Preferred Airparts - 2014
Preferred Airparts - 2014 “Airplanes of Alaska” Cover: Lake Hood Seaplane Base (PALH), Anchorage, AK, is a photographer’s wonderland. It is part of a fascinating blend of floatplanes and other bush aircraft there and at Lake Hood Strip (Z41), with the globe-trotting passenger and cargo aircraft of Anchorage International (ANC). The range of aircraft, so different from each other and in such close proximity, is astounding. And it is purposeful! Purpose An amazing assortment of over 1000 airplanes, J-3 Cubs to Boeing 747’s and everything between, dot the lake, waterways and ramps of Anchorage. Each one, large or small, piston or turbine, vintage or modern, or on wheels, skis or floats, has a purpose which defines it and gives it meaning. Some are strictly for pleasure and others are obviously workhorses. Some take hunters and fishermen to nearby or distant lakes for their sport but on another day they carry food and supplies to those camps and lodges. And even lumber and other building materials. They are often the only option. Some airplanes have tanks inside or on the belly for carrying fuel of all types to support life in the bush. The ANC ramp accommodates 747’s and similar aircraft from 50 carriers. They come and go 24/7 with nearly 500 wide-body landings every week. Nearby are countless 1940’s vintage Cessnas, Pipers, Aeroncas, Taylorcrafts, Luscombes, Stinsons and Interstates. Many are substantially “Alaskanized.” Some show their age but others are beautiful and the uninitiated might think they are much newer. I see a few parked in the same place year after year, looking more distraught with each visit. Large piston transports like the DC-3, DC-4, DC-6 and DC-7, along with their cousins the Curtiss C-46 and Fairchild C-82’s and C-119’s, are a fading sight. Almost gone are the obligatory puff of blue smoke on start-up and their captivating rumble as they take off and climb out. I find myself standing at attention on the occasions when such a glorious event does happen amid the whine of those who have usurped their role. The sole survivor of the round engine era is the DeHavilland Beaver, most of which retain their worldclass P&W R985 piston engine. Fortunately most of the Otters have been converted to turbine. And then there’s the myriads of 1960’s and later Cessnas and Pipers with a few Beech and others mixed in, that do the yeoman’s work year in and year out. That is their purpose. Preferred Airparts is purposeful too. Obviously we need to be profitable, but “way back” we determined that, to the best of our ability we would operate with integrity not only because it’s good for business (who doesn’t want to deal with honest people?), but because it supports our declaration that we are Christians. Further, we understand the longing of the human heart for meaning and purpose in life and have found such in viewing ourselves and the businesses in light of God’s purpose. His purpose is to communicate to all the world that He loves us and that He has good plans for us – both in our few years on earth and in eternity to come. He loves us enough that He sent His Son Jesus to earth to take upon Himself the punishment for the sins of all who believe in Him. That is good news, and helping spread that message to the ends of the earth is the most rewarding and fulfilling thing a person Colby, Austin, Brian and Mark Stoltzfus could ever do. The sense of purpose it gives us is far beyond any other reward of entrepreneurship. We hope you enjoy the calendar, and look forward to serving you in the new year. Countless Piper PA-22 Tri-Pacers have been converted into a PA-22-20 Pacer taildragger, with up to 200-hp. The Stinson 108 on the right now has a 210-hp Continental IO-360 in place of the Franklin 150 or 165. Many have more power, longer wings, VG's, tailwheels, and/or beefed up landing gear, and more.
