide-body landings every week.
Nearby are countless 1940’s vintage Cessnas,
Pipers, Aeroncas, Taylorcrafts, Luscombes, Stinsons
and Interstates. Many are substantially “Alaskanized.”
Some show their age but others are beautiful and the
uninitiated might think they are much newer. I see a
few parked in the same place year after year, looking
more distraught with each visit.
Large piston transports like the DC-3, DC-4, DC-6
and DC-7, along with their cousins the Curtiss C-46
and Fairchild C-82’s and C-119’s, are a fading sight.
Almost gone are the obligatory puff of blue smoke
on start-up and their captivating rumble as they take
off and climb out. I find myself standing at attention
on the occasions when such a glorious event does
happen amid the whine of those who have usurped
their role.
The sole survivor of the round engine era is the
DeHavilland Beaver, most of which retain their worldclass P&W R985 piston engine. Fortunately most of
the Otters have been converted to turbine.
And then there’s the myriads of 1960’s and later
Cessnas and Pipers with a few Beech and others
mixed in, that do the yeoman’s work year in and year
out. That is their purpose.
Preferred Airparts is purposeful too. Obviously we
need to be profitable, but “way back” we determined
that, to the best of our ability we would operate with
integrity not only because it’s good for business
(who doesn’t want to deal with honest people?),
but because it supports our declaration that we are
Christians.
Further, we understand the longing of the human
heart for meaning and purpose in life and have found
such in viewing ourselves and the businesses in light
of God’s purpose.
His purpose is to communicate to all the world that
He loves us and that He has good plans for us – both
in our few years on earth and in eternity to come. He
loves us enough that He sent His Son Jesus to earth
to take upon Himself the punishment for the sins
of all who believe in Him. That is good news, and
helping spread that message to the ends of the earth
is the most rewarding and fulfilling thing a person
Colby, Austin, Brian and Mark Stoltzfus
could ever do. The sense of purpose it gives us is far
beyond any other reward of entrepreneurship.
We hope you enjoy the calendar, and look forward
to serving you in the new year.

Skies are widely used for winter flying off of lakes and snow covered land or runways, and are installed on
both taildraggers and tricycle gear aircraft. There are still a few vintage wood skies but most are aluminum
or fiberglass. Skiplanes look a bit out of place when sitting on the tarmac after the snow melts!

There are straight skies (above) and retractable wheel-skies. Many aircraft alternate between wheels,
floats and skies as needed, creating an industry that uses old Army vehicles as boom trucks to lift them
for the switchover. Many floatplanes wait out the winter on dry ground instead of going on skies.

This Super Cub is ready for action, gun-case and all! There are around 2000 small airplanes in the Anchorage area
alone, with rows and rows of every size, shape and form there and in Fairbanks and other cities. It's a photographer's
wonderland. That's a Cessna 175 on the far right (below) with Lycoming power, tailwheel and 185 style cabin windows.

APRIL
The average age of Alaskan aircraft is probably around 50 including many of 1940's vintage. This 1933 Stinson Jr. Sr is one of only a few
remaining from that decade and served as a bush plane for many years. Built with a 215-hp Lycoming, it now sports a 450-hp Pratt & Whitney.
I saw it at Homer on a dolly (below) on June 15, at Lake Hood, Anchorage (above) on June 17, and it was at Fairbanks (below) later that day.

Tourism is a huge industry in Alaska, as portrayed by these cruise ships and turbine Otters at Juneau. Five Otters would come
and go on flight-seeing glacier tours. They get out of the water in half the time of the original piston version and can stop in 300'.
N753AK (below) started life in 1953 as RCAF 3661.

The DeHavilland Beaver has been a mainstay of bush flying in Canada and Alaska for decades and has held off all challengers. They are
a real workhorse, and (as seen below) are used in many configurations. Most are former military and N4444Z was U.S. Army L-20A, U-6A
58-1985. Unlike its big brother the Otter, most Beavers have retained their piston engine, a sweet-sounding 450-hp P&W R985 radial!

If you're not a fisherman you are a minority in Alaska. Salmon, Halibut and other fish are not only staples in the Alaskan diet,
they are a major draw for sport fishermen and a primary source of revenue for many lodges, guides, and airplane and boat
operators, providing thousands of summer jobs for college students and others from the lower 48.

Fires are a huge threat to the vast Alaskan forests and create an industry for fire fighters. Tanker 52, Canadian
C-FKFA, is a 1953 Convair 340. It was N3425 for Braniff Airways and N73301 for others, and became a CV-580
turboprop in 1966. The Electra (below) is C-FYYJ, a 1961 Lockheed 188A, and was originally N9745C for Western.

Fuel haulers, from the 2000-gal. C-46 up to DC-6's and down to 250-gal. Beavers and even Cessnas, supply the lodges and
villages of Alaska with diesel, auto gas, kerosene and other fuels. This C-46 landed at Lake Clark while I was there. They usually
offload into large tanks but this time it was 55-gallon drums. "Salmon Ella" is former USAF C-46F Commando 44-78698.

Airplanes are often the only way to get people and cargo to the villages of Alaska. Building supplies, food and much else
that is needed for bush life and enterprise is flown in aircraft of every size. A few Douglas DC-6's and Curtiss C-46's are still
operating and plans are to get Fairchild C-119F, former USMC R4Q-2 131695 (below) and/or its sister ship in the air again.

Few airplanes in Alaska escape the scalpel. Countless Piper PA-22 Tri-Pacers have been converted into a PA-22-20
Pacer taildragger, with up to 200-hp. The Stinson 108 on the right now has a 210-hp Continental IO-360 in place of the
Franklin 150 or 165. Many have more power, longer wings, VG's, tailwheels, and/or beefed up landing gear, and more.
